QWS List thank you plus issues
Hello, List Members, First I wanted to thank you all while I struggled through problems with my Medeli keyboard. Then there was time spent trying to help make QWS work with virtual instruments. It ended up that my Triton rack was retulrned me. I set it up with a USB to MIDI box. I was able to go through various instruments and hear them. After 20 minutes or so, the Triton quit operating as it should. Well, it's been repaired. The service shop even updated the firmware, and that's the trouble. To make this synthesizer work properly, it must have the map set to Korg and not MIDI. I don't know how to do that. Once that is done, maybe all will be right. Is there a way to play MIDI files without QWS? If there's no way, is there a way to make QWS be the default program for playing MIDIs? I thought there was a way but couldn't find it in the manual. Thank you. Joe G. To unsubscribe or change list options, see http://lists.andrelouis.com for archived list posts, see http://www.mail-archive.com/qws@andrelouis.com
Re: QWS List virtual instruments
Hi, Sim on, From what I read, I understood that Yoke Midi was easier to work with than Loop Midi. I liked the idea that Loop Midi could run on Win 10. I downloaded the software. I ran it. It found Proteus VX but it found an error. Tabbing around, I was asked for a new Port. I don't have one. It said that Proteus had zero bytes. Nothing runs according to script.Looks like the only I'll ever sequence is to have someone on the phone with me and listen as I work through all the things which need to happen so everything runs and that QWS is happy and I'm happy. If there's a brave soul out there who would be willing to work with me, my email is joegio...@gmail.co We can exchange numbers privately. However this ends up, you surely have my sincere thanks to have stayed with me for what seems like an eternity. Hi again, Simon, I can report that the program is installed, sort of. I go back to the setup screen. It asks if I want to repair or remove the program. Well, I take repair. I'm told to reboot before the program is fully ready to use. I do and am again taken to that same screen where I'm told to reboot. I looked for an installed instance of the program but didn't find it so I'm back to that final step. Hi, I was running Win 7. It seems as though Loop Midi is more complicated and it intrudes itself at odd times. Midi yoke is the first program which is fussy enough to stop the installation when confronted with a UAC message. Re: QWS List triton setup
No, people! I could not in my wildest nightmares make this up!! To start, I have not looked at Nichole's attached file because I had the Triton instrument list from a time I owned the Triton. Here we go! I assigned the Triton list to a test track. My wiring was correct and I could move among instruments and hear them when I pressed keys on the controler. Then the audio level dropped. I could no longer identify what the selected sound was nor was it certain what note I'd hear when I pressed a key. I tried playing a MIDI file then, and it was almost unrecognizable. I went through all of this again tonight and all SEEMED well. I tried to play that file again, and it started well, but it wasn't nlong before it went awry. The best I can hope for is that the power supply's voltage is too low. Because of the connecter, there was no way to measure voltage. If I had two straight pins I could have jammed one into each conductor and obtained a reading, but no pins. I suspect that it's the rack which has failed. A chip starts to operate but breaks down as it heats. I told you I couldn't make up this story!! I sure don't knolw if there are other sound modules around, and I really don't have the money to buy one. That brings me back to VST. You know what happened the last time I tried that. All I can say is to thank you for your amazing amount of patience! Joe G. QWS List triton setup
Good afternoon List, I now have the Triton rack and the USB to MIDI adapter. The adapter has two sets of In and out MIDI jacks. This is not a Merge box. The keyboard connects to the computer. Another USB Nport on that computer connects to the USB port on the Box. To this point I don't have the Triton plugged in because I don't know which jack represents which port. I run QWS and I see all expected ports. I check the keyboard out. I see In and Out ports on the box. I select an output port. At this point I try the rack in all ports on the box. Key presses on the controller produce no sound from the nTriton. I go to the track menu and try to set all ports. QWS says that that option is disabled. I don't get that! Does all this never and? Re: QWS List virtual instruments
I heard there were problems with Hal computers but by this time all such deficiencies should have been overcome. Thanks for the warning. I just cancelled my order before it shipped out!! I thought I'd see the ports in QWS. I hope that the Rack still works. It's possible that the memory backup battery failed. That's replaceable but some memory info would be lost. I'd nhave to remap the unit. If the Triton can't be salvaged, I'd need to go back to Proteus. I can't run that program because it can't initialize the audio. The drivers for that are working as they should. Midiyoke won't load either and I don't remember what the message was. I hope you know that I have used computers for years even though it must look like I'm a rank clutz! Joe G. If you have an audio interface, it may already have a midi interface built into it, and if that’s the case you could just use that with a midi cable. Re: QWS List virtual instruments
