Re: [QUAD-L] Medical Help

2008-04-21 Thread Quadius

I kept asking advice about the bowel problems I was having when I
couldn't get satisfactory responses from my doctor. It wasn't that he was
not trying, it's just that we weren't getting any resolution. After several
people kept extolling the virtues of oatmeal I decided to try it every day
and found it to be a godsend. Lately I have discovered that my bowel
regimen has been reduced by about 30 to 45 minutes just by eating a lot more
leafy green vegetables. Previously I was told I was eating too many and
having too much fiber. It's funny how the body changes.

2008-04-20 Thread Stacy Harim
When I was first paralyzed and came home, I didnt know what was what and not
one to run to the hospital. I was not driving and had to have two days notice
to get transportation and not able to get into friends cars. I wasn't about to
pay for an ambulance unless I was sure it was a problem. I know that there are
things that I questioned only to find out its a normal thing. I was freaked
out about swelling to find that it's normal. My pain and spasms gradually got
worse only to find out that pain and spasms are normal. I did go to the doctor
about those things but it is nice to know to throw the questions out there to
see how 'normal' they are according to paralysis.

It really amazes me at the number of people who write to this list asking for
medical advice or if they should go to the doctor to get something checked out.
As helpful as everyone on this list tries to be, I don't think anyone here can
offer real medical advice to someone without knowing their medical history or
the severity of the medical issue in question. Maybe it's just me, but if
ANYTHING is out of the ordinary for me, I call the doctor's office and schedule
an appointment, unless of course, I need to go to emergency. I would think
that after most of what us quads have been through, we should not hesitate to
get medical attention. It could mean the difference between life and death.
If it isn't anything that severe, at least we've had it checked out and know
what's going on. At least that's my two cents worth.

RE: [QUAD-L] Medical Help

2008-04-19 Thread Greg
I don't think we are giving medical advice as much as we are giving people
questions they might want to ask their doctors.

In almost every e-mail I've read, the writer or replier, mention going to
the doctor. It's the patients responsibility to be prepared.

Plus, it really helps to get opinions, even if he writer doesn't know the
medical history. Many of doctors we see do not know a lot about quads and
bring in questions is go.

And sometimes we might have symptoms that we never had before and can't find
the problem. Someone here might have had the same symptoms. It may not be
the same thing, but at least it gives a good place to start looking. Of
course if there is anything wrong, you should always go see a real doctor.

I certainly AM NOT seeking medical advice here. Are you nuts? I look for
information on the other side of the fence. Personal experiences, issues,
doctor horror stories, and what is working or not with me.

I agree with you 100%. But I also realize that it may not be that easy for
some or a few. Doctors are busy. Hospitals are miles away. There are 100
excuses and reasons.
Has anyone enlisted a Nurse Practioner to manage their personal healthcare
vs a medical doctor? Seems like there are more NP than doctors that are
regularly available. Nurse Practioner can often be just as effect as a
primary
doctor for the simple things.
Also, when in doubt, call the ER or Prompt Response clinics and ask.

I for one, ask questions just to see if I am the only one feeling this way.
Today I asked a question on another list got the name I have been looking for
- Motility. That is what I have. I was great full for all the help that was
given.

Nurse practitioners are very wise will take more time with you than doctors.
If it gets to anything they don't know, the doctor is available.

W,

I have used the services of a nurse practitioner, when the doctor wasn't
available. The service was exceptional. She seemed to have more time to
spend
with me on each visit. I was very satisfied with the results.

I see a Physician's Assistance (PA) for nearly everything for the same
