My best strategy is to ride my own pace in brevets. Re: [RBW] Advice for brevet
I'm not sure what part of the country you are in but I would fender that Roadeo or take a fendered bike in January. My frequent strategy for riding brevets in non-home territory was to find some local to shadow or follow especially when it got dark. If you wait til later wen dark approaches, you will be around similar speed riders. I also had trouble reading cue sheets in the dark with bifocals. A light on helmet caused tilt of head putting reading view too high for the magnifying area. I ended up using a small pinch light on an elastic shoe string hanging hanging around my neck. Most of the time it rode inside my jersey but was easily retrieved when needed. On Dec 27, 2010, at 6:51 PM, Anne Paulson wrote: Hi all. The two routes we seem to gravitate towards are the Kokopelli and Stagecoach trails. Personally I am leaning toward the latter. I've read a few different and varying accounts of the terrain on the 70 mi Stagecoach trail from Flagstaff to the Grand Canyon. It seems that doing it one way in 2 days would be comfortably achievable and the more ambitious plan would be to go out and back in 2. We would be camping, and self supported. Most preferably I would like to take 4 days to go out and back so we could enjoy the sights and camping as much as the riding. We have done part of the Kokopelli heading from Fruita CO to Moab UT so it's a bit more familiar. [RBW] Re: Danish Always-On Frictionless Dyno
Five years ago, we were the sole US supplier of these - it was the first product we sold at Hiawatha. The original SL100 model works great and I know of several that are still going after 5 hard years, Minneapolis winters, etc. The drawback of this model is that when the bike stops, the lights stop. Later models integrated a capacitor to keep the lights flashing for several minutes at stops. Unfortunately, the capacitor lights were much less reliable, and often stopped working after a short time. I hope that Reelight has since addressed this issue, but we have since stopped stocking them for several reasons. They work by induction. Spoke magnets pass close to a coil in the light mechanism. This induces a current to light the LED. The capacitor models store a charge that is then run through a circuit that either flashes the LED at a constant frequency or powers the LED steadily (non-flashing), depending on the model. It should be noted that these are be seen lights, not on par with any of the lights that actually illuminate the road. And since they are mounted low at the wheel axle, they are probably not at optimal high to be seen. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] Re: Danish Always-On Frictionless Dyno
I used a set for a while (purchased from Jim). It was a non-Rivendell bike. They worked okay. Even in bad weather. The problem was removing the wheel. The light has a tendency to smack into the magnet. Makes re-mounting a wheel more of a chore. Especially in the cold, in winter. And on semi-horizontal drop-outs they are even more fiddly to install. Still see them on a few bikes in the Twin Cities. Like Jim said, they are a on and forget about be seen light. But have had no impulse to add them to any current bike. Re: [RBW] Marque-specific Rides
I wouldn't be surprised to hear of Colnago rides. There seems to be a lot of brand loyalty among the three Colnago riders I know. In '91, when I got my Bridgestone, I was one of about 6 siblings and friends who got one. From about '89 to '91, each of us got to a point where we wanted a mountain bike. And when we each saw how good the others' Bridgestones were, we each ended up making the same choice. So we had a few group Bridgestone rides, even though we didn't plan it that way. (Mine was the stealthy MB-4: as good as the lower numbers with its lugged Ritchey tubing and parts as good as the MB-2 and a lower Q Sugino crank! I remember the catalog in 1991 said We LIKE this bike.) http://www.sheldonbrown.com/bridgestone/1991/pages/bridgestone-1991-16.htm On Dec 28, 2010, at 12:10 PM, Jon Grant wrote: Do owners of other marques do this? Re: [RBW] Marque-specific Rides
There aren't a lot of organized rides that do the type of riding that we do on these rides - mixed surface, taking advantage of the different models' versatility. It's interesting that within typical mainstream road-only group rides, the distinctiveness of the bikes offered by different makers is less than the distinctiveness of the various Rivendells that you will see on rbw-owners-bunch rides. That distinctiveness of the different Rivendell models is complemented by the variety in the other models and brands that attendees bring on these rides (Nishikis and Treks and Schwinns, etc, all made to work in unique and sometimes creative ways.) These types of rides are enjoyable on suitable bikes from any maker. But the key word is suitable. The fact that so many Rivendell models are suitable says great things about the company. -Jim W. Well it seems like forever, but in reality it was very quick in arriving. Even hasd a Christmas Tree and Candy Cane drawn on the box. The bike went together flawlessly and the first ride was great. The Albatross bars are going to take some getting used to I think. The basket and grocery bag are great .. which was actually suprising to me. The more I look and read I'm seriously looking at the E3 symetrical light now instead of the Edulux like I have on my ahh. Still hate the tail light but more light out front sure seems like the way to go. Got the 700x50 big apples instead of the fat franks because I was worried about dirt... started out with 55 psi, think I'll be dropping that slightly. Rando rides have very specific reflective gear requirements as well - a vest or Sam-Browne type reflective belt (I wear a reflective running vest myself) and reflective ankle bands - one on each ankle. A headlight and taillight, of course. I also have a Petzl e+lite on my helmet - enough light to read the cue sheet, and, should I be so unfortunate, fix a flat. There are lighting purists who say your rear light shouldn't blink. I don't mind if someone's blinks, as long as it is not a Dinotte in paint-melt mode. Extra socks. Extra gloves. If it is going to rain, you can't go wrong with another base layer. I ride with folks who bring an entire change of clothes. Would have come in handy on the Armageddon 200k (http://lynnerides.blogspot.com/2010/12/armageddon-200km.html) a couple weeks back, but all I had was a dry baselayer, dry socks, and weather resistant tights. All together now: Fender the Rodeo, fender the rodeo, etc. ad nauseam... Get the SKSs from Riv, or even better, the SKS fenders with Berthoud aluminum stays from Peter White. I have them on my Sam, love them: http://www.flickr.com/photos/25150...@n08/5185320523/ The 42mm fit great over Jack Browns. Lighter, longer, cleaner looking, no chance of snagging anything on the uncut SKS stays, and only marginally more expenive.
