Re: [QUAD-L] Thanks
I read about quads from the 60s. 70s 80s on google and how long they lived. some are still alive and that gives me hope. If another man did it than that means someone else can do it to. I told my mother. at my funeral , make it clear that I tried and did what I could. For reasons I wont discuss I have had little to no contact with any family except mom , dad and bro since the accident . keep rolling as Diane said. Hey everyone, Thanks for the response I received about the hands-free telephone. I really appreciated the input, unfortunately, I am TECHNOLOGICALLY challenged and don't really understand about magnets, etc... As someone said in a movie talk to me like I am a six-year-old. A recent friend of mine (Glenn) recommended this site and I am very glad because everyone knows the difficulties of life as a quadriplegic. As I said earlier, the phone must be entirely hands-free for me to operate it. My problem lies in the fact that I am not sure how much I will need the phone. I have my Masters Degree in Nursing, live at home with my parents (who are elderly)--have a sitter who works week days. I say this because I need to go back to work (from home) using the computer and/or the telephone. I am enrolled in the Social Security Ticket to Work program because from what I've seen a nursing home is no place for a quadriplegic--without sitters who will work more hours than I can afford (without going back to work). One of my options, is telephone triage which would require easy, effective use of the telephone. I appreciate any input. Thanks, Larry W Hopkins
RE: [QUAD-L] Thanks
Good afternoon Larry It would probably help with question if you would say what level you are, and how much function you actually have. Most of us on here were technologically challenged before having to use technology. (as for me, I can remember when we lived in Germany and I wanted to call home to Reno, I had to place the call 24 hours before and and the operator came on and said that my number was ready to be dialed I want to go through with a phone call at this time!) Computers are magnificently improving and voice recognition is moving ahead leaps and bounds. You might want to go to NUANCE website and check out Dragon. They have many versions of Dragon and a medical one also. One difficulty of doing Triage would be using the phone and the computer simultaneously by voice. Don't jump into anything too expensive or too permanent until you have looked at many options. Have you already been through your state's vocational rehabilitation services? Depending upon the state, they might have more resources and many states have technological labs so that you can try different things and they will train you with that. Many of us use different voice and communication options starting with Jim Lubin who started this great list. Ask away, the only question that is a stupid question is no question that didn't get asked. Hi List Readers Well I'm home from my 8 day holiday to Southern California, and it was awesome. But first I'd like to thank Don P for his recent post from the Reeve Foundation. I've been wondering about getting an iPhone or ipad and their website is full of relevant info about their use by us. But my trip, we flew Air New Zealand who are great, couldn't have been any better really nice people eager to help. As I'm a c4/5 I used an 'eagle-lift' to get in and out of my aircraft seat, at LAX they told me I was only the 2nd person to use their' s. Basically it's a sling type electric hoist, I stayed in my power chair to the aircraft door. They then put sling under you, hoist you up and wheel you with the eagle to your seat (first on). The eagle then sort of straddles your seat (1 leg being your seat, other in front) then you are lowered to your seat. The sling removed and that's it, I did sit on my roho for the 12 hour flight also. Then :- Accessible super shuttle from lax to desert palms, Anaheim where we stayed, taxi and hotel not too dear ok for accessibility. First night, bubba Gump scrimp co. restaurant, good value food, even had lieutenant Dan wheeling around ! Next day Disneyland, great experience, ya gotta do it, went on a few rides the monorail. Next day had a rental kneeling Dodge van delivered from Mobilityworks, great van, people and service. This we drove to universal studios and did the train tour there, was fun. Next day Getty Centre, WOW, man you have to go there before y'all die, its freakin fantastic. Land, carpark, tramway, gardens, building, art, the whole think blew my mind, even hit me on an emotional level. GO THERE ! Next day, shopping at the Citadel, great place, 142 shops, everything there, cheap as, better than duty free. Got levis and skeechers that fitted my big frame $40 each. Did rain however but still great. Last couple of days, at Disney and looking around Anaheim. Then back to lax and home again. Thanks to the US of A, and you folks here for your pointers. [QUAD-L] thanks for the invite so far... and a question about computer games
It is nice to find a forum which focuses on the needs of quadriplegics. Thank you very much for your replies to my earlier questions. I can now cut and paste using Dragon NaturallySpeaking, and I have been researching some of the quality of life related organizations you have referred me to. On another issue: have you found any computer games which you can play using Dragon NaturallySpeaking? Three games I have enjoyed are: Snood (free trial version available) Web sudoku Minesweeper (included with at least some versions of the Microsoft operating system) It seems there are precious few games which do not require manual dexterity. I would be especially interested in learning about any online role-playing games which can be played patiently and strategically. Take care, Dave Krehbiel
RE: [QUAD-L] thanks for the invite so far... and a question about computer games
