With your Stan's filled tubes, does the latex fluid stay fluidish, or does
it dry out like what happens in tires? I've thought about doing that, but
don't know if i have to keep recharging w/ fresh fluid like I do tires.

[RBW] Re: Another dirt road exploration.

Excellent report and pics. Keep 'em coming. --Smitty

My friend Ed and I got out yesterday for another dirt road exploration
yesterday, again on our singlespeeds. We took the Max train out to
Hillsboro from Portland where we headed into Banks for a few miles on the
Banks Vernonia trail before getting onto some rural gravel backroads. Due
to the wet weather we didn't have to contend with dust or even thick mud,
just rim eating fine grime. The road we were exploring was Strassel Rd
which was pretty nice. While it was steep in parts and forced us to walk
here and there, it would be no problem on a geared bike. There was very
little traffic and no rabid dogs. It was definitely beautiful in spots but
as always when on back roads heading out to the coast, sections of clearcut
here and there which are rather depressing. We enjoyed a nice descent on
Strassel Rd which spilled us out onto Timber Rd where we resumed climbing
although with no need to walk. Timber Rd is fantastic, probably one of my
favorite roads in the area although just far enough away that I don't ride
it too often. There was minimal traffic which included a few logging trucks
but they generally gave us a wide berth. We rode into Vernonia for coffee
and lunch and then returned to Hillsboro via the 18 mile Banks Vernonia
 trail and then back roads.

 The proof:

 http://www.flickr.com/photos/41335973@N00/sets/72157633053478798/with/8576784877/

I definitely want to do some more exploration into the coast range as
spring moves along. There's definitely a lot of potential for dirt road
rambles although without a car there's just no way of avoiding long days on
the road which isn't necessarily a bad thing.

Oh, same as last week. Neither of us were on Rivs but there were plenty of
RBW purchased accessories. I wouldn't hesitate to do this ride on my
Hilsen. I just ended up riding the SS again in solidarity with Ed whose
 geared bike (Rawland) isn't running.

It stays fluidish longer for sure inside the tube. My tubeless 29er seems
to dry up @ 4-5 months, but I have a set of 700c tubes I did almost a year
ago and they're still wet but don't seem to pool up. I figure if I can get
a riding season out of a tube, I'm cool just making a fresh one when it
does go flat/dries out. Considering the number of thorns I pull out of the
tires, I'm happy with how well the Stans works. I top off the PSI maybe
every 3rd ride, but rarely have they full on flatted.

I did have one debacle when I decided to refresh the sealant in a tube
that flatted...I had forgotten that I originally injected it with a Blue
Bontrager sealant (crappy stuff btw) and I added Stans. Apparently the 2
liquids did not play nice together and created a solid mass inside the
tube! Not the normal Stans boogers...the tube looked like a snake that had
just eaten a mouse! Maybe there IS truth you shouldn't mix dark and light
elixers. I should have a beer and think about it.

2013-03-23 Thread jinxed
Agreed. I'm not expecting or insinuating that going 650 on this will
drastically transform the bike. But having ridden both wheel sizes with
multiple different tires, I find the 650b feels more efficient on the
smooth stuff. I did not measure the actual difference, but the 650x41
inflated on a wheel sitting next to the 26x1.95 (49) was certainly taller.
I'm sure this would vary considerably depending on the actual inflated
tires being compared.

My buddy LOVES converted old Stumpys! As for conversions, I've only done a
27 UJB to 700c. It worked out really well with only changing the wheels
and adding a long reach tektro sidepull.

Mongo and I have done numerous 26to650 conversions. Everything from a 1983

I actually only use about 1-1.5 oz in the 700c / 26x1 tubes. I have a Stanz
quart jug that I dispense into a 2oz squeeze bottle with a yorker cap. I
cut the tip off the yorker so it essentially threads down onto the valve
stem. I barely file the top off the valve stem so I can remove the nut, let
the core drop down just inside the tube and squirt the sealant in while
pinching the core to prevent it from falling into tube. I do all this with
the tube laying flat on the table so if the core falls all the way out of
the stem into the tube it's easy to work back into place. I can do a set of
tubes in @ 10 minutes. I also dig into the wifes nailpolish and paint a
stripe on the valve stem just below the cap so I know I've sealed it. I
rinse out the 2oz bottle and just reuse it for the next set.

nut, let the core drop down just inside the tube and squirt the sealant in
while pinching the core to prevent it from falling into tube. I do all this
with the tube laying flat on the table so if the core falls all the way out
of the stem into the tube it's easy to work back into place. I can do a set
of tubes in @ 10 minutes. I also dig into the wifes nailpolish and paint a
stripe on the valve stem just below the cap so I know I've sealed it. I
rinse out the 2oz bottle and just reuse it for the next set.

