[RBW] Re: Attaching a basket to the front rack idea
No. B/c it's velcro there's a little elasticity, as there is with the metal basket itself. I attach the strips in such a way that there's opposing tension, iteratively tightening them- if that makes sense. Pro'ly best to start with the loop (nearest to the headtube), then each of the corners, revisiting them to further tighten them, as you get around the rack. That make sense? Akin to how you're supposed to tighten the nuts/bolts on a car wheel. Using zipties depends on the slight elasticity of the metal wires of the basket- no different here. Haven't carried a load o' groceries yet, but I think it'll be plenty tight. Re: [RBW] Re: Attaching a basket to the front rack idea
I tie around the Wald basket and the Nitto mini-rack. That is, where the wire of the basket lays along the side rail of the rack, I use a constrictor knot (several, two on each side) to bind them tight to each other. You could also use hemp twine whipping to secure a basket like that, though it would be semi-permanent. And I saw a setup at RBW that simply used bar wrap tape to hold the basket in place. - Andrew, Berkeley On Fri, Jan 20, 2012 at 7:47 AM, colin p. cummings colinthehip...@gmail.com wrote: Andrew, To what do you secure the constrictor knot? RE: [RBW] Re: Riv Rally East - Falling Water train transportation
From the Google Map (link below, click on the terrain option from the pull-down Map menu), it looks like the ride to Fallingwater from Ohiopyle is a little over 4 miles, and total climb looks like from something above 1200 feet to something above 1600 feet -- although there appear to be some ups and downs in between, they don't look extreme at all. Maybe something like a 2% grade, on average? I took a look at this because I was thinking of riding my Quickbeam on RRE 2012, but was worried about the Fallingwater climb. Long ago, when I had my dark green Bombadil, I used Newbaum's green tape (sold by Riv) and amber shellac that I prepared myself. You can see a close-up here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/orthie251/4530205372/in/set-72157622958472288 Right now I've switched to Bullmoose bars on almost all my bikes and love the ergonomic PDW leather grips. [RBW] Re: Sam Hillborne 56cm question
I believe you can order the Waterford version without the second top tube, but the price goes up. I have one of the first run green Sams in a 56 and I totally agree with you on the double top tube. You will find plenty of folks in this forum who are thrilled with their 2TT bikes and agree with the premise for making them that way. I, however, find my single TT more than adequate for doing all of the things you describe and prefer the aesthetics of the single TT. I've done everything but a loaded tour with it, and I think it could handle that as well. I will say that if I was looking at $1500 to get the Waterford Sam I'd save another $500 to get either an Atlantis or AHH as you're 75% of the way to a premium frame. Alternatively, you could look for a used Sam with the single TT as they occasionally come up on the forum. D.G. Re: [RBW] Bar Tape
I've been using Bontrager tape for the last few wraps that I've done. It looks good (the brown color goes well with Brooks saddles and tan canvas), provides good padding, and is long enough to wrap the bars nice and thick. I'm waiting on several shuttle services to respond to my requests. Only one has gotten back to me, and they require that we rent an entire bus... Unless we have 40 people it may not be practical. One option I'm considering will be to start in Cumberland, MD, booking a hotel close to the Cumberland Amtrak station for Friday night (as long as I can leave my bike and gear in my hotel room or some other secure place). The Capitol Limited runs daily from Connellsville to Cumberland (at 6:30 AM!!!). We could drive our cars up to Connellsville early on Saturday, park them and hop the Capitol Limited back to Cumberland, where we would check out and ride to the trail. You're right young brother, you're right. There was a remark on here earlier about blocking the Riv site. Grant's pretty smart and I'm sure he's done his homework. However, if he used the name, and it was trademarked, and he didn't have permission, well that's that. I would agree that big money is behind this, but so what. In fact, it has to be so-how many times has congress agreed on anything, but, boom, here they are. So you know some contributors got on the phone. Or lobbyists or what have you. Think of all the videos of old bands that are on You Tube. Every time one of those is played, those guys are entitled to a cut, however small. They earned it and deserve it. BTW, a few years ago, when OJ Simpson was on trial, I TM'd the letters, name, abbreviation O.J. Every time it's mentioned I get a few cents. [RBW] Re: Bar Tape
