[RBW] Re: OT: NYC hotels
I go to NYC several times per year. I always stay at the Cosmopolitan Hotel: http://www.cosmohotel.com/ It is in downtown Manhattan literally above a subway stop. Most of the other subways that go through Manhattan and into Brooklyn are minutes away. There are restaurants and stores (including a pretty cool bike store that sponsors a lot of local bike shows and swaps) are up and down the street. Brooklyn Bridge is a 5 minute walk away. [RBW] Walnut Ride Report
Yesterday made my first walnut run of the year. One of the things love doing on my long rides is finding wild things that are good to eat, California is the state of fruits and nuts after all. I know of a tree near the top of one of my favorite loops, that seems to always come ripe a bit early. This year I am running a bit behind with the new baby and all and thought might be a bit late. Those of you that made it up to Ventura earlier this year for the SoCal Rivendel Appreciation ride will recognise some of the views. The ride starts out on the local river/rail trail for 7 or 8 miles then the rout hooks east for 8 or 9 mile of beautiful but hot dirt climbing. The views are incredible, and the persisting fog this year had cut loose to clear blue skies. Depending on the line of sight you could see the Channel Islands, well past Lake Casitas and haze free views of all the mountains above Ojai. The Roadeo performed fantastically. Around mile 5 of the climb I was taking a water break and thinking how well my berthoud saddle had been breaking in, it was great out of the box, but seemed to be softening up, to the point where I was thinking of playing with the adjusting screw. Closer inspection during the break revealed that the attachment screws were actually working loose. Thankfully had the heavy Alien tool with me and it had the little Allen key required to tighten them. Todays project is locktight. That was the closest thing to a mechanical had all day. As I was climbing and gaining on the tree, could not help but notice how many other types of trees had gone to fruit and already started dropping. I thought for sure I was going to be too late this year. Then, after mile 7, and almost to the point of asking are we there yet out loud there it was, fruit still on the tree. It has been a cold year and I was actually a bit early. I was able to gather up about 5 lbs or so of green nuts before I ran out of bag space, walnuts in an Acorn. If you have never had raw walnuts it is a bit of an acquired taste, but they are fantastic, 2 or 3 feel like a satisfying snack, they are tender and more bitter than what you buy at the store, soo good. With the catch in the bags it was time to summit and make the decent. The extra load was noticeable for sure but not as big a problem as my lack of enough water. The summit came soon and then for the best descent in the county, sorry no pictures there I was not stopping to smell the roses, it was time to get the bottle filled. The rest of the ride home was beautiful, I took a new route, for me, along Creek Road, nice but fast traffic. Great ride and a much needed break away from the day to day stuff, next up pomegranates and maybe prickly pear.. I picked up a used (BSA) Kelty Gunnison from Ebay for less than $100. Not the lightest, but light enough. Packs small. Free standing, sets up fast, rainfly with two small vestibules for gear, plenty of mesh for breatability, two doors and has built in pockets and a mesh shelf. I use a cheap blue tarp for a footprint. [RBW] Re: Super-spongy brakes on my AHH - any help?
The Silver/Tiagra lever combo has been working well. It's hard to diagnose the problem online, of course, but there's nothing inherent 'bout the 'bo that ought to make anything funky. There are differences in feel flex among brakes, but the differences are by faaa most noticeable when your attention is concentrated on the brake--- when you're not actually riding the bike using it, but when your feet are on the floor and you're squeezing levers harder then you ever do during a ride, and looking for flex-action. This is a common, and understandably reasonable-seeming way to compare or test brakes, but it tends to distort differences. Centerpulls that feel good during use often fail the SBVT (static bike visual test). But the Silvers generally pass the SBVT with fairly flying colors. If the cable housing and cables are good, and the spring is good (it is), and it's lubed where it hooks onto the inside of the brake arm where you can't see it unless you look there, and if there aren't any kinks, then the action should be plenty OK. Lube the spring where it hooks onto the arm. The hard way isn't too hard, but involves unhooking it, applying grease or lanolin, and rehooking it. The easy way is spraying with W4D, as my granny used to call it, and it came up in an extraordinary number of conversations, considering she was in her '80s and '90s when it did. Lube the spring. And while you're at it, spray the spring with Boeshield to keep the rust at bay. If the Boeshield drips down into the W4D area in that groove, no harm done. [RBW] Re: Super-spongy brakes on my AHH - any help?
