I feel the same way about the 1973 Motobecane Grand Record: wonderful bike; tho' my two Riv Customs are even nicer in handling and, of course, in every other way. Re the Sam Hill: I bought it (1) as a touring bike and (2) as an all rounder for those times when I want to go further or steeper than my fixeds and ss's allow. It will be fine for #1; for #2, perhaps next year I'll get a second, SRAM i9 wheelset disk wheelset for the Monocog. Or we'll see how the supposedly forthcoming Alfine 11 does. [RBW] Re: Has anyone tried White Industries Urban Pedal?
I am interested in getting this combo, but I was wondering about your comment re: dirty shoes. I've noticed that when I put a Sigg bottle in my Nitto stainless cages there are stains from the contact, so I'm wondering does stainless steel also stain shoes, or is that ONLY with the Ti? Stainless is not as bad as Ti but does mark shoes as well. I certainly could wrap it with something - handlebar tape, rim tape, cork, twine if I had 40 minutes or so to spend. There are even some costlier leather options for those so inclined. I resist as I like the all metal look. Re: [RBW] Whenever I see a photo of Grant's bikes, I want to clean them!
I don't ride much in rain or mud, so my bikes get dirty mostly with dust (8-9 annual rainfall here in high desert NM), and while I keep the drivetrains very clean, I give them a bath only once or twice a year (unless I get caught in rain). But baths are easy: put stand by hose, put bike in stand, half fill bucket with warm, soapy water, place near bike in stand. Taking hose firmly in grip, turn on spigot and gently spray loose dirt from bike. Firmly grasp large, soft bristed brush in dominant hand. (I use a brush that comes with those cheap, plastic brush-plus-dustpan combos, with a smaller, stiffer brush for the smaller and dirtier nooks and crannies around the rear part of the drivetrain). Dip into warm, soapy water and lovingly swab every nook and cranny. Replace brush in pail. Do same with smaller brush for the cassette and intricacies of the rear derailleur. Once again grasp hose and spray soapy water off bike. Turn off spigot and coil hose for future use. Remove bike from stand and bounce twice to dislodge what water you can. Wheel back to garage and let dry. Once dry, lube all pivots with a good dry lube; do same with chain. Do not, I repeat, do not wax or buff with cloth -- that is unmanly and will only harm your psyche. Fixed gears, with one cog, one ring and one brake, are of course easier than messy, complicated derailleur bikes. I also end up riding in the rain just often enough to rinse things down. Maybe once a year or so i'l give a bike a proper cleaning and rebuild as needed, but that's it. [RBW] Re: Whenever I see a photo of Grant's bikes, I want to clean them!
One morning I arrived at RBW HQ slightly earlier than I had planned. It was before they openned. There were Mark, Robert and Vaughn, all three of them taking turns with the bucket and brush. They were brushing and chatting with a familiarity and nonchalance that reminds you of the glimpses of Grand Tour mechanics doing their daily routine. It definitely gave the impression that at least the three of them are habitual bike cleaners. [RBW] Re: Whenever I see a photo of Grant's bikes, I want to clean them!
