[RBW] Re: Rivendell as a beater bike?
Or like my wife, you could get a new, lugged steel, 6 speed Raleigh with metal headbadge, fenders, basket, kickstand, chainguard and skirtguard, and even a passenger seat w/foot-pegs in lieu of a rear rack for $120 (if you live in Thailand). Pics: http://www.flickr.com/photos/25150...@n08/4811164801/ I was dead-set against buying it, because it seemed too cheap, but it has held up very well for 1.5 years of almost daily commuting and the occasional ride to dinner with me as the captain and my wife on the back seat. The lugs are the crudest you'll ever see, the fork is a unicrown and an ugly one at that, the rear drum brake is a joke, especially combined with the plastic brake levers (but the stamped metal front sidepull works well), and the indexed shifting requires overshifting to get into certain gears (but at least it's easy to do with the thumbshifter). The nipples are plated steel and have started to rust (I just WD40 them on occasion), and the cranks, seat post, hubs, and bars are steel as well. The tire sidewalls cracked all around the first year because the tubes kept loosing air and my wife would ride it with 15-20 psi or so rather than dealing with the stock Woods valves or asking me to pump up her tires, but the tires are still going anyway. The paint started out as a metallic turquoise but has faded to a much nicer bluish silver from 1.5 years of tropical sun exposure at her work. Triple or quadruple the price, spend a little more on frame finishing and paint, and throw on slightly better components (like the $10 Dia Compe brake levers from VO) and maybe some aluminum parts to save a little weight, and you'd have a great bike! There is a LightSkin version of the BAs that shaves 200g off each tire, due to folding bead and lighter sidewall, and thus they should be even cushier in addition to being lighter. I wonder if the 50mm Big Apples (LiteSkin) fit, since acc. to rivbike.com they measure 44.5mm (presumably on the Riv-standard Synergy rim). Has anyone tried them? For mostly dirt, I put on 42mm IRC Mythos XC Pro Slicks (a true 42mm wide on Synergies), which are great off road and a bit buzzy on road, though I ride both 35mm Paselas and 33 Jack Browns off-road if the majority of the ride is on pavement. I say that because I just got the non-TG 35mm Paselas (a true 35mm on Synergies) and think they are as fast rolling as the 33mm Jack Brown Greens (also without the puncture protection strip). Manny, Check out Carlsbad and Cardiff. I think the Cardiff one is called San Elijo. I stayed there. Great breakfast spot named Pipes across PCH. And great body-surfing. You're going to have a great ride. -Jim W. p.s. Also, if you like donuts, VG's donuts in Cardiff is really good. For pizza, Pizza Port just down the way in Solana Beach. And my favorite coffee lounge (probably anywhere) is Java Depot in Solana Beach. I lived in Solana Beach in college from 88 to 92, the golden age of a certain bike company that many of us know. I scraped together $550 and bought the '91 MB-4 (the lugged, Ritchey Made in Japan one!) What a deal! Lacking a car, I got around quite a bit on that bike in my last year of college. Trips to Java Depot, me on my MB-4 and my bro on the MB-3 of the same year, his purple, mine rich red. Heavenly! Oh Manny, back on topic. If you are so inclined, throw some discs into the panniers and go to the Disc Golf Course in Balboa Park. Fun time. And if you burn up the daylight down there like I did, you can just take the Coaster train back north to Encinitas, with your bike securely held by velcro. -Original Message- From: manueljohnacosta manueljohnaco...@hotmail.com Sent: Jul 20, 2010 3:50 PM To: RBW Owners Bunch rbw-owners-bunch@googlegroups.com Subject: [RBW] bike campsites near san diego? Manny, Don't infer from my message that Carlsbad and Cardiff are the two that will get you two nights from LA to SD. They are near each other, so they would be two options for you for the San Diego night. Further north for the previous night, I'm not sure where you go - maybe Doheney, which is in Capistrano Beach. [RBW] Re: 650b vs. Big Apples