Haven't read the whole thread, but I second this comment, with the additional note that i find it actually very difficult to square cable housing well with a file. Use a dremel tool or grind stone to do the job really well. Sheldon brown has some good photos of well-squared housing ends for reference. Gernot On Sep 14, 7:00 am, Doug Van Cleve dvancl...@gmail.com wrote: Hey Adam. I've gotta think plenty of Silver/Tektro calipers are in use with Shimano aero levers. I would suspect the cable housing. Are the ends cut cleanly and squared off, with a file if necessary? Are you using metal housing end caps where they fit or at least the plastic ones? I would recommend using some so-called compressionless housing, kind of a brake/derailleur hybrid. SRAM and Jagwire both make it, probably others do as well. Also, you want the pads reasonably close to the rims, I'd say 2-3mm clearance. HTH, Doug P.S. The Tektro/Silvers are on the flexy side due to their length, but should still give reasonable performance if set up right. On Mon, Sep 13, 2010 at 2:21 PM, Adam Kimball adamfkimb...@gmail.comwrote: Wow, I'm not having much luck in the brake department with my new ride. I set up my Hilsen with Silver brakes and found that they simply wouldn't stop me - I could have both levers to the tape and still roll. So, I changed to Paul Racer's on the advice of my LBS and found that the situation really isn't much better. Here is where my thinking is at: * I'm seeing a lot of flex in the brakes themselves and at the cable hangers. The rear brake is worse than the front (as is usually the case) but I suspect the inline barrel adjuster and the rear cable hanger (light-weight aluminum one that hangs of the seat-post bolt) is flexing too much. * I've brought the yokes up pretty high - I can get them higher, but not much. So, I'm not certain this is the problem. * Brake-pads are the standard black Kool-Stops and I would have to assume they are not the problem * My Dura-Ace brake levers are incredibly squishy. This is one piece of the equation that is common to both setups (Silvers Racers). The Racer brakes are indeed short-pull so those road levers should be fine - but I've suspected them before. Another mechanic took a look at the brakes and road the bike today. He agreed that the brakes are massively under performing. He thought that a travel agent might help to pull more cable. He also wanted to re-cable since I cut the rear cable a little short. He wanted me to find out if Paul makes a stiffener that attaches to the calipers. Does anyone have any other ideas for me? I don't have another AHH to ride, so it is hard for me to know just how bad my brakes are. Keven at Rivendell didn't think the Racer's are much better than the Silvers for braking (and he has a pair on his Hilsen) and so he wondered what the other problem might be. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Adam -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] Re: Super-spongy brakes on my AHH - any help?
there's nothing inherent 'bout the 'bo that ought to make anything funky Using my Grant decoder ring, I'll guess that 'bout the 'bo translates to about the combination. FWIW I bought the OP's Silvers, so any advice about how to make the Silvers work better are pretty much moot. I'm confident the Silvers will work fine for me. I'll be using Tektro R200 levers. The Campy copy ones that get branded Cane Creek. Another aspect that has not come up is the rim. I assume the OP is using Velocity rims like most of us, but there are rims that have pretty subpar braking performance. We've all gotten on a bike (usually wet weather) where the brakes are so useless that it almost feels like the brakes accellerate you. Again, that's usually in wet weather, but the point I'm making is that the rims matter, and they are another constant in the OP's experiments. Re: [RBW] Re: Tent suggestions
I own a 2-person Timberline that I've used about twenty times in the past six years. Three of those were multi-day bicycle camping trips. It is a great tent. It has seen quite a bit of rain and wind and performs well with the fly, is durable, sets up and packs down nicely, and I just like the traditional look of it. My only complaint would be lack of headroom at the sides, due to its shape, otherwise hard to find a better value. Oh, and it's a beautiful shade of green. I often camp near heavy vegetation and it feels good to take in the surroundings and not have a bright orange and grey Buckminster-like hedron distracting from the scenery. [RBW] Re: Super-spongy brakes on my AHH - any help?
