I forgot to say that they gave me an epidural first so I could stay awake.
That musta worked with the no-bad-feeling-at-all when she started the process

I think that was a good call and it WAS suggested by the anesthesiologist.
After all was going smoothly he just slipped me under enough to sleep through

I am finally doing it!  I am finally answering my e-mails from my posting of my
spinal cord injury July 10.

I find that I can not pronounce a simple word, no.  I got myself into a few
time-consuming projects and I said to myself today, self, answer your e-mails
before everyone thinks you died and went to heaven.

Okay, a few of you ask for some history.

I live on the banks of the Susquehanna River and spent a lot of my time
fishing, hunting and swimming in the river.  The weather prior to July 10, 1966
was very hot and we had a storm on Thursday.  My mother did not feel safe with
me boating in the river as it was possible to hit a submerged log or other
debris.  Instead she said that we could go to the local public pool, a safe
choice.  That was a decision that she had to live with for the rest of her life.

Someone jumped on my back as I was swimming, the lifeguard's girlfriend who was
sitting on the lifeguard stand because her boyfriend went home.  She was
as qualified as my dog.

Two teenagers that just completed a Red Cross course pulled me out.  I was not
breathing and for all intents and purposes, dead.

They rolled me around on the concrete, beat the back of my neck to clear my
airway, my partial denture dislodged and I started to breathe.

Fast-forward to 1969, I had spent the last 2 1/2 years in a state hospital for
crippled children.  Due to the fact we could not prove what happened at the
pool, we received $7,500 settlement and my hospital bill was paid.  Of course
there was no charge for the state institution that I was a resident for 2 1/2
years.

In the 1960s there was no regiment of treatment for spinal cord injury.  The
only thing positive that came out of the Vietnam War was that the government
put gobs of money into the paralyzed vets.

My parents finally had enough of their bull and sign me out of the hospital
December 1969.  The charge nurse took my father aside, told him to take me
home, buying me a television, and wait for me to die.

She is now dead, I have gone through 12 or more televisions, and I'm not
finished yet.  Do I buy a 32 inch, 37 inch, or 42 inch flat screen TV?  My, my,
I hate to make such big decisions.

Soon after I came home I started selling homemade fishing lures from my parents
garage.  I expanded somewhat into other fishing and hunting equipment.  In
ninth grade, one year before my injury, I took electronics 101 and loved it.  I
got caught up in the CB radio craze, started tinkering and soon knew what I
wanted to do.  I tried to get a grant from vocational rehabilitation for a home
correspondence course, but no go.  Their opinion was I could not physically
work on equipment.  I took the money that I made selling hunting and fishing
equipment along with money people would send me in cards and started to take a
home correspondence course.  After I was three quarters of the way through it,
they realized I was serious.

In 1973 I received my associate degree in electronics.  The CB radio craze was
still escalating and I took over my parents garage and devoted it entirely to
CB radios.  I hired a part time student to help work on CB radios and with in
18 months had two full-time technicians.  The room was getting quite cramped.

In 1975 I purchased a building lot across the street and built, with the help
of my father and brother, a ranch-style building that I used entirely for
electronics.  From CB radios I branched into other consumer electronics and
into the commercial radio field.

In 1981 I married, instant father of three children, and life went on.  My wife
was an executive secretary and was able to quit her job and work in the
business around 1985.  With in the next two years our advertising of fire
equipment service was in two national magazines as well as a magazine targeted
at Pennsylvania.  We sent semiannual mailers to fire departments in 13 states.
I had a niche, firemen want their equipment repaired yesterday, so our
advertising and our service focused on three to five days turnaround unless
repaired parts were needed.

In the early 1990s my wife needed a hip replacement, a fairly common procedure,
but the surgeon was going through a divorce and drinking heavily and taking
drugs.  He did everything wrong he could do wrong.  The two follow-up surgeries
to try and correct his mistakes ended with my wife having a stroke during
recovery because no one was monitoring the oxygen level to the brain.

