RE: [QUAD-L] What's the difference between tilt recline?

2005-07-07 Thread LesterSmith

Hi,

What I would suggest
is try both for a weekend.  A good
wheelchair sales person should let you try out a chair before you purchase
it.  I know Medicare with pay a good
amount on a TDX3 with recliner.  I had to
pay for the up-grades to the TDX5 myself.

RE: [QUAD-L] What's on your wish list for a new power chair?

2005-07-06 Thread LesterSmith

Hi,

I had both
recliner and tilts power chairs.  The recliner
type seemed to side me out of my chair when I reclined.  I have never had the problem on sliding out
of my chair with a tilt.  I got a falcon
tilt system and it works good so far.  With
the type of chair you need to figure if you want an outdoor or indoor
chair.  Do you want a
fast chair, and then you can widdle down the different types of chairs.  The omage track is assume if you want a great
out door chair, I once drove one of their chairs up and down stairs, it was
cool but it is a pricy chair.

Hi All,

 Five years
ago I got a new power chair and I'm just using it everyday now. I even had the
lock down bracket put on for driving $750 This chair is going wherever it wants
to. I feel like I've been on a rollacoster when I get out of this thing at the
end of the day.I feel like it's beating me up. Four time, so far, it just
suddenly STOPS. I'm just cruising along and bam, I'm dead but it will go again.
It's possessed something. It's an Invacare Action (I think a Ranger series)
Could it be because it sat for five years?

 Because it's been five
years I'm entitled to get a brand new power chair? I gave my w/c dealer a list
of six things that need to be modified to this chair, let me tell you the list.
1. new back 2. lower canes 3. raise the chair one inch 4. new foot plates 5.
new leg rest's 6. new arm rest's. That's a lot of modifications, isn't it?

Subject: [QUAD-L] IMS pile of junk

First a funny story, then a few questions.

I am unlucky enough to own a1998 Dodge Grand Caravan with an IMS
conversion.

Yesterday I took an 160 mile round trip to our cabin in the mountains.
I got through the first leg of my journey, turned off the hard road,
traveled
500 yards and turned into our 1/4 mile drive. The van stops! The motor
kept running, I just could not go forward or reverse. When giving it
gas,
the RPM's did not register, it was like it was on idle. There I was
by myself, 90 degrees, couldn't get out of the van and no cell signal.

OK God, I need my cell for just a few minutes, so moving around within
the
van,
opening the lift and A DIAL TONE! I called the garage, and my guardian
angel
arrives in about 15 minutes. I tried to start the van, no luck, he
sprayed
something in the carboratouer and off it goes. I go to the cabin, give
the
van
two hours to cool a little, stop at the garage on the way out,
everything
checks fine.
Just in case I ask for a can of the spray.

I traveled about 10 miles and thought, stop and get a cheap cooler, 6
bottles
of water
and a bag of ice. I was feeling pretty warm (early heat stroke) so I
asked
the manager if I could sit in the cooler room for 15 minutes. No, I
didn't get
any steaks while I was there.

The clerk loaded the cooler in my van and I'm in the parking lot pouring
a
bottle of water over my head and arms while two big, brawny, scruffy
bike guys
watch me like I've lost it.

I take off, travel 75-80 mph to get as far as I can, crossing a river
bridge
on an interstate, guess what. That's right, no power. Ah ha, an exit
right in
front of me
no traffic behind me or in front, so I drift into a stone parking lot at
the
bottom. Again, the van is running but no RPM's. At this point, by the
way
I'm not using the a/c just in case this may be contributing to the
problem, I'm
about ready to take a flying leap in the river, but instead pour another

bottle of water over me and start to eat ice. If I didn't have the ice
and water
it would definitely have been heat stroke time. Well, after 1 hour, the
state
police and AAA still hadn't found me. I kept
eating ice and pouring water.

After 90 minutes, I see the police car approaching, so I move so he can
see
me,
bye, bye, Mr. Policeman. He just kept going as I start waving my arms.
Two
guys talking in the parking lot saw him go, so they started waving and I
saw
his turn signal come on. GREAT! He comes back and bye, bye, he keeps
going.
One of the two guys jump out on the road and waves his arms and luckily
he was
looking in his rearview mirror. He comes back and there I was, looking
half
dead, wet from pouring water over my head, and he ask, Do I have a
problem?
He wasn't aware of any call.