FWIW I've found it's not necessary to have a perfectly square cable end. I've driven myself nuts trying to do it, but then realized as long as the cut is clean, the angle doesn't have to be perfectly square. This is based on my many trials and errors. The most useful tool I have is one I'm not sure the name of it is. It's essentially a pick that I use to inset into cable ends after cutting and filing, to ensure it's fully open. As filing is great and all, but it can compress the metal inside the cable, where it's unreachable, hence using the pick I wedge it in there and gently ream it in back to proper size. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. I had a b17, b17 special, and a team pro. Replaced the team pro with another b17s. Comfort difference was slight, and I believe mostly due to lack of break-in due to thicker leather, but the pro didn't have saddle bag loops. This is based on the B17, but even though it was sprung it wasn't nearly as comfortable as my standard B17. Perhaps the it was thicker leather? I don't know, I've toiled over this for years. Same goes for my B17 Special. It's awesome looking and still very comfortable, but not quite as plush as the good ol' honey B17... And I've been riding a standard B17 on my mountain bike now for years, and will NEVER go back. In fact I'll soon be heading out to Colorado for a few days of mountain biking... I will likely rent a bike, but regardless I'll take along a B17 for sure! BB On Sep 12, 3:28 am, Rene Valbuena valbu...@ix.netcom.com wrote: I also prefer the B17 over the Pro on bikes with handlebar on level or lower than the saddle. The Pro model seems to be stiffer perhaps not because it has thicker leather but because of its narrower design. I don't have a Swallow but I think the reason it is more pleasant on the butt is that it is longer than the Pro and B17. On B17s, I noticed that the standard model has a little more flex or bounce that I find more pleasant. But I cannot resist the allure of the bigger copper rivets on the champion special model. So I have both the standard and the champion special. I'm surprised to see the comments to the effect that the Pro is flatter than the B17. I have a couple of each and find them all to have that distinct hammock shape. The key differences, as far as I can tell, are that the Pro is a narrower at the back and is made of thicker leather. (I have one Pro that is at least 15 years old. I periodically mount it on a bike and use it for a few hundred miles, then take it off again, because I just can't get it to break in. I figure it's got at least 3000 miles on it at this point, plus several different (increasingly radical) attempts at softening it. It's still hard as a rock and looks/feels exactly like it did out of the box.) Overall, I just haven't had great success with Brooks no matter what I do, for exactly the reasons outlined by James: if I get the rear section level enough so that I'm not sliding onto the nose, the nose is angled so steeply up that it digs into me. Lowering the nose just causes the rear section to angle downward, sliding me back onto the nose. Arg. Even with a two-bolt post, there is no happy medium. For some reason, though, the Velo-Orange saddles don't do that to me, even though they have the hammock shape too. Go figure. It's just too bad the V/O saddles aren't quite as nicely put together as the Brooks... [RBW] Re: B17 vs Team Pro... any direct comparison wisdom?
Thomas, I have the Team Pro on a Gios, a B-17Ti on a Serrotta and another B-17Ti on my touring rig. I used to ride the B-17 standard(steel rails) and still have a B-17N on my Holdswoth which will be going to the bench soon as it doesn't feel quite as nice. Here's my take. Team pro is very nice but was way harder to break in, leather is thicker and for me not as comfy as the B-17 standard from the begining. I had the B-17 standard on one bike an I came across a B-17Ti for new at less than half price so I bought it and switched it out. I noticed an instant increase in comfort and less road vibration transfer. So I bought another Ti at full price and stuck it on my gofast bike. Same thing. Smoother riding. There they stay and the standard although a great saddle is on the bench. My experience may be different than others. The team pro is a great saddle but for me the B-17Ti is bliss. [RBW] 3 days in Gifford Pinchot National Forest.
