Re: [RBW] Hunq and Hilsen on Ebay

2013-03-03 Thread Eric Daume
OK, I have to say I'm tempted by the Hunq (extra diaga tube and all). But
I'm a little confused by Riv's sizing recommendations. I'm 6'3 with a 91cm
PBH/81 cm saddle height. I asked the seller, and he's almost my same size
(6'3, 92cm PBH).

Riv says:

*58cm Hunqa: 87.5-93cm PBH (Saddle height 76-84cm, standover on biggest
tire is 87.5cm)

**62cm Hunqa: 91.5-100cm PBH (Saddle hight 82-90cm, standover on biggest
tire is 91.5cm)

*which would put me squarely on the 58. But then they go on to say:

*Basically, the Hunqapillar is easy to size. Nine in ten riders can go by
the following:*

*Under 5' 6 : 48cm
**5'6 to 5'8 : 51cm**
5-9 to 5-11: 54cm
Long-legged 5-10 to 6-1: 58cm
**Long legged 6ft to 6-4.4: 62cm
*
Which would put me on the 62. Any other data points out there?

I'm concerned about the standover on the 62cm. I have a concern on the 36
standover with the 62cm. I mocked that up last night with my 62cm
Crosscheck resting on a few pieces of wood, and it was tight!

Back from the bike shop, where I purchased a set of 0.6mm shims ( 75 cents
a piece!). My past experience has been that this prevents the chain from
being sucked down between the middle and inner rings. My favorite mechanic
suggested a trick that should help with the gymnastics of holding all the
parts together during assembly. Put a bit of greese on the spacer to hold
it in place.

I run a 9 speed chain with a 9 speed cassette. I have never seen this
crank listed as 8 speed only.

Re: [RBW] Re: Latest BLUG post (2/28)

2013-03-03 Thread Eric Platt
While I haven't used hydraulics, will agree with Jim they seem the most
maintenance free and probably the bestest choice for winter riding in
places like Minnesota. Tried cable pull discs one winter and it was not a
good thing. Snow/slush gummed up the caliper right quick. (Might have been
bad luck on my part. Others have had no problems.)

My city bike has cantilevers. Never had a problem of adjustment in
winter. Abrading through a rim, yes. Diving under, no. Pauls are extra
nice due to the sealed springs.

For other city biking likes - flat bars, but not as swept back as the
Albatross or Bosco. Want some weight on the front wheel for control on ice
and snow. Fenders, yes. Aluminum for extra width, but think plastic might
survive longer being banged around. Dyno hub, but willing to forego with
the newest recharables. Tires - 38 to 40 are fine. Gears - my city bike
is a 1x9. Definitely rear rack (my preference in handling and setup) and
at least one Blackburn bottle cage that can hold a coffee thermos.

All that said, my SimpleOne was used a lot last year as a city bike and it
has drop bars, no dynohub, no full size rear rack (swap saddlebags with the
Nitto grip) and only one gear. Great bike, but don't end up carrying as
much on it and usually avoid the steepest climbs in St. Paul.

I have bled hydraulic brakes for others. It only takes a few minutes.

Re: [RBW] Hunq and Hilsen on Ebay

2013-03-03 Thread Tom Harrop
I guess it depends on what you want to do with it. Maybe the lack of
standover isn't an issue, e.g. if you want it for touring. I have a 68 cm
Bombadil with barely any clearance and it doesn't matter in the slightest
for touring, commuting etc., but I've been ogling that 62 cm Hunq as a
dedicated MTB with loads of standover (PBH 101 cm). Having said that, I
think you'd better buy it to keep me on the straight and narrow...

What do people think of the asking price ($1400)? I thought maybe it was a
little high.

Re: [RBW] Re: Latest BLUG post (2/28)

2013-03-03 Thread ascpgh
I agree a Quickbeam is a fabulous commuter, in the right circumstance. I have
to have some gears in my terrain, the varying weather, the seasonal ebb and
flow of my riding stamina and the physical exhaustion of the day (or night)
makes them a must. Not all of them get used by a long shot, but this is also
the bike I ride on the roughest surfaces, going back to the rationalization of
its purchase and selling off the hard tail MTB and permanently loaning my
too-small XO-2 that I had been using before.

