These batteries are very expensive, might even cost a couple of quid ;-)
Open the PC look for a watch battery and that is the one.

[Quantum Owners] Re: Pre registration insurance cover

2011-11-06 Thread Andrew
Hi Luke,

Lots of good responses already, but here is my experience anyway...

Trailered to first IVA, Failed ! ( 1 year ago )

FJ at that time allowed 4 weeks on a VIN, this expired, and the length
was reduced to 2 weeks. I then drove to my local garage with no plates
etc, but paperwork AND an appointment (must be pre booked). 2 weeks
expired, spoke too FJ, who were not flexible. so I basically restarted
the insurance for 2 weeks a day before the next IVA test, which I
drove too. - No issues with the authorities. Did feel a bit odd on
the M1 with no plates etc
(I think I paid FJ a £15 fee each time the ins was restarted)

Also I had no screen, so borrowed a motorcycle helmet and had
waterproof clothes and a towel Bit of rain, but all ok..once in
the IVA shed !

The issue for me was trailering to the DVLA after passing, as you
cannot drive it once home after a pass. This cost me (borrowed car
with towbar), £50 for 1/2 day trailer rental.. Last year they were
not happy with the VOSA info, but 'some' DVLA branches have
historically come out to you.

Reality is it is a pain in the proverbial

[Quantum Owners] Re: Brakes

2011-11-06 Thread TonyV
Sorry, I wouldn't know how to test for brake fluid contamination,
short of taking a sample to a lab which is likely to be prohibitively
expensive.
Might be worth inquiring if there has been any recent work to the
brakes though.

My suggestion would be to completely drain the system, flush through
thoroughly with the correct fluid, and then re-fit the new master
cylinder.
It's not a bad idea to replace your brake fluid every few years
anyway. Brake fluid will absorb water from the atmosphere, which
collects in the system and can cause corrosion.

On the AX, we did this, and then changed both rear wheel cylinders,
and put new seals in the front calipers.
They would probably have failed sooner or later anyway, due to the
contamination affecting the seals.

But working from an unknown history? Tricky.

One other thing I can think of. Some cars (not sure whether this
applies to the Fiesta/Quantum) have a tiny vent hole in the brake
fluid cap.
This is to allow air into the master cylinder, to replace the fluid
displaced from the reservoir when the pedal is pushed.
(The air gets pushed back out again when the pedal is released and
fluid returns to the reservoir - air shouldn't get into the system
this way).
If the vent hole is blocked, it's possible a slight vacuum in the
reservoir might prevent fluid getting into the master cylinder
properly.
This could cause symptoms like those you're seeing.
I can't remember how the Fiesta cap vents, but if it's been fitted
with an aftermarket "fashion" cap, or pattern master cylinder, it may
be missing the vent.

TonyV.

Possible use of wrong brake fluid, recently or at some point in the
past?

For example, even a trace of Citroen brake fluid in the system could
cause eventual MC seal failure.

We found this out the hard way, after we had to change the master
cylinder in Louise's old AX several times in a couple of weeks.
Turns out the Citroen AX doesn't use Citroen brake fluid.
We'd bought a bottle of fluid at the same time as the new Master
Cylinder, and recommended by the motor factors.
The can of brake fluid just said "suitable for most Citroens" - no
actual application list, so we'd taken his word (and catalogue lookup)
that it was the right one.

Michael, thanks for you comments, but for someone to be able to drive

insured in its own right - otherwise its illegal.

I have had confirmation from VOSA that you can drive your car to the
test station with no registration, but you must have insurance to do
this. Likewise, to attend local garages for remedial works you must
 have insurance in place.

Air in the system would tend to get worse and worse rather than change
randomly.
It could be the servo on the way out, if diaphram has split it can seal
sometimes better than others and cause variations in braking pressure.

If it is air in the system then i can be getting in due to a fault in
one of the wheel cylinders, the seals can fail in such a way that they
suck air in when the pedal is released but they still don't let fluid
out when the pedal is pressed.

