[RBW] Re: Good candidates for a Riv-izing?

2013-05-01 Thread Chris Lampe 2
Another option is to start with a new frameset and build it up with the
components he would eventually transfer over to a Rivendell. I've been
doing this with my old Trek hybrid and it's now an extremely comfortable
and versatile bike. I finally decided the frame geometry isn't right for
me so I bought a 2012 Handsome Devil frameset (modeled after Grant's XO-1
and the same geometry as the Bridgestone RB-T and the Rivendell Legolas)
that will be built up with my components. It's not quite into riv
territory geometrically speaking (Riv's tend to have longer chainstays,
lower bottom brackets, slacker angles and road bike trail) but it's a big
step in that direction compared to what I'm currently riding.I have
high hopes for the frameset and if I like the changes then I'll know that
I'm heading in the right direction by coveting a Rivendell bicycle. I'm
sort of testing the waters without having to make the substantial
investment that is a Rivendell frameset.

stone toward a possible Riv purchase, and was wondering what y'all would
recommend as a good frame candidate. We have a number of fixie-oriented
folks in our urban environment that tend to prey on lugged steel in the
secondary market (no offense to these fine citizens, but their interests
have changed the marketplace somewhat as to particular Schwinn's, etc.), so
I thought I should get some help with a wider range of ideas.

The only things that I'd recommend swapping out on a stock LHT would be the
bars for a pair of Nitto Noodles.

I have a Hilsen and love it but for the past couple of months my LHT has
been my go to bike. I sometimes wish I had gone with the 26 wheeled
version just so the bike would be a little more different. With Schwalbe
Mondial tires in 2.0 it would be just a tad more capable off-road although
the lower BB might be an issue. Still, couple with 48cm wide Noodles...
seems like it would make a great all-road hauling machine.

[RBW] Re: Good candidates for a Riv-izing?

2013-05-01 Thread Christopher Murray
There are still NOS (new old stock) steel mountain bikes on eBay. About 4 years
ago I bought a 1996 Trek 930 still in the box. It was $150. I put on albas,
fenders, b17, mks pedals, and a new stem. Most of the stuff I already had-
total cost was $200ish. An amazing bike and MUSA! The only thing that is a
little weird is the fork is 1 1/8 threaded so stem options are limited.

I thought this was a pretty amazing deal and has become my do anything bike. I
often grab it instead of one of my Rivs.

Cheers!

Re: [RBW] Favorite pedals?

2013-05-01 Thread PATRICK MOORE
Back when I used clips and straps I liked the MKS GR-9 platforms (for more
casual riding in boat/moccasin-type shoes) and the MKS touring pedals (for
more grip).

The MKS top o' line track pedals (Keirin approved!!) were also very nice
but I found them too narrow for the bunion on my right foot, at least with
straight up-and-down TA Cyclotourist crank arms.

My brother loves old mtb pedals from the '80s and very early '90s and old
BMX pedals.

Now it's Shimano (accept no substitute) spds and Looks.

Re: [RBW] Headsets and bottom brackets, sexy reliable vs. cheap reliable what's your take?

2013-05-01 Thread PATRICK MOORE
BB: I have tens of thousands of miles on several Phil bbs (and hubs) and I
don't think you can go wrong there, but while I don't share Jan's
deprecation of Phil products, I'd also consider Compass Bicycles' SKF bbs.

Headset: the only hs I had index on me was a loose ball Dura Ace hs; quite
possibly because I overtightened it and it was on a mountain bike, but --
OTOH -- I didn't treat it differently from any other mtb headset. Sample of
1, so take it for what it's worth.

The '99 Tange Rollerball and the '03 cartridge Ultegra on my Rivs are still
as new.

Segway: Is it correct, what I hear, that old Campy steel loose ball hs last
forever?

On Tue, Apr 30, 2013 at 12:07 PM, jinxed hbcl...@yahoo.com wrote:

The headset in my AR had been feeling ratchety for a while and then the
bottom bracket started giving me the grit so I decided to give in and tear
it down for some TLC. The good ol shimano UN53 had pooped out after
countless miles serving umpteen bikes and the headset cup was notched as I
expected. Since I had the frame all torn down I decided to send it off for
a makeover while I pondered the replacement parts.