My experience with the mech disk brakes is different than Jeremy's. For what I
get in all-weather function, the wear issue is easily within expectations.
Three sets of pads over seven years daily use. No more frozen rim brake pads
when trying to stop the second time (anyone else had that thrill?). Maybe it's
just my set up and use, but I have few complaints given that the bike was an
experiment for disk brakes to start with.

Last year at a local metric century which took every opportunity connect lowest
to highest points in the three rivers, my friend and I were on the highest
elevation facing a four mile downhill in absolutely pouring rain, he on his
open wheel Richard Sachs CX with cantilevers, me on my fendered Rambouillet
with Shimano double pivot side pulls. I was stunned by the comparison to my
commuter's disks in such conditions. On a workday I have no choice if pouring
such as that, I just go and never consider the higher weight of that bike as
loaded or my expectation of the brakes will both modulate and stop. My calipers
under those conditions were near uselessness, my friend wore through his front
and back salmon pads in that one paved road descent despite no actual signs of
useful friction either.

An ideal commuting bike is very much a product of the conditions in which it
will be used and the shape that I am in when I ride it, expected variances in
both being anticipated. Unlikely that anyone could dictate the design of a
commuter precisely to the expectation of everyone. If it is your daily driver
then you have a lot of time while riding to be thinking about what would be
better about it. Most product managers would shrink from any findings from a
focus group of n=1. Beauty of this list is that number is a bit larger but
still of some cohesiveness, and even this audience would not be impressive to
the MBA-types that get involved in product development once the sums at stake
are beyond those of the founders/craftsmen/zealot visionaries.

Re: [RBW] Latest BLUG post (2/28)

2013-03-03 Thread PATRICK MOORE
This has become a very interesting thread. I'm surprised at how many
choose single speeds, fixies, or at least prefer simple drivetrains.
Me, I chose fixed simply because I love riding fixed -- I had the '03
Curt custom converted locally to a fixed drivetrain when I converted
it from 1X10 gofast to daily commuter.

Several said that choice depends on circumstances (as well as
preferences); true, too. The Novara Fusion that I bought for a friend
late last year is actually a very decent commuting bike (8 speed hub,
dyno hub + front and rear lights, disks, fenders, chain guard, rack,
bell, belted tires and thorn-proof tubes, all this included, but no
damned suspension or other unecessary gimmicks) but, even if one
prefered this genre, trying to schlep such a thing up several miles of
hill, or against a stiff headwind for several miles, would (IMO)
quickly drive one to despair. (I put ~12 miles on it myself, longest
ride 10 miles).

That said, for short, flat, slow cruising with a lot of stop and
start, I can see that a fully dressed Yves or Betty or Sam with
Albatrosses might be nice -- after all, there is no reason why even
short distance utility bikes can't be very nice ones. And I realize
that some on this list ride such bikes far longer distances than I do
mine.

Keep the opinions coming! We should start a photo library of Rivendell
commuters. (A few years ago on the Boblist I set up a library of
beaters if anyone wants to see it. Some interesting bikes and a huge
variety.)

Next question, class: what is the worst commuter that you've ridden?

Re: [RBW] Re: Latest BLUG post (2/28)

2013-03-03 Thread Robert F. Harrison
I agree that a Quickbeam is a great commuter. I have both a QB and a Hunqa
and the QB is my commuter of choice unless I'm actually hauling stuff
around in which case the Hunqa can't be topped. I'm glad not to have to
worry about shifting in traffic when I really should be paying attention to
something else. I don't have a lot of hills on my current commute which is
actually ridiculously short (though I add several miles to my return
journey just because), but I've never had any real trouble climbing with my
QB, it just takes a different approach than with a bike with lower
available gearing.

