[RBW] Re: Supernova E3 tail light opinions
I use the new Toplight line steady tail light. The horizontal bar helps drivers judge distance and it is as bright as any auto tail light. I also use a Princeton Tec Swerve on my helmet ( the switch is easy to manipulate when riding with winter gloves) that I turn on when I suspect a driver is not aware. This high helmet mounted tail light is good in hilly areas and when riding in traffic. I also have a backup Planet bike tail light on my Carradice bag should the others fail. My tires have reflective sidewalls and my Showers Pass jacket has reflective areas on it. I also use a ankle reflector. On the front is my new IQ Fly 24 and my helmet has the Serfas 150 lumen battery light that I use on low (50 lumens and still bright) for seeing around corners before turning or to blast drivers who high beam me. I also have red reflector tape on my fenders and white reflector tape on the head tube. I figure if I can't be seen at night with this set up the driver is drunk, high or blind. Re: [RBW] Re: Supernova E3 tail light opinions
Ryan: note that the standard roadwork barrier warning light is an amber blinkie (tho' I am old enough to remember the hand-bomb-shaped flaming flares used until the '60s or so). Of course, the fact that guvmint uses it is no proof of its reasonableness. Me, I use: one blinkie; one steady; and reflectors on person (Sam Browne or waist triangle, ankle reflectors) and bike (cranks; fender; sometimes rim, triangle if not on person). I think it's foolish to sweat this question too much -- as they say, it's not rocket science. Have a good headlight with backup; have a good blinkie with backup; have reflective gear on you and your bike; and ride with reasonable caution. This blog post is wordy and somewhat confused, but the essential message -- "don't ride stupidly and cycling is not that dangerous" -- is worth reconsidering. I personally discount the "moth effect" warnings and the "annoying to motorists" warnings; I want motorists to be alarmed if that's what it takes to be visible -- let them scrape the left curb in their panic if that means they see me (I refer to the idiots who feel they must give a cyclist 25 feet of clearance by passing entirely in the oncoming lane; tho' these are better than the brain-dead type who drive with right wheels 2' across the bike lane line). Of course, courtesy would dictate care in selecting your rear lights when riding with other cyclists. Forgot to add: I am skeptical about Foss's being proof against goatheads, but if they are, I will ante up if Riv carries them for 60 mm tires. Re: [RBW] Tubeless candidate???
The crucial test will be to run over a plot of goatheads, coming out on the other side with scores sticking into your tires: if after two days you find no air loss, Foss tubes are proof against the thorns. Note that very often when you run over a goathead it will go in only part way and, if you don't smack it again against the pavement multiple times won't penetrate the tube. OTOH, I've been on many rides where I pick up a thorn slightly to the outside of the middle of the tread and ride the rest of the way anxiously seeing the thorn revolving with the tires; then pull it out at the end of the ride and hear that dreaded "H..." At other times yet a goathead will penetrate but cause only a very slow leak so that it is only after a number of hours that you find your tire flat. In fact, most of my flats are slow-leak goathead-caused. Patrick Moore, who had a traumatic time on Sat eve. fixing and refixing and dammit re-refixing tubes with multiple goathead holes. I also have this taillight on my Sam. I look at it as the baseline for the rest of my safety gear - no matter what, it's on the bike, i don't have to worry about the batteries wearing out, and i can't forget it. I don't think that it is an awesome safety solution on it's own. i add a planet bike blinky to the back of my saddlesack, wear ankle reflectors, have reflective stuff on my clothing, use a safety triangle, and have pedal reflectors at various different times depending on where I am going. I always always use the triangle if I am going to be riding somewhere new that I don't know well, as I don't want to get caught out in bad traffic on a rough stretch of road without that added protection. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group. [RBW] FS: Super inexpensive Sugino crankset
I've got a Sugino triple crankset to sell. It's an OEM model, that came on a $1000 Specialized road bike. It has 172.5mm arms. It's got a 130mm BCD for the large and middle chainrings and a 74mm BCD for the small ring. It comes with a 52/42/30 chainrings. The large and middle ring are Sugino aluminum (round) with pins. The small ring is Sugino steel. I used the crankset for a couple months as a compact double. I replaced the 52 tooth ring with a Spot brand chainguard, and used just the 42/30. The crankset with the original three chainrings, with the chainguard, with a cartridge BB of the right length, all can be had for $50 shipped. You should be able to see the photos on my expired ebay auction: http://www.ebay.com/itm/260936667255?ssPageName=STRK:MEUSX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1560.l2649#ht_500wt_1361 -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group. Re: [RBW] Re: Supernova E3 tail light opinions