I really want to get some new seats for my quantum turbo coupe

and am genuinely considering buying them because my recaro

Subject: [Quantum Owners] Seats

Hi everyone
I really want to get some new seats for my quantum turbo coupe on a
1.6 fiesta rs. I have seen some nice bucket seats that recline on ebay
and am genuinely considering buying them because my recaro seats are
not in a good condition. My only issue is, is what to do with the rear
seats? as soon as i put some nice new leather seats in the front the
back will look very outdated. Does anyone know some nice rear leather
seats or can advise me on what to do? not a big fan of seat covers but
would consider an upholstery.
Thanks in advance
Shaun McSorley

2011-11-06 Thread jon jackson
Ha ha my two passions are cars and angling and both attract bull merchants.
The guys I bought it from claimed 245bhp LOL, I would say its about 165 bhp
which is plenty for me.
One of the great sayings is "when the flag drops the bull stops", so
true.
I have just driven a Lancer EVO Mk9 with over 300 bhp so know what real
grunt is like (however my Quant is a bag of fun). I have a track day at
Goodwood on 21st and am in a quandry as to using my track prepped Dolly
Sprint or the Quant, both will get round in respectable times.

@Jon, what country do you live in?

This is mine, as mentioned standard XR2 springs on an early 2+2 with gaz
adjustable dampers

https://picasaweb.google.com/wastell.eu/QuantumKitCar?authuser=0&feat=directlink

To give an idea of the height clearance, you can get about 1½ fingers
between the top of the tyre and the wheel arch.

No problem driving on roads in UK, a bit stiff for some people's liking,
but if it was their car they can turn the dampers down.

Re: [Quantum Owners] Re: Pre registration insurance cover

2011-11-06 Thread Matthew Wastell
It covers any vehicle you are responsible for including your own fleet. You
have to notify the ins company a list of registration numbers at the end of the
year. I'm not aTrader but have driven on trade plates and also have had two
friends in the business (one of who told me that at the end of the year he
collects low value reg numbers by observing passing traffic - his idea was if
the majority were cheap ford escorts or whatever it would balance out the
premium cars for his next year renewal premiums!)

I also had a friend who used trade insurance instead of regular insurance as he
could not get his lotus Carlton insured by any regular policy. The only issue
with this is any payout is trade price only.

I did a load of reding yesterday and there is a good thread on Piston heads
about 3rd party extension. As I understand it unless your policy states there
should be a cover by owner, then it is fine to 'use' an uninsured vehicle on
3rd party extension. Included a post from one of the resident police saying
he'd stopped and checked a guy recently - he called the persons ins co directly
to verify. Stopping for fuel etc is considered in use so the vehicle is still
covered. The only issues are with taxation / sorn and if they will require
continuous insurance.

All above is from 3rd party sources only. I have not validated this and or read
any statute or case law.

[Quantum Owners] MK3 Cam tensioner needed

2011-11-06 Thread steve c
Hi
The timing belt tensioner on my 2+2, fitted with a 1.8i DOHC engine
has disintegrated. I've therefore looking for a replacement if any one
has one, or any help with souring one (suppliers, other cars/engines
with same tensioner)
I'll try and get a picture and upload it for reference.
Cheers
StevieCee

[Quantum Owners] Re: More Parts.

2011-11-06 Thread steve c
HI Jim
Quick update, Adam was out in the Car last week, and when he got of
the motorway, he ealised it was making a horrible noise...
aended up geting it recovered, and the upshot is that investigation
has shown the timing belt tensioner has disintegrated. I've basically
got the out and ineer, but no bearings!
So the work to sort out the gearbox/diff/driveshat/suspension problems
is on hold. Clearly I'm facing a strong possibility of bent valves,
damaged pistons etc, so it may be that the engine and box come out,
and I look into the other problems then.
I'm going to start a different thread with an appeal for a MK3
tensioner - an to which cars/engines use the same one that you're
aware of would be welcome as usual.
Thanks
StevieCee
