[RBW] Bombadil on the Trail
Had a chance to ride the Red Cedar Trail in Wisconsin this weekend between storms. Hot day, nice trail, great bike. http://www.flickr.com/photos/32306142@N07/5971411349/in/photostream Still having some issues with posts not showing up using the new format. [RBW] Re: Headset Issue
The OP's issue is exactly why I bought a lot of my own bike tools decades ago. Seems like the LBS's have gotten worse over the years, too, and I notice that many of them now employ part time kids. Can't necessarily fault 'em for that; I realize they don't make a lot of money. But if there are just some things that, if you want them done right, you more or less have to take the bull by the horns yourself. [RBW] Re: Headset Issue
This bike has been to two shops this month--the first one didn't even consider the headset (it was loose when they returned it) and failed to properly tune the drivetrain while charging me north of $100 for their recommended deluxe tune-up. Not happy. At the second shop where I bought the bike I should have given it a quick test drive and I'm sure the mechanic (not a part-time kid in this instance) would have got the adjustment right, just wish I would have caught it before I took the bike home. This does speak to the need to do it yourself so today I'm out hunting for the wrenches. I have every intention of buying tools and learning how to do most of my own work. Our local bicycle collective offers a free Park Tool class and I'm looking forward to attending. Re: [RBW] Re: Headset Issue
Dunno if yours is a Tange or Shimano with the cages, but to prevent a notchy feeling in the headset some folks recommend removing the ball bearings from the bottom cage, adding enough to fill the void (save one or two), and re-installing the headset with the lower bearings 'loose' between the races. [RBW] Bombadil on the Trail
Dodged a few thunderstorms yesterday and took the Bombadil to the Red Cedar Trail in East-central Wisconsin. Plenty of dappled shade made the heat bearable. Nice trail, and very little activity. Hi Everyone, I have been partnering up with a few people to figure out a way to get 100 bikes and helmets for the Christmas at the Club event that is held every December at the Santa Ana Boys and Girls Club. Over the past few years, the number of bikes that have been given away each year has dropped dramatically and we are trying to make sure that we can get at least 100 kids on bikes this year. [RBW] Re: Headset Issue
So, dealt with three shops this a.m. Called the shop where I took the bike the first time and they didn't have the tools for sale but offered to order them. Called a second shop and they said they had the tools but when I got there they didn't have them and when I complained the manager said he meant he had tools for shop use. He offered to tear apart the headset if I left the bike for a week and refused to consider that maybe the race just needed to be loosened a scosche. No thanks. I let my kid climb on their water-bottle cage display before I left to express my irritation. Third shop is in a more exclusive neighborhood and emphasizes high-end brands for the well-heeled who want to look well-heeled, but they are also the Waterford/Gunnar dealer so I had high hopes. An awkward teenager paced around the shop for thirty minutes looking for something to sell me before the manager came in, grabbed a wrench, and adjusted it nicely in about 30 seconds. Still, no wrenches to sell me but I bought a couple of tubes in appreciation. We'll see how this goes. I rode it around the block this afternoon and declared the steering at least subjectively better. Hopefully the adjustment will stick and I'll get many more miles of satisfying use from this headset. I'm ordering the spanners. Aside from what seems to be a satisfactory repair, the best part about parading my leather-saddled, be-fendered, big-tired, taped-and- shellacked handlebars, racks everywhere, Sam into bike shops is watching the jaws hit floor. Its like driving an expedition-ready Range Rover into a Kia dealership. Matt: The graphics on the headset are mostly rubbed out but my original purchase invoice says its a Tange. Seems like a lot of work to address what seems like a design flaw. Wouldn't you just want to replace it? D.G. On Jul 25, 12:12 pm, Phil Bickford phi...@sonic.net wrote: Hi Daren - Getting the tools for the job sounds like a step in the right direction. I'd write off that first shop. The second shop, however should have done the test ride themselves before they allowed you to take it home. Doing an adjustment like this yourself is a good start in self reliance. [RBW] Re: Headset Issue
