Re: QWS List Braille music notation

2021-09-11 Thread JAMES BOWDEN

Hi Brian,

For the basics, you might be interested in a podcast I did for the
Braillists, available at www.braillists.org/media

Guitar chords and lead sheets are easy, they're almost basically
ordinary braille.

Here are a few examples:

D (major, ordinary chord): dot 6, D

Em (E minor): Dot 6, E, M.
A7 (A dominant seventh): Dot 6, A, Dot 3456, 7.

So that will cover most things...

Now let's try:
F#m7 (F sharp minor seventh): Dot 6, F, SH sign, M, dots 3456, 7.

Sus4 and maj7 are written as you would expect.
Sharp, as we've seen is the SH sign and flat is the GH sign.

Brackets will be the single-cell lower G sign.

Chord symbols generally line up with the note they apply to, but this
may not always be possible if you have two or three chords in a bar.

There's more information in the music reference books:
The New International Manual of Braille Music Notation, (Krolick, 1996),
or

Music Braille Notation 2015 (BANA, 2015)

You can find them on braille authority websites, such as
www.brailleauthority.org, or www.ukaaf.org

I trust this helps, but if you need any furhte rinfo, please feel free
to write direct.

God bless,

James.

Hi Joe,

It's good to hear from you.

Yes, most media players will play MIDI files, but be warned they may
route the data to the built-in Microsoft synth by default.

Yes, you can make QWS the default program for MIDI files. You can do
this either through the Windows file associations (Default Programs)
function, or I think you can use the context menu (Shift + F10 in File
Explorer and choose Open With, then Other Application, and tick the box
that says always to use this program.

Or, if you prefer, you can run QWS with the /r command line parameter
(that last method is in the QWS manual). R stands for "register". So at
the Run dialog, type

"c:\program files (x86)\qws\qws.exe" /r

(or whever you installed QWS. Notice the quotes, the /r is deliberately
not in the quoted bit.

Hello, List Members,    First I wanted to thank you all while I
struggled through problems with my Medeli keyboard. Then there was time
spent trying to help make QWS work with virtual instruments.

It ended up that my Triton rack was retulrned me. I set it up with a USB
to MIDI box. I was able to go through various instruments and hear them.
After 20 minutes or so, the Triton quit operating as it should.

Well, it's been repaired. The service shop even updated the firmware,
and that's the trouble. To make this synthesizer work properly, it must
have the map set to Korg and not MIDI. I don't know how to do that.

Once that is done, maybe all will be right.

Is there a way to play MIDI files without QWS? If there's no way, is
there a way to make QWS be the default program for playing MIDIs? I
thought there was a way but couldn't find it in the manual.

Thank you.

Hi Joe,

As Simon has said, MIDI Yoke appears not to work on Windows 10. I can

I use Loop MIDI and it is working well for me. Please try it.

The article on using VST Instruments with QWS, and the tutorial on VST,

The only thing left to try is uninstalling the program completely, then
reinstalling. I'm guessing it won't work though. LoopMIDI is free and I
can confirm it does work up to latest Windows 10: If anyone else is
using similar software, it would be interesting to know.

The only problem I've seen with this particular one is that it seems to
somehow conflict with CoolSoft virtual MIDI synth, so if you use this
software to run soundfonts you might find that only one of them can run
at a time.

One way you can run the installer without a UAC prompt is to go to the

grant the program administrative rights before it asks for them, which
will prevent it from doing so at all. If anything is going to stop the

Re: RE: QWS List QWS suddenly refuses to start

2021-07-10 Thread JAMES BOWDEN

Hi Richard,

I have no idea why QWS will automatically close. I cannot think of
anything that would make the behaviour change if you don't have a config
file either.

The most likely possibility is some conflict with a MIDI port. So try in
the Ports dialog turning everything off and then restarting. You'll
probably get a message that there are no available MIDI ports.

Then go back in and turn one port on and continue restarting.

That's again, just a guess.

Just as a side issue, I assume you are aware what Windows does with
locating INI files nowadays if you install a program in "C:\Program
files (x86)" etc? They may be "virtualised", that is, moved to your user
profile folder under Appdata.

I hope this helps.

God bless,

James.

Patience. QWS isn't abandoned. James has just been focused on something
else for a bit. He's got a long list of suggestions for improvements. (I
know, I wrote several of them from experiences with other sequencers and
regular use over time) But it's a one person shop.

What would help is as much information as possible about what's
happening. I prefer to let those having the problem ask elsewhere
because they know what's going on with their system and the problem and
they can implement fixes suggested far faster than I can. So it'd be
good for someone having this problem to go to one of the What's App
groups or the Midimag lists to ask there.

And though some programs can run into snags with later operating
systems, that's not always the case. For example, Cardfile, a Windows
3.1 accessory, still runs on Windows 7 and I suspect will still run on
Windows 10. Hammerhead, a beats creation program, also still runs fine
too. It's not a universal truth that legacy software is always
abandonware.

It's painfully obvious that QWS is getting old. And, newer versions of
Windows don't like old software very much!

Since QWS is not actively maintained. I guess its time to find a new
music/MIDI creation software. But! REAPER is not the answer because it
is too complicated to use. And, there is no real good simple alternative
to QWS to be found!

It's very sad to see a good piece of software grow long in the tooth!

Developers of open source software have the very bad habit of falling

Sorry this is not helpful at all. But, maybe, at some point someone who

You can get a plug-in now that solves the sound font issue to some
degree on the Mac. It’s called Juicy SF plug-in, end it runs in VST and
AU format.  There are some slight bugs with it, as it is a new plug-in;
for example, it doesn’t quite handle cut off, resonance, and ADSR
messages properly, but it uses the same engine as Synth Font, and it
gets the job done when you need it.  There is a slight accessibility
problem, but I found out that by going to the far side of the plug-in
window moving my mouse down slightly and clicking, I am able to load
sound fonts; once I’ve done that, I save them as Logic presets.  I have
copies of this plug-in installer for Mac and windows if anybody is
interested, as the website is a bit goofy to navigate.

I relate to this entire e-mail in a serious way. I think one of the
reasons I stopped composing so much was because I bought into the Logic
/ Reaper / Komplete / fancypants newfangled musical stuff™ scene. And it
has its place; Komplete is seriously amazing. But I still fly around QWS
and hesitantly walk around Reaper (at least for MIDI editing). One thing
you can do is define QWS as an external editor for MIDI files and have
it use a loopback device routed to Reaper by default. In conjunction
with the setting that automatically arms tracks as you select them, you
could then have QWS send the output back into Reaper automatically, so
you kind of get the best of both worlds. I think the only disadvantage
to this method is that tempo information doesn't get included in MIDI
takes. And speaking of takes, the default ctrl+e action in Reaper is to
open a *copy* of an item in the external editor, so once you save that
item and close QWS, you'll have a second take in Reaper. It's like
version control for your music. I've only just started to play with this
as an option for MIDI editing, so I may make other good or bad
discoveries along the way.

I don't have Komplete, but I still use Reaper a lot. What I do these

Reaper's learning curve a bit. I still use QWS to sequence with vsts.

Re: QWS List ports problem revisited

2021-05-01 Thread JAMES BOWDEN

Hi Joe,

Sorry for the delay responding to your questions.

First, about opening MIDI ports: QWS uses the standard Windows functions
to open the MIDI devices. Windows is reporting an error when QWS tries
opening your keyboard port. Unfortunately, there is very little that can
be done by QWS.

Regarding the save location of files: if you try and save to the
installation directory of QWS, Windows is likely to "virtualise" the
folder. This is because normally you aren't supposed to write to
c:\program files (x86). So instead, Windows creates an equivalent folder
from your Windows profile folder, under c:\users\\... (as
you say, buried deep).

Your best option is to make sure you know where you store all your
files, make sure that you choose a folder of your choice, not the
computer's choice.

I hope this helps and sorry I cannot give you a good answer about the
MIDI port problem.

God bless,

James.

Hmmm, how strange.

What kind of keyboard do you have? If it’s one that requires you to

I know this may be because of my long history with MIDI, but I don't
know that  a 2.0 version of the specification will saturate much into
the industry. MIDI as it exists right now has a couple of major
advantages. First off, it's documented very well in its various flavors.
Second, everything, and by everything I mean every single element of the
specification, is optional. That's a lot of flexibility there.

Also remember that the MMA can do anything they want to in updating or
rolling out new versions of the MIDI specification, but someone has to
implement it, and that means both sides -- James would have to make QWS
MIDI 2.x compatible, and there'd have to be hardware that used it too.
Given the current retro craze I'm finding it a bit hard to expect both
of those things to come together at once.

