[RBW] Pic of blue bike with maroon bar tape
Greetings from Durham, NC! Someone posted a pic here earlier this year - likely Jan or Feb - of a beautiful blue bike with maroon bar tape. I thought it was Patrick, but I bothered him directly and found that I was mistaken. I am writing here hoping the poster will recognize and drop me a line with a link to the photo. Thanks! I am sorry for sending that reply to the list, it was meant for Patrick. I am embarrassed to say I am reluctantly coming up to speed with the new google groups format and how it plays with my gmail. Throw an ipad into the mix and it just makes me feel old. Looks like I need to slow down a bit a look at how it all works again. [RBW] Re: Thinking of switching handlebars on my AHH
Hi Rex, I have a Rambouillet. I recently installed VO Porteur Bars with the Guidonette brakes. This set up is the most comfortable bar/brake combination I have tried (including mustache bars, noodles, etc). It affords several hand positions, allows me to sit upright or lean over and allows braking from all these positions. It was one of those why did I not do this before? moments. Re: [RBW] Re: New 650B conversion of a 1984 Miyata 912, and a foray into tubeless
Thanks -- very instructive. Short answers, then, No and No. I'll read the ghetto methods with more care later, but for now, with the BAs so loose on the rim, fergit it. I had been under the impression that there were kits that you could apply to just about any tire/rim combination, whence my question. On Tue, May 22, 2012 at 8:39 PM, David Yu Greenblatt david.yu.greenbl...@gmail.com wrote: Patrick, No, you cannot convert any tire and rim combo to tubeless. The gold standard for tubeless is UST which stands for Universal Standard for Tubeless: http://www.mavic.com/en/technology/rims/UST A UST rim and tire combo is guaranteed to work without a tube, and sealant is optional. I used them for MTB riding and racing for years and they are great for all the reasons that Jim M and Patrick in VT and others have said. Being able to run low pressures for increased comfort, traction, and speed while avoiding pinch flats is awesome for mountain biking. The disadvantages of UST include a limited selection of tires and heavier tire weight. Around 10 years ago Stan Koziatek of Stan's NoTubes started selling products including rims, rim strips, valve stems, and latex-based sealant that allowed use of normal tires without tubes. This approach quickly gained popularity among mountain bikers and racers up to the Olympic/World Cup level. Not every tire works well with Stan's rims, however. More info on Stan's: http://www.notubes.com/helpcenter.aspx Besides using official UST and Stan's products, people have successfully converted standard rims and tires to tubeless. This method is referred by some as ghetto tubeless and the main advantage is low cost. Here is an example involving home-made sealant and strapping tape for the rim strip: http://forums.mtbr.com/wheels-tires/ghetto-tubeless-works-good-380262.html Nowadays several companies sell tubeless-ready MTB tires that are lighter than UST tires but have features designed to increase the likelihood of success when run tubeless with sealant: http://bontrager.com/technology/why_tubeless_ready Road Tubeless is a relatively new development and the selection of tubeless-compatible road tires is pretty limited. These tires typically have beads that are reinforced with carbon fiber so they don't blow off the rim when run at higher road pressures. Trying a ghetto tubeless conversion with a standard road tire is an extremely risky proposition. For 650B tubeless conversions, 42mm Hetres are relatively easy because at 40 PSI or so they are similar to MTB tires. 38mm Pari-Motos at higher pressures like 55 PSI would fall into a grey zone because few have attempted tubeless setups in that pressure range -- there is no good reason to run pressures that high on a mountain bike, and skinnier road bike tires typically require higher pressures. Getting to your questions: 1. Tubeless with 23mm road tires: If your wheels are 700C, the answer is yes, but you will have to buy a Road Tubeless tire, and use a Road Tubeless rim or a conversion kit from Stan's. If your wheels are 26 then you are probably out of luck. 2. Tubeless with wide SnoCat rims and 60mm+ Big Apple tires: Patrick, surely you recognize that you are the only person on the RBW email list who is using this rare combo, but let me Google that for you: http://letterfromaustralia.blogspot.com/2009/10/wicked-wheels.html This indicates that it is indeed possible to do a ghetto tubeless conversion of a SnoCat rim. Whether you can get Big Apples to work sans tubes probably only some trial and error on your part will resolve (tip: wear ear plugs when inflating the tire in case of blow-out). Good luck, David G, Madison WI On Tue, May 22, 2012 at 7:22 PM, PATRICK MOORE bertin...