She is now permanently disabled, uses a crutch, and has short term memory
problems.  Yes, we did sue the doctor, received a fair settlement, only to be
taken by the attorney and the state of

[QUAD-L] Nasty Nose Cancer

2009-04-20 Thread Tim Syfert
Just got through a nasty case of nose cancer. I had a stubborn sore on the top
front of my nose that just wouldn't completely heal up. I started getting
suspicious about it and went to a dermatologist. They biopsied it and sure
enough it came back showing the presence of basal cell cancer. It sounded like
they were just going to scrape a few layers of skin to remove it and then
repair the spot. What an upsetting shock I got. The cancer went all the way
down to my nose cartilage and all the way out to the front tip of my nose. The
surgery was as if the surgeon took a mini backhoe and went about a third of the
way up my nose, dug down, and dug forward straight out through the front of my
nose. The whole front part of the rounded part of the tip of my nose was gone.
I could not figure out how it would be possible to repair such a deep crater
with so much missing tissue. I had the repair surgery done about 3 weeks ago
which involved taking skin/fat from the
side of my neck and graft it on. This past week I had the stitches removed and
got a good look and under the circumstances she did a wonderful job. Not
exactly the same looking but it's better than what I thought. She said the
entire healing process will take about a year.

I know a lot of us quads like to get out in the sun and enjoy the warmth of the
rays. Please be carefull. I don't know if sunscrean lotions really protect as
much as advertised. I'd still got a little burned with it on. If you ever have
a sore on your face/shoulders/ back or really anywhere that is being stubborn
in healing up, get it checked out asap. Basal cells seem to be a common problem
on the face. They are very slow working and not life threatening if caught and
removed early enough. Fortunately my surgeon was able to remove all the cancer.
She feels that the cancer started internally maybe as long as two years ago. I
dodged a bullet.

Greg,

For dampness, I purchased a small battery operated fan similar to the one at

Any time I am in bed, I have the fan blowing on my groin area to help keep it
dry. I maximize the effectiveness by keeping my legs in a frog leg position,
which also reduces my spasms. I set the fan on the lowest setting so the
batteries don’t have to be changed often. I use rechargeable batteries.

For dryness and cracking, I use Bag Balm.

Works for me.

Good luck,

Are you guys talking about instant oatmeal in the little packets?

I never considered oatmeal that expensive compared to other cereals.  I use
whole milk or 2 % and nuke the mix until the milk is almost absorbed.  Then I
add Watkins Natural Vanilla and sprinkle brown sugar.  Taste is great and its
good for you.

Thanks Tim.  I've been an advocate for Apple Cider Vinegar and Honey for
years.  I acquired this information from Vermont Folk Medicine or New England
Folk Medicine written by a MD who, at that time, still practiced, home visits.
Its never left me down either.

Oh, BTW, wait until you have tried some oatmeal in your diet too.

Re: [QUAD-L] LORI: New Permobil

2008-09-04 Thread Tim Syfert
Hi Lori,

Sorry for the slow reply. Have still been a little tired from the surgery.

Yes, my old chair was a Quikie. I had it 8 years. The is my first Permobil.
Most of my years with the Quikie I was stuck having to get it serviced by
Apria. I'm sure as many here know their chair service got so bad. It was
rediculous having to wait 6-12 months for service. I heard a number of weeks
ago the Apria sold off their durable equipment division to some other company
so I guess they are out off the chair business now. I got my Permobil through a
business here in Vegas that only deals in accessible mini vans and chairs. The
proccess I went through was very smooth and only took a month compared to three
months with previous chairs. This new chair has the typical tilt feature but I
really like the recline feature too. I think it helps better with pressure
relief to get in a more stretched out position. I've been using Rohos for
twenty years so the chair came with one of those. The backrest has a nice
contour to it with a nice soft almost rubbery
feel to it which is just velcroed on. I have both Medicare and Medicaid so it
all got covered.

Hi Tim!

Great to get a new chair!  Thumbs up!

My Permobil Chairman is 9 1/2 years old now.  The upholstery on the back
armrests  started going about 4 years ago and now I find lil black specks
everywhere (even on my neck, etc SOMEHOW!).  I also have the tilt and recline
and use the tilt feature constantly!

My last chair, a Fortress Scientific, only had a recline feature but I loved
that chair for the 12 years I was in in it.  The back of the chair was very
thick and pretty much hollow so it felt much better than the one that comes
with the Permobil.  Even though I had extra foam put in the back of this
Permobil -- it STILL feels so hard OR my chronically hurting back is
oversensitive.  I don't know which.