I seriously doubt James is done with QWS, but he has said a couple of
times here he's working on other stuff and will get back to QWS soon
enough.

Hi folks,

Good to hear there is interest in new versions of QWS.

As has been said, I have been very busy with other kinds of projects and
program development work has had to take a back seat.

To complicate matters at the moment yu may remember we are in what they
call a pandemic. What has that got to do with developing programs?
Actually a lot at the moment as I am not in my usual location, without
access to my usual computer, so absolutely no development work will be
happening for the foreseeable future, especially as we are in lock-down
in the UK at the moment. I don't have a compiler here nor the source
code with me.

Sorry folks. Suggestions are welcome, but they have to wait even to get
on the list, because that's on the other computer, too.

God bless,

James.

QWS List Website updates

2020-11-14 Thread JAMES BOWDEN

Hi everyone,

I trust you are all well, especially in these interesting times.

I have finally managed to update the QWS website. Yes, I know it's been
ages since the last update.

There are some new instrument lists - many thanks to all those who
supplied them, and thank you for being so patient with me for so long.

There's also an audio tutorial for usingQWS with VST instruments.

Enjoy.

God bless,

James.

Re: QWS List finding your midi files

2020-10-27 Thread JAMES BOWDEN

Hi David,

May I ask, did you install QWS to the default folder of c:\program files
(x86)\qws?

If so, then the behaviour you report is perfectly "normal" according to
Windows.

The reason this is happening is because you are normally not allowed to
write to the program files folders.

So, Windows has "virtualised" the save operation.
You can probably find the files you have saved in your User Profile.

So, it will be something along the lines:

c:\users\
\
app data\
local\ **
VirtualStore\
program files (x86)\
qws
(exclamation)

** might be LocalLo or Roaming, but probably Local.

That's a great tip from Nicole about getting around this huge long
pathname!

I trust this helps.

God bless,

James.

I can create midi files in QWS and save them to the QWS directory and I
see

all of my midi files while I'm in the Save or Save As dialog.

Thing is, when I traverse through Windows 10 "This" and find the QWS

My intent is to back up those files but I can't find a way to view the

Any suggestions?

Re: QWS List SV: SV: SV: Questions About Roland SysEx Messages, and Using Multiple Hardware Devices

2020-02-10 Thread JAMES BOWDEN
Hi Gavin,

In my limited experience with R manuals, the PDF files are, like you say, not
at all great to navigate. The problem is you have two columns of text and the
screen reader merges them together, reading right across the line.

It took me ages demultiplexing them in a word processor to make them make sense
... and the charts typically go on for pages.

No shortcut, sorry.

The good news though is once you've got the basic idea, you can begin to tweak
all kinds of things.

Like Brian said, if you want to send GS reset to one synth and XG reset to
another, then use a separate cable, as they probably respond to both otherwise.
Those messages are NOT exclusive to just the one synth.

Hope this helps.

God bless,

James.

There are various solutions, but the cheapest I know of probably is to get

RE: QWS List AW: Hello to the list

2019-10-19 Thread JAMES BOWDEN
Hi,

In my experience of Roland gear, no special handshake is needed: just send the
message and the synth accepts it.

The interesting thing about the messages is the "checksum" at the end of the
messages. This is true for the JV series, XV series and Fantom series of synths
- I do not know about others.

My setup, for interest:

* Korg X5 synth - which I mainly use as a controller now.
* Roland Fantom XR, my main hardware synth

* I also have Native Instruments Komplete as a software synth.

Hope this helps.

I'll deal with handshaking first. Roland devices ping the sysex source on a
regular basis and they won't send or receive anything until their ping is
answered. So it goes like this:
You start to send a system exclusive message.
The Roland device sends back a query.
Your device responds to that query.
This happens multiple times in a system exclusive transaction. They see this as
a feature, not a bug, but it does mean that data transfers to/from Roland
devices need to be done using a patch editor and or librarian. So far I haven't
found an accessible one of those.
My studio has been mothballed since December of 2009. I need a 1.5-2 car
garage, enclosed and finished out, to have enough room for everything. (drums,
sound gear, mixers, etc.) I'll limit this to MIDI gear since that's the topic
of conversation, or those things I'm looking to get MIDI connected in the
future. This is by port, so I can keep things straight in my mind.
Port 1: Oberheim Matrix 6r, Roland MT-32, 2 Yamaha TX802s, Sequential Prophet
T8, Moog The Source, Oberheim OB3
Port 2: E-mu Proteus 1, 4 Kurzweil 1000gx modules, Alesis D4
Port 3: 2 Ensoniq EEPSMs
Port 4: Oberheim Matrix 1000, Roland D-110, Ensoniq MR Rack
Port 5: 4 Kurzweil Pro1s, Kurzweil K1000 SE MkII Extended, fully upgraded to a
Pro76, 4 Kurzweil Pro2s
Port 6: Novation A-Station, Novation Bass Station, Yamaha DX7IIFD, Alesis DM
Pro, Proteus 1XR, and Korg Wavestation SR.
Port 7: All the FX gear in the audio FX rack.
Port 8: Roland JV-1080, Korg M1, room for expansion
Port 9: Kurzweil K2600EX
Controllers: Kurzweil k2600EX and K1000 SE MkII Extended, Sequential Prophet
T8, Korg M1, and M-Audio Axiom-61. Two guitar controllers will also be added to
the mix soon so I can stop having to simulate strums and chords on a keyboard.
This is a static environment when it's up and running -- I don't change patches
in the machines, instead relying on the "brute force approach" Rick Wakeman
used to have the sounds I want to use on hand. The rig makes sense to me, but
probably would be confusing to most other people at first, as it evolved from
one port to two and then four and then eight. Since the rig has been mothballed
I've used software to get as much of the same sounds as possible. I'm missing
the Oberheim stuff and several others, but the goal is to get as much simulated
as possible so I don't have to carry a rack with me when performing live. I
still want the studio up and running again though, as software doesn't have all
those output stages that are designed to make the synthesis/sample playback
engine sound the best it can, and there's something awe inspiring when you hear
about 80 rack spaces of gear playing for you.

thank you first for the detailed and friendly answers and the warm welcome. I

Advantages Hardware has and I haven’t to use the PC every time I want to make
Music.

At the Moment I own the Roland BK-5, the Yamaha genos and a few Little synths,
the bigger ones are the Korg microkorg and the arturia Minibrute 2. I like the
Volca series and the Monotrons as well for what they are. What I realy like
About smaller synths is that they are often underrated in the Things they can
do. I still have some Mixers and FX boxes but I can’t exactly remember the
Models at the Moment. I luckily had the opportunity to have a room wich was
unused in my flat so I began to make a home Studio out of it.

I realy like this Hobby, since Music and experementing with sounds is simply
fun and realy interesting.

What is your Setup guys? I am open for recomendations regarding synths and such
wich can be used as a blind Person, since from time to time i buy some new or
other devices if affordable.

But in General, I don’t make Music as a Profession, it is a fun and interesting
Hobby to me and so I don’t have to take it too serious and the best is, I can
do and produce what I like,

QWS, like almost all other programs, effectively says to Windows "Hey, I need a

Hi Matt,

In common with most other Windows applications, the File Open dialog and File
Save As dialogs are entirely controlled by Windows. They are what is known as
Common Dialogs.

So basically, what appears in the dialog is entirely up to Windows.

There is little I can do for this one, sorry. The symptom you are experiencing
may be to do with a Windows update - or update in progress.

You could also try Alt+Tab away and back again, to see if that makes any
difference.

Sorry there's not much I can advise on this.

RE: QWS List QWS Development?

2019-05-06 Thread JAMES BOWDEN
Hi,

Thank you, Nicole for your kind words.

Nicole is right, I have not done recent development work on QWS, but there have
been a whole host of reasons for this, not least, a small matter of writing two
recorder concertos, which has claimed a lot of time. Before that, small matters
like dying computers and moving home and changing job.

So I hope you still find that QWS works fine under Windows 10 and when I have
motivation, inspiration and time (all at the same time) I hope to continue
development.

Nicole is right, I do have a list of requested features. I cannot promise to
complete them, but at least they are noted and will help to decide how to
develop things further.

I trust this helps.

Depends on your definition of "active". James is a one person development,
coding, testing, and deployment team and QWS isn't and can't be his primary
focus, as it's pretty much freeware. He puts out updates from time to time, and
he's got a reputedly vast list of feature suggestions. (I know he's gotten a
decent list from me, at the very least)
I agree that it's one of the both simplest and also the most detailed ways to

So I figured it out, with a little help.