@gmail.com wrote: I like the sound of the stuff. So, to repeat my earlier question: tell me (y'all): can you convert any standard for-tube rim and tire combo to tubeless with off the shelf kit? I'd be particularly interested in converting 23 mm tires on narrow 19 mm outside width rims, and aforementioned 60mm+ Big Apples on 44 mm SnoCat SLs. If yes to either, please point me to the appropriate product website. Thanks. I go 10 to 15 psi lower with tubeless than tubed, so that should take you down to negative 3 psi. But seriously folks, ride quality, flat resistance, and traction are all better in my experience. 4 years of off-road riding with no flats makes me wish that road tubeless would advance faster than it has. I've never run over a nail, but I've run over plenty of goatheads. The hole seals up around the goathead and you can remove them at your leisure. No pinch flats.

The message was clear: the only way to be a serious cyclist was to aspire to the racing image and racing paradigms. I knew that probably was not ever going to be my cup of tea. The ensuing internet research led me to conclude that a touring bike was what I really wanted, but the only one likely to be found locally was the Trek 520, and none of the local shops I called had one in stock. Eventually, I discovered and purchased an Atlantis. That was my first truly good bike, and even though I no longer own it, it has influenced all my subsequent ideas about bikes. Whether we kike it or not, cycling is still a sport and it's not just lance wannabes who do it - the vast majority of people will never race anywhere near the elite level, let alone pro level. But they do anyway because it's fun to challenge yourself and participate in something. It's no different than any other physical endeavor - you can take it as far as you want. There's a marathon in Burlington, VT this weekend - the event is about as a good of an example as you can get of people of different abilities challenging themselves in the same race. 99% of the people who line up know they will not win the race. 100% are there to prove something to themselves without regard for winning or losing - just finishing, or setting a personal record (the PR) will be a big deal. it's very similar to randonneuring. bike racing is the same. it's all the same - we set goals and take steps to achieve them. whatever keeps people inspired and motivated, more power to them. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. Toshi Another voodoo datapoint from me. My Hilsen with Pari Motos has been parked for a couple months. I've been using other bikes for the little riding I've been able to do this Spring. Based in part on this conversation, I decided to use my Hilsen this week. Since it was parked for a couple months I did need to pump up the tires. They were both down at about 25psi, and I pumped them up to 40psi in front and 45psi in back. I did the 1.5 mile ride from office to BART in South Hayward and the 1.5 mile climb from BART to my house in El Cerrito. That was fine. This morning I did the ride in reverse, and I had to walk the last tenth of a mile because my rear tire was flat. I've done the same commute 100 times on my Bombadil with Hetres this year and 1000 times on various bikes over the last 8 years. This was my first time to walk it. It's really like voodoo. [RBW] My new bike build
Greetings from Durham, NC! At long last, I am happy to be able to share a new bike build pic with you. It's not a Riv, but I hope you'll indulge me nonetheless. :-) Why is new in quotes? Well, my Surly LHTrucker isn't new, it's a 2007. And, I didn't buy it new, nor is it even new-to-me, I got it in 2009. But, as some of you may know, the maroon 2007 Truckers had notoriously bad powdercoating. It was already flaking badly when I bought it in Feb 2009, so going into the purchase, I knew I would ultimately want to re-powdercoat the bike. And, in the few years since, I have learned a bit more about my cycling, and improvements I would like to make to the bike. First, I wish it had a kickstand plate like some other well-designed bikes we know and love. And second, I really missed