There was a discussion here over a year ago about those of us here who have
Permobils and have felt that their back has hurt worse.  Any of those of you
still out there?  I think there were about four of us including me.

Like many ... no idea what my next chair (long overdue) choice will be.  I've
been in my ~comfort zone~ with it by being in my Permobil almost a decade now
and am leery to change.  Hubby says no more Permobils (for many reasons) but he
is not the one in the chair all day long either!

I really regret NOT getting the elevated feature so it would be much easier to
get batteries put in.  It has been a major hassle for me to stay in bed to get
new batteries put in while my husband has to take it to the vendor and they
turn it on its side or something.

After spending 12 years in my last chair... it took me awhile (months) to get
used to my Permobil back in early 1999.

* How was your new cair paid for Tim -- if I might ask?  And who was the vendor
that you will continue to go to for services?  That also seems to be a major
problem for many of us.  I also forgot which state you live in?

* I also can't remember... is this your first Permobil or did you have one
before?  Although you did mention your Quickie so I assume that was your
previous chair.  Did your body adjust to it right away?

* Are you just sitting on the bucket seat or are you using a special cushion
instead?  I sat in the bucket seat up until four years ago with no skin
problems whatsoever that were pressure related.  But I decided to take the
opportunity to have Medicare pay for a cushion after my last wound caused by
moisture.  It is called a VARILITE cushion.

It is so weird sometimes when you find that your body cannot easily go back
to something.  About a year ago as I would go back to using the bucket seat but
my body screamed NO I really bad feelings and spasms.

The same happened when, after sitting in my Permobil for about a year and
finally gotten used to it, I went to go back to try Old Faithful one day and my
body reacted the same and I had to go back to bed and switch chairs!

I notice the bumps just as much as any other chair I have used.  The big front
wheels go over everything smoothly but the smaller back wheels make everything,
including sidewalks operations, a definite KA-THUD all the time... therefore
jarring my body.

Thanks for sharing that you are happy with it!  I think I only have 5 questions
(yikes!) but I would be much obliged if you would answer them.
Best,
Lori Michaelson

Well, I got the SP done and kidney stone busted up on Thursday although my doc
kept me in the hospital over night, which was ok. I feel a little wiped out
today but I'm sure I'll be feeling better in a few day.

There's a lot of blood in my urine which I'm sure is normal but my doc didn't
say too much about it just that everything went well. I'm on Cipro for 5 days
which is good.

Those of you who have gotten SP's did you have blood in your urine for a number
of days???

It's amazing how the smallest things can put us in serious situations. Years
ago I had a full size Dodge van and me and my pca loaded up to run an errand
but we forgot something in the house. He ran inside to get it and while he was
gone smoke began pouring out from under the dash. There were no windows open
and it was filling up with smoke fast. When he got back he saw what was
happening and got me out pronto. It turned out that a wire had shorted and all
the insulation had burned off. Fortunately there were no flames.

top end with alternating pressure and low air loss while rotating the patient
according to a timer. It can cost over 9G. If your on a fixed budget, you may