The small delay is because of the bank/ data messages, being sent, as
the same time the note is trying to play.

Now, how would you leave the bank info at bar 1, but have all the notes
play at bar 2?

Re: QWS List Playback delay, and midi files?

2019-03-15 Thread JAMES BOWDEN
Hi Matt,

The answer is no, the cut off notes is not because you have recorded using a
playback delay in QWS.

The QWS setting for playback delay means that QWS will send all the initial
track settings, then wait a little and only then start the playback proper. The
idea is that some synths - like yours and mine - take a little time to process
things like program changes, typically setting up the effects processors.

No additional data is saved or altered in the MIDI file because of the Playback
Delay setting.

So, for example, if you set the Playback Delay to 0 in QWS, I reckon you will
probably have exactly the same problem as you're experiencing playing your
files in in Reaper.

The solution to your problem is to insert some blank beats at the beginning of
each track, to give that time that your synth needs to process, before the
first notes are sent.

I trust this helps.

God bless,

James.

Trying to move over to reaper.

So, all of the midi files I've recorded with my MOXF keyboard, the
playback delay was set to 400.

When putting these midi files in to reaper, there's a chopping at the
beginning of the sound.

Just wondering if recording with the playback delay set at 400 could
have  anything to do with this?

Note, I'm using my MOXF keyboard in reaper, to trigger the same sounds.

Re: QWS List Windows 10

2019-03-03 Thread JAMES BOWDEN
Hi,

Sorry, I have never used Reaper. I understand you can use it with QWS but I
have never tried it.

The general process for using a VST with QWS is described in the article on the
QWS website about using VST instruments.

You need:

* QWS
* VST Host
* A virtual MIDI cable.

The virtual MIDI cable I used until Windows 10 was called MIDI Yoke. For
Windows 10 I use LoopBe.

Then, in QWS, go to your Options Ports and make sure the virtual ports are
listed. If they are, make sure to disable the Input virtual ports - otherwise
you'll get feedback.

Next, you need to configure VST Host. Instructions are in the article, but
menus may vary depending on the precise version of VST Host. Make sure that the
audio destination is right and the MIDI input is right.

Then you need to load the VST into VST Host, use the File menu as usual.

You then need to set up the MIDI input for the VST, if I remember, in one of
the other menus you can set the MIDI source etc.

If you have chosen a VST which you have to configure then good luck because
many are not accessible. I cannot describe how you should load something within
the VST, because there are so many and they're all different, and many are not
accessible. However, some VST instruments simulate a particular synth and don't
need configuring - others can be configured with data files. Again, I cannot
give any detail about the actual VST instrument.

Hopefully, with all the connections made, you're good to go.

You can save the configuration in VSTHost, so you can quickly load everything
again next time.

I hope this helps.

With best regards,

James.

Re: QWS List pauses betwen settings?

Hi Ales,

Many thanks for your email and apologies for the delay responding.

You can move events in several ways. In your case, because the two events are
only one tick apart, I suggest you use the Event List and adjust the Start
time.

Another way could be to insert a whole beat at the beginning of your track, and
then use the Event List to move the Start time of the System Exclusive message
back to where it was.

Please consult the documentation for details of using the Event List, but S
adjusts the start time of the selected event.

I don't know the answer to your question specifically about your keyboard. I
can only suggest to consult the manual, or a relevant forum for your keyboard.

I hope this is some help.

God bless,

James.

So, please may I ask you to consult the manual for your keyboard to find out
the command it needs. It may be a System Exclusive Message. By nature, System
Exclusive messages are unique to your particular keyboard.

Alternatively - and this is what I have found much easier - memorise the button
sequence to turn the setting on and off, using the buttons on the front panel
of the keyboard. Again, sorry, details in your keyboard's manual.

I'm sorry I cannot give more direct help with this problem.

With best wishes for a happy Christmas and peaceful New Year.

God bless,

James.

Hi!

Problem with Local on and local off continues in arranger workstations
from Yamaha. I use USB. It looks, that this function doesn't work with
those keyboards in QWS. I have skipped It using midi thru, but this is
not very good. I would like to use this local function.

Please, could You look on this problem?

RE: QWS List Making instrument list

2018-11-10 Thread JAMES BOWDEN
Hello Ales,

Remember, in your manual it will show:

Program, Bank, Name.

In the QWS instrument lists, there is an additional column first: the channel.

-1 for the channel means, any channel.

You might find in the manual that it splits the bank into LSB and MSB values.
combine these together into a single bank value:

bank = MSB * 128 + LSB

I hope this helps.

God bless,

James.

Hello Ales,

Please note, I have changed the email subject.

To make an instrument list:

First, you will need the manual for your keyboard with the data. This is the
source of the information. You should be able to download this from the
internet if you do not already have the manual.

As you are looking at presumably a Yamaha PSR keyboard, you might find it
possible to start from one of the existing instrument lists in QWS.

Please also read the topic in the QWS manual how to make instrument lists for
full information.

The format is simple:

each line contains

MIDI channel,program,bank,name

for example:

-1, 0,15488,Piano 1

This means any MIDI channel, program 0, bank 15488, the instrument is called
Piano 1

There are a few lines you should put at the top, mostly comments.

Finally, test your instrument list by loading it and checking that everything
works.

Once you're ready, please send your list to me and I will be happy to add it to
the QWS website.

I trust this helps.

With best regards,

James.

Re: QWS List External Raw MIDI Data

2018-08-19 Thread JAMES BOWDEN
Hi Nyyki,

That's an interesting scenario you have there.

If it were me, I'd program my synth to do it. I don't know if you can do this
with your equipment:

Set a random stepping LFO and hook it to the sound, tempo-sync'd.

The other way I'd simulate it in QWS would be to manually enter some random
values for a certain number of beats, not linked to the time signature, so say
you're in 4/4 time, I might do, say, 37 beats (or some other weird number).
Then just copy. Because the length of your bass line isn't the same as the
length of your "random" pattern, it'll probably be OK.

I do have it noted the suggestion to have random values in the Progression
tool.

I hope this gives some possible ideas.

God bless,

James.

Subj: QWS List External Raw MIDI Data

This may get a bit too esoteric for some folks, but I'm going to try to keep
it simple enough to make it comprehensible.
QWS doesn't have a random function for generating events. This is something
not often needed, but here's a place where I'd like to use one. I've got a
tune with a bassline consisting of three synth bass sounds. The main one is
the basic sound, what will always be there. The other two are more complex
sounds, with more filter or a more interesting waveform. I want to be able
to set a threshold for these sounds, say for instance CC7 with a value of
zero to ninety five, then generate a random variation in this controller
data so each beat has a different level of these additional sounds. This
should create a sound that is always clear, but with some interesting
changes.
But QWS doesn't have a randomizer in it. I can generate the numbers -- go to
Excel, create a randbetween command and duplicate it as many times as I need
to create enough random values. I can even convert it to another format if
needed -- the Hex and Bin commands do that easily enough. With a little more
fiddling around I can turn this into the MIDI data I need. But then I'm
stuck, as I know of no way to drop raw MIDI data into QWS. I don't want to
have to go to all the trouble to hand build a standard MIDI file to do this,
as that seems like a lot of work if there's an easier way to make this
happen.
Any ideas?

Nyyki

Dear James and others,

@James: I think I reported this earlier to you privately, but I'm afraid
I never came back to it. Here is a report on the list for other's to
investigate as well.

On my windows 10 pc, when I change parameters in the note editor such as
the length of a note and I try to exit the length modal dialog with
either enter or escape or just one of the buttons, it seems the dialog
doesn't close properly. I have to click the dialog with the mouse to
give it the focus again, and have to close it once again to get back
into the note editor. Here is a short list of steps to reproduce:

1. Open a file and focus a track with notes

2. Press ctrl+k to focus the note editor

3. Select a note and press l

4. Press alt+e to edit the particular notes length

5. Press enter. The note is played with the new value

6. NVDA Reports: Note editor dialog unavailable. I can't get out of the
note editor by normal means, the length dialog still seems open
according to NVDA's objet navigation

7. When i Click the note dialog, it gets focus again, and I can either
close it with enter or escape. After that, I can return to adjusting
additional notes.

Are there others who experience this?

Kind regards,

Leonard

Hi David,

You raise a good question and the answer currently is that you cannot assign a
control knob to adjust tempo. This is a current limitation.

To assign a knob, you should go to the Options -> MIDI Assignments dialog, not
the Key assign dialog.

Currently, you can reassign a single control to do something, and you can also
reassign the pitch bend. I already have on the suggestion list to make all
controls mappable.