I guess what I'm wondering is if I want a Big Apple-ish smooth ride quality, is a 650b conversion gonna give it to me, or should I go all the way and get a 29er frame? As I say above, I mounted 700x60 BAs on a custom touring frame. My bike was not a 29er - BAs fit the Riv Atlantis as well. I have also ridden a 650b frame with Hetres. My road frame, though wide enough to fit BAs was custom speced for 700x32 tires. The added size of the BAs made the bike higher than I liked. The ride was cush and did not seem terribly slow to me. I am not a fast rider in any event. The Hetre equipped 650b frame did not put me up as high as the 700 BA frame. The Hetres are very cush tires. The ride was livelier than my 700 BA frame - but then the bike was designed for event rides, not self supported touring. I can not say unequivocally that Hetres allow faster riding. They are lighter, more narrow tires than the BA. All else being equal, if I were on a beach or a gravel or pot hole filled road, I would rather the BAs. Otherwise, Hetres are great. Before doing the conversion, you are going to want to be sure your bike will fit a Hetre. Hetres may not be BA width, but are still big tires. [RBW] Re: Tires for Sam Hillborne
Thanks for the advice so far. Put the Marathon Supremes back on the Hillborne last night. Unfortunately, noted a sidewall abraison on one tire. Not big, but it is bulging. Rode it to work today. Maybe not confident enough for this weekend. Strange as there seems to be no injury. Just threads breaking where the reflective strip overlaps itself. Must have rubbed it up against something. Re: [RBW] Re: 650b vs. Big Apples
Note that, all else being equal, a bigger wheel will give you a smoother ride and roll faster, so a 622 BA wheel does not lose as much to a smaller but lighter 584 wheel with a more supple tire than otherwise might be the case. The overall diameter of an inflated 60 mm BA is indeed 29 inches. Further, a 35 mm 622 wheel might indeed be as smooth as a 40 mm 584 wheel thanks to its bigger size. Note further that even the Liteskin version of the 60 mm 622 Ba weighs 800 grams. It is ponderous. So, the next question is, what sort of riding? BAs are overkill for anything except huge potholes, rough cobble, tree roots and sand. If you want off road, get a 29er. If you want rough but not torn up pavement, the next question is: How fat a 622 tire can your current frame accept? If it can take a 35, then why bother with a 40 mm 584? What you gain in width you lose in diameter. AFAICT, the sole advantage of 650b is putting reasonably fat tires on a 622 frame that can take only sub 1 tires. [RBW] Re: 650b vs. Big Apples
I've had both. I originally had a 26in wheeled Allrounder that I later converted to 650B. Sold it. Years later, I now have a Surly LHT with 26x2.3 Big Apples. And I just bought a new-to-me Rivendell 650B with Hetres. Having gone back and forth, I'd say that the 650B spins up easier, carries momentum better, and has similar if not better cushion. The biggest draw back to the 26in wheels for me (totally subjective here!) is that they are slower to accelerate to speed and seemed to slow down as soon as I let off the gas. This is due in large part to the giant 2.3 inch Apples that I am running, but it was also my experience with the Conti Top Touring 1.75 and other tires. I think the 650B is just magic or something. I also sold my 29ers and now ride a 650B mountain bike. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] Quickbeam Aftermath
As a few folks know, my chain broke towards the end of Ron's Fixed-Gear Ride a couple weekends ago. http://www.flickr.com/photos/cyclofiend/4781439710 Since the Quickbeam was in fixed-gear mode, it dropped to the pavement and then wrapped itself quickly around the rear sprocket. Not something I'd encountered before - either in terms of breakage or result - but with a few years of riding fixed, that's the first time for either. I hit the brakes quickly, but the chain looped around and jammed up the rear wheel. I had to lead it out and give a good tug on the chain as I turned the wheel backwards. Finally had the gumption to scrub it down and take a look at the damage last night. It's definitely got some gouges, but I just wanted to publicly thank Grant for spec'ing the thick-n-meaty steel dropouts on the Quickbeam. http://www.flickr.com/photos/cyclofiend/4811478864 Not pretty, but plenty left to play with. Since I was going over the frame in minute detail, I snapped some more photos of the general condition after being ridden pretty regularly for a few years. http://www.flickr.com/photos/cyclofiend/sets/72157624541784930 (I know the topic has come up a couple of times - there's a pretty good image of chainring/chainstay/chainring bolt/bb lug clearance.) - Jim -- Jim Edgar cyclofi...