se I find Reaper too daunting to get used to sequencing with it. I"m slowly trying and learning some tricks, but I'm so much faster with QWS it's not even funny. Granted Seth is very much right that once you start doing anything serious with a bunch of vsts, you're going to want to do it in Reaper as much as you can. I have personal experience with the pain of routing through virtual midi cables and using QWS. It can certainly be done, but gets annoying to say the least. On 6/22/21, Seth Lowman wrote: Oh, and the KK packages vary depending on which one you get. I believe the smallest one offers a few pianos and synthesizers, while the largest one, Komplete CE offers the entire gamut, from pianos and synthesizers, to drums, guitar, basses, orchestral instruments, etc. now that I’m thinking about it, you could probably make KK work with QWS, though you would have to use a virtual midi loop cable such as Midi Yolk or Loopbe1. You won’t need VST host though, as KK has its own standalone application. However, using it that way seems like it would be extremely complicated, as you would have to do things with instances and all sorts of other goofiness in order to make it all work. The best way to use KK is to use it in reaper or logic, as those programs have built-in support for KK. Of course, if anybody else knows more about using it with QWS, please chime in. God bless! Hello Seth, I think I Might have Loopmidi ready. I tried downloading the vx instrument list from the QWS site. There's a link which points to the list but it won't open and let me downloaed it. In fact, no other lists will downloaed when I enter on the link. I try running Proteus vx. i'm told that the drivers won't nopen, and to check that in Device Manager. I did that and the report comes back that the drivers were operating correctly. I must be using a previous model Hal, 8998! Joe G. On 6/22/2021 6:31 PM, Seth Lowman wrote: Proteus VX is not a collection of fonts; rather, it is a standalone synthesizer that will load a bank of its own proprietary presets when you open it on your computer. In order to use it with QWS, you need the virtual midi cable I was talking about earlier. I have also gotten it to work as a VST in reaper, but not with VST host. The most straightforward way to use it with QWS is to run it as a standalone program, then from the edit menu, go into preferences set your midi in device to the in Port on which ever virtual cable you’re using: for example, in from midi yoke 1. Then, go to QWS, create a new track, and set the port to your out port, such as out to midi yolk 1. This software instrument is multitimbrel, so you can create multiple tracks with it. It uses banks 0, 1, 2, and maybe 3 and four for its instrument presets, and there is also an instrument list for it on the QWS website. Hopefully this will help you out and getting started with Proteus VX. God bless! Re: QWS List virtual instruments
Hi, Seth, This sounds promising. It is too late for me to work with it tonight. If we add what Nicole said, this can be a cool possibility for me. I'll let you know what happens.
I t hink the Medeli will work as a MIDI controler. Besides that, it is an 88 key unit. Although reading about all the other possibilities, I suspect that the original thoughts about working wigth VSTHOST is probably what is best for me if someone can point me in the right direction. Along with all of this, I got the Proteus VX but there are many items related to that, and I think I might not have what I need. This version put itself into a specific folder rather than acting as a neutral collection of fonts. \ People, I sure hope you can lead me in a more or less straight path!! Joe G. There are a lot of free and inexpensive Kontakt libraries you could load up and use. You can buy more expensive controllers from them, and you can upgrade your Komplete to one of several expansions that go all the way up to the jaw-droppingly expensive Collectors' Edition, but that is by no means a requirement for making good music or getting into the Komplete ecosystem. Hello, I am so thankful for your note. I know it should have been answered sooner, but your message ended up in my spam folder. You have an interesting idea here. My Win 7 back-up machine has the same setup as this one and it runs fine. I sure are not saying that you're wrong but I certainly don't see it now. Again, thank you for writing. Joe G. Re: QWS List program and bank assignments and spread sheet
Hello, Nicole, I understand much of what you wrote here. I do not yet know how to start the process. You wrote: What you need: A spreadsheet that'll read the file Microsoft Notepad An instrument definition file to make sure you're getting the format right. Obviously a spread sheet isn't a program. Looks like there's supposed to be a program which can work with a spread sheet, and I do not know what that is. Is there a possibility that we could talk on the phone and work with me to create the instrument list? We could exchange phoneoff list if desired. At my age opf 92, I'm pretty sure I'll need some assistance. I sincerely thank you for your interest. Joe G. On 5/14/2021 3:14 PM, Nicole Massey wrote: I used to do this all the time. It's been a while, though my explanation is on this list somewhere. What you need: A spreadsheet that'll read the file Microsoft Notepad An instrument definition file to make sure you're getting the format right. Chances are good what they sent you will have the bank, program, and patch name, and most likely it'll be in different columns. You need to add the MIDI channel for each program, which goes first. So the order is MIDI channel, Bank, Program Number, Program name. If you're using a multi-timbral instrument that'll play on all 16 channels (with channel 10 doing drum sounds) you can use a MIDI channel of -1 for the normal programs and 10 for your drum maps. So get things set up so it matches the structure above. While you're doing this, go through the program names and look for odd characters, because some will cause the file to stop returning information when encountered. When you've got your table set up, open a notepad session and also open the definition file you've selected as an example. Press Control+End to get to the last cell in your