Welcome aboard Dave You can get a lot of information from people on this site. And most of it is with a great sense of humor which is necessary to deal with being a quad. J In 1990 when I was first injured I was at Santa Clara rehab and they had a Macintosh and were just beginning to teach people to use the computers. Ironically I had a Macintosh SE at home so I was already up to date, but I hadn't played any games on it to speak of, except for Shanghai or Mahjongg. I still play it in the newer versions are fantastic compared to 1990. I do not use dragon but I use windows seven speech recognition and except for the normal problems with external noise that is inherent with speech recognition it works very well. Don't know if you would consider mahjongg a game, but I enjoy it. Joan C4 1990

Greetings Again, My internet searches of DME and Providers in Jordan, Saudi Arabia was not very rewarding, in terms of finding the name of those companies providing wheelchairs and scooters in your country. Perhaps, I was using the wrong terminology as I know that Jordan is rich in resources for those with disAbilities and the organizations which support them. I'm sure their titles are different there which complicates any search. I did see where some corporate efforts were made in Jordan, to supply a free wheelchair to individuals in need. I also hope that, by now, you have made contact with the organization, Friends of Joni _www.joniandfriends.org_ (http://www.joniandfriends.org) They collect and distribute free wheelchairs worldwide. Ron, I once chose to become a Florida State trooper and loved the job, but I have also seen many people suffer a similar fate. It's sad when many of the people out there trying to be good public servants are betrayed by the very system they are sworn to defend. Hi Michael. What took you so long to find this list...just curious. Glad you found this site. It is very helpful wether you are a new quad or a older. I am not a quad but my boyfriend is. He is a member here. Fell off a trampoline. I have learned a lot on here. Welcome and please feel free to put in your 2 cents worth on here. I, for one don't always post. But usually jump in on things that interest me. Amy Michael Galvin [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Thanks for all of the hello's. Thanks John. I forgot to say it is an intermittent cath, so when I insert it my bladder is usually full. That is why I usually have a stream instead of a trickle. Is your output normal? It should be draining your bladder as the urine drains from your kidneys. this doesn't normally happen in streams. It, however, can happen. I would pay attention to amount of output and color as well as oder. Ideally, make a list of questions and ask your urologist. I haven't used a cath in a while and I'm going from memory. Re: [QUAD-L] thanks for the optometrist feedback!
The optometrist I go to has a wheelchair room and you don't have to use transfer, which is great. I don't know with all doctors have this. Getting transferred is always a problem. My gynecologist also happens to have a wheelchair room, were you transfer into a lowerchair that moves, much easier than a table,. Getting transferred is always a problem there's never enough manpower. At least at the wound center they seem to have persons to transfer. We are usually a minority in their clientele.I agree with you about clinics, that is why I stopped going to KU, or it was treated for my spinal cord injury). I prefer to go to a smaller hospital or a group that is not like a clinic, and you are there all day. Of course it depends on how organized it is. Hi Susan, My Mom is 76 and had a 5-way bypass done in 1998. She recentlyhad some tests indicate one of the 5 arteries needed to be re-opened and a shunt placed in it. She went in for this on Monday, the 17th of Oct., and the Surgeon decided the shunt wasn't needed after looking at the arterywith a scope. I understand your father's concern, and while my Mom doesn't have a SCI, she does have diabetes. I can tell you that once she had the bypass her strength, enthusiasm, and stamina was so much better than before. I would think getting the bypass out of the way will clear the way for further progress for your Dad. I'll keep him in my thoughts and prayers. Stay strong. Date: Mon, 1 Aug 2005 20:52:51 -0700 (PDT) Hi JT, I'm sorry that this feedback is getting to you so late. First, let me welcome you to the Quad-List. As Lori says you've already received some good responses so I'll just add mine to them. Every SCI case is different, just as every person is different, but one thing most of us will agree on is that the first couple of years after a SCI are the hardest. It may not be that life gets better but you'll learn to deal with life in a better way. I was white-water rafting on the Upper Salt River in '76 when I broke my neck at C4-5. I was 22 and had been married for 5 years. We had two sons, 5 2 1/2, and I was managing the second largest car-wash in Phoenix (Freeway Car Wash, Black Canyon Highway Camelback Rd.) at the time. Part of my pay package was an insurance policy on me and my family, but the place had been sold to a new man in Jan. of '76, and he had changed insurance carriers, and to save money the new policy went into effect on May 01 and the old policy expired April 15. I should have been on top of that but I was running the place, keeping the books straight, and doing all of the hiring firing, and that little gap of two weeks went unnoticed until I broke my neck April 25! Well, the old company felt real bad but they couldn't do anything to help, and the new company's policy hadn't taken effect yet so they felt real bad but they couldn't help, either. Life sure has a sense of humor! I did my rehab at Good Sam, and took the ACT and with the help of VR I started taking classes at GCC. I was taking the PT's advice and was pushing myself around campus in a manual chair. I made the Dean's List the first semester and was on my face most of the time letting my bottom heal through the next semester. I went back the next semester and made the Dean's List again, and spent the next 6 months letting the flap surgery I had to have done on my bottom heal. With all of that time to think about my priorities my wife and I decided that it would be better if she went to work and I stayed home with the boys. By this time life was starting to seem ''normal'' and things were looking better. I was staying out of the hospital, had taken a position on the PTA Board at my boys school, and my wife was