I trust this helps.

Does QWS respond to MIDI system common messages like Start, Stop, and pause?
And yes, being able to define a controller to tempo would be handy, as QWS
can map any controller to anything else. That said, it might need to have a
scaling factor involved -- using a single controller to do this would be too
few to cover the range needed, while a high-definition controller would show
no change for a wide band of values. Though I doubt anyone would use tempo
values of 1 very often, I can think of situations where it might be useful,
say for a fermata as one example, and tempo values go way above 127 -- I've
seen them at 320 in a particular tune. (Though nobody, even the Basie band,
played that tune at tempo, so it was a goal to strive for, not one anyone
I've heard reached, even though we got close in high school)

Re: QWS List sending through

2017-03-09 Thread JAMES BOWDEN
Hi David,

The responses you have had so far are right: this is going to be one for your
manual.

I don't have an XP30, but I may be able to shed a little light for you because
I have had similar Roland gear:

Presumably, you have the XP30 in Performance mode. In this mode, the XP will
respond to all MIDI channels. The 16 "parts" of the performance correspond to
the 16 MIDI channels.

So, what you need to do is find part 9 in the performance and disable it. This
will likely involve going through the menus on the XP30 or sending a carefully
crafted system exclusive message.
Note that it may also be possible to save the new configuration so you can call
it up again quite easily.

The other alternative is to have a second MIDI port direct from the computer to
the Zoom box, avoiding the THRU cable. That could perhaps involve buying more
hardware.

I trust this helps.

With best regards,

James.

Re: QWS List Assigning a peddle for play/stop?

2017-01-07 Thread JAMES BOWDEN
Hi Matt,

The feature you're looking for is "Key commands". Currently, QWS can use
particular keys on your keyboard to perform QWS commands - including play/stop.
The feature is found under Options -> Key COmmands. You also have to enable Key
Commands in the General options. The feature is currently limited to ordinary
note keys, so the consequence of using the function is that the key(s) you
choose for functions will not play. So I suggest to choose something like the
very top (or bottom) note on the keyboard which you are perhaps unlikely to
use.

icole is right: theoretically, it would be possible to use a pedal, it would
help to know what message(s) your pedal is sending.

I trust this helps.

With best regards,

James.

Then it's up to you if you want to delete it.

System Exclusive messages have no channel, so it is not possible to assign them
a channel. Therefore they are not copied. It would theoretically be possible to
copy them to the first track created, or to all tracks - but neither option
sounds ideal.

You mention deleting all notes, note that you can also delete controllers.

Hope this helps.

With best regards,

James.

Hello all

I try toe edit an existing midifile. After loading the file into qws, I
press more tools/channel split to have all tracks apart.

The problem is that this creates an extra channel on top of the list. Here I
can hear the entire song. It means that if I don't mute it, I hear the song
doubled, which I don't want of course.

Another problem is that this extra channel seems to contain all system exs,
so I cannot simply delete the extra channel, because then all channel
properties are gone.

I tried to select only notes and then delete them, but that doesn't work,
too.

Why is this channel created when you split the file into apart channels?
What can I do to avoid this?

Thank you

Geert

Re: QWS List [qws] metronome and odd time signature bug

2016-09-19 Thread JAMES BOWDEN
Hi Juan,

Many thanks for your email. I will have a look at your MIDI files and see what
I find.

Before I look at the code though, I will confirm that QWS works on beats, being
quarter notes (crotchets) and so playback and various other things currently
always work on this level of granularity.

Your "half beat" is a result of a single bar of 5/8 time - which, if I may,
does seem a rather irregular time signature.

One work around for this particular problem would be to double the lengths of
all the notes, using the Time Expand Tool, applied to all tracks, using 200%.
Then set your time signatures to 6/4 and 5/4 etc. Then you will be able to work
much more comfortably for the editing. Then reverse these changes for
production into sheet music.

As for the metronome problem you report, I will have to look into this when I
do some more coding. Please remind me about this.

I hope this helps.

With best regards,

James.

Hi, so I normally use qws nowadays for previewing sheet music I've
written. Rarely for editing midi, but it does help me somewhat when I
want to know exactly which bar I had made a misstake on, ETC. However,
there is this bug, if you will, that I find incredibly irritating,
especially when dealing on time signatures other than 3/4, 4/4, 2/2,
ETC. Try this and see for yourself:

1. Start with a midi file in 6/8 time, for one bar
2. On the next bar, insert a time signature change to 5/8
3. On the next bar, insert a time signature change on 6/8
4. Notice how the metronome for some odd reason, has to mark one more
eight note or one less eight note and does not keep on the real 6/8
change. And, whats even worse, if you try to set a marker (whether its
a number marker or a left or right one right on where the downbeat of
the 6/8 of that third bar should be,) the midi file starts playing
just before that first downbeat and thus there is no clear or even
precise way of editing or making the midi file sound right! I am
attaching a minimal example here, and the track that has the global
time sig. changes is the one without a midi channel number

Re: QWS List question of understanding

2016-07-12 Thread JAMES BOWDEN
Hi Alex,

I'm not sure what you quite mean by "without strength change"?

If you mean that you set the "Strictness" to 0, then nothing will happen and
this will leave all your notes unchanged.

If you put the Strictness at 100, then all notes will be moved exactly to the
beat, or part-beat, as desired; but in some cases, this can give a very
mechanical feel to the playing.

So, if you use a strictness of, say, 50, it means that notes will be moved
halfway from their current (unquantised) position to the strict position, and
so on.

Another tip that is sometimes necessary is to use the Clean Up tool first.

I hope this helps.

With best regards,

James.

When I record a part in QWS and quantize it, then it happens, that QWS
sets one of the tones, if it is an accord, 12 ticks earlier than the

Re: QWS List Another question

2016-07-11 Thread JAMES BOWDEN
Hi Alex,

The CC for Chorus is CC#93, and it is also in the Track Properties dialog. Of
course, applying a Chorus effect will depend on whether your keyboard supports
the message.

An alternative way to simulate such an effect - as you are hinting at is to
detune the second copy.

Easy way to do that (assuming there aren't any messages that will clash) is to
apply a slight pitch bend at the start ... and put it back afterwards!

You can manually insert a Pitch Bend message at the start of a track using the
Event List or Control Editor.

How much pitch bend to apply will depend on your taste and on the pitch bend
range setting. The range of the MIDI controller is -8192 to +8191, with 0 being
no pitch bend.

I hope this helps.

With best regards,

James.

that it dissents from hte other one? Sure, I could use a chorus, but I

Re: QWS List And, sorry, still a question

Hi Alex,

There are various ways, some obvious, some not so:

You could either:

1. Select all the track and Copy, then create a new track and Paste. Then
adjust the Track Properties of the new track.
This is the obvious method.

Alternatively:

2. Use the Tools -> More Tools -> Channel Split: This tool is designed to split
apart "Type 0 MIDI files" but can also be used to duplicate a track.
Note you will still have to adjust the Track Properties in the new track.

Hope this helps.

Re: QWS List Pitch Range

2016-07-10 Thread JAMES BOWDEN

Hi Alex,

Yes, there is a MIDI message to set the pitch bend range. Check the
documentation for your instrument to see if it is supported.

It's called a Registered Parameter.

here are the MIDI messages you'll need to set:

CC#100 = 0
CC#101 = 0

This pair select the pitch bend range parameter.

CC#6 = 12
This one sets the value = in this case 12 semitones.

Technically, you then should reset cc#100 and cc#101 to 127, to prevent any
further stray cc#6 messages further setting your pitch bend.

I have constructed a MIDI file for you, please see attached. Just copy it to
your own track.
Note, the MIDI file will not make any sound by itself.
Use the Event List to have a look at it.

Hope this helps.

With best regards,

James.

Hi Frank,

Most likely, you have extra program changes loitering in addition to the
instruments you had chosen.

My advice is to look at each track and search for any program changes or
bank changes and delete them. You can do this with the Find command and the
List Editor - or alternatively, use Tools - Select All Tracks, then
Tools - Delete Events.

Make sure you look at all tracks, because I think you mentioned a final

Hope this helps.

Hello Frank
Your description of this problem reminds me of a tricky but very easy
solvable feature. I think you are loading a midi file type 0 (all midi
channels put on one track). Before treating this kind of files you have to
do a channel split (go to tools extra tools and there you find channel
split)
The file changes to midi type 1 and shows you a track list with all
information that you could not see in the type 0 version.
(do not forget to remove your upper track from the list because that is
still the type 0 format running simultaniously with all other tracks).
Good luck and hope this helps!