My initial thought was to add a little chi-chi and spring for a Phil BB
and a King headset. These are often the exemplary put them in and forget
about it items, though they will make an initial dent (cavern) in the
 wallet.

On the bottom bracket, I have not quite mentally committed to the Phil
since a UN53 is less than a 4 pack of Duvel and will last 10 years like the
last onebut for something that is completely hidden from view that Phil
sure does have some allure! I suppose it's fair to include the weight
savings and MUSA in the price all things considered.

I was pretty settled on the King headset, but then decided to dig around
in my parts bin thinking I had some 1 sets floating around. I knew I had a
bunch of random HS parts, but wasnt sure if any were complete till I found
this! A basically NOS Dura Ace
 HP-7400http://www.flickr.com/photos/42027576@N00/8695512917/in/photostream/lightbox/
 .

OK so now I have perfectly usable and honestly period correct HS I could
use on the AR, but it will obviously need more attention than a modern
sealed setup. I have to admit I'm a bit lazy when it comes to routine caged
bearing maintenance and I never avoid getting the bike sloppy.

I'm curious what you guys think on the matter of old school caged bearings
vs sealed, and boat anchor shimano BB's. And also, for those who have gone
the full monty with a phil TI spindle...do you have any creaking issues?

The 12K and 8K Phils on my custom Rivs are ti with aluminum cups. No

Note: very little rain riding, though.

[RBW] Re: Packing a bike for train/bus travel

2013-05-01 Thread Takashi
Patrick,
Sorry for being late.
I'm trying to write about packing bike, but it's hard to describe about
bicycle (even in Japanese), and I have no idea when I can finish it.

Meanwhile, you might read the following article, in which a friend of mine
has written in his blog about packing his bike.
It's written in Japanese, but photos will give you an idea.
http://cycling451.blogzine.jp/blog/2009/11/post_1175.html
His bike has small wheels, but it's not a folding bike, so packing it is
not different from regular bike.
I remove fork from frame, but he doesn't, which allows him to pack quickly
(less than 10 minutes), but he cannot pack his bike as small as mine.

But you had better contact railroad companies first, since some companies
allow bicycle with minimal disassembling, as Jim points out.
Or not disassembling at all, as seen in Rivendell People video. (Starting
at 22:00)

My brother once had a run-in on a bike with a bunch of drunk teenagers.
After being mass attacked he took his XO-2 and clubbed the principal

the windshield when a passer by came to help. Damage was a broken rear

[RBW] Nice to Ride the Bombadil again..

2013-05-01 Thread Kelly
Well it's great to ride the Bombadil again.. it's just a ride like no other
bike I have.

I got the fenders on and then the large rear rack was to short to be
mounted. Trying to figure out how to or where or what to use for extenders
to raise it.

I need to stretch the leather on the B17 since it's making some noise.
(hate doing that)

Have to mount the front lowrider to check clearance then cut the fender
stays if all looks good.

Get the E-Delux head light I loaned out back. Get that mounted --- oops
need rear rack solution before light mountings.

Clean up the leftover wax in places I didn't buff out.

Little crap... but it's useless without lights.

I did get to ride it to lunch today which was sweet.

Here it is so far.

Re: [RBW] Favorite pedals?

The shoe side of SPDs offers a nice platform, and the dual-use design is
appealing; plus, the darn things just look good. I don't know whether I'll
clip in again any time soon, all the same. The MKS touring pedals are
classics, I agree; weirdly (I admit), I've been looking at MKS folding
pedals (FD-7), which also offer a nice, flat platform at more or less the
weight of a Grip King. I'm riding the latter right now on my new Hillborne,
and love 'em.

increase re-sale value of the bike if you ever decide to move it on. Not
that much more spendy than a high end Cane Creek HS. It's a no brainer :-)

The Phil BB is a tougher call. Shimano cartridge or NOS cone style is as
good, and maybe better if you ride in the muck (Phil doesn't have seals on
the cartridge, only on the bearings themselves). That said, I have tens of
thousands of miles on them combined on different bikes with zero problems.
That's in dry SoCal though. If you want high-end plus weather resistant,
get the SKF as mentioned by others.

