[RBW] Re: New Sam Hillborne photos

2012-05-07 Thread charlie
Yes I have a Hobo bag that I use when I need to carry something. I
like this frame it fits me well and feels pretty solid. The handling
is real predictablein fact I had a moment of inattention that
found me wandering towards the ditch and I caught it just in time and
the steering seemed to respond quickly but not too quickly if that
makes any sense. Just a pleasant sensible frame designI think I'll
put quite a few miles on it.

I've ridden my Hillborne a lot that way and it really works well for me. An
Acorn non-boxy bag works surprisingly well on such a setup and gives you
 rider-facing pockets.

Re: [RBW] Re: Slipping QR in horizontal drop out help

2012-05-07 Thread newenglandbike
I bet the steel QR solves the problem... aluminum QR nuts are suspect for
slippage. In addition to going to steel, maybe take it in to a shop and
have them align the dropouts or borrow a Park FFG-2 alignment tool- if
they are skewed a bit it certainly isn't helping the situation.Anyway I
hope you figure it out.

Disclaimer: I realize, running knobby, lugged tires under fitted fenders can be
hazardous, as a twig could get picked up and pulled in and jam. Do not do as I
do; I was curious if it was even possible to do this, so I tried...

56cm Bomba, 650b; Pacenti NeoMoto 2.3 tires, and P65 SKS/ESGE fenders.
Plenty of room, more than my Ram has w/32's under aluminum 45 fenders...

I intend to not run fenders w/ lugged tires when I need them; but I'm looking

making sure that these are going to fit about any tire I can find...

[RBW] Re: Rationalizing a Reduction; Encourage Me

2012-05-07 Thread Esteban
See what happens when you count your bikes!? I try to stay vague about it.

As others have said, the QB would be a fantastic no-thought commuter. You
can install metal fenders if you have bolt-on Phil hub - or a bit janky but
useful with SKS. Maybe that could do the commute work that the Yves Gomez
would do. Sell the Jamis. Hillborne is boxed, easy to sell, big-time
overlap with the Atlantis. Gone.

As others have said, Bleriot and Romulus have some some overlap. But the
Romulus could be skinny-tired (28mm) spartan road bike, while the Bleriot
could be fancy-fendered, front rando bag, Lierre-clad distance rando
machine. That Rawland is a useful bike! ;) Nice to have an absolute
gravel grinder with no worry about terrain for when the conditions or mood
calls for it. Bombing down Mt. Tam via RR Grade is fun on those Neo-Motos.

So, in summary (and this is kinda fun - thanks for the catharsis, Ray):
ATLANTIS: tour, ramble, town country. Ride to Big Sur.
BLERIOT: supple 650B rando-zeitgeist rig. Ride to Pt. Reyes Lighthouse,
taking the dirt path through Samuel Taylor.
ROMULUS: spartan road machine. Ride Seven Sisters/Alpine Dam
QUICKBEAM: commuter/city/lock-up workhorse. Ride to the Mission.
RAWLAND: Off-road adventure bike. Ride Hookooekoo trail.

To be honest, I'd hang that YG in storage for a future high-class city bike.

Esteban
San Diego, Calif.

 Here is what I have:
 An Atlantis, fully rigged and used for long-distance touring;
 occassionally pulling a BOB trailer.
A first generation Quickbeam, rigged for city commute.
An Yves Gomez, rigged for city commute.
A Bleriot, rigged for any kind of riding.
 A Canti-Romulus, rigged for roading.
An un-built, new-in-the-box, Single TT Hillborne, Orange.
A Rawland Sogn mountain bike, 650B (Used primarily on fire roads)
A Jamis IGH commuter (my beater for city commute in rain)

Here is how I see the garage after the reduction:
An Atlantis (Or, maybe the Sam) for loaded tours
An Yves Gomez for city commute
 A Canti-Rom for fast rides
 A Rawland Sogn for off-road

Re: [RBW] Re: Riv Rally midwest and Grant's visit and other bike stuff to do in Minneapolis at that time

2012-05-07 Thread Jim Thill - Hiawatha Cyclery
I think it worked that time. It'll be great to ride with you, JB.

