Re: [QUAD-L] I'm in a dilemma...Need help.

2007-06-21 Thread Quadius

It seems as if everybody has covered almost every thing I can think of, but
I would definitely not limit your search to male assistants. I am 6 foot 3
and currently weigh about 185 pounds, but I have in the past gone to 200. I
have had female caregivers from 90 pounds on a do my care with no problem.
I use a Hoyer lift and just recently got an electronic one, because the
transfer from the Hoyer to the chair seems to be the most complicated for
new caregivers to learn.

I will definitely be checking out some of these lifts myself, but I would
exhaust everything before you have to go into a home.

Also, respite is a must. I haven't given my brother and sister-in-law, my
caregivers any substantial time off in three years and I am going in for
respite when I get my colonoscopy done in late July. I will end up spending
two weeks to give them a break and even though I hate it in there, it is
invaluable for PCAs to get time off for recuperation every now and then.

Good luck. Your situation breaks my heart and there are just so many people
out there in similar circumstances I believe it is criminal.

Keith,

You did not go into a lot of detail but I'm only going to assume that you
need help in the lifting department. All you need to do is purchase an
electric lift like a "Sure Hands" with a toileting sling. I have this set up
and
the most physical thing that my caregivers do is roll me from one side to the
next to put my pants on. If they have trouble doing that, I use a different
sling under my arms once I am in my wheelchair to lift me up enough so they
can slide my pants up. I have had girls that weighed around 100 pounds that
can take care of me with no problem whatsoever.

We just needed to transfer me in and out of bed to and from the
chair, that's why we went with the voyager/easy track. It was cheaper
than a ceiling mounted lift and setup in about 20 mins.

Portable Voyager Lift $1937
Easy Track Three Post System $1495

The local rep brought one to my house to try it and left it. We were
going to pay for it (taking a home equitty loan) then my state case
manager said the state might be able to. We were using it for almost
a year before it was paid.

I agree with Dan, an overhead is the best to get. I have the Portable
Voyager Lift with the Easy Track Three Post System. We use it to
transfer between my chair and bed. Since the lift itself is light
weight and portable you can put the tracks where you want them and
just move the lift from room to room. My mom uses it by herself to
transfer me. We could do the Hoyer lift with one person.

http://www.planetmobility.com/store/paitentlifts/bhm/

I was able to get the state (WA) to pay for mine. It took about 8
months but they did finally pay for it.

Keith,

If you can't find a male aide, have you thought about a lifting device like
a hoyer lift to assist your aide with your transfer? It might be a good idea
to keep one around anyways.

Hi Michael,

The hoyer lift is one thing I'm checking into, but another problem is the
state of NJ is only allowing me 21 hours total a week. That's just three hours
a
day for both morning and night.