David

countless miles serving umpteen bikes and the headset cup was notched as I

I knew I had a
bunch of random HS parts, but wasnt sure if any were complete till I found
this! A basically NOS Dura Ace

Re: [RBW] Ride Report: 3 Days in Purgatory (Canyon)

2013-05-01 Thread Deacon Patrick
I never went fast and kept it very slow in the steep parts. It's simply a
matter of feeling the nuances of the traction through the bike, something I
imagine riding barefoot helps with. Tires are Schwalbe Duremes, so not
super aggressive (by mountain bike standards), but they have some decent
lugs on them.

Weight on the bike helps too. The parts I walked down, and watching my kids
walk theirs down, the bikes were definitely sliding a lot. Weight of the
rider really helped.

Thank you, Takashi. I wish this was a problem I had to contend with. The
trip we just took showed me more clearly how wimpy my brain is. My wife
came it from a short trip to the grocery on our way out of town and the
scents from just being around others inside clung to her and messed me up

been able to do the trip at all. I can only imagine what a few hours or

His bike has small wheels, but it's not a folding bike, so packing it is

I remove fork from frame, but he doesn't, which allows him to pack quickly
(less than 10 minutes), but he cannot pack his bike as small as mine.

But you had better contact railroad companies first, since some companies
allow bicycle with minimal disassembling, as Jim points out.
Or not disassembling at all, as seen in Rivendell People video.

[RBW] Re: Good candidates for a Riv-izing?

2013-05-01 Thread Chris Lampe 2
I agree. An LHT is a fantastic option to Riv out. Pretty much the only
reason I didn't choose a LHT was that it's head-tube angle and fork rake
combine to give a trail measurement in the mid-60's, which is where my
current bike is and I want a trail measurement of 60mm or less. My bike
originally had 74mm of trail and a new fork changed it to 66mm and it was a
night-and-day difference for me, so high trail is definately not for me. I
figure I might as well drop into road bike trail measurements
(58-62mmwhere most Riv's fall).

[RBW] Riv Suggestion Box: San Marcos

2013-05-01 Thread Doug Williams

I’m looking at getting a San Marcos from Rivendell soon. Of course, I would
REALLY prefer a Roadeo, if only I could find another $1,300. But I digress.

As a big Rivendell fan, I have to say that the one annoying thing about the
San Marcos is the lack of anything (other than the very small print on the
chainstay) that mentions that it is a Rivendell. Well, we can’t do anything
about the decals (they have clear-coat over them) but what about the
headbadge? Couldn’t Riv put a Rivendell headbadge on the San Marcos for
those frames purchased from Riv HQ and fully assembled by Rivendell elves
with all parts purchased from Rivendell?

Sounds petty, I know. But reading the web, I am not the only one with this
petty hang-up. A Rivendell headbadge could be a big incentive for people to
buy the San Marcos from Rivendell instead of Amazon (or wherever).

I hear that a blow dryer will soften up the glue and allow the San Marcos
headbadge to be easily removed and replaced with a Rivendell one. J Of
course, I don’t know what the Riv contract with Soma might say about this.

[RBW] Re: Riv Suggestion Box: San Marcos

2013-05-01 Thread Cyclofiend Jim
Historically, the only bikes which have/had Rivendell headbadges were the
custom frames or the Generation 1 Rivendells (Longlow, Road, AllRounder,
etc... frames). With the introduction of the Atlantis, they all had
model-specific headbadges - e.g. Atlantis, Rambouillet, Romulus, Quickbeam.

The headbadge for the San Marcos is SOMA-specific, though I think they are
using different ones for most of their other models - a stylized Rising Sun
with the SOMA logo below. The one which appears on their site.

From the beginning, Grant was pretty clear about his role in its design,
but also about the fact it was a SOMA Fab project. The chainstay used to
state explicity it was a GP design.

Arguably, better than a headbadge, you could get the larger size and end up
with the now-wholly-Riv-identifed double top tube - as Soma states:

The 59 and 63cm have that Rivendell double top tube to restore the
triangulation lost with the tall top tube.

I hadn't actually seen any commentary on the web, but then again, haven't
really sought it.

I weigh 250 and I can trackstand for a minute or so.
I'm going to go ride my bike, and see what I do at lights when I don't
trackstand. I think I often just dismount, with the right foot on the
ground, left foot on the pedal at 10am, ready to power down. On the
kickoff, I rise up onto the saddle, and catch the right pedal with my foot
as it comes over the top. The only downside is that the Brooks nose bolt
might catch a back pocket, but that hasn't happened in years.

