[RBW] Re: Riv Wrap Fest in Seattle
That was awesome Brian! Thanks so much! I could not have done that without your and Bruce's help. At least, not in one afternoon. ;) Mine came out a bit wonky, but not bad at all for the first time. The hands-on workshop idea worked out fabulously. I suspect there will be more. It's a great way to learn stuff and fun to hang with other Rivendellians. Lots happening on my bike this weekend--going back to Gran Bois Rando bar and ErgoPower brifters from 46cm Noodle and Silver downtube shifters--I tried!, and trying out a new old SunTour front derailleur I got from Rob M., to see if it'll shift the TA Pro Vis triple better than the DA 7800 series that came with the bike. Now the question is, to shellac or not to shellac? Amber shellac muddied things up considerably, in my off-bike test. Thanks again Brian! Not feelin the B68 love? I too prefer the B17, but I have always especially liked the B67 and B68 for around-town, and yet wondered whether they'd be too wide for longer, harder riding. Re: [RBW] jack brown's
I used JB Greens for about six months and they are good tires, but for my money I'd choose a Kojak (330 grams with kevlar belt and beads, $60) at a close to true 35. Or, I'd go to the other extreme and look closely at one of the Grand Bois tires. For errands and commuting the Kojaks roll very well and seem far more flat free than the Paselas I've used and than the JG G's. Note: the K's are not like a top of line racing tire, but they are as close as you can get with a puncture belt. [RBW] Re: Joe Appaloosa stretching it's 1/2 mile chainstays on Mt Diablo
The derailleur cables down one side are because it was only designed around a rear derailleur only setup. The 2nd one on this bike is because there is a rear brake hanger connected to the mount for the cable stop adjuster. This shot shows it well. http://www.flickr.com/photos/olipop/8419516496/sizes/o/in/set-72157632621944748/ It is a pretty awesome solution. Another solution would have been a clamp on cable stop http://www.rivbike.com/product-p/ca6.htm which would have kept the cables seperate but the braze-on might have been exposed. Re: [RBW] Re: Okay I get it now.
Anecdote, illustrating how *not* to carry your pets: When I was married my wife and I owned a tandem, to which I fixed a milk crate to carry our two Shi Tzu, fastened down with shortened leashes. One one early ride the female decided to take a dive over the side and ended up hanging by her neck down the left side of the bike, kicking madly. Of course I panicked and hit the brakes, whereupon we all fell over -- on the left side. The dog and the wife were, luckily, not hurt, but it was close. I suffered the usual abrasions and bruises. [RBW] FS: 61cm AHH F/F/HS/BB and 63cm Backroads Chimayo
Hey Group, Up for sale is a used 61cm AHH F/F/HS/BB. Its Toyo built, if that means anything. Repainted Butterscotch. Its 'creamier' in life than in the photos. definitely used, never abused. It has some paint chips here an there that i covered with nail polish. Some chainsuck chips and a little wear on the inside left chainstay from tire rub I guess. I sometimes squeezed 42s, so that is my only guess. There is also some shellac residue on the headtube and a little on the DT and TT. Headset is FSA almost brand new, oldish BB but still is smooth.Asking $1100+ shipping.Would like to sell in the Bay Area if possible. Also have a 63cm backroads Chimayo. All Tange double butted Tubing. replaced the fork with a new one. I still have the old one, but the newer allowed way better clearance. Rides really great Same deal. Now the question is, to shellac or not to shellac? Amber shellac muddied things up considerably, in my off-bike test. I always use clear shellac. [RBW] SFR Lighthouse brevet
--Lots of Rivs and it was nice to put some faces to the names on the list. Some highlights from my ride (I rode with my buddy Randy): [...] Last year, I went way too fast on the first climb up Sir Francis Drake. I was in my middle ring and I should have been in my granny. Well, this year, I learned from last year’s stupidity and climbed in my granny. That proves that even dumb animals can learn after being beaten up. We met a very friendly rider on a black Italian touring bike named Manny. He ended up pulling several of us along on the way to the lighthouse and I was very grateful. He was a strong 68 years old after completing 8 passes on the Alta Alpina last year. I felt like I was 80, so it was great to have a younger guy pulling me along. [...] The slog up Hwy 1 to Marshall was crazy windy, but Randy was strong and did most of the work up there. The clam chowder was divine and tailwinds, tailwinds on the return. Did I say tailwinds We cruised to Fairfax and got some coffee and cookies at a nice shop with bike racks in front. We started a trend and several non-SFR cyclists popped in. We took it easy the rest of the way, since it was starting to darken, and I was the only one with a real light. I realized that I was riding the whole way with my dynamo light on all day, but nobody ran me over, so I guess the extra watts of output were worth it! Thanks. I actually bought a discount Herse a couple of years ago and got a big rack and custom bag to carry Nico, but he didn't like it and I found that I didn't like the big front rack and front loading -- even on a Herse. The Timbuktu looks like a very good solution since (1) I don't need a dedicated bike setup and (2) I hear that animals feel more secure if they are nestled against you back. Re: [RBW] Re: Okay I get it now.