Well, the poor little policeman in his clean prim and proper uniform
didn't
even have a screwdriver to loosen the hose from the carb. Luckily
another truck
pulled up at that moment and ask if he could help, and he had a
screwdriver.
As the very tidy officer sprayed the carb spray, the can sprung a leak
and
sprayed on his nice clean uniform. The idiot was more worried about
getting
dirty than the guy about ready for a heat stroke.

The van started, I the other 40 miles, praying and holding my breath as
I
came to exits. A five hour trip takes 10+ hours, almost as bad as
Gilligans
Island.

OK.

Did anyone have this van problem happen to them? They can't find
anything
wrong, but suspect the fuel pump. I've already put $2500.00 into the
door
mechanism over the past 18 months, now this!

Which brings me to a second question, did anyone need to have the door
motor
replaced, latch limit switches replaced and basically have so much
problems
with the door? They just can't seem to get it right.

Staying in the a/c, at least for today.

GA

Aaron,

I go
through an agency called Student Experience, which is basically an
agency like you want to start. My understanding the company was started
by a paralyzed female in Grand Rapids, MN that was having trouble with finding
PCA's. She figured she can do a better job finding people then the local
agencies so she hires only college people that are going into some type of
medical field, that's how she got the name. I've only been with this
agency since last November and truthfully, I'm really impressed with the
quality and reliability of the girls that I have. Student Experience does
a complete background check of the people and they try to place the workers to
a client that is in their field of schooling. I have a psychology
students going for her doctorate, to physical therapy is going for their
doctorate and to nurses going for their majors. I wish you the best of
luck in your new endeavor.

It looks like I get 4 Supplemental Insurance companies to pick from. I

My first Spring in AZ. It's great, 85 degrees here. It's a big change
from my past, I'm wearing short sleeve shirts for the first time in 23
years. Which means my first sunburn on my arms in 23 years. We moved
here in Sep. and we are on the South edge of a growing suburb. Only 1
close grocery store. It's said to be the fastest growing town in the
country. Already we have a number of stores and restaurants. A new
freeway building 2 miles away. They are building a Starbucks, Wallmart,
Costco, Samsclub, by the new freeway, plus tons of high-end stores near
by. It's funny, every time we see a new store we like, we get happy.
They are building a 10 acre park at the end of my street. 2 miles away
they are building a huge 100 acre watrerbird preserve, filled with parks
and paths, I can't wait. I got so lucky. We bought just after housing
started going up. We picked this area because of pricing, but before we
got here, they jumped lots. But after I bought, they sky rocketed.
Houses!
on my block are going for 35%-40% more than I paid. They are halfway
done building my pool. I'm not sure I will ever get in it, but I can't
wait to be out sitting by the pool in the sun. I spent 23 years
basically couped up sitting by the fireplace in my TV room, only getting
out a few times in summer. Now, even if I stay home, I'm at least going
outside, getting my niece from school, etc. Starting in March, on
Tuesday nights the city has free Music In The Park different live
bands, from rock to jazz to classic. Lots of cool things going on. I'm
sure lots of cities do these things, it's just I was always to cold to
go out in the nights. To you cold quads, moving somewhere warm can be a
life changer.

I use to live in Tucson and I loved the weather. I do not mind the summer either. Just zoom from air-conditioned house to the cool
car then wherever you are going. I am
thinking of moving back south the snow in Denver is a pain at times.

RE: [QUAD-L] Pressure sore solutions?

2005-03-21 Thread LesterSmith
Hi Larry,

I just recovered from a sore on my heel. It was a pain to get it to
heal. I used a wound-vac for a while, it helped a lot but it also gave
a yeast rash on my foot, warm and wet. After the sore filled in a
little I got a skin graph and that worked great. The heel is total
healed, it only took about nine months in all to heal that sore.

We were so thrilled! A few more days and it'll be closed completely.
Wrong!

It just stopped healing for, like you, about 2 months. Then diligence
in
putting on this or that on the wound and keeping it dry ... my husband
got
it closed in January.

But it still gets red, rashy and such so we found wearing a pad daily
helps.
And desitin or myconesal or whatever it seems to need ... is put on

missing. Breezy, Keith, the dude that had to move to a nursing home when
his parents were no longer able to take care of him, many more i can't
think of right now - what happened to them?