Plan to 'chip' Alzheimer's patients causes protest 19 May 2007
NewScientist.com news service Celeste BieverIT LOOKS deceptively familiar.
The patient rolls up his sleeve, the doctor sticks a needle into his arm,
and soon it's all over. But this is no routine vaccination. Instead, the
patient has been injected with a fleck of silicon that will uniquely
identify him when zapped with radio waves. Now, nearly three years after their
use was approved by the US Food and Drug Administration, implantable radio
frequency identification (RFID) chips are the focus of a new controversy.
The battle lines are being drawn in a quiet corner of West Palm Beach, Florida.
On 12 May, some 30 protesters held an inter-faith prayer vigil (pictured
above) outside Alzheimer's Community Care, a day-care facility for people
with dementia. At issue is the facility's plan to implant 200 patients with
microchips manufactured and donated by VeriChip of nearby Delray
Beach. When scanned, the chip reveals a unique ID number, which when
entered into a password-protected database gives access to medical information
about its owner. If the plan goes ahead, it will be the first time the
technology has been tried on a group of people with a specific mental
impairment. The forgetfulness that comes with Alzheimer's can make it
impossible for people with the condition to pass on vital information when
faced with a medical emergency, which is why advocates are keen to make use
of RFID chips with this group. If for whatever reason - an automobile
accident or hurricane - the person becomes separated from their loved one,
they are totally, totally helpless. They can't share what medically is wrong
with them, says Mary Barnes of Alzheimer's Community Care. This could be a
safety net.Privacy advocates say that it is precisely this helplessness
that makes the proposed use of the tags unacceptable. This is a
community that is not in a position to give fully informed consent or to
say no, says Katherine Albrecht of CASPIAN, an Internet-based consumer rights
organisation. The nature of the disease is that they can't fully
understand.Albrecht likens the violent and invasive act of implanting a
chip in someone who does not have the ability to consent to the act of rape.
Others agree with the sentiment, if not the comparison. This is by definition
a way of doing something that denies a person control, says Lee Tien of the
Electronic Frontier Foundation in San Francisco. If that doesn't strike at
the heart of human dignity, I don't know what does. He and Albrecht would
rather see a chip implanted in a bracelet.Barnes says a bracelet would
not be nearly as useful. People might remove it if it got uncomfortable,
especially those with Alzheimer's, who might not understand why they should
wear it.Bracelets could also label people as
mentally ill, whereas an implanted chip is much less obvious, says Rick
Rader of the Orange Grove Center in Chattanooga, Tennessee. The centre,
which cares for children with Down's syndrome, cerebral palsy and autism, was
in the media spotlight two years ago when it considered using VeriChip's
device in a similar study on its patients, a plan that has since been put on
the back burner. At the time there was an outcry from those who saw an
implantable RFID as reminiscent of the mark of the beast, as described in
the book of Revelations. As explained on Albrecht's website, the Bible
states that people who take the mark of the beast - a mark on the right hand
or the forehead that contains a number or a name that is required for buying

  LAUS DEO

One detail that is not mentioned, in DC, is that there can never be a building
of greater height than the Washington Monument.

With all the uproar about removing the ten commandments, etc... This is worth a
moment or two of your time. I was not aware of this historical information.
On the aluminum cap, atop the Washington Monument in Washington, DC, are
displayed two words: Laus Deo. No one can see these words. In fact, most
visitors to the monument are totally unaware they are even there and for that
matter, probably couldn't care less.

Once you know Laus Deo's history, you will want to share this with everyone you
know. But these words have been there for many years; they are 555feet, 5.125
inches high, perched on top of the monument, facing skyward to the Father of
our nation, overlooking the 69 square miles which comprise the District of
Columbia, capital of the United States of America.

Laus Deo! Two seemingly insignificant, un-noticed words. Out of sight and, one
might think, out of mind, but very meaningfully placed at the highest point
over what is the most powerful city in the most successful nation in the world.

So, what do those two words, in Latin, composed of just four syllables and only
seven letters, possibly mean? Very simply, they say Praise be to God!

Though construction of this giant obelisk began in 1848, when James Polk was
President of the United States, it was not until 1888 that the monument was
inaugurated and opened to the public.

It took twenty five years to finally cap the memorial with a tribute to
the Father of our nation, Laus Deo ...Praise be to God!

From atop this magnificent granite and marble structure, visitors may take in
the beautiful panoramic view of the city with its division into four major
segments.

From that vantage point, one can also easily see the original plan of
the designer, Pierre Charles l'Enfant ..a perfect cross imposed upon the
landscape, with the White House to the north. The Jefferson Memorial is to the
south, the Capitol to the east and the Lincoln Memorial to the west.

A cross you ask? Why a cross? What about separation of church and state? Yes,
a cross; separation of church and state was not, is not, in the Constitution.

So, read on. How interesting and, no doubt, intended to carry a
profound meaning for those who bother to notice.
Praise be to God!

Within the monument itself are 898 steps and 50 landings. As one
climbs the steps and pauses at the landings the memorial stones share a message

On the 12th Landing is a prayer offered by the City of Baltimore; on
the 20th is a memorial presented by some Chinese Christians; on the 24th a
presentation made by Sunday School children from New York and Philadelphia
quoting Proverbs 10:7, Luke 18:16 and Proverbs 22:6.Praise be to God!

When the cornerstone of the Washington Monument was laid on July 4th, 1848
deposited within it were many items including the Holy Bible presented by the
Bible Society. Praise be to God!