Everybody who's pledged to attend this event is a true gentleman, except that
one guy, but he knows who he is. Speaking of gentlemen, I'm not sure that we
have any ladies planning to come. Not sure that I blame them for having other
plans that conflict with riding around discussing the nuances of cantilever
brake straddle hanger aesthetics for a couple days, but I hope you Riv-oriented
females feel that you are welcome and encouraged to join the overnight ride, in
full or in part. That goes for every demographic category, actually.

The two commonest concerns I've heard are addressed here:
1. You don't need to ride a Rivendell or even a bike that is somehow related to
Riv. Your bike need not be steel or have a tweed mudflap or even fenders. There
will be some country roads and some hills that are substantial by Midwest
standards, so I recommend some low gears and a tire that's at least 32 mm. And
you'll have to schlep your stuff, so you'll need adequate cargo capacity
(unless you can get someone else to transport your gear for you). Aside from
those suggestions, what brand or style of bike you ride doesn't matter. It
matters more to have a versatile, can-do attitude and a sense of adventure.

2. Everybody I've talked to is concerned about slowing everybody down. Good!
We need slow people (like me) to keep things in the proper perspective. I
figure that the fast guys and gals won't be into this, so it's probably a
non-issue. We've got all day, so don't blow it by finishing early! Plan to take
LOTS of pictures and to make frequent stops to regroup, chat, have snacks,
occasionally address mechanical issues, etc. That said, you should be somewhat
confident in your fitness to cover 50-60 somewhat hilly, mixed terrain miles in
a day, on back-to-back days. If that's likely to be a hardship for you, please
be sure to have some kind of emergency bail-out plan, just in case, but still
feel free to join the ride.

Hard to believe this is just a few weeks away. It's going to be the highlight
of the Summer, I expect!

[RBW] Re: Question regarding listing my Hunq on eBay

2012-05-07 Thread Jim Thill - Hiawatha Cyclery
There is no blue book of used bike values. I know some of you gents are
patient and willing to wait for minty specimens offered for 50% of retail.
Others are willing to pay a bit more to avoid weeks or months of bargain
shopping and haggling. I've sold many used Rivs and other desirable pre-owned
bicycles, and had people on this list email me lowball offers or otherwise
suggest that my price was too high, only to sell the thing at my asking price a
few hours or a few days later.

There are a lot of factors that go into it, but in Riv's case MSRP has
sometimes risen steeply, and availability of some models in some sizes has been
spotty. I always say, if the right buyer comes along, price doesn't matter
much, but if the right buyer doesn't come along, price doesn't matter much.

A little bit about it: I bought it in the fall of 2008. It was one
of the floor models at Rivendell, and I bought it built there. The
only change I've made is attaching a fixed gear, making the rear hub
fixed/free. I've had it here in Omaha. NE since then. I don't ride
it with snow on the ground, and I've kept it mostly indoors.
Otherwise in the garage. I have another bike I use to ride around
town, so I haven't ridden the Quickbeam as much as it should be
ridden. No dents, but there are some small chips in the paint, which
I've tried to show in the pictures.

I'm asking 1300 shipped, or best offer.

 Pictures of it here:

interested and want any of those items, we can work something out.

[RBW] FS: Brooks Pro saddle, Park Bag supports, Suntour pedals

2012-05-07 Thread hobie
Hi all. I have the following for sale. All prices include shipping.
Thanks for looking.

1-Brooks Black Professinal saddle w. large copper rivets, chromed steel
rails, no bag loops! Not sure if this is an older model. The rear
badge looks older but I'm not sure. Very comfortable and broken in but
not saging at all. Small amount of cracking around the rivets but not
serious. Minor scuffs. Super comfy. $110.00

2- Suntour GPX pedals. Ebayer is selling these new for $99 check them
out. They came with a powder coat bluish finish that was flaking off
within the first week so I stripped the rest off. Rode for one season.
Toe clip compatible. Could use some grease. Nice pedals. $40.00

3- (2) pairs of Shimano Deore XT silver skewers 135mm rears and 100mm
fronts. Good condition, not perfect but fully functioning. $23.00

4- Park rear and front bag supports w. red vinyl covering. Similar to
Riv Silver Hupe for rear just shaped differently. Front bag support
just slides over handlebars. Nice way to support bags temporarily. The
front might be a Velo Orange. Rear is definetly a Park vintage one
Both for $45.00

[RBW] Re: Slipping QR in horizontal drop out help

2012-05-07 Thread cyclotour...@gmail.com
Consensus seems to be shaping up around having steel clamping surfaces,
what are those Salsa QRs?