the stem shifters to which I grew accustomed while riding my old Panasonic. So, I added an upgrade project to the inevitable powdercoating project and this spring, I had shifter bosses added to the headtube and a proper kickstand plate added where only a kickstand plate ought be added. The build was just completed by a local shop (wish I knew how to do such things - someday maybe) and they sent me a pic. I pick up my Trucker this evening. It will be a struggle for me to be anything but worthless this afternoon. :-) Riv content: Silver shifters, Newbaum's bar tape, Nitto bar end plugs and the Just Ride spirit. My new blue Trucker (with maroon bar tape) can be seen here: http://goo.gl/ddroS Cheers Jack -- Jack Warman Durham, NC -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] front derailleur cage tweaking
Ok, One bit of a tuning issue I'm having with the new bike, thought I'd see what the group suggests... Setup: 56 Bombadil 650b frame, 107 SKF BB, with a Sugino XD2 crank (48/36/24 rings). Rings clear the frame nicely (more clearance than my Ram has running a DuraAce Octalink triple). The front derailleur is a Shimano Deore LX, and I'm using DA 9sp barcons. The cage on the FD is for a triple, for a 48tooth ring. It has a good matching arc, and the tail-end of the cage clears the chainstay, no problems there. The problem I'm having is, on the granny ring, and the amount of travel in shifting (or rather, the zone the derailleur travels when shifting). I can center it up on the middle ring, and shift up to the big ring, no problem, back and forth. But, it's hard to get it to shift all the way down to the granny. And, it's really easy to overshift on the upshift, clean past the big ring and take the chain off the front, dropping onto the crank arm. Trying to adjust the tune, cable, set screws, etc., with the derailleur all the way towards the inside, the cage is just keeping the chain from easily dropping to the granny. I'm half tempted, to try to but a bit of a bend into the cage, to get the bottom of it to sit closer in towards the seat tube; then, have the shift lever not bottomed out, but moved further in, before I lock down the cable, so that when I shift up, it runs out of shifting range before it throws the chain. [RBW] Re: Pari-Motos and flats (was Re: New 650B conversion)
Got it fixed. The size and shape of the hole looked like a glass puncture. Found the tiny place in the tire where the glass peeked through and blew back out. Patched it up and I'm rolling again. Just bad luck in Hayward. On Wednesday, May 23, 2012 9:36:15 AM UTC-7, William wrote: Toshi Another voodoo datapoint from me. [RBW] Re: front derailleur cage tweaking
When you shift up to the big ring, how close is the derailleur to the ring. You want to get it within 5mm. The other issue may be that the BB is too long. You mentioned having lots of clearance, you probably should have very little clearance. Do you have the option of experimenting with a shorter BB? I had a similar problem on my tandem, w a super record derailleur, and found that a shorter BB a ring with ramps pins solved the problem. I love how all of Brooklyn is lumped in as hipster and cool. Hilarious for those of us who live in the thoroughly uncool areas like Bay Ridge where Coors Lite rules, that is in south area of Bay Ridge. [RBW] odd knocking sound on front end - ideas?
I rode the Rambouillet on my morning commute today - something I normally don't do. I usually ride another bike. I got to my destination and realized there was an odd knocking sound coming from the front of the bike. When I use the front brake firmly and un- weight the rear wheel it clicks/knocks a single time and feels like the bars/etc shift forward. A slight pull on the bars toward myself results in the opposite happening. I could be imagining the movement but not the sound nor the click. Any idea what could be causing this? I checked the front brake it was tight and aligned. The front pads are secure and aligned right as well. Are they grabbing the wheel then sliding with the fork flex? The stem is in good condition and tight The brake levers don't move and they are tight. Headset loose? It isn't visibly. I'll check when I get home - and recheck the rest of the things. The odd thing is that it made a single click and it must click forward before clicking backward to replicate it. Any ideas as to what is going on here/what else to check Thanks JL -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] Re: odd knocking sound on front end - ideas?