There's a way to troubleshoot the file and fine where the problem is --
break up the file by banks as separate files and open QWS, selecting the

Just a reminder, the format is the MIDI channel, program number, bank,

before the patch name then you won't be able to use the first letter of
the

are completely kosher, so you can use numbers to reach the beginning of
banks. Also note that in most (but not all) instruments the program wants
the bank number to be a mixture of most and least significant bits, so
for
most instruments bank 0 is denoted as 0, while bank 1 is numbered 128,
etc,

in multiples of 128 going up.

Re: QWS List Sys-Ex dumps

Yes, Damien, that's right.

There are two ways:

Either you can put QWS into Record and press buttons on your synth to send
the dump, then save as .SYX.

Or, you can make two tracks in QWS. Write a Dump Request message into the
first track, then go back to start and Record on the second track. Then
delete the first track and save as .SYX. This second method requires no
button pushes on your synth, but does require you to manually input the Dump
Request message, which you would have to work out from the synth manual.

Anyway, hope this helps.

list pack for the Yamaha Tyros 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5. Mega!
You can find the new instrument list on the QWS website. Live!
It's in the Download section. Natural!
If anyone using a Tyros instrument could let me know if they work, that
would be, Sweet!

As ever, the web address is: qws.andrelouis.com. Cool!

So, have some Super Articulation (2).

I also uploaded a short article on Bank Select messages as the question
has come up once or twice how to calculate it.

Hope this helps.

With best regards,

James.

Re: QWS List QWS Block Copy and Editing Operations

Hi Nicole,

At present, QWS only allows you to copy individual tracks.

Block copy functions are on the suggestion list.

Subject: QWS List QWS Block Copy and Editing Operations

Hi folks.
I've been looking for ways to copy blocks of tracks to the clipboard, but it
doesn't seem to work for me. For example, I might want to copy a piano,
guitar, bass, and drum section of a chorus of a tune to the clipboard so I
can place that chorus in the form several times. Applying actions to all
tracks doesn't seem to do this, and saving as a type 0 MIDI file just to do
this seems cumbersome and overly complicated. I got used to doing this with
Sequencer Plus back in the day and I miss it, so is it even possible with
QWS, or am I going to have to continue copying individual track data and
running the risk of slips of the fingers when trying to copy blocks of
musical data?

Hi,

Yes, when you use any of the Split tools, QWS always creates new tracks and
keeps the original. It is deliberate. It applies to:

* Channel Split
* Key Split
* Velocity Split
* Length Split

Hope this helps.

Re: QWS List Drum Tracks

Hi Kevin,

Nicole has given you a good way to do what you want.

An alternative, that might be slightly quicker than always loading different
files is to use the File - Append command to load all your files together,
then use Nicole's method of lots of Copy/Paste to move the bits of drum
track into their correct positions.

Ah yes, remember to delete the extra appended tracks after you have
finished.

Hope this helps.

Re: QWS List Songs you have made

2014-08-02 Thread James Bowden

Hi Seth,

Good to hear from you and thanks for all your questions. Nicole has given
you some good answers.

To add to what has been said so far:

MIDI is just the instructions for what to play, not the actual sound. So,
the sound will come out of your keyboard speakers, that's normal.

You can make the sound come out of your PC by using an audio cable, such as
a jack to jack, to connect for example a line out or headphone output of
your keyboard to the line in of your PC. The type of cable you'll need will
depend on the model of keyboard and computer.

Regarding an instrument list, yes, we'd need the model of your keyboard to
do that. But, as Nicole has said, as you hav3e a Yamaha device, you could
start by using the XG list as a start.

You mentioned using channels with MIDI Yoke. Basically, it works just the
same as a hardware device: you can choose a MIDI Yoke port and then you have
16 possible MIDI channels you can use. MIDI Yoke normally gives you 8
different ports, so you have the possibility of loading seveal VST
instruments, like having many synthsisers.

So, for example, you can set up a VST to receive MIDI from In from MIDI Yoke
3. Then in QWS, you set the Port for each MIDI track to Out to MIDI Yoke 3.
You can then have multiple tracks in QWS, for example:

Piano; channel 1; Out to MIDI Yoke 3;
Bass; Channel 2; Out to MIDI Yoke 3
Guitar; channel 3; Out to MIDI Yoke 3
etc...

You m mentioned there's a delay when using VSTs with MIDI Yoke. This might
depend on the VST you are using, but there are settings you can adjust in
MIDI Yoke to try and get the best results. For example, in my copy (which
may not be the latest version), there is a Devices menu and you can find
some settings for Wave and ASIO.

Be aware that if you turn the latency down too much, you can instead
sometimes get little breaks in the music. Too much latency, and as you have
found, there is a delay between playing the note and it sounding.

Finally, you were asking about controller numbers. In the back of the QWS
manual, you can find a list of the more common ones.

Hope this helps,

James.

Subject: Re: QWS List Changing Pitch bend range in QWS event list

Hi Seth,

Aha, I think you need the Pitch Bend Range MIDI message.

It's one of the Registered Parameter Number (RPN) messages so it's a
little more complex than a single ordinary controller.

Here's the MIDI messages you need:

CC#101: 0
CC#100: 0
CC#6: value

So, that's controllers 101 and 100, both set to 0, then controller 6
will set the pitch bend range. I think you can set it value between 0
and 24.

For more about how this works, have a quick search on the web for MIDI
RPN pitch bend and you should find it.

So, in QWS, Event list, you need to:

Insert three Control Change messages.
Set the first one to Number 101; the second Number to 101; the third
Number to 6.

Set the Value of the first and second to 0; set the Value of the third
to the pitch bend range you want.

Finally, to avoid problems, I suggest moving the CC#6 message one tick
later.

Technically, after setting an RPN, you should reset CC#100 and CC#101
to 127, so further stray CC#6 values don't mess things up.

I hope this helps.

With best regards,

James.

Hi Nicole,

Thanks for your email.

Please let me know if you'd like me to add any new transforms, it's fairly
straightforward to do, just let me have a simple list of where you'd like
the 12 notes to go. e.g. C - C; C# - C, ... B - Ab. etc

Regarding you question about finding the next point where there's data,
Home, as you correctly state, takes you to the first beat where there's
data. The correct key to move to next is Ctrl+Right, just like moving to the
start of the next word in a wordprocessor.

Hope this helps and I look forward to receiving some interesting note
transforms from you to add.

With best regards,

James.

Subject: RE: QWS List Whole Tone Scale Transform

B is correct, in that it should probably be lowered, but the rest should
probably be raised a half step so they still function in their positions.
One of the main factors in a whole tone scale sounding alien is the
removal
of the leading tone, which is also a factor in most unaltered modes --
only

the Major/Ionian and Lydian modes have this half step to the tonic of the
scale relationship, and doubling the tonic is probably not optimum as
it'll
alter the shape of the melody and also make some fundamental changes in
the

harmonic structure of the piece too.
D#, or Eb is the third scale degree, as a flatted note is far more common
than an augmented supertonic note, and the lowered third is common in the
minor/Aeolian, Dorian, Phrygian, and Locrian modes. Moreover, lowering it
instead of raising it results in a missing tone in the scale, and since
the

third is one of the key color tones in any chord (in fact, the single most
common) it should be present. Lowering this removes some of the character
of
the whole tone scale and changes the fundamental melodic shape of the
line.

C#/Db is most often encountered in tonal music as either the Neopolitan
chord root or as a altered chord extension, and it's never a sharped tonic
and always a lowered supertonic.
F, G, and A are all raised to turn a normal scale into a whole tone scale,
so raising them makes clear theoretical sense.
So, to recap, only the B should be lowered, while the rest should be
raised.

And by the way, QWS is an interesting tool for doing score work. Since it
functions to some extent as a beat based instead of measure based MIDI
player you can do interesting things with it for scoring, especially if
you

know how to calculate the number of beats you need for a particular sound
cue. (Excel is wonderful for this) There are a couple of things that would
make it easier, like SMPTE support and a way to create a marker list set
at
particular points in a sequence, but it does the job right now fairly
well.
The one thing that I found myself wishing for was that pressing the home
key

on a track always takes you to the first note of a track, and there were
times when it'd have been nice that subsequent pressings of that key would
take me to where music starts up again after a period of no musical data
on

the track.

 Hello, folks.
While scoring a short film this week I needed the transforms to
convert

of my melodies into other scales, and I found what may be a bit of an
 error
with the whole tone scale transform.
A flatted third is converted to a second instead of the third when
this

 fix
the note before running the transform again, but this probably needs
 fixing.
This becomes a problem when converting minor or other minor mode

Also, does anyone have a good transform for the harmonic and melodic

harmonic
minor scale, with a single transform, would be handy.