One advantage of the front-mount solution to consider is that having your dog in front of you will allow you to talk to and pet him/her etc and thus help ease any anxiety. I have trianed my 15 lb terrier to ride happily in a front wald basket (either rack-supported or with the wald struts -he's too heavy for any cantilever or hanging options) and being able to pet him and give him encouragement - I actually fed him small treats every few minutes in our first rides around the block - was a huge help in getting him comfortable. -Pete in CT On Monday, January 28, 2013 2:04:56 PM UTC-5, Patrick Moore wrote: Thanks. Re: [RBW] Re: jack brown's
Mike, thanks for the response. I have ridden Pasella tour guard and regular pasellas for the past several years. I noticed an immediate improvement in fun when I switched to regular' pasellas from the tour guards. I have ordered the jack brown greens due to this need for fun rather than a puncture proof tire which I find no fun. Obviously, there's a compomise inherent in any choice; were I using the tires for touring, I'd opt for the Panaracer Pasella with Tour Guard. But for every day riding, I'm looking for something more fun. Maybe the jack's will prove more fun even than the regular pasellas. Having said all this, I've been very happy with the panaracer pasellas, and wonder why Riv no longer sells them. Probably pushed out by all those Schwalbes I don't want. Re: [RBW] jack brown's
Actually, the Maxy Fasty and Nifty Swifty were the original tire to use this combination of width and tread pattern (same tread as the Rolly Polly/Ruffy Tuffy, but wider) , dating back to when first rolled out their 650b tire line (2006?). Re: [RBW] Re: jack brown's
I ride the Pasela TGs right now because I got a set in 32 brand new with my used Ram. Despite being slower I loved my Roughy Toughys in 28 and will probably order JB Blues when these Paselas wear out. I just like the idea of a longer lasting tire and the dead feel some talk about feels smooth to me. I love the smooth tread on the Riv tires too. I don't want anyone to think I dont like them, I just assumed they were slow due to that old Jan test. I might prefer the tougher tires because I'm 6-6 190. Also, fixing flats in the rain is not fun to me. That probably has something to do with it too. - Ryan On Monday, January 28, 2013 1:43:58 PM UTC-8, john wrote: Mike, thanks for the response. Dirk didn't like riding in the trailer but then I tried riding with him in a messenger bag and he seemed to like that because he was next to me that seemed to calm him down. I'm very happy with the bag, it's not perfect but works well enough. I wish there were more pockets for storing things like tools, tubs, dog treats, leash, etc. There is one pocket in it but if that's packed it pushes up against Dirk. --mike On Monday, January 28, 2013 9:18:45 AM UTC-8, Patrick Moore wrote: Great. [RBW] Atlantis cockpit change...
Yesterday I decided to see how the low trail Atlantis would feel with the Grand Bois Randonneur drop handlebars that Jan so highly recommends. While I haven't been able to get comfortable on any of my Riv bikes with Noodles for a variety of reasons (hand neck/shoulder pain primarily) and had switched on all my bikes except for the Hilsen to either Bullmoose (standard) or Bullmoose Bosco bars, as part of my research on low trail bikes, I had come on an article by Jan where he stated that low trail bikes handled better with narrow handlebars whereas higher trail bikes favored wider ones. I had also heard during a fitting that if the handlebars were too wide, they place more stress on the shoulders (don't know if it's true or not), and have to say that I was quite intrigued by the shape and characteristics of the Grand Bois randonneur. I had tried the wider Nitto Rando bar on the Altantis, but hadn't quite agreed with it. I ordered the GB Randonneur bar from Compass Cycles ( http://www.compasscycle.com/handlebars_gb_rand.html) as a last chance experiment with drop bars and mounted it on a 7cm Tallux stem with the appropriate shims as apparently there isn't a 25.4 Tallux in 7 cm available. I mounted the Tektro TRP Ultra-Ergo Road Brake Levers ( http://www.rivbike.com/product-p/bl6.htm?1=1CartID=1) as I like their shape very much and proceeded to mount the whole setup and connect the brakes. I first tested it with only the rear brake connected just in case I found out I didn't like it at all, but the first impressions were positive so I decided to complete the setup and tape the bars with a roll of padded Cinelli cork tape I had lying around. This tape is quite thick and cushi, and very comfortable. I positioned the bars almost to the full height of the quill in the Tallux stem, but ended up lowering them slightly. Right now the saddle is pretty much in between the top and bottom of the drops. I went on a 45 minute test ride around Palo Alto and Stanford University with my son and have to say that I was extremely impressed with the new cockpit and how the Atlantis