@earthlink.net Cyclofiend Bicycle Photo Galleries - http://www.cyclofiend.com Current Classics - Cross Bikes Singlespeed - Working Bikes Whatever you do will be insignificant, but it is very important that you do it. I got real lucky once. Applying steadily increasing pressure twist movement, the grip popped off in one piece with minimal muck on the bar. The other times, even lately when I used Elmer's wood glue, my luck did not hold - rather the glue did. The grip broke apart leaving chunks on the bar. Took a long to clean. Bruce, For the record, if this were to happen when I am around, I will stop to help for sure. It is part of being in a group ride, I was taught. Re: [RBW] Re: who needs carbon? (healdsburg century ride)
Congrats Don, sounds like you were crankin'! I just did my first century in 15 years this weekend. It feels great, doesn't it? We had a '03 new Mini for five years, sold it almost a year ago and went car-free after a) our six-year old son getting too big for the back seat and b) getting completely frustrated by the cost of maintenance. :) Had to replace the clutch at 53,000 miles--just out of warranty--to the tune of $2,500. (A known issue, I found out later from my BMW motorcycle dealership.) Brake pad replacement was $1,200, because you have to replace rotors as well. It was a complete and utter blast to drive, and I'm glad we had the experience, but I would not buy another one. I'm happy to have motorcycles or bicycles with character, but I prefer my automobiles inexpensive and reliable. [RBW] Ms Foy for my wife
In a fit of spousal munificence, I am postponing plans to buy a Bombadil so that I can get my wife a Betty Foy. She's unlikely to turn into a long-distance rider, but hope I'll have her along for a few miles of store hopping and socializing (over flat ground). Your comments on these matters are much appreciated: 1) My wife has the long-legged, short-body proportions of many females, with PBH that's probably going to land in the low to mid-80s (a 58 cm frame) but an upper body that may be better suited to shorter virtual top tube (the 52 cm frame, which to my eye, has the more elegant tube angles). Any observations on the slack in the Betty Foy's two frame sizes (is frame size relatively less important with these bikes than with, say, the AHH/Saluki)? 2) She has a low tolerance for complicated shifters, and it's unlikely she will need a wide gear range _ but I'm not keen on 8-speed internal hubs. Any thoughts on whether an 8-speed cassette with single chainring in front can be set up to suit the needs of an occasional, inexperienced rider? -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. I'm in the process of setting up a Riv-mixte for my wife as well. She liked the black and gold, so she's getting an Yves Gomez. 1. I think she will find that with the Albatross bars the reach on the 58 will still be quite manageable. I'd urge you to get the 58. Speak with the folks at Riv, but that's my opinion. 2. A 1x8 or 1x9 can give you a magnificent range. Like a single 40 tooth ring on an 11-32 could have you covered for just about anything. Or, maybe you should set up the 24/40/chainguard setup that Keven put on the 'dream Bombadil'. She'll live in the 40, and move to the 24 ring only in extreme circumstances. Spring for Thumbies and indexing barcons. Nothing shifts easier, and that's still way cheaper and way lighter than an internal hub. [RBW] Re: Ms Foy for my wife
I have a beater/traveler bike set up with an 8 speed rear and a 42 up front (you can always go smaller). I take it to places with big hills with no problems and love the simplicity of 8 gears. Index the RD with a Barcon on Albatross bars and she'll have a great bike for what you mentioned in my opinion. On Jul 20, 11:52 am, MobileBill bud...@mindspring.com wrote: In a fit of spousal munificence, I am postponing plans to buy a Bombadil so that I can get my wife a Betty Foy. Another vote for San Clemente. I like it because it's about halfway between LA and SD. A little off the main drag, so it feels quieter than some other campgrounds. (Although the last couple of times I stayed there, I was startled awake by transients setting up camp in the middle of night.) Not sure where you would camp if you were to break up the trip into 2 nights. I don't know of any public campsites north of Doheney. [RBW] FS: Bridgestone XO Blaze Brake Levers and Dummy Levers