Such was the discipline, the moral direction, and the spiritual mood
given by the founder and first President of our unique democracy .One Nation,
Under God.

I am awed by Washington's prayer for America. Have you never read it? Well,
now is your unique opportunity, so read on!

Almighty God; We make our earnest prayer that Thou wilt keep the United States
in Thy holy protection; that Thou wilt incline the hearts of the citizens to
cultivate a spirit of subordination and obedience to government; and entertain
a brotherly affection and love for one another and for their fellow citizens of
the United States at large. And finally that Thou wilt most graciously be
pleased to dispose us all to do justice, to love mercy, and to demean ourselves
with that charity, humility, and pacific temper of mind which were the
characteristics of the Divine Author of our blessed religion, and without a
humble imitation of whose example in these things we can never hope to be a
happy nation Grant our supplication, we beseech Thee, through Jesus Christ our
Lord. Amen.
Laus Deo!

When one stops to observe the inscriptions found in public places all over our
nation's capitol, he or she will easily find the signature of God, as it is
unmistakably inscribed everywhere you look.

You may forget the width and height of Laus Deo, its location, or the
architects but no one who reads this will be able to forget its meaning, or
these words:Unless the Lord builds the house its builders labor in vain.
Unless the Lord watches over the city, the watchmen stand guard in vain.

looked up at her I know at that very moment I was going to die and said:” Mom
I’m dying.” All of a sudden everything went black. Then I was surrounded by
Angles. The room became a beautiful golden light. I heard sounds of wind chimes
and Angels were taking me up into the light. I turn and saw so many doctors
working on me. They were racing around and putting a tube down my throat. One
of the doctors garbed a long suction cup that is attached to a machine and
places it again my chest. The other doctor said: “clear” and my body jump up
from the bed. They were using the electricity paddle over and over, but the
doctors couldn’t get my heart started. Each time they used the paddles my body
arch up and full to the bed, but I wanted to go with the
Angels. All at once I was by a river. It was beautiful on the other side it
was like looking into the Garden of Eden. I saw a man surrounded by a golden
light. He held out his arms and said:” If it is to pain full come across.” It
was JUSES! Oh how I wanted to go to him. I turn my head, and saw the doctors
still working to save my life. I looked at Jesus he told me that he had so much
more for me to do on earth. I was asked if you can not take the pain just cross
the river! I said:” Yes I could take the pain.” All at once I want back into
my body and was in a coma. Later I found out I was dead for five minutes. The
doctor told my family that I was in Gods hands. The only thing to do was to
pray.
After three weeks I woke up from the coma. A nurse was standing beside me. I
ask her is it time to wake up. She jumped back like she heard the voice of God.
That is when she ran to get the doctor, I was upset because I wanted to go back
to see Jesus! When the doctor came in he to was surprised to see me awake. He
told me I was in a coma for three weeks and he didn’t know if I would have came
out of it. There was a lot of people praying for you young lady. Doctor David
Smith only had one arm. He knows what he was doing. God Bless Him.
I wanted to add to this story that I know God has used me in so
many ways. I know that the Lord is with me everyday of my life. Even though
sometimes I just want to be in that heavenly place, and feel that inner peace.
I know that it is not my decision to make, it is the Lords

It appears with this game the stock gets sold at the closing price. I did
discover why it won't let you buy certain stocks. It only lets you purchase
stocks with a market cap of at least $500,000,000 on any exchange (NYSE, AMEX,
NASDAQ). That's good cause it eliminates the penny stocks from the contest.

Yesterday I was at 32% but today 37%. My portfolio, which is just one stock now

tomorrow. It appears the ranking reflects the previous days close.

Some four weeks ago CNBC began their one million dollar investment contest.
Since that time, the Dow Jones industrial average has had one of the worst
quarterly losses in the last decade. This is wonderful since 60 to 70 percent
of the people that signed up when the contest began have portfolios that are
underwater, portfolios significantly below the one million dollars allotted
when they signed up for the contest. The one million dollars is, of coarse,
fictitious; but the person with the highest capital gains at the end of the
contest, still eight weeks away, will win an annuity of one million dollars.

I have been bedridden with a sore on my foot from my new wheelchair rest,
using my bedside computer and DragonDictate to trade. Currently I am in the
top 20 percent. If I was able to utilize the computers in my office with the
multiple screens, I would probably be somewhat higher. Be this as it may, I
have been trading stocks for 21 years, betting on the future movement in the
price of a security with technical analysis.