Aloha,

Bob

On Sun, Mar 3, 2013 at 7:00 AM, ascpgh asc@gmail.com wrote:

I agree a Quickbeam is a fabulous commuter, in the right circumstance. I
have to have some gears in my terrain, the varying weather, the seasonal
ebb and flow of my riding stamina and the physical exhaustion of the day
(or night) makes them a must. Not all of them get used by a long shot, but
this is also the bike I ride on the roughest surfaces, going back to the
rationalization of its purchase and selling off the hard tail MTB and
permanently loaning my too-small XO-2 that I had been using before.

My experience with the mech disk brakes is different than Jeremy's. For
what I get in all-weather function, the wear issue is easily within
expectations. Three sets of pads over seven years daily use. No more frozen
rim brake pads when trying to stop the second time (anyone else had that
thrill?). Maybe it's just my set up and use, but I have few complaints
given that the bike was an experiment for disk brakes to start with.

Last year at a local metric century which took every opportunity connect
lowest to highest points in the three rivers, my friend and I were on the
highest elevation facing a four mile downhill in absolutely pouring rain,
he on his open wheel Richard Sachs CX with cantilevers, me on my fendered
Rambouillet with Shimano double pivot side pulls. I was stunned by the
comparison to my commuter's disks in such conditions. On a workday I have
no choice if pouring such as that, I just go and never consider the higher
weight of that bike as loaded or my expectation of the brakes will both
modulate and stop. My calipers under those conditions were near
uselessness, my friend wore through his front and back salmon pads in that
one paved road descent despite no actual signs of useful friction either.

An ideal commuting bike is very much a product of the conditions in which
it will be used and the shape that I am in when I ride it, expected
variances in both being anticipated. Unlikely that anyone could dictate the
design of a commuter precisely to the expectation of everyone. If it is
your daily driver then you have a lot of time while riding to be thinking
about what would be better about it. Most product managers would shrink
from any findings from a focus group of n=1. Beauty of this list is that
number is a bit larger but still of some cohesiveness, and even this
audience would not be impressive to the MBA-types that get involved in
product development once the sums at stake are beyond those of the
 founders/craftsmen/zealot visionaries.

[RBW] Re: ISO spd-to-clip-and-strap pedal converters

2013-03-03 Thread Manuel Acosta

I've used these on my old college road bike.
They work okay. A tad hard to flip into. There isn't much of a tap for the
foot to flip into the cage. The screws have a tendency of unscrewing if you
don't lock tight them. I found myself using these more then my clip-in. So
I ditched the whole system together and just went flat pedal.

That best-of-show time-trial bike isn't my cup of tea, but it seems likely that
its builder demonstrated considerable skill in building it. There are a lot of
skilled artisans exhibiting at NAHBS, and I imagine picking a winner across a
huge range of styles is difficult, not to mention subjective. That said,
there's no particular reason why a NAHBS-winning bike has to have anything in
common with a Rivendell.

Attempts to categorize bikes drive me a little nuts. How can you define a city
bike by specifying particular wheel sizes or components or accessories? My
bikes have more to do with my tastes and preferences than they do with the fact
that I ride them in a city. Furthermore, I don't own a bike that can't be

Good points, Jim.

I think it's just our nature to try to put things in little boxes. If we

Is a bomb-proof, 26-wheeled, fendered, fully-lit, racked, 5 speed bike
better?  Maybe, but for whom?  Personally, I don't need all that;
someone else may.

All of this, circling around to NAHBS, shows that we all like to dabble
in the what if. I went to NAHBS to two solid days last year; I saw a
huge variety of ideas. Some of the stuff is artsy, look-what-I-can
build kind of stuff; other bikes were so well designed that it's hard to
believe anyone could ever come up with anything better.

When you come right down to it, who cares who wins what category at
NAHBS? Everything that won something was exquisitely built, a lot of it
is innovative, and some of it was actually practical. It's all
subjective, but I'm glad it's all being done. The industry is blooming

 (6'3, 92cm PBH).

