RE: [QUAD-L] seat cushion
As I've posted previously, I question the true value of pressure mapping. Doesn't the process and mapping assume you will always be seated (positioned) exactly the same way in your chair on your cushion each time? It seems even a minor variance (perhaps 1) left, right, forward or backward would effectively change the mapping. There may also be variances due to types of clothing worn and changes in weight. RE: [QUAD-L] seat cushion
Yes and no. It does change as your position changes, but you'd have to be pretty changed to make a real difference. But if you saw the pressure difference on my mapping of my Jay and my Roho, it was clearly more relief on my Roho. I was able to see how the pressure changes as I raised and lowered my leg-rests. I could tell where the best location was. Even if I'm slightly on one butt cheek more than the other or off to one side a bit. One day may fit better than another, but averaged out the better your cushion fits you the better for your butt. If I was 1 inch off, I'd be pretty uncomfortable. I think that would be bad on your butt with any cushion. Just my thoughts. Greg _ As I've posted previously, I question the true value of pressure mapping. TO ALL TC SCS MEMBERS, I remember it was last year or so when somebody out there told me about GoodSearch.com. I don't remember the story anymore but it seems to me that I checked with national on it and, whatever happened, it fell by the wayside. Well now I've just heard about it again from Stephanie at our North Carolina chapter. SCS is signed up on it and it is available to us as an excellent source of fundraising. Here's the deal. GoodSearch.com is a search engine that pays money back to your designated charity every time you use it. So every time you do an internet search for something, use GoodSearch instead of Google or Yahoo or whatever. For every search you do they'll pay a penny or so to SCS. That may not sound like much but it will add up, if we use it! THIS IS A NO-BRAINER FOLKS!!! If you're looking stuff up on the internet you're using a search engine so just use the one that will help us fund a cure. It's simple to do. Go to www.goodsearch.com. You'll see the search box and then you'll see the box to choose your charity. Type in Spinal Cord Society (open up your internet browser in another window and do this with me now), check to see it's the Fergus Falls SCS then click 'verify'. Now every time you go to GoodSearch, SCS will be preset and all you have to do is start your searches to make us some money. There is also an 'amount raised' button so you can see just how much money is being raised. This money gets sent right to Fergus Falls. You'll also see GoodShop.com right below that. Do your online shopping from there and it'll do the same thing to make even more money. AGAIN, THIS IS A NO-BRAINER! You can set GoodSearch as your home page, as a Favorite or download their toolbar or just their search box. All you have to do is just USE it. But don't stop there. Forward this to everyone on your address list who you think would be willing to help your cause out. We should be able to quickly get hundreds of people using this and it won't cost them a cent. Why wouldn't you, or they, want to do it? I don't care if you're searching for the best way to pick your nose, we should be using the heck out of this. It'll be easy enough to check with Fergus to make sure they're getting the money. If you don't want to do this, then all I can say is there is truly no hope for us. Mike

I never had pressure mapping until I developed a stage one pressure ulcer. I didn't realize it at the time that it was being caused by my jeans. I sat on a number of different cushions during the very simple procedure. It turns out that the best cushion for me is the 2 inch piece of foam. I have to agree with you Greg. If I'm off as much as a 1/4 of an inch I am extremely uncomfortable. A friend of mine is having the pressure mapping done as I speak. The only reason these haven't done is because he has been developing some raw spots on his rear end. He uses a 1 inch foam cushion. Hopefully they will find something that works well with him. Re: [QUAD-L] 35 year anniversary
Daniel, When you are doing the vest therapy try to have them put you in Trendelenburg if your bed is capable of doing that. This position in combination with percussion and expectorants can really facilitate the removal of secretions and thereby allow you to virtually eliminate pneumonia. Talk to someone about being put on a prophylactic breathing treatment if at all possible. This is also best done in Trendelenburg. Another thing you might want to try if you're having difficulties getting the secretions out. Have your caregiver put you in Trendelenburg and then turn you over on the side. If they can provide very hard percussion to the lower portion of your scapula (shoulder blade) this will definitely help get the secretions out of your system. You can also try quad coughing from the Trendelenburg position. At least all of these things work well with me. Quadius C2 3 quadriplegic 14 years post injury. Re: [QUAD-L] Help! Suprapubic Cath keeps plugging
This has happened to me several times over the last 14 years. The first few years that I had difficulty with this I believe it was largely because the catheter wasn't large enough. I ended up using a 22 French and this helped considerably. I did have a problem for about six months about four years ago. Nothing seemed to help. I took tons of all of the vitamins, drink as much juice is possible and drank (and continue to drink) about four to 5 L of water a day. My problem turned out to be bladder stones. Once they were removed, Presto, the problem was gone. I would recommend taking 500 mg of vitamin C three times a day. Taken some cranberry supplements if you're not able to drink cranberry juice. And irrigating a couple of times a week. If you're really having problems with your catheter clogging, you might want to try irrigating once a day. This is what I ended up having to do during my difficult period. You may also have to start having someone changed the catheter more frequently than you presently are. When this happened to me, I had to change my catheter once a week in order to prevent it from clogging. Keep in mind, that I had a significant amount of bladder stones though. I'm a little shocked at the 300. I take 80 mg of baclofen a day, but that is orally. The individuals I know who have a baclofen pump tell me it requires quite a bit less than when they were taking the medicine orally. Everyone reacts differently, but I never experienced fatigue from baclofen, then again I wasn't taking it in the quantities you are. The highest I ever went to was 160 mg a day. I still take quite a bit of medicine for spasms. Baclofen doesn't seem to be that effective for me, so I end up taking 75 mg of dantrolene a day and 5 mg diazepam (Valium) a day. I managed to reduce my intake of diazepam considerably over a 2 1/2 year period, but I have reached a plateau where reducing my medication would cause too many spasms. I've taken 120mg daily (30mg 4x daily) orally for 21 years per SCI MDs direction, though FDA advises 80mg daily as the maximum dosage. I've tried cutting back slowly several times, but anything below even 100mg daily has my legs spasming out of my shoes. 120mg works for me. 300mg daily sounds close to lethal. I don't know how one functions at all at that dosage let alone being sleepy. I hope you can work things out, Veranda. Definitely getting to see your doctor ASAP. The spams were so bad they were jerking me from sleep. Well i upgraded my pump on the 15th. For two days after that I was asleep. I could not pull myself from my sleep. I was really scared. Finally on 3rd day there was no more spams, no more sweating, and I was a wake. Since then my stomach was hurting. Well the pain went away last night after a week. But I am soo sleepy. What do you guys think? I was getting 280 dosage thru pump now i have 320. I'm so faustrated because if i go bk lower pump i'm scared toget spams sweats back. But i can't continue to be so sleepy.