One more idea: a big reflective triangle attached to your bag, or a reflective vest (personally dislike these -- too much of a hassle to get on and off over all the other winter kit), Sam Browne or -- my favorite -- a reflective triangle attached to a reflective belt. One more idea yet: Lightman strobe when you want to attach a blinkie to a bag that, unlike a frame or seatpost or rack mounting, does not hold the light in one position. The strobe does not suffer from the off-axis decline in visibility that LED blinkies seem to do. OTOH, the Lightman that I have runs only 2 hours on 2 alkaline or NMH AAs. https://picasaweb.google.com/BERTIN753/BIKESMISCELLANEA#5663812088636007938 Don't try this with your two-wheeler: https://picasaweb.google.com/BERTIN753/BIKESMISCELLANEA#5695750139888167026 On Mon, Jan 23, 2012 at 1:00 PM, EricP wrote: > Good comments patrick and Liesl. Lee Mitchell, a local bike person who has been driving sag support for literally hundreds of events here in NorCal, recommends reflective ankle bands as the most valuable piece of nighttime safety equipment. [RBW] Re: Supernova E3 tail light opinions
Hi Eric, I commute on Summit Avenue on the way home, and I find that when I come up on other bikes, one of the great things that identifies it as a bicycle is pedal reflectors. Their movement immediately says "bike" and I'm surprised how well/far away they can be seen. Certainly further than bad lights. On the flashing front, I do like the planet bike blinky. I've seen one as I was crossing the Marshall Ave bridge and the bike was up the hill just about at Cretin and it was a little foggy that day. Really impressive. You can also add a few more lights in back. I ride in the dark quite a bit and I have three tail lights, all battery powered: An old Vista Light 5 LEd mounted to the rack, one on the fender and the Soma Bullet light down where the rack attaches to the stay. I also have one of the reflective triangles Rivendell sells and the rack light makes a nice glow through the mesh, especially in the fog. Re: [RBW] Bay Area Travel/Biking - any place
John -- San Francisco abounds in bike rentals. One can go to very few of the popular routes or places and not see dozens of people on rental bikes. Sometimes, it's literally hundreds. I do not know what they charge, but the bikes look to be well maintained and most if not all are hybrids with fat tires and upright seating. Also increasingly more popular are electrics and electric assists rentals. Most of the rentals I see around here are Marin or Trek, and the various electrics. Most of us in this area have done many times what you are anticipating; biking everywhere in the Bay Area. With the intermodal public transportation system -- most bike friendly and accommodating -- one can easily get around sans automobile. Once in SF purchase a Clipper Card (Start with two cards at $20 each, then add funds accordingly). That allows you ready access and entry to SF Muni, BART, CalTrain, Golden Gate Transit, and other transits. >From SF, one can bike all the way to Palo Alto and beyond, or go part way and incorporate CalTrain into the plan. IMO, CalTrain is the most bike accommodating agency around, with dedicated bike cars on each train. You can also take BART to the east bay -- and to walnut Creek to RBW -- or ride it. Of course, a ride across the Golden Gate Bridge is a must, then you also can ride into Marin's most famous areas; Marin Headlands, Tiburon/Paradise, Mt. Tam, Point Reyes, etc. You can ferry back to SF from Sausalito, Tiburon, and San Anselmo. I often bike from SF all the way to Alameda via the Dumbarton Bridge. Much of that route is on the Bay Trail with mixed surfaces. You can also take AmTrak Capitol Corridor express from the east bay which is bike accommodating, and ride up to Davis, Winters, Sacramento and beyond. You can also ferry to Vallejo and ride from there. There's nearly endless opportunities for great rides and accommodating public transit. I'm sure others will also have sound suggestions. Enjoy! From: John L To: RBW Owners Bunch Sent: Sun, January 22, 2012 6:13:24 PM Subject: [RBW] Bay Area Travel/Biking - any place My wife and I will be traveling from Boston to California in March and have 4-5 days to explore the Bay area, which will involve visiting friends in Palo Alto, downtown SF, and Napa, and, I hope, a pilgrimage to the Riv HQ. We were hoping to do this exploration mostly by bike - credit card style, although probably trains, ferries and even a rental car may come into play (details are sketchy at this point). Any recommendations for how to get a reliable riv-ish ride for that time? I'm considering shipping our bikes (seems cheaper than bringing them on an airplane) but it makes me nervous. I'd prefer to rent, but most of what's out there seems to be offering skinny tired carbon bikes or hybrids, neither of which appeals to me. On a previous similar thread, someone suggests Karim's used bikes in Berkeley but elsewhere on the internet, it's reputed to be a fence for thieves. Bay Area Bikes offers the Big Dummy which is an attractive option but probably overbuilt for our needs (it makes my wife a little nervous). [RBW] FS: Atlantis 58cm