 Riv says:

58cm Hunqa: 87.5-93cm PBH (Saddle height 76-84cm, standover on biggest tire
 is 87.5cm)

62cm Hunqa: 91.5-100cm PBH (Saddle hight 82-90cm, standover on biggest tire
 is 91.5cm)

which would put me squarely on the 58. But then they go on to say:

Basically, the Hunqapillar is easy to size. Nine in ten riders can go by the
 following:

 Under 5' 6 : 48cm
 5'6 to 5'8 : 51cm
 5-9 to 5-11: 54cm
 Long-legged 5-10 to 6-1: 58cm
 Long legged 6ft to 6-4.4: 62cm

Which would put me on the 62. Any other data points out there?

I'm concerned about the standover on the 62cm. I have a concern on the 36
standover with the 62cm. I mocked that up last night with my 62cm Crosscheck

2013-03-03 Thread Edwin W
The ideal for me is what I am building my new (to me) Hillborne into:
Flat pedals so I can wear whatever shoes I am wearing.
Fenders - longboard
Dyno: never going back. Lights always on front and back
Racks fore (Gamoh porteur (thanks for all the suggestions) with Wald 139
basket) and aft (Public bikes rack with spring)
Alba bars (upright is all right)
8 speed on back 11-32
40x26 + chainguard with no front derailer- essentially a 1x8 with a bailout
option. If I am using the 26 more than once a week (month? year?) I will
consider a front derailer
38mm tires
Brooks saddle

So many of these are personal choices I know. But this is a customization
group, isn't it??

Looking forward to finishing up in the next two weeks.

Re: [RBW] Front Rack ideas

2013-03-03 Thread BenG
I don't think it's a 2-strut. Take a close look at the drop-bar Atlantis
photo under Our Bikes at rivbike.com - that front rack is a pannier rack,
with a triangulated deck; wide, closed frame on the sides; and a loop at
the bottom. And it's different from the rear one.

[RBW] Re: Sugino crank question

2013-03-03 Thread Bill Lucas
Michael,

I had the chain suck with a number of RD2 cranksets. I found that the
index mark on the middle chainring needs to be at 1:00 when the arm is at
12:00. If the index is at 11:00, then shifting pins occasionally grab the
chain.

Regards,
Bill Lucas

luck, or is this a widespread experience?

apparent that not only had the vast majority of our rides (bike,
motorcycle, skateboard, snowboard...) started or ended over coffee,
but many of our good friends and riding partners were met at the cafes
we were frequenting. We had a pretty good network that spanned darn
near coast to coast. An Association of Caffeinated Wheelmen I
blurted out while simultaneously sketching out a logo on the

Fast forward to about 6 months ago, I was digging through some piles
of artwork looking for something, and stumbled on my original sketch.
All of the patches and hats we had originally done up were long
retired, lost, or given away...so I got in touch with some of the
original ACW's and told them I was going to mint some lapel
pins...everyone chipped in to beat the minimums.

Our whole thing was very tongue in cheek, but we wanted it to have an
old money-secret society-unleash the hounds type of feel to it.
Anyway after finding the iBob's / ROB's and meeting so many awesome
people and reading about the network that exists between the riders, I
thought it would be cool to expand the ACW.

It's all for fun and conversation, and really just a bit of decoration
for the bags, hats etc...but wanted to offer them up. I have @ 20-30

We were also contemplating doing up some patches too?

Andy,

Nice blog article and nice thread. If this family cycling business is a
possibke direction for Riv then I don't think the thread is OT. Here's a
link to a flikr set I have been accumulating of 'family cycling' far away

May be of some interest and perhaps inspiration...

Looking back at these bikes they are rather 'Riv-ish' in their organic,
make-do approach! And the people depicted were living car-free back in the
'70s and '80s!

No! That's too good of a story. What an exciting day.