I don't ride much in rain or mud, so my bikes get dirty mostly with dust (8-9 annual rainfall here in high desert NM), Northern Cali is pretty dry for about 9 months every year. I imagine GP's bikes have dust, not grime on them. Provided GP is doing a good job lubing the moving part (and I expect he is) dust will not pose much of a problem. On Jun 29, 9:54 am, PATRICK MOORE bertin...@gmail.com wrote: I don't ride much in rain or mud, so my bikes get dirty mostly with dust (8-9 annual rainfall here in high desert NM), and while I keep the drivetrains very clean, I give them a bath only once or twice a year (unless I get caught in rain). Re: [RBW] Remember those learning bikes in the Rivendell Reader? Success Story here
Fantastic--thanks for sharing that. We had a similar experience with our boy, who is now seven. He started out at four or so on a Skuut, which is the $89 version of the nice wooden bikes I first saw in the Riv Reader. The lack of steering lock is a real boon. He LOVED that thing! When he was five he graduated to a Trek Float which has easily removable cranks/pedals and 16 wheels. He rode it without the pedals for part of a summer. We picked up a Trail-a-Bike for free, and he wanted to go out every night on it for a week--learning the muscle movements for pedaling apparently. That Sunday he said I think I'd like to try the pedals. We set him up on our street, a very slight incline, and he took off and rode three miles with us on Bicycle Sunday! (The City closes Lake Washington Boulevard to cars on summer Sundays.) He spent the next days doing figure-8s in the alley, honing his new skills--just as your nephew did. It is exhilarating to see your kids make these leaps. There is nothing better than riding with a kid on a steep learning curve and having a blast discovering the exploring you can do in a bike. And Rivendell-connection: Many years ago, they reviewed some learning bikes that teach kids balance on wide tire bikes without training wheels and without pedals. The idea is that the kid learns to get the feel for the balancing process on a moving bike so that they experience the gyroscope effect but don't have their balance-feeling process interrupted by the training wheels. My nephew's experience: he had had some training wheel experience with its typical ineffectiveness. He then started to ride one of these learning bikes described above. After using the learning bike for a little while, one day (last Thursday specifically) he picked up a regular bike with pedals when no one was looking and decided to see if he could get the balance on that. He started doing it in the drive way, wobbly figuring it out himself, but certainly getting it up to speed and pedaling it on his own. My brother was in the kitchen cleaning up, looked outside and noticed what his son was doing. He excitedly grabbed the camera nearby, ran outside, and started filming. A day and a half later, my nephew was ready for the trail. One thing I love about all of this was that there was no coaxing or frustrating teaching from adults who want it so bad for their kid. Maybe they were lucky; maybe he's gifted, but I'm pretty sure the learning bike did the job for which it was designed. Thanks for reading. Re: [RBW] Whenever I see a photo of Grant's bikes, I want to clean them!
I've been getting really tolerant of slop, and it's gotten beyond just the cleanliness. My Ram is currently not only dirty, but the indexing (9-speed rear) seems a bit off, but I don't care enough to fix it. And I'm not putting it in friction mode either! What's going on is that the bike will stay in gear, but on the higher gears, the one-to-one correspondence between derailleur position and shifter position is not always consistent. But 9 speeds is so many that I tend not to care. It's in some gear, and I know I can get to the lower ones when I need to. Sometimes 4 clicks gets me back to the 3rd highest gear, and sometimes those same 4 clicks gets me to the 4th highest gear. I'll fix it later. Later has stretched on for a couple of months now. I still have a big gear range, and when I pedal, the bike goes. -Jim W. -Original Message- From: CycloFiend cyclofi...@earthlink.net Sent: Jun 29, 2010 12:35 PM To: rbw-owners-bunch@googlegroups.com Subject: Re: [RBW] Whenever I see a photo of Grant's bikes, I want to clean them! on 6/29/10 7:43 AM, Mojo at gjtra...@yahoo.com wrote: http://www.rivbike.com/assets/payloads/317/original_grim_three.jpg I think the above URL should be changed from grim to grime! Any slightly damp bit in the drivetrain attracts it. By this time of year, if the rollers of the chain are silver, I'm pretty happy. That side mung on GP's chainrings is pretty much visually equivilent to mine, and I've only ridden twice since the last scrubbing. I'm trying to be regular about soap brush scrubbing every 2-3 weeks, but that could mean as many as 15-20 rides. Yup. It¹s a piece of gravel picked up by the tire and rolled between the tire and the inner surface of the fender until it¹s spit out at the top. Perhaps you should try a smaller size toe clip??? The White pedals extend forward from the pedal spindle about 3/8 to 1/2 further than a traditional old Campagnolo Pedal. My recollection from riding across Colorado is that the western part is all at altitude (5,000 feet and up). NorCal (at least, the part near Sacramento that I live in) is about 50 feet above sea level. [RBW] Grant's excellent comments today