table in the spreadsheet. Then press Control+Shift+Home to select everything. Press Control+C to copy everything in the spreadsheet. Go to Notepad, and use Control+V to paste the table in. Go to the top and highlight the first tab and the numbers surrounding it, which will probably be a 1 from the MIDI channel and a 0 from the bank. Press Control+H to open the find and replace. Control+V to paste the numbers with the tab in the middle into the find box, then delete both numbers so only a tab is in that box. Press the tab key to get to the replace box and type a comma. Tab down to Replace all and hit the spacebar. It may take a moment to get through everything. Give it a bit of time then press Cancel and you should find everything separated by commas instead of tabs. Go back to the top and copy the format header and instrument name line from the other definition file, changing any instrument references to the synth you're referencing in the new file. Save it, using the QWS instrument definition list naming protocol. Open QWS, load it, and check that it works. If you get an error you've stumbled somewhere or one of those illegal characters snuck past you and you'll have to find it. Hope this helps. Re: QWS List ports problem revisited
Seth, there is no driver needed for my synth. I selected ports with track properties. The port didn't open and the file didn't play. It's apparent that there's a computer problem because this synth works as it should with Win 7. It's above my knowledge so I asked a knowledgeable computer man for help. I thank you and Nicole for your thoughts. Joe G. On 5/1/2021 3:18 PM, Seth Lowman wrote: Hmmm, how strange. What kind of keyboard do you have? If it’s one that requires you to install the driver, it could be that your driver is corrupt and it needs to be reinstalled. Also something to consider, sometimes QWS will say on start up that it can’t open a midi port, but sometimes you can still choose it in the track properties dialogue and it will work anyway. Re: QWS List playing midi files
Hello, Ivan, The most likely reason that QWS does not play MIDI files is that the proper output port was not selected. Much depends upon your setup: what and how many synths are connected, whether you are using the Microsoft wave tables, etc. I cannot give you specific solutions, but you should check the QWS manual about ports and how to set select and set them. Joe G. - Original Message - From: Ivan Pivac i...@zabonne.co.nz To: QWS list qws@AndreLouis.COM Date: Saturday, Aug 6, 2011 05:10:33 Subject: QWS List playing midi files Hi, I have recently joined the QWS list and have a query. I did install the first version of QWS back in 2003 and it worked well and I had no difficulty playing midi files. Today, I installed the latest version and believing pressing the spacebar would play a file as before, only to discover that it didn't. The manual indicates that the spacebar does start and stop playing. Even the example song that is supplied with QWS won't play. Is there something I'm missing? Re: QWS List playing midi files
Ivan, I still believe that you must look at the ports business. This is usually done in the track properties. Load a MIDI file and check track properties. I must tell you that I have not used QWS lately and must get back to it. Therefore, I can't be of more help. It's all described in Mr. Bowden's excellent manual which you no doubt received as part of the QWS package. Joe G. - Original Message - From: Ivan Pivac i...@zabonne.co.nz To: QWS list qws@AndreLouis.COM Date: Saturday, Aug 6, 2011 18:29:20 Subject: QWS List playing midi files Hi Joe, Many thanks for your reply re my query playing midi files with QWS. I don't actually have any synths connected to my PC. With the original QWS program, I could just open a midi and play it using the spacebar. I could also delete instruments and carry out other tasks in QWS. Once I had finished changing a midi file that I had downloaded from Internet, I could then record the midi as it was playing then finally save it as a wav or mp3 file to play through an amp as a backing track. As yet, I don't have a keyboard of any kind as I play guitar. However, I am seriously looking at one and that's the reason for installing QWS again. I hope this explanation makes more sense of what I have been doing and want to achieve? Re: QWS List getting started with qws
Hi, Ken, A program and instrument are more or less interchangeable. When we discuss the various sounds in a synthesizer, we call the instruments. Later you may want to make up an instrument list which can give easy access to the sounds in your unit. For now it's best to learn the basics of MIDI as well as how to edit MIDI files. I'm in the United States as is true of many of the subscribers to this list. It really does not matter if you write to someone in this country or elsewhere. Many people overseas are experts with QWS, including its author. Joe G. On Mon, 21 Jan 2008 11:59:32 -0500, Kenneth Reed wrote: Hi folks, I'm just getting started with qws. Re: QWS List QWS difficulty
Hello, Khmer, Your question could have many answers. Do you ever get sound from your soundcard when you press keys on your keyboard? If you do, can you set up in such a way that you hear rhythms? If you can hear these, it sounds to me that you have not set up the metronome in the play menu. I think this is the first item in the list. More could be said, but this is a starting point. By the way, just pressing f 4 won't start the metronome. You must have a track containing music. If you do not have one, record a short passage. If the metronome was turned on at the start of a recording, you should hea! it counting. If you do not hear anything, it is possible that the metronome was off. f 4 toggles the metronome either on or off. Hi, Listers, You can treat the QChord as you would treat ANY MIDI synth, except, of course, that you would need to set the QChord for MIDI expansion. Joe G.