On Saturday, February 2, 2013 8:06:36 PM UTC-7, hangtownmatt wrote:

Last January my wife and I happened to be in Berkeley and stopped by
Rivendell to take a look at the Betty Foy. I wasn't interested in a new

time I wouldn't even look at anything with 2TT's, so they set me up with a
1TT 65cm Hilsen; hard to believe now there ever was such a thing. We did
not have much time that day and left without a purchase. The following
March we had another opportunity and set up an appointment for an extended
test ride. I was right up front with Rivendell and told them that I,
personally, wasn't in the market, but wanted the opportunity to test ride
something; anything; their choice. When we arrived I was given a 60cm
green 2TT Sam Hillborne. We took off for an extensive 4 hour test ride.
I had never felt more comfortable on a bike. The handling was superb. I
felt as though I could do anything and/or ride anywhere on that bike. To
make a long story short we came home with Betty and Sam Hillborne frames
that day. I wasn't influenced by looks, price, the RMW Owners Bunch, 2TT's
or anything else. I simply liked the fit and ride. Since than I've put
almost 4,000 miles on the bike and have only ridden my former favorite
once. I've also grown to appreciate the novelty of the 2TT. Not sure what
it adds or detracts from, but I'm happy with the ride handling
characteristics and it is kinda clool having something a little different.

[RBW] Re: Association of Caffeinated Wheelmen lapel pin UPDATE

2013-03-03 Thread Rusty Click
I'm good for 3 pins, and 3 patches, if they come through!

Thanks for the work on this, now, where's my coffee?

OK I wanted to give an update on this project.

A new batch of pins has been ordered and I was given a 4 week delivery

awaiting my invoice to determine pricing adjustments.

I have also sent the artwork for getting a quote on patches. Luckily they
do not have to be ordered in high quantity. Pricing and availability TBD.

After a bunch of research it looks like Bigcartel is the perfect solution
for handling the orders. THANK YOU Brian (Benedikt) for that suggestion!!
 Free pin for you!

I am in the process of setting up the storefront and when the product
arrives, I will add the inventory and post the link here. Simple add to
cart and pay. I'll add patches if/when they happen.

 Cheers!

[RBW] Re: OT - Family Biking

2013-03-03 Thread bwphoto

Thanks for posting this Smitty...I have enjoyed reading several family
riding blogs each one taking me back to the early days of family riding as
I am sure is the case with some of the other old folks here. We really
didn't have much in the way of resources or products to carry our kids...just
thishttp://www.mudguardsandinnertubes.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/08/il_fullxfull.278031558.jpg.

I remember returning from SE Asia and feeling like I was in a diferent
world when returned to KU for grad school...there were bikes everywhere,
when just four years earlier there were only a small handful of us. When
Cannondale came out with the
Buggerhttp://www.mudguardsandinnertubes.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/08/cannondale_1980_catalog_145.jpgin
the earlier '70s things started to change, we bought one right away and
soon had a small group of young families who loved to ride like us joining
us on weekend bugger rides. We were all hopeful that some day moving around
by bike would not be sen as an oddity but rather a normal and sensible way
of travel.

Our kids had the same sense of excitement as we pulled them around behind
us as I have read about other families with their long tails. All of you
young families are doing more in your everyday kid and cargo carrying
errands to demonstrate how to *Just Ride*, hopefully the momentum will
continue to build, I'd really like to see the results in my life time.

Keep it up and remember it really boils down to Grant's fundamental thesis
that riding is all about moving ourselves under our own power and enjoying
it in the process. Thanks for indulging me in my memories it is heart
warming to see how far we have come.

Re: [RBW] Front Rack ideas

2013-03-03 Thread Minh
i don't think that's right, if you look at that atlantis pic here,
http://www.rivbike.com/product-p/f-atlantis.htm (first one), notice the
front rack has a bar in the middle, and also notice the rod that goes from
the midfork brazon to the rack, the rack has a corresponding tab to bolt
the rod.

it's kind of like the mt campee rear, but again not an exact match, still
not sure which rack that is!

btw the older big front racks will fit some bikes without the p-clams, it
fits mine but i can't explain why.

[RBW] Re: Sugino crank question

2013-03-03 Thread dougP
On mine, the chain gets caught between the middle ring chainstay. When
this happens, the chain is on the inner ring at the top but the section
that's disengaging from middle to inner gets stuck between the stay the
middle. Visually, there appears to be more space between the inner
middle rings than the middle outer rings.