I have a set of Blaze brake levers and dummy levers (I have NO idea what you call these things) from a Bridgestone XO. The Blaze levers are in good but used condition. The hoods are good...one has a tiny tear starting at the bottom but it is not noticeable. One if the dummy levers is missing it's cover. I thought maybe someone might need these for a restro or just to retro up a newer set of moustache bars. I have no idea what these would be worth so lets say $15 shipped in the US for the whole batch. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] Timothy Lake S360
Got in a few hours ago from an epic sub 36hr overnight (S360). I know the first day was 80 miles or so and today was a bit more. It was my first bike camping trip of the year and I really enjoyed myself in spite of some cramps yesterday and the campgrounds being pretty loud although they did quiet down at dark. There are so many miles of epic Forest Service roads in the Mt Hood NF. I'm hoping that I'll make at least two more S36Os and maybe a two night mini tour before summer is over. My Hilsen was great. The first day it felt odd as I hadn't ridden it loaded since last summer's tour. Today the bike felt fine and tracked straight and true on descents with no shimmy or anything. I did bring my tent but didn't use the rainfly and probably just could have gone without it as the weather was nice and the mosquitos weren't bad. Just measure how high you have to elevate one end to make it level. rise over run. Thus, a 1-in-10 incline requires a 70-inch gear.” (In other words, on a 10 % slope, with all your weight on the pedal, and a 70-inch gear you would just be stationary. But in reality, if you pulled up on the handlebars, you could make a little progress. ) If I work things out correctly, a 15 % grade would be 1-in-6.67. Using the formula above, this would give a maximum usable gear of 7 X 6.67 = 46.7 gear inches. ( That’s the maximum usable gear, not that it would be a fun ride. ) I am not sure how people know the grade of a hill either, other than just by eyeballing it. But I can say, in my experience, riding a single-speed bike will gradually make you a better climber, so that after maybe six months or a year, you can go up hills quicker and easier than you would have done previously in a lower gear. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] OT: Kickbike Review
For what it's worth, I thought I'd share a quick review of my experience test riding one of the Kickbikes that Grant has blogged about. A few weeks ago I went with a friend of my who wanted to try them out. She used to do a lot of riding but an ear problem that has led to bouts of vertigo has kept her off the bike. She thought this might be a reasonable alternative. The first thing I'll say is that the only real resemblance between bike riding and a Kickbike is that they both have the word bike in them. Using the Kickbike is essentially like riding a skateboard with a bike wheel. That being said, it's a killer workout. I think it was designed in Finland, I'm guessing as off-season training for cross- country skiers. To use it, you kick a few times with one foot, switch feet and repeat. It didn't take me long to discover I'm significantly weaker on my non-dominant side. You can get it with front wheels in both 700c and 26 inch. I think it would be possible to put a rack on the front; you can also put a basket on the front. Legally I don't know if it is considered a bike and whether you could use it on the road. We test rode a couple of models. The one my friend bought is poorly made and comes with low quality components. They are introducing new models that cost a few hundred more and hopefully have better components. If I had a decent place to ride one, I'd consider picking one of these up cheap off Craigslist or Ebay. But for me, I'll save my money for another bike. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. I will be at Carpinteria State Beach on this Sat night at the Hiker/ Biker site. I couldn't tell when you would be passing thru from your map. If it works you could join us for dinner and a campfire. we are heading back down the coast and to Moorpark Sunday am. ~Mike~ On Jul 20, 9:45 pm, cyclotourist cyclotour...@gmail.com wrote: *Try this one: http://tinyurl.com/2wk33bb :-)* Wish I could meet up with you, but looks like the schedules just aren't going to match up :-( On Tue, Jul 20, 2010 at 8:46 PM, manueljohnacosta manueljohnaco...@hotmail.com wrote: yikes this is the route http://maps.google.com/maps?f=dsource=s_dsaddr=209+State+Street+San...