For the benefit of my fellow wheelchair-bound companions, I have spent this
weekend sifting through 1800 securities to find only those that fit the
criteria in the stock challenge. From that list I studied only those companies
whose stock did not exceed 15.00 A Share. The reason for this is to capture a
large percentage gain which will ultimately decide the winner. On the other
hand, the losses will be of a high percentage also. Simply put, you can buy a
great deal of shares with a million dollars when the stock price is 10 dollars
a share, as opposed to a stock price being over 100 dollars.

Go to the CNBC website and join the one million dollar contest. The
registration list is very simple with no more than a half dozen questions. Put
all your million dollars into any one of the stocks listed below, or divided
between different securities. I would not suggest stretching it past two
companies, for this contest is simply a hit or miss. The prize last year was a
Lamborghini, and that person put all his million dollars into one stock.

I would love to see one of us going to the CNBC studio in a wheelchair to
collect the prize. Good luck:
Peter, 25 Long yrs C/4-C/5 With debilitating neuropeptide pain to boot!

[QUAD-L] Miracle Mist Plus offer

2006-12-07 Thread Tim Syfert
I received the below email from Sharon Gardner from the company that
distributes the Miracle Mist Plus wound care spray for a Christmas discount
offer. Tim

We are making a special offer just to members of the Quad-List.
If you order by phone before Christmas, we'll give you $5 off per bottle
PLUS free shipping. (No Limit) This is actually better than any deal we've
ever given. Sometimes we have free shipping, but you pay the full $29.95 per
bottle. Other times we've had money off, but you had to pay the full shipping
of $6.95. With free shipping and $5 off, the total will be $24.95.
To receive this offer just mention the Quad-List and you must order by
phone 1-800-217-6677 before Christmas. You can learn more about the product at
www.healthylifeandtimes.com but you can not get this special by ordering
through the internet. The good news is it really does do wonders for pressure
sores, even ones that are years old. Merry Christmas!

It causes the muscles to contract and the sphincter to release the urine in several flows. Because of it I can use an external catheter and avoid all the infections from indwelling catheters. It is just a gentle serious of taps on the tummy and then the bladder muscles contract and empty it. By the way, the sediment is usually caused when you have a bladder that is not emptying. This allows bacteria to grow in the bladder, often causing stones to form which in turn cause more bacteria to grow. I'm still
a proponent of anti-infectives and large doses of vitamin C. For those of you on anti biotics, try that new Dan-active from Dannon between doses and see if it really helps avoid the constipation and the runs that are so common with anti biotic use. Re: [QUAD-L] Re: Angelique and Sandy

2006-07-26 Thread Tim Syfert
I don't think it is possible to totally understand God's reasoning for all the suffering that goes on. When Adam Eve opened the doorto evil, why didn't God just destroy them and start over again. Who knows. So, we're all stuckwith suffering from that ongoingevil. We all learned early on that this world is f'ed up and like the old bumper sticker says, 'shit happens'.I wishGod would just step right in and prevent bad thingsfrom happening, but for some reason He chose to establish this current world system as we know it. At some point in my life I just accepted that fact. When I was a child and got hurt or went through some trial, Iwent to my parents for help and comfort. I do the same thing today with God. I'll never know the answer to the big WHY question, but I feel my acceptence in the way this current world is has helped me rid my angertowards God, and instead turn to Him for comfort during my times of
trials. That's really about all we can do.Maybe after this life I'll know the answer to WHY.TimSilas [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Angelique,Before my injury I really believed that there was a kind loving God, don't get me wrong I still pray but I get so angry I have trouble with keeping the faith. alien abduction and implantation! The church always has been a business, and a front for "justifiable" murders. Hello, Spanish Inquisition. It always will be about money and control. The holy rollers have held medical science back long enough! Let stem cell research of any kind happen. I'd donate my eggs! As far as I'm concerned, being trapped inside your body, looking out from behind your eyes is hell! Besides, (if you believe Christian mythology), isn't saying, "I'm sorry," before dying, all it takes to still get passed the pearly gates, no matter how horrible a person you were? That's how I remember most church sermons going. So what's the big deal?! YES ON HR 810! -Angelique