QWS List Tyros instrument list

2014-02-05 Thread James Bowden

Hi,

Good news if you're still waiting for a list: I have found a potential

One question for any Tyros users: can you set drum kits on any MIDI channel,
or is it restricted to a particular channel?

Looking forward to hearing from you.

on their gear. It think it might be a gear problem, not a QWS problem, e.g.
it might need to be on a different channel, not sure.

Regarding MIDI THRU, QWS has a THRU option, on the MIDI menu, default is on.

Hope this helps.

Re: QWS List Enhancements / bug fixes to QWS

2013-07-09 Thread JAMES BOWDEN
Hi David,

Thanks for your email.

The basic feature you are asking for is for the Undo function to hold
more than just a track.
At present, Undo works on storing a previous copy of a track and then
if you ask to Undo, it simply replaces the current contents with the
saved Undo.

In order to restore a deleted track, or to be able to undo an
operation that was Applied to All tracks, the Undo would have to store
either a track, or series of tracks (i.e. a song).

I've also had a suggestion that there could be several layers of Undo
... for the time being, you just have to be careful as there's only
one.

Hope this helps and once again, thanks for the suggestion.

With best regards,

James.

On 07/07/2013, David (Mr Music) da...@mr-music.co.za wrote:
 Hi James

I'm not sure where my suggestion/request falls, but here goes.

In the manual it often says that you can do things and then
simply use the undo function if you want to reverse what you've done.

I notice places where this does not work, and hope it can be fixed.

For example: if you delete a track, and then
undo, that track is not replaced.

I know there are other similar circumstances too,
but cannot exactly remember what they are. However, I know
this sort of thing has happened to me a few times when using
some of the functions under the tool menu.

Could you, pretty please, have a look at this and fix it,
 if at all possible?

 Thanks

 David

Hi,
Using the all notes off feature helps, but if that doesn't work, there's
a

much easier way to do it in VSt Host. Instead of restarting it, you can
use the midi panic option, which has never failed for me. Go into VST
Host, and I believe midi panic is in the engine menu.
As for why the problem is occuring in the first place... maybe give your
midi interface a look, as others have said. Also, if you have separate
midi in and midi out, try disabling or unplugging midi out. If that
works,

then it is a midi setup issue and probably not a cable issue. Though if
it's as simple as that, it would've caused deadly midi feedback a long
time ago, if left unchecked, so I think that may not be the issue. Since
I've never had this problem, I don't know if that's a worthwhile line of
thought, but it's something that crossed my somewhat inexperienced mind
of

midi setup.

With regard to an update on QWS, I hope to have one out some time soon (no
guarantee when because life is busy) and it mainly contains bug fixes. One
of them is the changing of the filename when you do File - append. Several
others were to do with things that weren't going properly through the
translation system when you used a different language prompt file.

So, no major new features this time, but your ideas are still always welcome
and I do consider them for when I might have time to work on QWS
programming.

Thank you all once again for your patience and enthusiasm.

1. Save the mute status of tracks, so that when you reload a song

But I will certainly add them to the list.
I'm hoping to get a new version out some time - it's mainly little bug

Good suggestions, but it might not really be possible for your first two

QWS does save some basic data, but what it is, in essence, is a front end
for SMFs. (Standard MIDI Files) That's why metronome on or off isn't saved,
along with count-ins and other similar stuff. They're QWS settings, not
 file
 settings.
This is important as QWS doesn't save much at all in its file format,
 which
is a slightly enhanced SMF. And this is important because the files need to
be as clean as possible to ensure that they'll play in a variety of MIDI
 file players.
So hopefully James can implement your feature suggestions, but if he can't
this is probably the reason for it.

Unfortunately, splitting left hand and right hand automatically is an

Hi folks,

Just to clarify:

For nearly all of the tools, you can either not select anything - in
which case the tool is applied to the entire track; or you can select
a portion of a track and the tool only applies to that portion.

To select a portion of a track, you have two methods: either use the
Left and Right markers and then use the Select Marked command,
alternatively you can simply use Shift and the left/right cursor keys,
just as you would in a word processor.

I hope this helps.

Hi,

The instrument list file format for other programs may well not be the
same as for QWS. If you want to create an instrument list, please feel
free to do so, instructions are in the QWS manual. Once completed, if
you'd like to send it to me, I'd be happy to post it onto the QWS

Finally, I should emphasise that an instrument list is not an
essential component for using QWS successfully with your keyboard, it
is simply a convenience feature so you don't have to memorise MIDI
program and bank numbers.

I hope this helps.

Then press enter. If a program is found, you will be taken to its place,

 Hi Liz,

To add to what has already been written:

Yes, you can put a program change message anywhere you like in any track
 to
change the sound. Ideally, I recommend that you set up all tracks by
 using
the Init. Properties command on the Track menu. The shortcut is
 Alt+Enter.
This will select the settings that you want, at the start of each track.
It's best if you fill in all the boxes (unless you will never use some).
Making sure that all the boxes are filled in will mean that you don't get
any nasty errors when you load a new song and have settings left over
 from
 the previous one.

There is nothing to stop you adding further program changes part-way
 through
the track. You can do this either using the Change Properties command
 (again
on the Track menu), or using the Editors or even in some cases, by
 pressing
the buttons on your music keyboard.

It's also worth checking, if you have more than one track in your song,
generally, they should all have different MIDI channels (again, set this
 in
 the Initial Track Properties).

If you want to remove program changes from part-way through a track, you
 can
do this either with Tools or with Editors.

I hope this helps, let us know how you get on.

 With best regards,

 James.

Sure. MIDI program changes can fall anywhere in a track. You can use
the track properties (Alt+enter if I remember correctly) to set your
 instrument.
What are you using for your sound source? You'll want the correct
instrument definition file for what you're using.

Re: QWS List changing instrument

2013-04-22 Thread JAMES BOWDEN
Hi Liz,

To add to what has already been written:

Yes, you can put a program change message anywhere you like in any
track to change the sound. Ideally, I recommend that you set up all
tracks by using the Init. Properties command on the Track menu. The
shortcut is Alt+Enter. This will select the settings that you want, at
the start of each track. It's best if you fill in all the boxes
(unless you will never use some). Making sure that all the boxes are
filled in will mean that you don't get any nasty errors when you load
a new song and have settings left over from the previous one.

There is nothing to stop you adding further program changes part-way
through the track. You can do this either using the Change Properties
command (again on the Track menu), or using the Editors or even in
some cases, by pressing the buttons on your music keyboard.

It's also worth checking, if you have more than one track in your
song, generally, they should all have different MIDI channels (again,
set this in the Initial Track Properties).

If you want to remove program changes from part-way through a track,
you can do this either with Tools or with Editors.

I hope this helps, let us know how you get on.

With best regards,

James.

Re: QWS List Here's data; using this, how do I set up my instrument definition file?

2013-03-19 Thread JAMES BOWDEN
Hi,

Slight correction, the bank number is the MSB * 128 + the LSB. This is
how we combine the two raw values that go down the MIDI wire to the
more convenient one bank number.

Please also be aware that program numbers *always* go from 0 to 127 in
QWS, some manuals list them from 1 to 128. Simply subtract 1.

If you'd like, when you've finished and are happy with the list,
please send it to me and I can upload it to the website.

I hope this helps.

I made a post a while back here on using Excel and Notepad to do this -- if

So your first column is probably going to be a -1 unless it's a drum

On your four part list from the manual discard the first column -- you
 don't
need the internal patch numbers for anything in particular. Your second
column is the MIDI program change number. Your third column is the MSB

the LSB. The fourth column is the patch name. These are all separated by
commas -- don't use commas anywhere else.
Open one of the existing patch maps and look at how it's set up for info.

 Hi Friends

Okay, am not getting any Yamaha DGX-640 instrument definition file, so I'm
happy to make my own, but I need info please.

From what I understand there are four columns of info:
the first one is the MIDI channel,
the second one is the patch number,
the third one is the bank,
the fourth one is the patch name.

Firstly, the term midi chanel is confusing to me, because I associate
 that
term with the midi send and receive chanels, and obviously a certain patch
could be played on any of the 16 channels.

Secondly, here;s the data sheet layout from my DGX-640. It has columns:
Col 1: voice no (running sequentially up from 1 to 535), col 2: msb, col 3:
lsb, col 4: midi program change number, col 5: voice name.

How do I use the above data to arrive at the info for the
4 columns in the instrument definition file?

