Re: [QUAD-L] Night Shivering
You have to be really careful, because a number of years ago my UTI went into the bloodstream and I went into a comma for 13 days and my kidneys were about to shut down as I do not have a bladder from bladder cancer. Don't ever wait, if you have symptoms, call the doctor or get to ER. I don't have a lot of symptoms with my UTI's, sometimes smell of the urine and a lot of extra spasms. I usually called my visiting nurse and get a culture. I often get night shivers and I am freezing.. Dana.

I really like my americaphone. You can get one for free through most state programs. I will have to look up the information, it is one of my notebooks which may not be findable. You can get them every so many years. The doctor has to fill out paperwork. I just can't room the name of the program right now. I think I will be able to find it. If you don't hear from me, remind me again. I use in my bed and on a boom so I could move it which ever way and turned so I always have access to my telephone. Always, Dana

Re: [QUAD-L] Home Again
Hi Lori,, I agree with you about hospitals being an unsafe place to stay, and normally I wold get the tests done on an outpatient basis, but in the case I was also getting a Colonoscopy done. There was no way I was going through the prep for that at home, so my Doctor checked me into the Cancer floor because I didn't have and infections to give them, and the didn't have any infections to give me! Dana... According to Nuance, NaturallySpeaking's parent company, the only Vista compliant version of NaturallySpeaking is Ver. 9. They are working on the 9.5 version for the professional edition and it should be available soon. Fever came down and chills subsided. I take heart meds so I always have to read all about each med. One other problem is that I have begun feeling an intense preasure from inside. Like incredible gas. The kicker is after my bowels move and I have released enough gas to propel a 747, its worse. I don't want to say anything untill I've finished the anti biotics because my greatest fear is going to the hospital and being forgotten to death. I can't imagine the fun involved in going to the doctor with all the snow and temps where salt creates ice. I can't get over this dread that I have about the hospital. They have come so close to killing me so many times. I know that its very likely they have a cure for my problem, however, I'm equally convinced that I will survive it by using what I have on hand and possibly hitting the right anti biotic by sending blood and urine samples to the lab. (major difference between hospital and home, faster lab results.) If you're sure your bowels are moving well and your bladder is emptying, then you probably have pain coming from somewhere. An infection would explain it, as well. It isn't always easy for us quads to tell when we are in pain while some quads hardly feel anything but pain. Re: [QUAD-L] UTI Prevention Van Insurence
Hi Dan, Have you ever tried using Methenamine (meth-EN-a-meen)? It belongs to the family of medicines called anti-infectives. It is used to help prevent and treat infections of the urinary tract. You might want to check into it. With Love, CtrlAltDel aka Dave C4/5 Complete - 30 Years Post Texas, USA Danny Hearn [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Yes John my doctors told me that also...that if you have an indwelling such as a supra-pubic catheter you usually have 2 or 3 types of infection always but they hate to treat unless you are having bad symptoms or problems, cause they don't want us getting immune to anti-biotics. Dan [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: If you have a supra-pubic cath or an in dwelling Foley of any kind for more than a few days, you have a UTI. It is a matter of how bad it is and how well you tolerate infections. On that level, you should have bacterial infections most of the time. If any of you get a viral infection, the doctor may want you in the hospital but there's not a lot they can do. (When were you ever made comfortable in a hospital.) You can be super clean and a real fanatic, but your skin is covered with bacteria it is trying to keep out. For this ! reason, most infections are stafflococous. If you have kids around then you get a higher rate of strep infections. (can't say they didn't give you anything.) If you think you can delay treating the infection, your kidneys can become history to an aggressive bug in under a day. Fortunately, us quads get pretty ill while the infection is still chewing on our bladder and start anti biotic in time. A UTI is worse if it is shutting your kidneys down. I can usually tell a lot by how easy it is to get mad. If I get po'ed because people don't park between the lines, I'm probably pretty sic! k. I personally don't go to hospitals. I can be ignored and miserable without going anywhere and I have cable tv for when I'm awake at 4 am. I just promise to call 911 if I think I'm going to die. They can always send a nurse with the plague du jour if need be. Next time you catch a bug remember, it caught you! Don't get me wrong, do all you can to stay clean. Lots of reasons to keep clean! Please don't think UTI's aren't serious because I like to joke. Once your kidneys go, you get a new catheter so you can get your blood dialysed and not die of septicemia as fast. john C-5 post 31 Cincy, OH

We learned a very valuable lesson on Superbowl Sunday. Water, in any forms seems to weaken a bears ability to navigate a wet grassy area. Hence, if you ever find yourself in the woods, being chased by a bear seek safety in a wet grassy area and pray that it rains. You will be safe as the bear fumbles itself on the way to its goal. RE: [QUAD-L] Sore
Hi Steve, That's what I'm thinking. About the only way to heal a wound in that are is to keep it clean, keep it dry, and keep off of it so it doesn't rub. A major pain in the butt! With Love, CtrlAltDel aka Dave C4/5 Complete - 30 Years Post Texas, USA Steve Oldaker [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: GA... Is there any way you can stay out of the chair long enough for the sore to heal completely? It would seem that spending even a couple of hours let alone 4-5 hours in the chair daily would undo any healing that is accomplished when you are not in your chair. I have had periodic skin trouble for nearly nineteen years of injury and I have never been able to heal a problem without staying out of the chair. I also keep a small fan blowing on my groin area any time I am in the bed, sore or otherwise, to prevent moisture from building up and creating problems. The problem is that it is under the scrotum where it meets the torso, so it is always warm and damp. The VNA has me on protein, vitamins, etc. We have used Progran, a thin covering that you put over the area, wet with saline and it is absorbed into the area. No change. I have now gone to a treatment that we used before, putting a heatlamp for 3 minutes along with neosporin and bagbalm in the AM, up in the chair 4-5 hours, then put a fan on it for 7 minutes, then neo. and bagbalm. No change. Any ideas? GA

[QUAD-L] severe chills
Hi Everybody, I am a C4-5 complete since July 31, 05. I know I don't have a UTI, nor am I sick in any other manner. What I would like to know, is if anybody else suffers from extreme chills radiating from the core of the body with no apparent cause or solution. The heat at 76+ degrees and multiple layers including hat and scarf do not help. I am currently staying at an extended care facility where they do not allow us to use heating pads, hot water bottles, or electric blankets. I try to drink as much hot tea and coffee as I can throughout the day in hopes to do some warming from the inside out, also to no avail. Any ideas or solutions would be most appreciated. [QUAD-L] Shivering
Thanks for the good responses regarding my night long shivering after I have been in bed a half hour or more. The hours of shivering are not cold related, but the ideas of an infection some place are interesting. As long as I stay sitting the shivers do not begin. As long as I continue to stay in bed supine and flat, the shivering will not start again unless I sit up for several hours. As directed by several list members I saw a doctor. Urine and blood tests were negative. I have taken to sleeping in my chair sitting, or to sleep in bed at 30 degrees or more to avoid the night long ordeal awake shivering uncontrollable for fours. So, still not to rule out an infection yet, but I am still requesting ideas or someone else who has done this. The members contributing on this list have more savvy, experience, and knowledge than most doctors I've worked with in my years as a c/5 quadriplegic.