Darin, glad to hear you got it sorted out... I lol'd at the part where you left the shop in disgust, but not before letting your child climb on their water bottle display :D Anyway sounds like you found a pretty good shop in the process. As far as the ball-bearing cages, my understanding is that they are an artifact of an earlier age of fine japanese bicycles, when the goal was to make assembly lighting quick. The cage simply keeps the bearings together so front-ends can be assembled without looking. By removing it, you can fit more bearings between the races, further distributing the load on the bearings. This is the way pedal bearings are arranged on most loose ball models- like MKS. Also, the bearings will have more room to 'float' which minimizes the likelihood that brinelling could happen. This is when the bearings wear little divets in the races where they make contact, especially on the lower races, a phenomenon which manifests itself in the form of indexed or notchy steering. I've had this happen twice, and have been doing it on my bikes ever since, though only for the lower headset bearings. It is not that much trouble if you just use a lot of grease to keep the bearings in place while you carefully slide the fork into place. Once you do it you won't have to do it again. -Matt -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. The Hunqapillar !Have you ridden wider tires? Once I got a Bombadil . my desire to ride even 35mm tires on my road bike has gone by the wayside... and don't even ride it these days. Now I want another Riv Hunqapillar or Sam I thought for about a day! Hunqapillar was an easy decision... as 38mm tires would be the narrowist tire I'd likely ride anyways but I'll use 2 Duremes on it. BTW ... for other buyers of the H I contacted Keven about changing the color to just a single color (no pinstripes)... a repaint on a new frame is $100. Re: [RBW] Hunqapillar or Hillborne
Surely either bike has *plenty* of ability to spare for the tasks you describe. That is, I commute daily on a Hillborne, primarily on trail, 10 miles each way. with a 260lb minimum payload (rider+cargo), for over 4,000 miles so far. The Hillborne feels sturdy and stable in this role. I've had 300+ lbs (rider+cargo) on it and ridden improved trails for scores of miles. The cargo felt a little shaky, but the bike was not. The Hunqapillar surely would be even more sturdy. There are a number of differences that may matter to a given person, but aren't really deciding factors based on your purpose for the bike. 26 (Hunq) vs 650B (Hill) standover is slightly higher (bottom bracket slightly higher) on Hunqapillar longer chainstays (Hunqapillar) soft tires (Hill) vs. super-soft tires (Hunq) wide tires (Hill) vs. super-wide tires (Hunq) You *might* consider the 52cm Hillborne, depending on how you like your sizing. As for looks... I feel opposite the way you do. I don't really care for lug lining or the grey/kidney scheme. I don't *love love love* the Hillborne green, but I do prefer it. In fact, I'm probably going to get a second Hillborne (instead of a Hunqapillar) myself. That reflects the facts that I have several interchangeable cockpits which already fit the Hillborne, that I think the Hillborne is plenty of bike for my uses, and that I know the Hillborne fits me well. (In my 60cm size, the Hillborne is roughly between the Hunqa's 58cm and 62cm sizes... the 58cm is close but I'd rather go bigger if I change at all... so it's a tough call.) It does not indicate that the Hillborne is a better bike than the Hunqapillar. Obviously, if you have a chance to ride one of each, do so. That should probably be the deciding event. Either choice is good on the face of it. Also obviously, I'm of no help at all. Sorry. Good luck! [RBW] Re: Saddle Sack Medium w/ Nitto Big Back Rack
Hey Darin, I was gone for a few days. The bag is a medium. It does work fine without a support. If you stand up to pedal it sways back and forth a bit. It might be worth getting the large if you're gonna use it with a rack. --mike On Jul 23, 9:47 am, Darin G. dbg...@mac.com wrote: Mike, helpful photo. Is that a medium or a large saddle sack? So, I'll probably get the bag and see how it works and then get a Top Rack if I can't live with the asymmetry of the bag flopped over the front of the rack a la Pondero's setup. [RBW] 3 days in and around the Mt Hood NF
Got in a few hours ago from 3 days of solo bike camping. Sat and Sun were gorgeous days that included many miles on beautiful and perfect Forest Service Roads. Sun was exceptionally hot and I felt at one point I was on the verge of heat exhaustion. Fortunately as shady and beautiful spot on the side of the road presented itself to me and I was able to rest a bit and continue on without any problems. As I went to sleep that night the stars were out and brilliant with no clouds in the sky. Around 1am I woke to lightening and thunder but no rain. I got up around 6am, packed up camp and it started raining. The temperature had also dropped and it was very cloudy and misty in spots. On the descent down Hwy 26 from Government Camp I was pretty cold and it stayed cold until I got to Sandy then it started to warm up. It was just a really good time. http://www.flickr.com/photos/41335973@N00/collections/72157627157230467/ A week from tomorrow I head out for 8 or 9 days with a friend. Making a 130 fit into 135 is no biggie..aside from that at 170 pounds I think a Hillborne would be fine if you are primarily a road rider.if a dirt dabbler the Hunqua would be my choice as a better all rounder but then I am finally now at a mere 258 and dropping. Any of the Rive bikes can be ridden on trails by a lighter skilled rider but us big people need more bike under us IHMO. I once had a early model Specialized (lugged) Stumpjumper and wish I had kept it. The Hunq seems like a good re-creation of that butpersonally I love the twin top tube look of the Sam and may consider replacing my Long Haul Trucker frame with one or an Atlantis. So many choices! You'd want a stubby 15mm box end ratchet/ open end combo wrench then for your SO I purchased one and its really handy for changing gears without rounding the axle nuts. Re: [RBW] Re: Saddle Sack Medium w/ Nitto Big Back Rack