Check out today's post on the Riv website for Grant's comments on dependent vs independent variables in bike design. While he sorta apologizes for the tone, I find it quite direct and to the point. Look folks, here's the bits that matter the rest are the result. Makes sense to me. One of the most lovable features of Rivendell is the just the facts tone of so many of their published pieces. People occassionally ask me some dimension on my Atlantis. Other than the frame size, I don't know. I refer them to Riv's website if they want to agonize over seat tube angles. The bike does what it's supposed to do quite nicely. dougP -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. I'm rather surprised by your comment that you've never ridden your LongLow no-hands. I really don't get all the concerns about the geometry of Rivendells that are sometimes expressed on this, and other (e.g.i-BOB) forums. The geometries aren't all that different from some of the classic road bikes of the 1970-80's. Let me add another twist: none of my other six bikes (which I can no-hands) descend as confidently, therefore faster, than the Rivendell Longlow. Yes, the Longlow's tires are slightly wider but I suspect it has more to do with the low bottom bracket shell and perhaps the longer chain stays. I am building up a late 70s style race bike for fun. I am tempted to use sew ups, but given my complete lack of experience, stories such as yours have me thinking maybe not. Glad you are still with us and riding. Thank you. I'm still riding sew-ups on the Bertin, only now I make absolutely sure they are glued on properly. After every ride I clean and inspect the tires and rims. I think that tubular tires are as safe as clinchers If they are mounted correctly. The tire I rolled was not even glued on. It was a new tire I mounted without glue to stretch it, then two weeks later I forgot it wasn't glued. Not sure it's a store-bought. Look at the right lug, appears it's a tie down. Might be hissown version of the store bought one. [RBW] Re: Question Concerning External Bearings BB for triple
Well, external bearings are often marketed based on larger (stronger bearings) and, for lack of a better term, the wide stance that makes the BB stiffer. There's probably a weight savings, too. But for me the greatest advantage is that I can remove and reinstall the crank with a 5 mm allen wrench (also helps to have the little black wheel from the Park BBT-9 for the bearing preload, but that's not absolutely necessary). It would have been handy on this weekend's mini-tour when my old-fashioned cup-and-spindle type square taper BB cup was un- threading itself and I had to find a bike shop where I could borrow a 14 mm crank wrench, crank puller, pin spanner, and BB lockring tool (in my haste, I didn't bring these items as I brought only a much simpler tool kit that I usually use on bikes with external BBs). Fighting proprietary design issues is not how I would characterize it. Unless you have an FSA crank/bb, in which case it gets rather complicated. My 3 year old loves his like - a- bike balance bike and rides it everywhere. It is one serious machine it even has Schwalbe Big Apples. One additon that made him like it even more was a Honka Hoota horn. Rig content-- my 3 year old says when he is big he is going to get a blue A Homer Hilsen and pull me on it. Dan Abelson St. Paul MN On Monday, June 28, 2010, James Warren jimcwar...@earthlink.net wrote: I had three great rides this weekend: 1) Halfmoon Bay (in California) down to the Tunitas Creek climb 2) A loop around San Luis Obispo 3) the absolute best-of-all: a ride with my brother and his 5.8-year-old son on the Santa Clara bike path. It was flat and was probably about 6 miles total. (We rode by the Great America roller coasters.) Here is why it was the best ride: My nephew had learned to ride the day before. He spent Friday morning learning to negotiate a complicated loop near his house, and every once in a while had spontaneous pure-joy outbursts like, It's great to ride without training wheels! This is the best! and I love donuts! After all that training, we raised the bar by going out on the public use trail. He got really good at holding his course and stayed to right and learned to pass people on the left (using his bell) and he had the best time. I had to share and since the learning bike was in the RR, I found a loophole to share with this list! -Jim W. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. Re: [RBW] Remember those learning bikes in the Rivendell Reader? Success Story here