If it is a loose headset you should be able to grab the front brake hard and push the bike front-back-front-back and feel the click and the knock. Let go of everything and bounce the front end on the ground and you should hear the rattle. If that's it you may be able to grab the front brake hard with your right hand, and put a finger from your left hand between the lower headset cup and the fork crown race and feel the gap open and close when you push the bike front-back-front-back. Since they're fairly flat they'd still raise me up more in the aft position than in the fore position (unlike my current bars, which drop just enough to be nearly equal). [RBW] Re: New 650B conversion of a 1984 Miyata 912, and a foray into tubeless
To me, road tubeless has most of the disadvantages of both clinchers and tubulars, without enough benefits. Clinchers with tubes are easy to service, easily available at many price points, and come in a wide range of widths and casings. Tubulars aren't cheap and take some time and care to glue up, but allow for lighter wheels, including carbon rims with a much greater safety margin than carbon clinchers, ride more comfortably for a given width, and don't pinch flat easily. Road tubeless requires tires that are not easily available locally for most of us, aren't cheap, have few choices, require clincher rims that aren't as light as tubulars, can be a pain to get mounted and sealed, are a mess to deal with if a repair is needed on the road, and won't quite ride like tubulars. If I had the cash to spend, I'd rather ride some light carbon tubular wheels (ideally with disc brakes), use Tufo tape for mounting, and carry a little bottle of sealant than mess with tubeless. I don't, so alloy rims, clinchers and tubes are where I plan on being for quite a while to come. Re: [RBW] Re: New 650B conversion of a 1984 Miyata 912, and a foray into tubeless
All this tubeless talk reminds me, i have a set of 700c tubeless wheels that came off an old Stowe of mine. I cant see ever using them, anyone want them for say $30 bucks? They defintely need new tires and glue, shimano 600 hubs with small block cluster. Why so cheap you ask? Because they were included with the bike, I am never gonna use them and if someone wants them shipped it is gonna cost a bit I figure. Local pickup in Brooklyn for same price though. New derailleur, had the block with the guide sticker in place, I centered it between the lines, so it should be 2-3mm; the BB is a 107, there isn't shorter. (I actually wondered if a longer one would put the crank a bit further out, so it'd actually line up on the granny better, but, it's an SKF, and I like the Q, so, I'd rather deal w/ the derailleur instead... Seth, hadn't seen that; I'd thought of trying to take the shell shims for the clamp, and putting both on the far side, so it'd shift it closer to the seat post, since the adjustment screws didn't shift it enough, but I'll go through that and see if I can get it to behave better... Re: [RBW] Bosco bars have arrived...
Indeed, it's a week to Chicago. Maybe longer, with all the Bosco madness. I have placed my order, though, and expect to be riding with them next weekend at the latest! I confess I am less enthused about the Bosco's looks than I am about, say, well, every other bar RBW has sold to my knowledge. But we're talking rise! backsweep! space! In use it should prove all an Albatross is and more. My only questions now are: 1) what kind of shifters to use? a) stem Silvers b) SOS c) Shimano on Thumbies 2) what grips? a) Dia Compe dark wood b) Miesha's cork c) Newbaum's over corky-tape 3) What kind of covering? a) none b) Newbaum's c) sew-on leather d) tan corky-tape e) wrap-on leather 4) forward-mounted interrupter levers? a) Paul's b) none Actually, that's a lot of unknowns. The only knowns are the bar and the brake levers (Paul Love Lever 2.5s). [RBW] Re: front derailleur cage tweaking
Whoo-boy... Okay, I've read though that, but still didn't solve it... Derailleur is, 2mm, above the big ring when out that far. Cage is correctly rotated, so the outer plate is parallel to the chain. But with no cable tension, even with the cable removed and the L-screw turned to ring the plate inward as far as possible, it's still not inward enough... Thoughts I've had: Shim the derailleur to angle it such that, keeping the cage parallel to the chain, the bottom edge of the inner plate is swung towards the seat post; Remove the seat post shim from the derailleur clamp, then double it on the left side, leaving it off the crank side; Bend the cage so that it is closer to the seat post; Any better ideas? -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. Leslie, sometimes a bit of 'cold setting' of the derailer cage can improve its performance.