So no big tour this year but I did get in a 3 day ride in Gifford Pinchot NF with my friend and coworker John. The first two days of the trip basically retraced last year's Gifford excursion with exception of much better weather. On the third day we dropped down from Lake Takhlakh to Trout Lake where we turned West and took two FS Rds (60 and 65) back to Carson and then Hwy 14 back to Stevenson where John's car was parked. I rode my Hilsen which was okay but required attention when reaching for a bottle or changing gears as it could easily get quite wobbly. Oh, and on the first day, heading towards the base of Old Man Pass a couple passed by us and one of them was riding a large Bombadil. They were the only other cyclist we saw on the trip. [RBW] Re: Watch those kickstand plates! and question about S and S couplers
I own a coupled Rambouillet. I bought it used with the couplers already installed. I love the bike for general riding and just completed my second 500 mile unloaded tour with the Rambouillet. Patience required to pack, build up, dismantle, ship. But what a way to go! Not sure about a Brompton on a real bike tour. [RBW] Re: Tent suggestions
I'm also a enthusiastic user of the Sierra Designs Flashlight tent. It's quite light (3 lb 14 oz.) and compact, easy to set-up and provides adequate privacy and shelter for most three-season camping. I think it's one of the best tents for cycle camping. The only caveat is that it is rather close quarters for two people, but still usable. Finally, it's a rather inexpensive tent, some of the more expedition oriented tents are frankly too expensive and overkill for my usage. Re: [RBW] Re: Roadeos and Downtube Shifters
Off-Rivendell-topic, but I'd love to see a photo of the Porter. Dave is an ABQ cycling fixture and has done a couple of frame modifications for me: I am tempted to have him build me a no-holds-barred, light fancy fixed gear for 622 wheels (all my good fixies are Rivendell 571s or 559s) out of 853 or some other cutting edge steel tubing. He is quite reasonable, from my brief inquiries, starting at about 1,200 or so. He showed me a mid-size road frame he recently built that he claims weighs 2.5 lb or so. His tt frames won records 20 years ago or so. On Wed, Sep 15, 2010 at 7:20 AM, JimD rasterd...@comcast.net wrote: I have a ~ 20 year old Dave Porter custom that uses down tube shifters. For me the reach to down tube shifters on the larger Riv would be somewhat awkward compared to the 60 cm Porter. I find the bar ends to be functionally terrific on the Riv To my eye down tube shifter trump bar ends, aesthetically speaking. [RBW] Re: My new Rodeo
I'm with you...I must be a weakling too. I can't go up the foothills of Mt Rainier without a small inner ring, especially after I am all tired out. The only compact double I would consider would be perhaps a 46x30 or a 44/42x28 coupled with a 12-32,34 or 36 cog set. I own a classic steel race bike from the 80's with a 42x52 and a 13-23 six speed. At 21 pounds I cannot ride it on anything but gentle rollers and relatively flat ground. It makes no difference to me that the shifting is simple and crisp and I don't think it makes me any faster than my normal all rounder style bike. Unless one is very lean and very in shape, I honestly don't think there is much of a reason to ride with a double and certainly not on a bike that will take you to unknown areas due to its versatility and fender-ability. Three cheers to those that can make compact doubles work..years of sit down bench work and too many calories have done wonders to limit my climbing abilities. I need a wide range triple and I am not afraid to admit it !!! : ) On Sep 12, 9:43 am, Anne Paulson anne.paul...@gmail.com wrote: Anne, a 34/36-48/50 double with a 12-27 cassette yields a low gear in the mid-30s inches and lets you keep the crispsimple-shifting short cage derailers.
