[RBW] Re: New Sam Hillborne photos
Yes I have a Hobo bag that I use when I need to carry something. I like this frame it fits me well and feels pretty solid. The handling is real predictablein fact I had a moment of inattention that found me wandering towards the ditch and I caught it just in time and the steering seemed to respond quickly but not too quickly if that makes any sense. Just a pleasant sensible frame designI think I'll put quite a few miles on it. [RBW] Re: Rationalizing a Reduction; Encourage Me
See what happens when you count your bikes!? I try to stay vague about it. As others have said, the QB would be a fantastic no-thought commuter. You can install metal fenders if you have bolt-on Phil hub - or a bit janky but useful with SKS. Maybe that could do the commute work that the Yves Gomez would do. Sell the Jamis. Hillborne is boxed, easy to sell, big-time overlap with the Atlantis. Gone. As others have said, Bleriot and Romulus have some some overlap. But the Romulus could be skinny-tired (28mm) spartan road bike, while the Bleriot could be fancy-fendered, front rando bag, Lierre-clad distance rando machine. That Rawland is a useful bike! ;) Nice to have an absolute gravel grinder with no worry about terrain for when the conditions or mood calls for it. Bombing down Mt. Tam via RR Grade is fun on those Neo-Motos. So, in summary (and this is kinda fun - thanks for the catharsis, Ray): ATLANTIS: tour, ramble, town country. Ride to Big Sur. BLERIOT: supple 650B rando-zeitgeist rig. Ride to Pt. Reyes Lighthouse, taking the dirt path through Samuel Taylor. ROMULUS: spartan road machine. Ride Seven Sisters/Alpine Dam QUICKBEAM: commuter/city/lock-up workhorse. Ride to the Mission. RAWLAND: Off-road adventure bike. Ride Hookooekoo trail. To be honest, I'd hang that YG in storage for a future high-class city bike. Esteban San Diego, Calif. Here is what I have: An Atlantis, fully rigged and used for long-distance touring; occassionally pulling a BOB trailer. A first generation Quickbeam, rigged for city commute. An Yves Gomez, rigged for city commute. A Bleriot, rigged for any kind of riding. A Canti-Romulus, rigged for roading. An un-built, new-in-the-box, Single TT Hillborne, Orange. A Rawland Sogn mountain bike, 650B (Used primarily on fire roads) A Jamis IGH commuter (my beater for city commute in rain) Here is how I see the garage after the reduction: An Atlantis (Or, maybe the Sam) for loaded tours An Yves Gomez for city commute A Canti-Rom for fast rides A Rawland Sogn for off-road -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. Re: [RBW] Re: Riv Rally midwest and Grant's visit and other bike stuff to do in Minneapolis at that time
I think it worked that time. It'll be great to ride with you, JB. Everybody who's pledged to attend this event is a true gentleman, except that one guy, but he knows who he is. Speaking of gentlemen, I'm not sure that we have any ladies planning to come. Not sure that I blame them for having other plans that conflict with riding around discussing the nuances of cantilever brake straddle hanger aesthetics for a couple days, but I hope you Riv-oriented females feel that you are welcome and encouraged to join the overnight ride, in full or in part. That goes for every demographic category, actually. The two commonest concerns I've heard are addressed here: 1. You don't need to ride a Rivendell or even a bike that is somehow related to Riv. Your bike need not be steel or have a tweed mudflap or even fenders. There will be some country roads and some hills that are substantial by Midwest standards, so I recommend some low gears and a tire that's at least 32 mm. And you'll have to schlep your stuff, so you'll need adequate cargo capacity (unless you can get someone else to transport your gear for you). Aside from those suggestions, what brand or style of bike you ride doesn't matter. It matters more to have a versatile, can-do attitude and a sense of adventure. 2. Everybody I've talked to is concerned about slowing everybody down. Good! We need slow people (like me) to keep things in the proper perspective. I figure that the fast guys and gals won't be into this, so it's probably a non-issue. We've got all day, so don't blow it by finishing early! Plan to take LOTS of pictures and to make frequent stops to regroup, chat, have snacks, occasionally address mechanical issues, etc. That said, you should be somewhat confident in your fitness to cover 50-60 somewhat hilly, mixed terrain miles in a day, on back-to-back days. If that's likely to be a hardship for you, please be sure to have some kind of emergency bail-out plan, just in case, but still feel free to join the ride. Hard to believe this is just a few weeks away. It's going to be the highlight of the Summer, I expect! -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] Re: Question regarding listing my Hunq on eBay
There is no blue book of used bike values. I know some of you gents are patient and willing to wait for minty specimens offered for 50% of retail. Others are willing to pay a bit more to avoid weeks or months of bargain shopping and haggling. I've sold many used Rivs and other desirable pre-owned bicycles, and had people on this list email me lowball offers or otherwise suggest that my price was too high, only to sell the thing at my asking price a few hours or a few days later. There are a lot of factors that go into it, but in Riv's case MSRP has sometimes risen steeply, and availability of some models in some sizes has been spotty. I always say, if the right buyer comes along, price doesn't matter much, but if the right buyer doesn't come along, price doesn't matter much. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] Re: Weight of Hunqapillar frame?