[RBW] FS: Rivendell Assembled Albatross Upright Handlebar Setup - Nitto Stem, Shimano Brakes, Cork Grips, Silver Supermix Bar End Shifters- New $190 obo

2013-03-23 Thread mbh

$190 obo

Rivendell Assembled Albatross Upright Handlebar Setup - Nitto Stem,
Shimano Brakes, Cork Grips, Silver Supermix Bar End Shifters- New

This handlebar setup was originally built and installed by Rivendell. The
parts are in new pristine condition. It was installed on an A. Homer Hilsen
build (this frame is also for sale, please contact me for pricing/photos
etc. if you’re interested). However, the bike was never used and ended up
sitting in storage for a number of years. I can potentially split these
components up but it would mean cutting off the beautiful cork grips (and
twine wrapping job from Rivendell) from the handlebars. Without tax, these
components were purchased for $246 from Rivendell and I’ve noticed some of
their prices have since gone up. At $190, this handlebar package is a
great opportunity to upgrade a current setup or complete a build with this
Rivendell-assembled setup.

That said, if you really don’t think you want all these parts as a package,
email me which parts you are interested and I can send you a price. However,
I’ll give preference to those who just want to buy the whole package.

Re: [RBW] Re: Scratching an itch...26 to 650b All Rounder...with PICS!

2013-03-23 Thread PATRICK MOORE
I've done the valve core insertion myself, with Slime. I just force the
locknut off with pliers and let the core drop into the abyss of the tube --
it's easy enough to work it back up once you're done. Of course, if your
tubes have removable cores, you are all set.

FWIW, I tried inserting Slime tin a small slit in the tube but never could
keep the surface free of the gunk, and it absolutely repels patches.

But here is my question: how do you get sealant (Stan's, fwiw) into a
*tubular tire* that doesn't have removable valve cores? -- Particularly if
the tires are narrow racing tires and too shallow to let the core drop
fully into the carcase? It's largely this that is holding up the final
build of my Ram -- while I wait for my brother to bring back an inexpensive
set of clincher wheels from LA.

[RBW] Seeing if any SF Bay Area web friends want to go riding when I visit the area this week

2013-03-23 Thread James Warren

Hey Everyone,
I'll be figuring out some kind of fun riding, probably with my Hunqapillar, on
Tuesday and Wednesday of this coming week. I might even do an overnighter
Tuesday night, maybe at the Marin Headlands Hostel. Also thinking of exploring
the dirt roads on the Peninsula like Montebello and Alpine. But I'm open to
anything. Anybody want to join in?

2013-03-23 Thread René Sterental
Midweek it'll be impossible for me, unless you end up in the South Bay
around 5ish and wish to take a slowish ride from San Jose to Palo Alto
along the Bay Trail. You could take the train to San Jose and meet me on
the Guadalupe Trail, but with the plans you have it's not such a hot
option.

perfect for multi-surface type riding.

[RBW] Dahon Folding Bike For Sale

2013-03-23 Thread Eric Norris
OK, perhaps not the most Riv-ish bike in the world, but a great little
bike--particularly if you use BART or other public transit. Folded down, it
fits in places your AHH or Atlantis never will ...

Riv members who aren't local can contact me for shipping cost (price quoted is
for local pickup in the Sacramento/Davis/Dixon Metroplex).

Offered for sale is a Dahon Curve folding bike, in near-perfect condition.
Cool-looking curved aluminum frame, Sturmey-Archer 3-speed shifting. Fully BART
compliant for use on their trains at all times (including commute times when
normal bikes are not allowed). Folds down in a few seconds, adjusts to all size
riders.

Bought this in 2007 after seeing one in a bike shop in Belgium, but it has been
ridden not nearly enough to justify keeping it around. Comes with the
rack-mounted trunk bag *and* the cool soccer ball bell, purchased at a tiny
hole-in-the-wall bike shop in Paris, France.

Official info from Dahon, including detailed specifications, is here:
