[qubes-users] 4.0rc3 Install w/ NVIDIA

2017-12-28 Thread blake . sansom
Hi all. I just installed rc3 on my Alienware 15 R3. Everything seemed to go
okay, but when I rebooted following install, after Bios I just got a black
screen with a blinking cursor. I tried putting in my LUKS pw since I read that
possibly the prompt just wasn’t showing but no go. I also tried 3.2 and got
the same result. This laptop looks pretty good on the HCL, but my version is
running a G-Sync display, so my understanding is the integrated graphics are
completely unavailable and everything goes thru my NVIDIA 1060.

Any suggestions? I’ve read the Qubes NVIDIA support but this problem seems a
bit different than the scenarios described there.

This is another common error I found (many times) over the weeks on

You need two sticks per CPU for dual channel, four per CPU for quad

4U always is recommended as you can use larger fans, with decent fans
and running fancontrol or the OpenBMC firmware on the KCMA-D8 and
KGPE-D16 they are almost silent and one can watch a film without complaint.

Thx for the tip, I'll opt for OpenBMC in that case.
If you want this make sure your vendor is selling your the KGPE-D16 with
the ASMB module so you don't have to buy it later, it should say it in
the SKU title.

You might want to try Fedora 26. I just learned 25 is End Of Life already!

Its nice though that you trust your usb keyboard cause it was made in a free
western country. What country is that again? If you say the USA i'll have
to start laughing... Especially since you like to mention the CIA.

And you still haven't explained exactly what is done with the ground wire? How
is information obtained, or how is it used to take over your pc? Enlighten us
all, because I can't even find the common sense. It seems you aren't speaking
from any real life or personal experience or even suspicions. If i'm wrong
i'd like to know why you think so, without the name calling please, we could
all benefit.

If someone has government hitmen trying to kill them, the last thing they
should be doing is using a computer or going online. That would be my advice.
I wouldn't be trying to sell them hardware. How do we know you are not a
government spy? :)

Are you stalking me from some crazy libre land?

I use an nvidia 650 ti with Qubes and never had issues. Its better then the
intel integrated on another newer board I use. Meaning desktop effects and
smoother performance and colors look better. But thats all subjective I guess.

I suggested getting a board with intel integrated because there is indeed less
chance for incompatibility. A good rule of thumb, in general, is if its newer
then 2 years there is a chance for problems with linux, no matter the hardware.
Most drivers are made for windows first. And linux lags slowly behind with
support. Especially with hardware that is not very popular.

I wonder if mining would be worth it on Qubes since it would eat resources that
could be otherwise allocated. I also wouldn't use my Qubes machine as a server
or for gaming, I consider these also defeating the purpose of security. My
Qubes machine is simply a workstation for daily or sensitive tasks and
transactions.

Well, I tried to reinstall the qubes win tools several times. Maybe there is a
bug in the new version of the qubes video driver. But I don't know how to
obtain a previous version of qubes tools to test using a previous version of
the qubes video driver.
About reinstalling Windows over a clone of my previous VM. I tried, but
unfortunately Windows doesn't allow to install a Windows Home version over a
Windows Ultimate.

The developers are working on a 3.2.1 build with some updated installer

SOLVED: Downgraded WPA_SUPPLICANT to version 2.5 (from 2.6). It seems to be a
Fedora 25 issue.

2017-12-28 Thread Edk
I have checked the driver versions on Fedora-23 and Fedora-25, they are the
same: v4.1.4_6773.20130222

Could this be a Fedora-25 issue?

I do not get it work on sys-usb: Starting NetworkManager and nm-applet works,
but the Network Interface doesn't Show up in ifconfig. Device reaction is the
same: blinking LED.

I have followed this instructions, so the passthrough should work:

But I don't know, why I expect problems.

I had to add the option "modprobe.blacklist=nouveau" to the kernel
boot line in xen.cfg.

(I ended up binary editing the iso file before writing it to a usb
stick. I think there is an easier way, but I couldn't figure it out).

Not sure you can use USB pass-through like that, but I don't have USB
wifi. What if you cancel the pass-through, enable the "NetworkManager"
service on sys-usb, then use that as your NetVM?

Are you sure the qubes tools are installed correctly in the new HVM? I
remember it took me a few tries. Also, what happens if you clone the old
one instead of building new? If the clone works, you could try
reinstalling Windows Home inside it and see what happens.

Re: [qubes-users] Re: new Desktop build recommendation

2017-12-28 Thread Marco Silva
Sorry man, I have to be a bit blunt here, while using google search is cool it
gives you no real understanding of hardware, My cpu's are E5-2667 V2 these are
ivy-bridge architecture 22NM 4GHZ 8 cores/16 threads. Not the ones you linked
(E5-2667 - Sandy bridge - 32NM 6 cores/12 threads) for starters Passmark is
really poor benchmarking resource, and even in that site that lousy AMD is
10748 vs 10392 for the Intel six core cpu...imagine how bad it is really that
cpu performance for desktop use...16 cores with same ipc of a raspberry pi :)
They aren't even 16 cores it is 8 modules of 2 cores that share resources like
FPU.