I, too, am a big believer in Skuuts. All three kids have used 'em so far, you can flip the frame upside down to fit smaller kids, and they make learning a big kid bike a breeze. I did still have to take off the pedals when I moved the kids up to real bikes (they handle a bit differently), but once they got used to the different center of gravity, steering and whatnot, it was literally five minutes learning to pedal and they were off. Number two of three started riding a bike without training wheels at 3.5 that way (youngest so far!). What was really rewarding recently is helping a friend of my oldest learn to ride a bike in a similar fashion. I yanked the pedals and training wheels from her bike, lowered the seatpost as far as it would go, then my oldest was coaching her through the finer points of scooting along with your feet and learning to balance. It was incredibly rewarding seeing my son pass on something that he had learned. I felt like a star parent that day for sure. As far as brands, I can vouch for the Skuut being pretty durable, surviving a few hand me downs and extended loans to other kids. I figure that the two we have will have gone through at least three kids each by the time number four (due any day now) graduates from one. Anyway, balance bikes are awesome. If you have young kids, get 'em one. If you have friends or relatives with young kids, buy 'em one. --dlloyd -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. And clean drivetrain can certainly be a range. :^) In these parts (north of SF), and pretty much up and down California, we start getting mid-summer fine dust on every trail that is pretty pervasive. Of course this says alot more about me than Grant. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] Re: Grant super slick Camera strap!
Camera and strap specs: Camera: Zeiss Ikon. Camera fiends may also be interested to know that I own and shoot Cosina-Voigtlander Bessa L, Bessa R, and Leica M4-P. The lens on the camers is Voigtlander 40/1.4. The straps is homemade from two pieces of 3/4-inch webbing. The one around my neck is non-elastic nylon; the one around my chest is elastic. Both are tied to the camera's O-rings, with no hardware. This rig sits close, doesn't bounce, gives perfect access, and packs away neatly into a small camera case when I gotta do dat. For the record, I am an enthusiastic but lousy photographer. The decent shots you see on the home page are culled from hundreds of flops! But on I forge, resolute! [RBW] Re: brass fenders on orange Hillborne? thumbs up or down?
Thanks all for the thoughts and votes. Tell you what, though... turns out I'm less interested in how things look than I thought. That is, I really do like the look of aluminum, stainless steel, and brass fenders (and the more I thought about it, the more I thought the brass fenders would be a nice thing to see on an orange Hillborne, but maybe even better on a blue Hilsen... but still...) BUT every time I think about a curb or even a deep rut wall catching my fender and basically ruining it or at least requiring some realignment to restore its glory, I think... wow those chromoplastic fenders are wonderful! And, the more I think about it, it seems like it would be *fun* to put on the metal fenders; I'm not particularly handy but have vast stores of patience. And I kind of geek out on doing things like putting fenders on; I actually think I'd enjoy futzing around with them 'til I got them to be the way I wanted. But then I think back to the actual function of the chromoplastic fenders, with the double-stay arrangement that allowed to use the fender as a saddlebag support for days until I had time/inclination to put on a rack. I bet that wouldn't be something I'd want to do with a metal fender (or even a single-stay chromoplastic Berthoud). So for now I've decided to stick with the SKS chromoplastic 50mm fenders. I'm not closing the door on trying other things; after all, VO fenders are really not break-the-bank expensive, should I wish to give them a try. Even the brass ones aren't that expensive, and doing my own drilling sounds intriguing. But for now, it's chromoplastic SKS. With Sackville or Nigel Smythe mudflaps, of course. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] double-top-tube hillborne sighted in wild
Actually, in the wilds of my garage. I think it's snoozing in there. I'll try to sneak up on it and get a few pictures over the next few days. I understand they may be a little twitchy. But that shouldn't be a problem with this one yet; it's got no wheels! Even I should be able to sneak up on it.