PLEASE HELP! I receently got the new piano, and cannot access its great
sounds via the standard xg template.

 Thanks so much

 David

Re: QWS List chuseing midi ports with MidiYoke an VstHost.

2013-01-22 Thread JAMES BOWDEN
Hi,

In VstHost, you set up which VST instruments (which are often synths
with many sounds) go on which MIDI Yoke port.

So, (picking fictitious names of VST's), assume I loaded a VST called
My amazing super synth and put it on Yoke 1. Then I also loaded a
second VST called Brailliant pianos and linked that to Yoke 2.

Now in QWS, I could either use the piano sound and the string sound
from My amazing super synth in which cawse, I'd set the Port to Yoke
1 and choose different MIDI channels and different program numbers.

Alternatively, I could use the strings from My Amazing Super Synth
on Yoke 1 for track 1, and a piano sound from Brailliant Pianos on
Yoke 2 on track 2.

It all depends on what VST has the sound you want.

Note that MIDI Yoke as standard I think has 8 ports. Note that's 8
MIDI ports, each supporting 16 channels, giving a possible maximum of
128 MIDI channels, not just 8 channels.

Note also that you can set friendly names for each MIDI port in QWS.
If you keep the same setup, it can be helpful to assign friendly names
to your ports so you don't wonder now, what's on Yoke 1 again?.

I hope this helps.

With best regards,

James.

Hi Juan,

No problem. Did you get the translation documentation from me when you
made the translation? There is a section in the doc about doing
precisely what you want to do.

You will need QWS, a text editor (both are standard anyway) and also a
file comparison program, such as Windiff from Microsoft.

You then run QWS with a special option and compare the old and new files.

Let me know if you need another copy of the documentation.

Re: QWS List Midi effects

2012-11-16 Thread James Bowden

Hi,

By MIDI effects, we normally mean MIDI Control Change messages and certainly
you can add these in QWS. The problem then is, does your synth accept them?

Unfortunately, not all synths support all controllers - and the only thing I
can suggest is to consult the MIDI Implementation Chart at the back of the
manual for your synth.

If you want to go down the route of making a MIDI for a specific synth and
you're not phased by lots of hexadecimal numbers, your synth may be able to
accept certain system exclusive messages which might configure an effect
unit in your particular synth. I can't give specific details here because,
being exclusive, they are different for every synth - again, details in your
synth manual.

Finally though, you can easily simulate a kind of delay effect by
duplicating a track, then Time Gliding it a little, then decreasing the
volume. It's best to use a second channel so you can use the track Volume to
set the overall volume of the delay sound, rather than reducing velocity of
the notes.

Hope this helps.

With best regards,

James.

Re: QWS List To quantize, or not to quantize

2012-10-25 Thread JAMES BOWDEN
Hi,

Nicole is right, Quantise actually alters the note data.

Here are two tricks I use for adding a rit at the end:

1. Play strictly according to the metronome throughout an entire
track. Then add tempo changes where you want the rit. It is sometimes
difficult to get the tempo changes right, but this is the MIDI
purist's best solution.

2. Alternatively, what I do sometimes is play according to the
metronome, but then ignore it when I want to add the rit at the end.
Then, quantise *only* the part before the rit.

Hope this helps.

James.

On a broader scale, quantization is good for fixing note flubs and the like
and if your rhythm isn't the best, but especially for percussion tracks
don't quantize everything. If you want realistic rock drums, for example,
quantize everything except the hi-hat, as that's where most rock drummers
put their feel elements. For jazz don't quantize the ride cymbal. This will
make your tracks sound more realistic.

Hi,

In terms of what data can be transmitted and received: USB and

The possible advantage of using USB is the data transmission rate may be faster.

The possible advantage of using MIDI sockets is that you don't need a
computer - e.g. you can connect a keyboard directly to a module for
live performance. If using USB, you'd probably need a computer
between them.

Hope this helps.

Re: QWS List determining patch and program number

2012-08-07 Thread James Bowden

Hi folks,

A couple of things here:

First, some instruments will transmit the program/bank numbers when you
select sounds on the keyboard. If you have the Track Properties dialog
open, QWS can recognise this info and will automatically fill in the values
in the Program and Bank.

Note however that not all keyboards will send this information. Consult
your keyboard's manual.

Second: a reminder that in MIDI, many values go from 0-127. So, if you
enter a value such as 174 or 192 into the Program box, this is invalid data.
Program goes from 0-127, bank goes from 0-16383.

Also, have a look in the List Archive, I think Nicole made some interesting
remarks about how you can build instrument lists. Information about the
list is at the bottom of every list email.

I hope this helps.

With best regards,

James.

Re: QWS List Question on volume manipulation

2012-07-25 Thread JAMES BOWDEN
Hi folks,

Just a couple of points to add to this discussion which I hope are helpful:

1. There is an important difference between a Progression of MIDI
controllers and what the Velocity Crescendo tool does:

* Progression will insert new MIDI events, for example Volume controllers;

* The Velocity Crescendo tool will adjust the Velocities of existing notes.

So, if you had a single sustained note and try and use the Velocity
Crescendo tool, chances are that nothing will happen because there's
only 1 note.

2. MIDI Controllers Volume and Expression:
As far as I am aware, CC#7 (Volume) and CC#11 (Expression) normally
effectively have the same effect of changing the volume. If your
synth supports both of these controllers, then, as I understand it,
you can use CC#7 (Volume) to set the overall volume of each track, a
bit like the faders on a mixer desk.

Then, if you want to adjust the volume (expression) within a track,
use CC#11 (Expression). This means that you can still use CC#7 to
adjust the overall mix and all the dynamics you put in with CC#11
don't need any adjustment.

If I can use an analogy:

CC#11 is the musician's volume control on stage;
CC#7 is the sound tech's volume on the mixer console at the back.

Final tip: if you plan to use Expression within a track, make sure you
also set the initial value at the start of the track. This has to be
done manually by adding an event, use either the Event List or
Controller Editor).

I hope this helps.

With best regards,

James.

 Hi Nicole

Thanks for responding so promptly. I'm doing something wrong, it does not
work!!! here is what I did!

All tracks are at different volumes, so I need to use the percentage,
 which
means I am using the volume/crescendo tool!

I go to tools and check apply to all tracks.
I go to go to and clear all markers.
I go to the first beat (bar) of the region.
 I set a left marker with shift-l.
I go to the last beat (bar) of my region.
I set the right marker shift-r.

Now I go to the start of my region by pressing l (go to marker).
I enter on select marked in the edit submenu.
I go to more tools in the tools menu.
 I enter on velocity/cresendo.
I type a value of 70 (to create a decrescendo effect), and press OK.

When I play back nothing has changed.

I then go and look in events, expecting a series of events to be present
 on

Let's see if I can make some sense of this for you.
QWS does some slightly strange things with controllers and other
 messages,
including note on messages. It uses its last value on a track and
 doesn't
chase any values from earlier like most other sequencers do. So it is
something of a chaotic thing to determine where it will all fit in and
 what
 results you'll get.
This may or may not work, as this control works in most situations but
 not
some select others. Before performing your volume change, click on the
 entry
in the tools menu near the bottom that says, Apply to all tracks. This
 may
give you the crescendo/decrescendo you want on all tracks.
Either tool will do the job, depending on how you think about it. Some

Re: QWS List QWS and receiving MSGs from keyboard

2012-06-13 Thread JAMES BOWDEN
Hi,

QWS will listen for MIDI messages on any channel and most likely is
recording everything all the time.

First thing to do is to check in QWS exactly what you are receiving
for the distortion effect. Try using the Event list for this.

If it is a system exclusive message (the most likely case), then it is
not a channel message. That means, it doesn't contain a MIDI channel
as such and it doesn't matter what channel you are using in QWS.

The system exclusive message may well contain specific instructions to
your keyboard, that only your keyboard understands, to configure the
effects processors for particular channels. You will have to consult
the manual for your keyboard if this is the case to see if you can
tweak the parameters of the sysex to make it work on other channels.

Incidentally, you did not say what keyboard you are using.

Another thing to consider is that many keyboards do not have 16
effects processors, you may have to select which channels respond to
the effects processors ... and you guessed, this is also done with
system exclusive messages.

Personally speaking, on my synth, which has three effects processors,
I have created a template performance that makes channels 1, 2 and 3
take the default effects from whatever sound I select. That means
channels 4-16 do not have dedicated effects processors; I then have
to arrange that sounds which rely on effects go on those first three
channels.

Hope this helps a bit.

With best regards,

James.