Yes, I think you can wing it on smaller frames like you have. I rode with the Sackville panniers today for the first time since I got them. The laptop fits but leaves a largish opening on the top flap. I have it covered with a neoprene sleeve and it didn't appear to get dusty from the ride on the gravel trail. Everything else is covered with a thin layer of dust during the summer months, although I have to say that the fenders help a lot with the dust as well. [RBW] Re: 3 days in and around the Mt Hood NF
I love my Hilsen but it tended to shimmy with a rear load on long fast descents. Also, the Silver brakes have served me well but the LHT is solid on descents and the cantis seem to offer a little better stopping power. I've really been impressed with the LHT. I haven't needed to fully load it (front and rear panniers) but I've ridden it with front biased load and a rear biased load and it's been fine. I'm still not sure what I'll do for the tour in terms of baggage. I'll either go small Ortlieb panniers up front with a stuff sack on the platform of the rear rack or just use the big panniers in the rear. I like the way it feels on descents with the front panniers, it feels a bit more solid but the rear big panniers are easier to load and distribute the weight. I say go for a Hunqa. I had every intention of getting one earlier this year and I kept putting it off then some other expenses came up and I just went for the LHT which has been fine. I wouldn't mind losing one of my other bikes next year--Cross Check or Quickbeam and replacing it with a Surly Troll. --mike -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] Re: Hunqapillar or Hillborne
Hi Joe, Well, you know I went with the Hunq. I love it, and I only ride on smooth paved roads. I didn't really need the slightly stouter tubing, but it didn't matter. The Hunq rides beautifully on paved roads with the Schwalbe 700 x 50 Big Apples I have on it. It doesn't feel sluggish at all, though I wouldn't doubt that a Sam with narrower tires might feel a little zippier. Color schemes are so subjective. I happen to be one who loves the gray and kidney bean red colors of the Hunq. Of the different Riv model color schemes, I'd have to say that my hands down favorite would have to be the Bombadil foresty green and cream color scheme. Simply gorgeous. Joe, you owe it to yourself to go to Riv HQ and look at, sit on, and test ride those bikes! Try bikes with the different bars- moustache, albatross, Bullmoose...and, if you like drops, the Noodle. Trying the different models with different cockpit setups, will really help you to decide which model and setup looks and feels just right for you. As others here have said, you can't go wrong with either. Try both out, and see which one feels like home to you. Good luck! And have fun with the process! What is a fair price for a bike? Not how much is a person willing to pay. Not how much can a bike be sold for. How much SHOULD a bike (or different types of bikes) cost? IMHO most pricing debates revolve around how much money a person wants to pay for a certain cycle; often (but not always) that amount is less than the price advertised. Pretty often I hear “I would love a Brand X if only it were $29.99”. Obviously I am exaggerating, but maybe that spending based thinking is going about it from the wrong angle. Bicycle pricing, like many economic sets, is created with the conflation of marketing, consumer demand, and cost. I think there is a way to dilettante a fair price that is neither inflated nor understated. So I ask again – assuming a retail setting for a non-custom frame and fork – how much should a bike cost? Just a frame and fork keeps it simpler with the entire plethora of factors already present. Perhaps shifting the focus from an individual’s point of view would yield interesting information. can opener in hand JL -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. Re: [RBW] How much should a bike cost?
In my mind $600-$700 for a lugged Taiwanese bike is the price to beat. A Bleriot or Rawland type frame. That may be unrealistic any more, but it's what I want to pay for a frame. The Soma bike is pretty close @ $900. On Mon, Jul 25, 2011 at 10:35 PM, JL subfas...@gmail.com wrote: What is a fair price for a bike? Not how much is a person willing to pay.