FWIW, I have horizontal drops on another bike running with Dura Ace Al QRs
and no slippage on that one. Gearing isn't much different, 34X28 vs. 34 X32.

[RBW] Vintage Video

Who remembers a thread from January 2008 when Gino posted links to
vintage U.K. bicycle touring videos (which then spurred several
discussions related to Rivendell vs. 1940-50s bicycle design)? This
one:

http://groups.google.com/group/rbw-owners-bunch/browse_thread/thread/13f349844c2263cc

In that spirit, did you see that a 1945 promotional/documentary film
of bicycle manufacture at Raleigh was recently released by British
Council Films?

http://vimeo.com/39401575 (17 minutes)

It’s fun to compare/contrast bicycle mass production of 1945 to one’s
favorite modern builder in, say, Toyo Japan or Waterford WI.

[RBW] Re: Weight of Hunqapillar frame?

2012-05-07 Thread Jeffrey
I'm the OP, and I take NO offense at the wieght weenie jabs!

It may be of interest to know why I asked, and its not because I was
looking for a light-weight ride. I have a black '92 Bridgestone MB-6,
and I compared the geometry to the Hunq and found that they are very
similar with 2-3 differences. So I now conceive of my MB-6 as a poor
man's Hunq (bought it for $75). To my surprise, my 49 double-butted
Tange CroMo MB-6 weighs 7.25 lbs. (fork and frame), and the 58 Hunq
weighs 9 lbs. according to this thread. What a surprise!! I wasn't
trying to see if I could shave off a few grams or anything, I just
wanted to see if I am pedaling a battle-axe around. Turns out its not
so heavy!

So go buy an early Bridgestone MB and Hunq it out! (Kidding...I'm sure
the Hunq has a much better ride).

I'll post a pic here, let me know if there's interest.

That is a great looking QB.

I second the Pauls neos' as brilliant brakes with tektro and suntour aero

more critical than you might think and I would play around with that a bit
too.

[RBW] Re: Weight of Hunqapillar frame?

2012-05-07 Thread Jeffrey
Wow, I started a thread and it went into flames...how entertaining!!

The OP not offended, so this is fun to watch. ;-)

I asked the question because I can't afford a Hunq right now. So... I
have have been building my '92 Bridgestone MB-6 as a poor man's Hunq.
I compared frame dimensions of both bikes and they are very, very
similar. I figure this old piece of tig-welded steel MUST be heavier
than the Hunq and guess what? According to the '92 catalogue on
Sheldon Brown's site the frame weighs 5.5 #'s, the fork 1.75# = 7.25
#'s. Is it possible it's really lighter than the Hunq?!? Surprising.

I'm no weight weenie, but I am glad to know I'm not riding around on a
Sherman tank.

I just received my (first) three copies and have already given them away! I
saw a guy from my LBS and told him if they ordered 10 I would buy 5. So
readable, so fun.

On Thursday, May 3, 2012 3:27:38 PM UTC-5, Zack wrote:

Just got my paper copy from amazon.

Also, just as an FYI type of thing, it *really* helps the author if you
enjoy something that you read if you leave a positive review on amazon.
The more of those that a book gets, the more likely someone from outside
the regular sphere will buy it.

So, if you get the book, and love it, maybe take the extra step of going
to amazon and leaving a review. I am certain that it would help.

If you aren't compelled to leave a review, that's cool too, but i just
wanted to make a little mention of it, as I am certain it is not the type
of thing that Grant or anyone at Riv would ever bring up, but I bet would
help out. also not the type of thing that usually occurs to me to do.