This is my wife's bike. It is a complete bike. She is the second (or maybe third) owner but is in great shape, she barely rode it. Classic case of me thinking she would ride a lot with me if we got her a quality ride. :-) Here is the CL link: http://missoula.craigslist.org/bik/2798067361.html thanks, John -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group. [RBW] Re: Sam Hillborne 56cm question
I am ~ 5'10" with 84.5 PBH and have a 56 Sam. The 56 is a great fit for me. I think 84 is on the cusp of 52/56 sizing but bigger is better than smaller as you can dial things in with stem, bars and saddle height. Right now I have the bike built up with 46cm Noodle bars and 8cm Technomic stem. That combo works well for me. I do believe the Taiwan 56 frames are double TT but a call to Riv will answer that. Also - sometimes there are frames in the "attic" at RBW. There was a Protovelo labeled Sam frame a few weeks back. Might still be there. The San Marcos is really geared towards road use with smaller loads and minor off road. A nice looking frame and rides well, though. If you can handle the "girl's bike" questions the Yves Gomez might be worth considering. Same geometry as the Sam. But no top tube at all! Another used bike to keep an eye open for is a Heron. There were a couple of models and they are lighter tubing than the Atlantis - but very similar geometry. Designed by Grant and Waterford built. They take narrower tires than the modern Rivs. You can dig the info out of the internet archive wayback machine. http://web.archive.org/web/20061029010028/http://www.heronbicycles.com/frames.html Dan San Rafael, CA On Jan 21, 7:29 am, Mike Goldsworthy wrote: > Thanks everyone for the help! > > I've sent an email to countrybike and will see what they've got. Re: [RBW] Sam Hillborne 56cm question - diff between the Riv models
Thanks Dusty…I've been looking at the other models today, and think I'm still pretty sold on getting a Sam. It seems that there's a few of them laying around in different places. Rivendell actually has 1 single top tube 56cm in maroon right now that they're selling at a discount. I'm not sure I want a maroon one…so throwing that out there for whoever else stumbles on this thread On Jan 21, 2012, at 2:12 PM, DustyMerkin wrote: > I hate to keep bringing up Soma but the lugged Stanyan is a great frame and > looks like you can get it for 450 on ebay right now which is an amazing price > for these. > > http://www.ebay.com/itm/Soma-Stanyan-Frame-and-Fork-56cm-BRAND-NEW-w-FREE-UPS-SHIPPING-/200695937583?pt=Road_Bikes&hash=item2eba68fa2f#ht_2559wt_1168 > > I > > -- > You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups > "RBW Owners Bunch" group. > To view this discussion on the web visit > https://groups.google.com/d/msg/rbw-owners-bunch/-/MrAxkys379oJ. > To post to this group, send email to rbw-owners-bunch@googlegroups.com. > To unsubscribe from this group, send email to > rbw-owners-bunch+unsubscr...@googlegroups.com. > For more options, visit this group at > http://groups.google.com/group/rbw-owners-bunch?hl=en. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group. RE: [RBW] Re: Riv Rally East 2012
That climb might affect bike choice, though -- probably push me away from my current thinking that I might do the ride on my QB (as my son Sam was, as well). But we'll make it work, whatever the decision is. -Original Message- From: rbw-owners-bunch@googlegroups.com [mailto:rbw-owners-bunch@googlegroups.com] On Behalf Of Montclair BobbyB Sent: Friday, January 20, 2012 6:43 PM To: RBW Owners Bunch Subject: [RBW] Re: Riv Rally East 2012 I'm waiting on several shuttle services to respond to my requests. Only one has gotten back to me, and they require that we rent an entire bus... Unless we have 40 people it may not be practical. One option I'm considering will be to start in Cumberland, MD, booking a hotel close to the Cumberland Amtrak station for Friday night (as long as I can leave my bike and gear in my hotel room or some other secure place). The Capitol Limited runs daily from Connellsville to Cumberland (at 6:30 AM!!!). We could drive our cars up to Connellsville early on Saturday, park them and hop the Capitol Limited back to Cumberland, where we would check out and ride to the trail. That's a $17 solution (plus a few hours of lost sleep)... It also makes for a slightly later start on Saturday morning, and adds 16 miles of uphill from Cumberland... no big deal, right??