I'm the OP, and I take NO offense at the wieght weenie jabs! It may be of interest to know why I asked, and its not because I was looking for a light-weight ride. I have a black '92 Bridgestone MB-6, and I compared the geometry to the Hunq and found that they are very similar with 2-3 differences. So I now conceive of my MB-6 as a poor man's Hunq (bought it for $75). To my surprise, my 49 double-butted Tange CroMo MB-6 weighs 7.25 lbs. (fork and frame), and the 58 Hunq weighs 9 lbs. according to this thread. What a surprise!! I wasn't trying to see if I could shave off a few grams or anything, I just wanted to see if I am pedaling a battle-axe around. Turns out its not so heavy! So go buy an early Bridgestone MB and Hunq it out! (Kidding...I'm sure the Hunq has a much better ride). Wow, I started a thread and it went into flames...how entertaining!! The OP not offended, so this is fun to watch. ;-) I asked the question because I can't afford a Hunq right now. So... I have have been building my '92 Bridgestone MB-6 as a poor man's Hunq. I compared frame dimensions of both bikes and they are very, very similar. I figure this old piece of tig-welded steel MUST be heavier than the Hunq and guess what? According to the '92 catalogue on Sheldon Brown's site the frame weighs 5.5 #'s, the fork 1.75# = 7.25 #'s. Is it possible it's really lighter than the Hunq?!? Surprising. Thanks! I'll keep you posted. I need to bend the struts for my Nitto Top Rack. I'll probably do that first. Because of wear the braze-ons are on my Hilsen the rack sits much higher than needed. --mike On May 7, 9:06 pm, Stonehog stone...@gmail.com wrote: I got an extra set of 42cm struts just in case. Didn't need 'em. You are welcome to them if you try it and it doesn't work out. Brian On May 7, 2012, at 8:56 PM, Mike mjawn...@gmail.com wrote: I was wondering if something like that would work. I think I'd try it if I knew I could get extra struts from RBW. It doesn't appear they're even selling the Plat Rack anymore. Hopefully they're just out of it. I think it's a good design. I know there was some mention of Mark working on a new front rack, perhaps it'll be something along these lines except all in one. --mike On May 7, 7:45 pm, Stonehog stone...@gmail.com wrote: Mike - there is a way: http://wp.me/p1kJzU-35 Brian Hanson Seattle,WA On May 5, 2012, at 1:44 PM, Mike mjawn...@gmail.com wrote: That's great! Someone else had posted something about bending the struts to reach the fork eyelets that are used for the Mini/Marks rack, but since the Bombadil has those nifty mid-fork mounts, I thought I'd give it a try. Good news is: no strut bending required! I did have to tweak the mount on the rack itself by a mere couple degrees just to make it line up perfectly, (using a crescent wrench - kind of like the old trick to toe-in brake pads on cheap calipers) but I could have simply left it as is and tightened the bolts to bring it all into alignment. Bottom line is it works great, and frees up the dropout for whatever other junk I'll bolt on someday. And it looks good. And it's lighter. ; ) *http://tinyurl.com/7qpxysf* * * Marty p.s. [RBW] Re: Finally hit the sweet spot with my Sam
Good eye, Mike; it is a 60cm, which I completely forgot to mention. I'm really jealous at the jaw-droppingly beautiful paint jobs I see on here, so I'm glad my little cream colored headtube can still get some attention. I think a 46/30 would be awesome, especially since you could make it as versatile as you like with cassette choice. I was thinking about putting together a 46/36 with my leftover rings, sort of a mini-roadie-double. My mangled knuckle is telling me to stop messing around with taking cranks apart though, so that will have to wait till another day. I'm also a complete novice when it comes to getting creative with cranks, so I'll probably have some questions for you when the time comes. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] Grant's Book Tour Adventures!
It was funny because I was just thinking about how his book touring was going and pop there goes a new blug. Looks like he's having a grand old time. His new book is good btw. Things that you get after years of experience from riding a bike all in one book. Lots of interesting things. If your an avid cycling or even a new to cycling this book would be good to read. Chapters are set up in a way where if you don't want to read certain sections you don't have to. Skip em and read them later. Being a fairly new cyclist I'm just finally branching out to different subgroups of cycling. I'm coming to realizations about cycling that were already written in the book. Not only is the book a good reconfirmation on things that I do while biking that I always felt uncomfortable about but it's helping me getting over certain aspects of my riding now that will save me some grief in the long run. Makes me feel better about Just Riding. (--This was intentional) Also the drawings in the book a swanky. Anyone know the artist? -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] Re: Frame bags
The bag on the hunter was made by the woman in Santa Cruz who sews awesome hats, Randy Joe. Those bags used snaps to connect to the frame. They were made from that xpac ripstop stuff, stiff and light. The fabric was very taught on the frame. It was nice. Frame bags are usually 2inch thick. Jandd makes one. Rob from Ocean Air made some as well. I've made two. They are more complicated than they look. If you want the best, get Revelate. He has a welder now. Porcelain Rocket is also very good. It's possible. Use a thin high density foam layered in xpac for structure. [RBW] Re: Frame bags
and some pvc piping/welt cord on the edges before you flip the fabric. Add some 1050 ballistic on the edge touching the frame, and some thin semi-flex plastic inside to reinforce/distribute stress caused by the allen bolts. Oh, and large fender washers, or a 1.5 strip of aluminum. On Monday, May 7, 2012 10:38:55 PM UTC-7, Ely Rodriguez wrote: It's possible. Use a thin high density foam layered in xpac for structure.