Mine is an XD with flat rings (no ramps or pins), with a 110 mm BB. I'd
thought that next time I need a BB I'd go up to a 113 to give the chain
more clearance with the stay. Agree that Sugino's hidden bolt is a PITA,
and serves no useful purpose.

[RBW] WTB- Sugino XD2 Crank Triple (driveside)

2013-03-03 Thread Adam
Hey all,

I've finally concluded that the incessant clicking on my pedal stoke has to
do with my damaged drivetrain crank arm. I've tried pedal washers and tons
of grease and still the clicking continues. For those that are wondering
I've done a full process of elimination with bottom bracket and pedal
possibilities.

So...I need a new crank for my drive side. If anyone happens to have an
extra single crank arm I'd love to purchase it. Otherwise also interested
if anyone has a set. I have chainrings so am covered on that front. They
measure 6.5 inches on the inside and 8 inches on the outside. Is that 170mm?

Thanks,
Adam

[RBW] East Bay Mixed Terrain Ride Recap

2013-03-03 Thread Manuel Acosta
Over the course of riding my bike, I have gotten to ride on a bunch of
different terrain. Sometimes with the appropriate tires and gearing, most
of the time not. On these adventures I was lucky enough to share it with a
variety of different great people. It's always good to see those different
people getting together and having a good time.
Bill, Sean, Tom, Dav and I take it to the hills pass Sunol. At Sunol we say
hi and give a good luck pat on Mayor Bosco. Sunol's actually mayor for a
good number of years, now turn into beer tap. We met up with Ted who rode
from Livermoore. Ted being the local took charge of taking us through the
beautiful riding in near Sunol. We descend down from the ridge into the
valley to climb back to the ridge to check out the abandon and haunted
Rancho. We get back to Palomares road and we surprisingly met up with Adam
and Adam other Rivendell posters on a ride for a picnic. They take the dirt
road up to the Rancho as we rode down into the town for lunch. The ride
plan was to Walnut Creek but it ended up being a bit too ambitious. Great
time.

Pictures proved that the ride was savage:

Re: [RBW] Roadeo geometry specs

2013-03-03 Thread Addison Wilhite
I have had one as well. It is essentially the Serotta fit (my lbs is a
dealer) but it's generally a good process/series of questions/conversation
that brings in your own riding goals and style, flexibility, etc. I found
it to be a good baseline for seat tube and top tube but given that I still
have different a slightly different setup for the handlebars including
height for all of my bikes based on how they are ridden. Even my gunnar
crosshairs and sport are pretty different based on how they are ridden.
Plus there is the type of bar/shifter setup can make hand positions
something to play with of course.

I think it's a good idea to have it done but I never went in feeling like
it was going to be magic. Although, I should also say I had my first fit
for my custom Della Santa and it is still the most extraordinary riding
bike I've ever been on.

Regards,
Addison

have different a slightly different setup for the handlebars including
height for all of my bikes based on how they are ridden. Even my gunnar

Plus there is the type of bar/shifter setup can make hand positions

I think it's a good idea to have it done but I never went in feeling like

[RBW] Is there a spare 42T 110 BCD chainring in Berkeley/North Oakland?

2013-03-03 Thread BSWP
I'm downgrading the gearing on my LongLow, from a 50-46-28 to a 46-XX-24,
and looking for XX = 42.
These are on a Ritchey Logic crankset, 5-hole 110 BCD. I just searched my
spares, and no 42 or 43.
Some very old BioPace rings, though... yikes.

Ideally someone nearby has one sitting there, and would like to trade it
for some cash.

Thank you!

 Hey all,

I've finally concluded that the incessant clicking on my pedal stoke has
to do with my damaged drivetrain crank arm. I've tried pedal washers and
tons of grease and still the clicking continues. For those that are
wondering I've done a full process of elimination with bottom bracket and
 pedal possibilities.

 Thanks,
 Adam

So glad we ran into you Manny. Hope to catch you for the ride next time.

Bill, Sean, Tom, Dav and I take it to the hills pass Sunol. At Sunol we
say hi and give a good luck pat on Mayor Bosco. Sunol's actually mayor for
a good number of years, now turn into beer tap.
