[RBW] Re: bars for a simpleone?
I've had the WTB Dirt Drops on my Quickbeam since I got it in 2004. I would never change them, unless they broke. My online friends constantly changing their bars baffles me. I didn't like the Noodles that came with the QB, so I gave them away. I didn't like the (technomic and dirt drop) stems I tried either, until I put my old Salsa on. http://www.biketinker.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/11/quickbeam-nitto-e6-mount.jpg Midge bars are different. I have them on my mountain bike. They're similar and good, but if the WTBs broke, I'd probably try the Woodchipper or Ragley bars first. I like the narrow tops and steeply slanted hooks of the WTB, and the Midge has less of each. http://www.flickr.com/photos/philipwilliamson/5255420025/ I have moustache bars on another bike, and I like them well enough. Again, there's a narrow 'hoods' position, uber-wide leverage position, and a moderate cruising position. http://www.flickr.com/photos/philipwilliamson/3851077667/ So that's my vote. Flared drops or moustache bar, set up with an appropriate stem. The Simpleone is a singlespeed bike, and off- roadable, two situations where leverage matters. It's also a good road bike, where you might want to tuck your elbows in and just GO. Re: [RBW] bars for a simpleone?
I'm built similarly and love drop bars and can't get comfortable on anything else (I've tried them all, too). I find drops particularly useful with ss and fixed gears because these require, or can require, a wider range of power outputs, and different hand/arm/body positions favor different power outputs: as you notice when you get forward and low. What has your problem with drops been? I've found that saddle position is one of the keys to comfortable arms, neck and shoulders. [RBW] Re: bars for a simpleone?
I'm not a fan of drops, either. My arms are too short. On a singlespeed/fixed gear, I want something wide for leverage. If you go with a flared drop like the On One Midge, be aware that you will have to be stretched out and on the hooks to take advantage of the bars width when standing and stoping on the pedals! It is (if I recall correctly) must narrorwer at the brake hoods than a super-wide Nitto drop bar. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. I'm 6 feet (or a little less), 86 PBH (or a little more), thus not hugely different sizing than Bruce. [RBW] Re: bars for a simpleone?
My recently-acquired pre-owned Quickbeam came with 46cm Noodles. Originally, I was planning on switching them for moustache bars from another bike, but now I just can't bear to do it. The Noodles are so versatile - seems like I could do anything with them. Probably the only thing they're not good for is riding during the winter with big fat mittens. I find myself riding in the drops way more than I ever did in previous drop bar situations, but that also probably has something to do with having the bars up higher. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. Re: [RBW] bars for a simpleone?
I've got a canit-Rom in 59 and a Sam Hillborne in 56, and used to own a 52 Bombadil. The Rom and Bomba fit well at those sizes (Rom w. mustache bars, Bomba with bullmoose) and the Sam feels a bit too big (with bullmoose). Still trying to figure out how to make the Sam not feel like an oversized tank... don't think it's the bars on that one - probably the heavyish tires/wheels and I probably should have gone a size down, even though I have some standover clearance with the 56. I've also got pretty short arms/legs for my torso - that's probably why i haven't loved drops - e.g. to use them I'm stretched out over the bike too much. Thanks for all the advice and feedback from everyone - I think I'm leaning towards the Nitto Rando bar for the SimpleOne - e.g. splayed-out drops with a tighter bend so the drops are closer. Maybe with a dirt-drop stem... thanks, andrew On May 5, 2011, at 3:35 AM, Bruce Baker wrote: Just curious what's the frame size of your Rom and Hillborne? I'm the same height and PBH as you. I asked the mechanic at VO about the spacing and he said that for a 5mm difference, I could just install the wheel and clamp it down with the skewers. I was able to do this with no problem at all. It shifts fine, so I don't think the chainline is out of whack. Of course, YMMV. Steve The only thing to be aware of is that the face of the hub will force an alignment of the dropouts. The issue is mainly the change of stresses on the connection of the rear dropouts to the stays at the brazing. There's plenty of elasticity in the steel so that the stays will clamp down and/or spread back out (and if you've ever seen a steel frame being respaced, it's pretty amazing how far you have to bend it to change things.) If you _had_ to do it for a single trip or instance, I wouldn't worry about it particularly (with a steel frame of course). But, if you were going to on a regularly basis, it's probably not a bad idea to put a couple spacers in there. It's bone simple stuff. I wouldn't even worry about changing the axle. As far as the chainline - it's a 2 mm shift at most. I didn't worry about that at all. Just checked the limit screws and enjoyed the benefits of analog shifting. - J -- Jim Edgar cyclofi...@earthlink.net Cyclofiend Bicycle Photo Galleries - http://www.cyclofiend.com Current Classics - Cross Bikes Singlespeed - Working Bikes You must be the change you want to see in the world. [RBW] FS: Pashley Tube Rider Complete Bike, new post
I have this gorgeous Pashley Tube Rider Double Scoop in Pink/ Tourquoise Upgrades include: Nitto Periscopa stem, Nitto bars, mks touring pedals, shimano brake levers, cork grips, a suntour thumbshifter used in friction mode, and basket. I have the original twist shifter and grips as well as the original beach cruiser style bars. All will be included. This was the last one imported from the uk back in '10. I am not sure if these are available anymore state-side from a pashley dealer. I was told last year that the us distributer wasn't importing them anymore. perfect shape not a blemish to be found. no dents cracks etc. there are scuff marks here and there on the pedals and crank arms, just the normal wear. always stored indoors ridden about 1000 miles. wheels are true, everything works perfect. My wife doesnt really ride it much anymore, since she got a go-fast bike. $550 Bike only, shipping is extra, I got a quote on shipping via ups/ fedex says it will be around $80 to the east coast (depending on location could be cheaper), local pickup is also an option. perfect town bike. http://www.flickr.com/photos/willhrtn/sets/72157626556037328/ -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group.