now handled. Very light and intuitive handling, the narrowness of the bars actually felt quite good with the low trail handling. If I'm on the tops I'm pretty much as upright as I was with the Bullmoose bars and if I stretch my fingers I can be totally upright. As I move my hands along the horizontal top to the angle and then towards the hoods and finally on the hoods, even though I continue to lean forward, it didn't become uncomfortable or painful. I can easily place my hands on the drops and placing them on the straight end on the drop is very comfortable. I had not trouble on discomfort on any of these positions and found that on all of them, the bike handled very well. I rode the bike with no bags or any other loads other than a water bottle, and was quite surprised at how fast I was going (compared to my usual speeds) and how agile and smooth the bike felt. I'm sure that part of it was the added front weight that my posture created compared to the weight distribution when using the BM/Bosco bars, and I'm sure it also helped with the muscles involved in pedaling. I felt I was flying and could take tight turns very easily with no apparent effort. This week I'll commute on the Atlantis and see how I feel with the new cockpit. There's no rain in the forecast, so since I haven't yet added the fenders, I should be OK. I'll add the R14 rear rack so I can use my SaddleSack in the back with the PlatSack on the front to carry my stuff. Max cush: Lizard Skins DSP 3.2mm. Cover it with Tressostar if you must, but it's the cat's meow. I've now got it on 3 bikes out of 4 (2.5 on the Rivs; the 3.2 on the Fargo). They also make a 1.7, apparently, tho' I've not seen it -- might be just right for road use. Narrower bars: FWIW again, check out the Grand Bois Maes parallels. I have them on two Rivs. I suspect that the Randos -- a bit less reach and, importantly, with the upward flare -- might be best for the Ram whose build I am procrastinating. [RBW] Re: Forward rocking vibration with long reach brakes
Thanks all- I had some luck today by straightening out the brake itself and matching the timing of when the pads were hitting the rim. I think I will try and bring the brake closer to the fork crown and might even try the Sheldon nut if I have no luck there. For all that the internet is, I am so thankful for this place of cordial encouragement, mutual celebration, and helpful people. I took it to a mechanic I work with and he basically said that it was something that happened with long reach brakes, v-brakes, anything with a long arm design. I feel skeptical. Thanks for your help- let me know if posting a pic of my current set up would help- I gotta believe they can function better than this. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] Re: Helmet recomendations
I am definitively unracer in all my other stylings, but I also sweat like Patrick Ewing and I love my Giro 'Atmos'. The ventilation is superb, and it's a great combo of minimally feeling like something is on your head, while also appearing to be plenty protective. I tried Nutcase once but felt like an overheated dufus, the overheated part most significant. [RBW] Re: jack brown's
My Univega beater came to me with Armadillos on. And I must confess that in five years of city riding I have NEVER had a flat. That's impressive. Also, the tires rarely even need pumping; they stay hard for a very long time (don't ask me how). But I've always had this nagging feeling that the bike can feel a lot better than it does, and I blame the tires. Pedaling this bike is like, there's no momentum and it starts slowing the instant you stop pedaling. Well, I do have the lighter replacements now (a Pasela and an older IRC Duro II in great shape) and I'm anxious to put them on...in spite of the probable drawbacks. I want to find out what this bike should feel like. Joe On Jan 28, 7:13 pm, rob markwardt robmar...@hotmail.com wrote: I, too, am happy to ride my Schwalbes and Tourguard tires. Re: [RBW] Quickbeam/Simple One Gearing Ranges?
I believe the QB (and by extension the SO) can handle up to an eight tooth cog difference. So you could for instance use a 32/40 and 16/19 White Industries hub to get four gears (I do this on my QB wannabe Surly Crosscheck, but it's only good up to six teeth--I run 34/40 x 16/19 on that) Eric Daume Dublin OH On Mon, Jan 28, 2013 at 7:22 PM, allenmichael allenmich...@mac.com wrote: Currently, I have a S1 set up simply with one in the front and one in the back. [RBW] 700 x 32 tire recommendation, please...
Folding Panaracer pasela tour guards. Perfectly light, cushy, and puncture resistant, and most importantly: cheap. My next set will be Jack Browns or Marathon Supremes neither of which really are really cheap. But I rode some roughy toughies in 28 that I liked so much I'm going to give the JBs a try. This is my 3rd set of Pasela TGs, 2nd in 32mm. The one knock on them is they do wear out eventually. - Ryan -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group.