Hi Claudio,

Yes, use the sysex messages to create sounds in the XV-2020, I believe

Roland call sounds patches, so if you want to get into the real

Having said all this, I wrote an editor for the Roland XV series of

Hello Claudio,

I sent you a separate message about translating QWS, but now I will answer
your other question:

Unfortunately, I do not have a program that can do printed music score. FOr
For those times where I have had to do it myself, I have just managed with a
Windows font and typed the music into Word. It's not an ideal solution
and it's only good if you have a lot of patience and only need simple
notation.

As you are aware, QWS does not produce printed music itself, which I know is
one area which would need a lot of work if ever I decided to add it.

I believe one of the popular programs for producing music score is called
Sibelius, but I don't know how good that is with NVDA. I have only heard of
people using it with Jaws and then, they have to use a *lot* of scripts to
make it work.

I don't know if other people have had success with some other programs.

Sorry I can't be more help on this one.

With best regards,

James.

Hi Matthew,

Normally with Roland gear, there are two ways to set up your effects: the
first is through the menu system, the second is using system exclusive
messages. Sometimes there might be simple controller messages to set basic
parameters such as chorus send level and reverb send level.

If you want to go the sysex route, then details will be in the back of your

Re: QWS List Roland JV-1010 questions

2012-04-11 Thread JAMES BOWDEN
Hi Jayson,

Please note your message got automatically marked as spam - maybe my
email realised the message is a little off topic as you're mentioning
other MIDI sequencers. Never mind, I can try and help...

I have a Roland JV-1010, so I hope the following is helpful. I can
also send you some more information if you like as I wrote out some
instructions some years ago about how it works.

Here's a description of the controls on the front. Incidentally, the
same is mostly the same for the XV-2020 I think.

1. Volume control. Sets the volume when turned. It's the preview
function when pressed.

2. Part knob. This selects any of the 16 performance parts.
Normally, part = MIDI channel, so you can also think of this as the
MIDI channel knob.

There is no physical marker on the knob (which would be helpful), but
channel 1 is straight up. I recommend keeping the part knob at part 1
when not otherwise needed. One of the easiest ways to work out what
part it's on is to turn it and use the Preview function (press
Volume). Part 10 is always drums, so you can count from there as a
reference.

3. Value dial. When turned, this can select instruments. Also, in
the Parameter Edit mode, it selects parameter settings.

When pressed, Value selects one of the modes for the JV-1010:

* Patch mode
* Performance mode
* Rhythm/drums mode
* GM mode.

Again, you can probably best find what mode you're in by using the
Preview function and the Drums mode as a reference.
Personally speaking, I never use the drums or GM mode and very rarely
use Patch mode. I would recommend using Performance all the time as
the unit will respond to all 16 MIDI channels and also will let you
change bnaks.

4. Category knob.
Normally, this knob selects which bank/category of sound you will
select then you turn the Value dial.

Again personally, I never use the categories as the sounds come from
all kinds of banks and the categories do not include User sounds you
might make.

Again, as a reference point, learn which sounds are at the beginning
of each bank and category and you can go from there. Personally
speaking, I nearly always have the category knob pointing to User (at
the top).

You can access all sounds just using the Banks, turning the category
knob to the right from User:

User, Exp-A (session SRJV-09), Bank A, B, C, D (GM), E, Exp-B (the
installable SRJV card).

One click further than this gets you the demo mode. After that you're
in categories.

OK, I hope this can get you on your way. There are things I have not
covered in this email, but if you need further info, let me know
off-list.

With best regards,

James.

volume/audition. Then there's a really clicky knob, then a less clicky knob

push-in select? And then another really clicky knob. Can anyone tell me how
to set things up so MIDI applications have full control over which channels

Re: QWS List interfacing yamaha p155 digital piano with laptop and qws.

Hi,

I also use an M-Audio MIDI Sport. Mine has never let me down. They
also come in different sizes (1 in, 1 out; 2 in 2 out etc) I have the
4 in 4 out model.

The advantage of using MIDI cables is you won't need to load different
drivers for each bit of kit you want to connect - just install the
MIDI interface and everything should work. Also, some keyboards
(particularly older ones) don't have USB.

The advantage of using USB cables is that the data rate may be faster
and you won't need to buy extra hardware and MIDI cables.

I hope this helps.

If your piano uses USB as its MIDI port, there is doubtless a driver

Re: QWS List conflicting notes in the note editor

2012-03-15 Thread JAMES BOWDEN
Hi,

Yes, I have encountered the problem of colliding notes when using the
Note Editor, but for me it's not too much of a problem. When I've
encountered it, I often find that the notes shouldn't really overlap
anyway (e.g. on a bass part or single voice harmony part). There are
a few ways around it, including:

1. Press Enter and enter value (or play a note on your keyboard).

2. Shorten length first so it doesn't collide.
3. Use the F7 F8 and then come back in from the other direction.
4. Delete other note and then put back...

But, as has been suggested, if you deliberately want overlapping
notes, I suggest using two tracks.

Ideally, I think notes should not overlap and I would be reluctant to
turn off the checking in the Note Editor. Here's why:

First, on a conceptual level: once a key is down, it is impossible to
put it down a second time.

Second, different synths behave differently: if you play the same note
on twice and then release one of them, some will stop all of them
while others stop just one.

Third, it's ambiguous: This is my main reason why not to change it. Example:
Let:
Note 1 starts at beat 1 and is 3 beats long.
Note 2 starts at beat 2 and is 1 beat long.

Now, assume you are editing note 1 and you raise the pitch until it
crashes into note 2.

Now, if I continue raising the pitch of note 1, what's going to
happen? you now have a note starting at beat 1 that lasts only 2 beats
and note 2 starting at beat 2 now also lasts 2 beats ... they have
stopped over the note off messages. This is because it is impossible
to work out which of the note off messages belongs to which of the
note on messages.

Hope this helps.

James.

Being a bit of a perfectionist and not always having a midi controller
handy, I often find myself using the note editor to tweek midi files.
For the most part, I love the way the editor works and know of nothing
quite as simple to use. However, I have one, major problem with it.

If at any time I try to adjust a note to something that would conflict
with another note of the same value, it refuses to move. By adjust,
I'm referring to use of the f5 through f8 keys. I hear the widows
default sound, and the note doesn't change values at all. This makes
sense in principle, because of course nobody wants to have conflicting
 notes.
But what if I want to change the pitch of a note, to a b, past a c,
and to a c sharp, and there happens to be a c in the way? Instead of
pressing the f6 key twice and being done with it, I have to press it,
hear the ding, realize there's a note in the way and then enter that
value manually, sometimes looking at the octave first to make sure I have
 it right.

I'm not sure how many others do this, but I'm imagining the number is low.
QWS still remains one of the programs I know better than the back of
my hand, so I get things done in what I think is the most efficient
way possible. I'd very much like to see an option to disable note
conflict checking. After all, that is what the clean up option is for, in
 my opinion.
Perhaps, as a substitute, a clean-up could optionally be performed on
the selected track after the note editor is closed.

 Thoughts?

make sense in the manual and so on, so it's also good for me to learn where
some things can do with some more explanations.

Incidentally, have you had a look at the audio tutorials I did for QWS? You
can find them on the Downloads page on the website, if you're interested.
There are three sessions at present, but I am thinking at of doing one more
when I get a bit of time.

Anyway, hope you have a good weekend and hear from you again.

With best regards,

James.

Hi James
sorry about the delay in getting back to you. thanks for the info on my
velocity problem. I think it makes sense. i find once i've worked through
something step by step, it makes sense. I'm a pracical learner. thanks for
a great program which i find more interesting the more i get to use it. I'
a pure amateur musically, but i know what i like. I heard a quote today,
although i don't know who said it, the woods would be a quiet place if
only the best were allowed to sing. Well that somes up many aspects of
life, especially music. thanks again,

Brian--

You can do this already in one of two ways:

1. Use the MIDI Assignments in the Options menu to set up velocity
transformations, or
2. Use the Change Velocity Tool after recording.

Either way you give a velocity proportion and offset value.

If you want a particular range, just do a little math(s).

So you want minimum value as 80 = offset = 80.
You want the maximum to be 100, so that's a range of 20. So the
proportion of original can be calculated.

Two possibilities: if you know the full range 1-127 is used, then you
want roughly speaking 16%.

If you know that there are no velocities below or above a different
range in the original, you can adjust the proportion and the offset
accordingly.

Hope this helps.

James.

Hi all
really getting into qws now. having recorded some tracks i have a track
where the velocity is too high or low. is there a way to select a whole
track and ask it to keep the velocity between two values, e.g., 80 to
100? thanks in hope,
