Re: [Quantum Owners] which way does the engine come out?
I don't fancy a car on axle stands that high !! When i was building mine i had it on 4 stands like that (but lower) and when i fitted the engine it was actually heavy enough to start lifting the empty rear of the car. I had to put a couple of wheels and tyres in the boot to keep it balanced. I do it with an engine crane. Put the car up on normal axle stands at the front, leave the rear on the ground. Undo everything needed to be undone. Support the engine weight on the crane and undo the engine mounts. Lower the engine to the ground, or onto a lower trolley makes things easier. Transfer the engine crane to the front of subframe and use it to lift the car high enough to pull the engine out the front. Reverse for reassembly. Re: [Quantum Owners] Re: which way does the engine come out?
I don't think so, the end cover on the gearbox sticks out further below the chassis rail. Maybe if the engine bay was completely empty and you can turn the engine at an angle. Strictly speaking the height of garage needed to get the engine out from above should be the same as that from below, you still need the same clearance between the 2 parts. I've done it in a single garage with a engine hoist (not crane) attached to a 6x2 wood beam on the garage roof. Re: [Quantum Owners] Re: Track Control Arms on 2+2 now coupe steering
The steering rack for the coupe as per the build manual was the standard Fiesta rack rather than the XR2 this was because the XR2 was fitted with restrictors. The effect of the wrong rack on my coupe was to make three point turns into 5 or even 7 point turns and doing a U turn around a mini roundabout was not always possible Using wider wheels than standard might make it essential to use a rack that has restrictors to prevent the tyres rubbing but the resulting increase in the turning circle diameter can be a real nuisance. [Quantum Owners] Re: which way does the engine come out?
You'd have to tilt it a long way to get it past the battery tray, though you could probably do it with the tray removed - unfortunately it's welded in, and quite severely, too! http://i156.photobucket.com/albums/t31/nailed_barnacle/Quantum%20engine/P7030088.jpg With an engine hoist and a two-post lift it's a doddle - the crane takes the strain and lowers to a trolley, the lift takes the frame away, then the trolley pulls out. You need to lift something like two feet to clear the engine and trolley. Re: [Quantum Owners] which way does the engine come out?
Yeah, the centre of gravity is quite far forward and there was a few trial lifts with the forklift before getting it stable but it was no problem on the stands (I did have the boot full of stuff as well though just to be extra safe). Its actually a lot easier on the Q than it was on the XR2 due to the front body work coming off - the XR2 front was pretty low with the front bumper/spoiler on. Everyone has their own way of doing it and as long as its safe thats fine.