Anyhoo, I've just been introduced to a Supra Pubic - graduated from a
Foley. The more I deal with Urologists, the more incompetent they seem
to be. My first Uro said to change it every 3 months - #18 French. After
2 and 1/2 months I called him to say that something was wrong. I was
passing very little urine and what I was passing was very clear - not
junky as usual. Worse part, my abdomen was extremely distended and if I
strained to have a bowel movement, I would pass urine through my penis!
He said -'that's odd. I'll have a looknext week!?!' The next day
I was in the emergency room with a blocked cath and they couldn't remove
it because it had been it so long it had collected deposits on the end
of the cath that wouldn't let it pass through the stoma. Back in goes
the Folely. My new uro says - 'never go longer than 1 month between
changes'. Have you SP's out there ever experienced anything like this?

Wheelchair,

Here in Minnesota when I was going through DRS to get me
back to work and for all my drivers training, they told me back in 2001 that I
needed to purchase a brand-new 2001 Ford E-150 conversion van by Waldock or by
Elk. They specified that I should not
purchase the Ford factory conversion van because of the rear seat
placement. They told me that the rear
seat on the factory model is more towards the front of the vehicle and it would
need to be moved back. I'm sure they
specified and aftermarket conversion van just for the price of the adaptions
but I wish to see was moved back even further.
My point is, is that DRS told me exactly what to buy, which I did. I do wish I purc! hased a three-quarter ton
van not because my half ton van does not handle or ride well it is only because
the lighter duty tires make its sway more in the wind and on rougher roads. My
next set of tires will be a heavier truck tire with stiffer sidewalls. Unfortunately for me, when I inflate my tires
to maximum (41 pounds), which makes my van handle just great, they only last at
that pressure for a short amount of time before they level off at approximately
33 pounds. This is mind-boggling to me
but it must have something to do with the aluminum wheels.

As for all
the extra safety features on the new lifts, I think that is a bunch of BS
because every limit switch that they put on for safety is one more item that is
going to cause us problems with a specially in the winter months with the
extreme cold and snow.

I have the
Braun millennium II lift which works just great when the temperatures are above
20 degrees but I really wish that they had a power down that would be able to
be turned on and off for the winter months.
Waiting for the lift to lower in the winter is not only time-consuming
and inconvenient but can be hazardous and dangerous to our health. My remote control that I have for the Braun
lift is also a joke because you have to hold the buttons down for each
operation of the lift. I don't have a
problem holding the button down to open the doors but I guess to be obtained in
the butt especially in cold weather to hold each button down for unfolding and
lowering the lift itself. I'll issue is
my toggle switches that! are located on my rear light because I do not want to
wear the batteries out on my remote control.

van not because my half ton van does not handle or ride well it is only because
the lighter duty tires make its sway more in the wind and on rougher roads. My
next set of tires will be a heavier truck tire with stiffer sidewalls.

Vehicles - Other options

Does anyone here on the list drive any other
type of vehicle than a van? I want a truck Chevy Avalanche with the KVB Motors
adaptive package. I seen used vehicles 4sale that were owned by quads and
corresponded briefly with a quad in Canada about a 4x4 full sized Chevy truck.
Things didnt workout theres still a nice 1/2ton Z71 used truck with
Elaine lift a beautiful 2002 3/4ton 4x4 with Elaine lift for sale on
their site if any ones interested. If youve never seen the Elaine lift
take a look http://www.kvb.ca/used.htm
I love that we have other options I know a few quads that drive cars, simply
transfer themselves in out Ambers a C/6 C/7, Dericks a C6 incomplete,
Brandons C5-7 incomplete guess with practice anythings possible 4 some :) Im
lazy if I can stay in chair than let me.

I am
interviewing for a customer service position at Echostar. It is not the perfect job I want but it
better then nothing. I would prefer
something to do with Quality Assurance or project management but beggars cannot
be chooser. If I get it will keep me out of trouble and that is a good thing.

RE: [QUAD-L] Interviewing

2005-02-26 Thread LesterSmith
What I have done in the past was have an email account that had
Wheelchairman in it, the hiring manager kind of figured out that I had a
disability, I got the job.

Now I am not telling them anything until I roll in for the interview and
they see that I am in a wheelchair. They might be uncomfortable for a
moment but after a few seconds of talking to them; they do not seem to
care about the wheelchair.

I just wonder if I show start use the email with the Wheelchairman in it
or keep with my current strategy.

I disagree. If you are qualified, you are qualified. They cannot
hire/fire
because of a disability. If you tell them up front it gives them time
to
come up with an excuse to not even interview you. If they hire someone
with
lesser qualifications, then you can say 'foul'!

I would let them know up front and then do your thing. You wouldn't
want
 to
work for anyone who would consider having a spinal cord injury a
problem