I am psyched to read it.

[RBW] Finally hit the sweet spot with my Sam

2012-05-07 Thread Scot Brooks
Pardon the instagram quality; cameras are at the office.http://imgur.com/GFvrj

I was messing around with a dry-run setup for the Seattle to Portland ride
and I think I've hit my own personal Sam Hillborne nirvana. Of course, this
only applies to the 6 day per week Seattle city stuff, but the camping
stuff can go on without much fuss. It goes like this:

700x35 Schwalbe Marathon Racer HS366 (hardly any mention of these anywhere,
but they're exceptionally good AND on sale from Schwalbe for $19.99 each at
the moment). I have the 700x38 Greenguard, but I prefer these. They just
feel right.

11-30 cassette, 8 speed. I love the 12-36 Riv standard, but it's now on the
camping rear wheel (Rhyno Lite 27mm, super gnarly)

SKS Longboards will be back on soon, but I'm just treating myself this week
while the weather's nice.

Salsa Delgado Cross 36h wheels from Jim Thill. Absolutely fantastic skill
from Jim of course. The dynohub front wheel gets to hang out in the closet
till next winter.

VO Model 6 saddle. Love it now that it's started to break in.

Medium shopsack and saddlesack xs is the best combo I've found as an every
day set up. The saddlesack large (and big rack) is just too much to mess
with as an every day thing. This is better for me. Looks good too.

Finally, my Sugino crank started life as a triple, transformed into a 36/24
double with a guard, and has now transformed into a 40/24 double with a
guard. Now I love it.

If you've made it this far, thanks for reading my rambles. There's really
only one group of people I can share this without feeling nerdy (and who
will actually know what I'm going on about).

suggest that my price was too high, only to sell the thing at my asking price

There are a lot of factors that go into it, but in Riv's case MSRP has
sometimes risen steeply, and availability of some models in some sizes has
been spotty. I always say, if the right buyer comes along, price doesn't
matter much, but if the right buyer doesn't come along, price doesn't matter

and I think I've hit my own personal Sam Hillborne nirvana.

Good eye, Mike; it is a 60cm, which I completely forgot to mention. I'm
really jealous at the jaw-droppingly beautiful paint jobs I see on here, so
I'm glad my little cream colored headtube can still get some attention.

I think a 46/30 would be awesome, especially since you could make it as
versatile as you like with cassette choice. I was thinking about putting
together a 46/36 with my leftover rings, sort of a mini-roadie-double. My
mangled knuckle is telling me to stop messing around with taking cranks
apart though, so that will have to wait till another day. I'm also a
complete novice when it comes to getting creative with cranks, so I'll
probably have some questions for you when the time comes.

[RBW] Grant's Book Tour Adventures!

2012-05-07 Thread Manuel Acosta
It was funny because I was just thinking about how his book touring was
going and pop there goes a new blug. Looks like he's having a grand old
time. His new book is good btw. Things that you get after years of
experience from riding a bike all in one book. Lots of interesting things.
If your an avid cycling or even a new to cycling this book would be good to
read. Chapters are set up in a way where if you don't want to read certain
sections you don't have to. Skip em and read them later. Being a fairly new
cyclist I'm just finally branching out to different subgroups of cycling.
I'm coming to realizations about cycling that were already written in the
book. Not only is the book a good reconfirmation on things that I do while
biking that I always felt uncomfortable about but it's helping me getting
over certain aspects of my riding now that will save me some grief in the
long run. Makes me feel better about Just Riding. (--This was intentional)
Also the drawings in the book a swanky. Anyone know the artist?

[RBW] Re: Frame bags

The bag on the hunter was made by the woman in Santa Cruz who sews awesome
hats, Randy Joe.
Those bags used snaps to connect to the frame. They were made from that
xpac ripstop stuff, stiff and light.
The fabric was very taught on the frame. It was nice.
Frame bags are usually 2inch thick.
Jandd makes one.
Rob from Ocean Air made some as well.
I've made two. They are more complicated than they look.
If you want the best, get Revelate. He has a welder now. Porcelain Rocket
