I like the new blug. Makes it easier to find old post and makes it much pleasurable to read. [RBW] New Website Mixup
Originally, I believe Hillbornes were all single top-tubes and canti-studded and original green (which I'd call green with gold-aura if I were forced to invent a nonsense name) and were made in Taiwan. Availability issues, I think, led to Waterford-made orange Hillbornes, which had double top tubes on the 56 and 60. And, when it arrived, the 64. The 48 appeared as well (single top tube). All canti-studded. Not too long afterward, I think 56 and 60 double-top-tubed non-canti-studded orange framesets from Taiwan became available. There may even have been a round of single-top-tubed non-canti-studded 56 and 60 framesets from Taiwan early in this phase; I'm not sure. Then the color changed to the current green (pea soup green?). And so now all 56 and 60 framesets have double top tubes and are available from either Taiwan or Waterford (separate prices). The 48, 52 and 64 framesets are from Waterford. The 48 and 52 are single top tube; the 64 is double. All Waterford frames are canti-studded. All from Taiwan are not. All available in pea-soup green. I believe my vague recollections are generally accurate. But even if not, they do accurately characterize the complexity of the history and the product mix. This kind of product page challenge is not a result of the new web-site; it pre-dates it. I think it's fair to suggest it's a part of the cause of the new web-site. Though, with recent developments at CERN, I'm not so sure. Yours, Thomas Lynn Skean -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. Re: [RBW] Wow you go really fast on that thing
I usually get compliments on how pretty my Ram is, probably because it's green and not black or white like the ubiquitous Specialized/Giant/Etc. bikes around here. I recently was approached by a pair of women who were power walking and came up to me while I was resting. They admired the bike for quite a while and said they hadn't seen anything like it, and had never heard of the brand (nor could they pronounce Rambouillet). They admittedly didn't know much about bikes, and one of them then went on to ask me, Is the seat made of wood? (it's a Brooks B-17 Champion Special - large oxidized copper rivets...) [RBW] Re: Wow you go really fast on that thing
I just read through these posting and it brought two stories back to mind. The first, cica 2003, when I got my Rambouillet. The first ride was to the top of the Appalachian Gap in Vt. It's about 40 miles from my home, uphill all the way, which gradually gets steeper and steeper until the last 1500 meters which is 22%. When I got to the top I was greeted by a group of French Canadian tourist who complimented me on my classic bike. They were astounded to discover that it was brand new! The second story begins in 1983 when I bought my adolescent son his first racing bike, a lugged steel Bianchi. Over time we replaced all the components with Campy NR, and when he out grew the frame (he moved on to a hand-me-down Marinoni frame and I got a new one, which I still have) his younger sister got the bike. She rode it for quite a while, and when she was ready to go to college we spray painted the frame an awful shade of green, did a deliberately botched tapeing job, installed a ripped saddle, but left the good Campy parts on it and sent her off. She rode the bike through four years of college and at least another five in DC without it looking like an object of desire, before it was stolen. Later, my 115 lb daughter, came across the bike, confronted the thief and rode home on the bike. She still uses it, although she now has a newer SOMA, and an even newer son to occupy her attention. blessings, michael take care of Self; it's one of a kind and irreplaceable 41 degrees and raining today -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. Re: [RBW] Stem length question - WTB shorter replacement - how short???
Here is a very useful tool: http://yojimg.net/bike/web_tools/stem.php Of course you can simply try lowering the stem and see how it feels; too far is something that only you can decide. I wonder at your statement saying that your arms are almost locked in certain positions. One problem with them is that they don't support heavy, lopsided loads; I found a cheap Greenfield rear-dropout kickstand worked better for off-center, heavy rear loads. (A trike is even better.) Re: [RBW] Re: Twin legged kickstand
Depending on the tires your have, the double kickstand may rub them when you're riding. I couldn't fit it on my Hunqapillar with 60mm Big Apples and on my Atlantis, they barely clear the 50mm supremes. They are fine with the 50s, but I ended up removing the rubber tips as they'd force the legs a bit inwards unless I pulled them out manually. This is mainly due to the fact that I trimmed them so they wouldn't be that long and raise the rear wheel so much. The other side effect you'll have to manage is that with any bag on the front, the wheel will tend to flop to one side or the other, going all the way past 90 degrees to the frame so your purpose might be defeated in the garage or you'll have to ensure there is something preventing the wheel from flopping and keeping it aligned with the frame. Aside from these issues, I like the double kickstand. Re: [RBW] Twin legged kickstand
I have one (Pleischer) on my Trek 520. I had to grind the bottom plate to clear the rder cables, and it still rubs, though I clean and grease it now and then and it hasn't caused any problems. It doesn't mount well w/o a kickstand plate (needs their deluxe top plate), but that shouldn't be a problem with any fairly new Riv bike.Overall it's a big plus. I've put far too much sideways momentum into the bike while parked in the garage w/o knocking it over, so I'm happy. [RBW] Hunqua/big apple test ride Hunqua sighting (in Berkeley) in one day!
At RBW today I took their big apple shod Hunqua w/ Albatross bars out for a ride, and WOW... what a blast! I was wanting to find cracks and bumps in the pavement! That thing was a blast to ride! The big apples had just the right amount of bounce to take up the bumps, and the Hunqua looks awesome! I'm so tempted now to buy one, swap the parts off my Trek 520, and sell the Trek frame! Problem is I'd probably barely break even on the handelbars stem that I'd need and still be out $2000. :-) It had already crossed my mind, and now it's seriously stuck in my mind! Then... after my ride to Berkeley (mentioned in another thread) I was getting ready to drive back to the Sacramento area... loaded my AHH into the back of the Subaru and started to drive off... it was around 8:00 pm and I was waiting to turn left onto University St (from California St)... there was a bike coming in the opposite direction, so I was yielding before turning left when out of the corner of my eye I saw two top tubes... one serious case of whiplash later I realized that it was yet another Hunqua... was that one of you? If you'd only ridden by 10 minutes earlier I would have been standing next to my car with my AHH and could have met you in person... oh well... -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. And that's why there are no more dinosaurs. :-) Just noticed... it's the Bombadil that's $2000... the Hunqa [spelled it wrong earlier, oops!] is ONLY $1500... that gray/burgundy sure is purty... and I love the headbadge!