working days. Life seemed like it would be okay but going in a new direction. I took over running our home, getting the boys through school, and keeping my wife involved, etc. Now, I know everyone is different, so by when I noticed that my wife was having trouble sleeping and showing other signs of depression we sat down and had a good long talk. After talking with a councilor we were able to see that my wife felt like she wasn't contributing to our family, and that because we had married young she felt that there wasn't anything that she could look at and get the satisfaction that she'd accomplished that on her own. She felt like her dad had taken care of her until we married and I had taken care of her since then. I knew she was an equal partner in everything we had, but knowing something and changing the way someone feels are very different things. We discussed different ideas but I could tell that if things continued the way they were going that in a year, maybe two, what she was feeling as dissatisfaction would turn to anger, and eventually hate, and it would be directed toward me. So, in early '85 we came up with a plan that while I knew would be hard on me and our boys in the short run, would be the best thing for us all in the long run. We decided that we would sell our home and she and our boys would move back to central MI where she grew-up and get a place that she felt was her own. I moved back to Lincoln Park, a suburb of Detroit. I would be far enough away so she would feel that she was going it alone, but close enough that my boys could come to visit when we needed to see each other. The plan was for her to take two years and if she didn't think she had made the right decision we'd get back together and go on from there. By late '86 she had succeeded in creating a new home and life that she felt she could call her own. The boys had adjusted to the changes and I decided that she would be okay on her own, so I made the decision to move back to AZ where the weather was better suited for me. The boys would stay with Mom and spend the summers with me. I had an Uncle that lived in Arlington, TX that asked me if I wanted to spend a few weeks with them before going on to AZ. I agreed and was staying with them for the start of the New Year, 1987.
Re: [QUAD-L] Thanks Dave
Hi Larry, I have8 main different sets that I go through 30 times each. I do them while still in bed. Arms straight over my head up then brought downand back up, armsout to the side brought in meeting (I try to think I'm wrapping my arms around a beach ball), arms at my side bringing each one up to my chin, arms down brought up straight overhead (the reverse of set one so the breathe is let out on the opposite move, arms bent with hands at my chin then arms pushed out to the side and back in, arms straight out to the sidemaking circles, arms straight up overhead doing circles, arms in a bent position with a running movemen pump. Each move is made in time with a breath and with wrists cockedwhile I hold and relax. The longer I've worked on these moves I've found I'm able to work the muscles connected to the ones I can control (stomach, back, etc) and the faster I move the faster I breathe to keep my heart rate up. I wish t! his was clearer but if you're really interested I'm sure we can figure out a way to show you how each set is done. I hope this helps some. 2% zilocaine comes in a tooth paste tube and you will need an RX from your doctor. A tube should last a long time if used carefully. Appreciate your input. My psysiatrist better known as a rehab doc is at St. Johns hospital. His name is Martin Wice. He told me to avoid surgery for now, but the guy is an old schooler has no suggestions on much of anything but dealing with it. I was and still am pretty active. I swim, lift weights and wheel to stay in shape but this syrinx has really upset me. I ca only do about half as much as I did b4 syrinx. I keep thinking maybe my activity had something to do with syrinx formation but everybody says no. What meds are you on to combat the pain? Ron c7 7 yrs post
Re: [QUAD-L] Thanks Dan
Ron, My pain really got bad this year, I began taking elavil about 2 weeks agoI was on 1mg Lorazapam for years...I was going to see if I can still take both but you said you do, so i guess its ok. I also take vicadin or flexeril muscle relaxer on occasion. Since I began taking elavil I feel kinda out of it early in the mornings when I get up..does it seem to have that effect on you? Dr. Martin Wice is one of my doctors too... he is strict on pain meds...so I get some from family doctor. I'm in Maryland Heights Area...Where are you Ron ? I got hurt august 3rd 1997 car wreck . *Dan*
Re: [QUAD-L] Thanks Dan
Yo Dan, Ive been taking 1mg lorezapam twice a day, ten 25 mg elavil at night. i have noticed im kind of out of it in morning but I think its worth it. Neurontin didn't work for me at low doses anyway. Mixing them works fine no negative effects, docs gave approval. My general doc is John Obrien. Im from the St. Peters area, I used to go to Grace church in maryland heights. How long have u had syrinx so far? Ron
Re: [QUAD-L] Thanks Dan
yep I spent anout 12 years going to that church. the pastor there is my financial advisor. its a great place for support Ill tell you that, they all were there when I had my wreck and now even though I dont attend much they still are in contact with me. We need to keep in touch Dan we have almost identical medical situations, feels good to know someone is in same boat, I thought I was alone.. Ron, c7
Re: [QUAD-L] Thanks Dan
Ron do you by chance use a urologist named Doctor Perry Lovingood ? I see him and he said he treats another Quad named Ron ? He works out of like 6 different hospitals.including St. Johns-- Depaul and Christian Northeast. I am just curious because we both had Martin Wice as a rehab Doc. Thanks, Dan

Sorry for the late reply. Been away from the computer. It was my pleasure. It makes me sad sometimes seeing all the gimp stuff on ebay. I know some in our situations help make ends meet by selling stuff on ebay but I know there are able bodied people selling things that belonged to relatives that have passed away that could afford to just donate it.