If you want to stay on the saddle, can you tiptoe the left foot, and lean
farther out a bit farther to get the tripod effect with less stretch? I
need to test this myself, to see if it even makes sense.

Off to the ride the bike and eat some lunch,

We just got back from a grand few days in Eastern Colorado mini-canyon

20-25% grade (yes, I measured it). I was able to ride down most of it. On
our full day there we got all the bikes down to the canyon floor, rode the

Pushing the bikes by their handlebars as my only contact eliminated the
geometry of seat and pedals and I got a very direct comparison of the
responsiveness and feel of the bikes. The Hunqapillar simply went smooth,
agile, quick, willing. All the other bikes were sluggish, dull, less
responsive or too responsive. No doubt size difference was still a factor,
 but the difference was striking.

2013-05-01 Thread Michael Hechmer
I have good experience with the Cane Creek headset, and they have dropped
the price to $65, so it's hard to see how you could go wrong there. I have
both PW tange bb and they both seem to work well. The only reason not to
buy White is the limited lengths. I think a lot of this depends on where
and how much you ride. If you are going 10,000 + K in the NW, and riding
long brevets or remote tours, then take Jan's advice. I find doing 6 to
7,000 K in VT doesn't require that hi a level of technology. The part that
I trade up on are: chains that don't rust (Conex 908), parts that shift
better (good rear derailleurs; parts that combine comfort performance
(good tires); and parts that add comfort - bars, levers, saddles. I
prefer low maintenance hubs (White) but it's not that big a deal.

countless miles serving umpteen bikes and the headset cup was notched as I

2013-05-01 Thread jinxed
You guys are awesome. The comments in this thread are the exact same back
and forth going on in my head.

Living with the male h shiny gene mutation can be difficult and it's
nice to have a support group.

Jim your point on the phil from a practicality standpoint hit home pretty
square. Pun. I had flawless service from that Shimano BB for so long I cant
even remember when I got it. Hard to argue with that. I'm glad to see some
alternatives being mentioned too...Tange, Origin8, and I'm embarrassed I
had never even heard of SKF. I also remembered that VO had one too. Added
bonus is that all of those are compatible with my Park BBT-22 and save me a
good chunk of change.

As for the headset...David hit that one on the head for me. The Dura Ace is
cool, but my attitude on it was that it would do. It occurred to me that if
it already had a CK HS in it, I would not be needing to replace it, nor
would I ever consider changing it. Again difficult to argue.

So with these recent revelations and some creative financial thinking, I
decided I had saved enough money that I should buy some VP Gripster pedals
so I could get free shipping on a Just Ride patch. That makes
senseright?

@MikeI'll leave the color a surprise! Soonson.

[RBW] Re: Riv Suggestion Box: San Marcos

2013-05-01 Thread jpp
I feel like they originally mentioned possibly rebadging them AMOS to
differentiate those that were bought through them.

On Tuesday, April 30, 2013 3:17:25 PM UTC-4, Doug Williams wrote:

I’m looking at getting a San Marcos from Rivendell soon. Of course, I
would REALLY prefer a Roadeo, if only I could find another $1,300. But I
 digress.

As a big Rivendell fan, I have to say that the one annoying thing about
the San Marcos is the lack of anything (other than the very small print on
the chainstay) that mentions that it is a Rivendell. Well, we can’t do
anything about the decals (they have clear-coat over them) but what about
the headbadge?

2013-05-01 Thread Michael

Just get a Sam. There is only a 325$ difference between them for the
frames. If you are gonna get a Riv-build, they are still only about 325
different total for the complete bikes. Problem solved. You can get a Riv
 for the same price basically.
The Sam has a much prettier curve to the fork, and better paint job too.
More eyelets, etc. Definitely worht waiting to save up 325 more bucks.

My 1998 LongLow has always shimmied on descents - yes, I like to take my

a set of the new hotness needle roller bearings would be a good thing to
try. Placed an order, and coincidentally dropped the forks out today to get
the canti boss fixed (by Ed Litton, in Richmond CA). Loe and behold... what
do I see at the bottom of my headseat, but a needle roller bearing, with a
brinnelled race.

I'll look at it all more closely this weekend.

fenders, racks, seat, hbars, pedals, and wheels.

FYI... I would not recommend riding the dog with any sort of scent

From the pics I've seen, camping out your back door doesn't look too