The Dark Piney Green Japanese tape with a few coats of amber shellac is a pretty good match for the Sackville bags, but RBW appears to be out of it at the moment. That tape is probably my least favorite to apply though - the adhesive is stickier than my old favorite Tressostar, and it has a backing paper that you have to fight with. [RBW] Re: Sam Hillborne 56cm question
Double top tubes have good meritsI for one, would like one and love the unique look and practical benefits. Almost wish my SimpleOne were so equipped.speaking of the SO thats not a bad deal @ $800 and if you can live with a nice freewheel on a Phil hub then you could make a really nice 10 or 15 speed deraileur bicycle not to mention a IG hub bike or leave it a 1-4 speed deraileurless machine. I love mine and don't miss the extra gears. A bike so equipped (10 speed) was all we ever needed back in the day. When properly set up with the right gearing you would be at no disadvantage at all IMHO. My own geared machine is on a seven cog rear set up so yea.think about it. I'm about half way there, and discovered on their website that it seems the 56cm only comes with a double top tube. I emailed a few days ago to ask if this is the case, but haven't heard back. So, here's what I'm wondering - is the 56cm Sam only with a double top tube now? If so, what would you suggest as some other options? I really like the look and the idea of the Sam, but honestly don't like the look of the double top tube at all...and if I'm spending that much, I want to love not only the feel of it when I ride, but also I want to love the look of it -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] Re: Riv Rally East 2012
Steve: That's the fallback option... The first choice would be for Amtrak to get their sh** together and allow roll-on/roll-off for bikes (but I won't hold my breath) Second choice would be to get a shuttle service to transport people and bikes between the finish and the start (which I'm working on) Third choice might be for people to use multiple vehicles to shuttle themselves (if the first 2 options don't materialize) And then there's another variation of the last choice: do it a day early. In other words, get a hotel for Thursday night in Cumberland, do the car-shuttle-train thing Friday morning, then spend the entire day (Friday) taking your time, riding the climb at a leisurely pace, spend the night in Frostburg and meet up with everyone Sat morning. That might be a nice warmup ride. I have also checked into bus service between Connellsville and Cumberland, but I haven't found anything yet. That would be ideal, especially if the bus operator would allow bikes unboxed in the cargo area; you could drop your car in C'ville and shuttle down to C'land. Boy, so many options... Re: [RBW] Re: Say NO to Internet censorship
Actually camper it's not not liking it it's voicing an opinion.. Democracy hmm. So two rapist and one woman .. Guess rape would be legal. I write a book, a song etc. I make one copy for sale. That's all folks.. No amount of numbers wanting to read it makes it ok to force more copies The bills they are discussing may be really really really bad and need to be defeated. The criminal activity it is trying to prevent. Is not trivial or democratic ..it's flat out illegal. The arguments that the criminal activity is ok is sad, and wrong. The masses do NOT have the right to take my intellectual property at any price other than what I say. If I want to much money don't buy it. Still not ok to steal it. You can't vote it away either it's mine. Censorship of the Internet .. Well will the outrage continue for freedom when it's your kid in the photo on a server in another country... That is already the case.. But we would rather fight for freedom to steel than to protect kids. The bill may be just as flawed as our healthcare bill.. Yet it passed.. Due process.. Votes talking about it.. All good. On the bicycle forum.. Not so much.. It's here and I'll participate.. In good humor even.. So we have all jumped on the band wagon.. It's just so so warm and fuzzy feeling... Scary thing is most of you screaming against blocking the ip of a criminal would turn around and vote to force me to put a helmet on... Then complain when the others vote to keep your bicycle off the road. .. Oops democracy . But don't you dare block the ip of a crook.. Do nothing since the fix Might,, or possibly could, maybe be, abused or carried to far... Step all over my right to be protected then call it democracy.. Or oh they make to much money..they can afford it.. Do your fair share so I don't have to Just because the world is turning into this pack mentality of oh my look at this doesn't make it right either.. Mindless following and yelling no without looking at the problem is just as bad as the bill you want to block.
