[RBW] Re: Quickbeam vs. Simpleone: What's the difference?
Congratulations on picking up such a neat bike. I'll add to the quotes StatrixBob provided, with the description below which is from the Riv site, and a post here on the ROB by Grant about the differences below that. The HTA on the QB is 72.5 if you go by the geometry chart, and I think the tubing may have been slightly lighter. Rear Spacing: 120mm. A good width for a single-speed. Tubing: Butted CrMo steel. The butts are 0.9, the bellies, 0.6, the seat stays are 0.9, so are the chainstays, and the fork is 1.1 x 0.8. If those numbers mean nothing to you, rest assured that they mean something to me/Grant, and they are good. Top tube upslope: 2-degrees. Other geologicametrical features: Like all of our bikes, the SimpleOne has a relatively shallow seat tube angle (72-deg in most sizes), and moderate head tube (also 72-deg). The BB drop is 73 when the wheel is centered in the rear dropout. This is a hair higher than our normal frames, but accounts for the possibility of a fixed gear and the higher clearance requires. And yet, it is still low-to-medium by industry standards. From a post here by Grant: On the plus side: The clearance is more than on the QB. The chainstays are longer. it has a kickstand plate. The fork crown is swirly-girly. The rear dropouts are the same (our own) model as the Q's and the angle is the same, so it should be doublable with the pads still one the rim. But we're selling it as a ONE speed frame, and what you do with it is up to you. We have QB cranks, though. The fork rake is delightful. It's not a crafty artisanal frame in the megabuck showy sense, but some details could certainly shame some frames that cost thrice as much. I'm looking forward to mine. RE: [RBW] Re: Quickbeam vs. Simpleone: What's the difference?
I had both (the SimpleOne has since decamped to D.C., as my son's commuter). If I rode them back to back, the QB felt a tad quicker/lighter on its feet, the SO a bit more laid-back and comfy. SO had 38mm Marathons, QB Jack Brown Greens, which probably accounted for most of the difference. SO was built up with heavier parts, too. But really, much more similar than different. Both are wonderful bikes - the QB is STILL my favorite of all my bikes (including my Homer, Atlantis, Rohloff Bomba, and Proto-App Mystery Bike). It's the ultimate jump on and go. I liked in the podcast interview, Grant reinforcing the idea of comfort is what makes you choose to ride. Comfort bike has a connotation all its own, and most of the connotations are negative to 99% of the riders out there. City bike, touring bike - all these have become defined genres something akin to the classic steel frame castrated fixie in the corner at the LBS. Unracer works as well as anything to describe The Last Bike. I don't see Grant as polarizing anything. People chose to be polarized by protecting their ignorance, and most people buying bikes are suckers to the 30-something salesman at the LBS. 95% of the people buying modern racing bikes (especially those of us over 50) will end up not riding them because of discomfort. I am always amazed by the people at trailheads complaining about their uncomfortable bikes and saddles, and spending more money on lycra and gel diapers. [RBW] Re: Introduction
I purchased my Rambouillet in 2007, since sold, through Coventry Cycles here in Portland. After pulling the trigger I had to wait only a week for them to build it up. Rivendell would have likely been a month or so wait. The Hilsen had just come out and waits for that were longer. A little over a year later I was in a position to purchase a Hilsen frame. I was fortunate that RBW had it in stock and it shipped pretty quickly. It remained boxed up for a month or so until I was able to get it built up. I purchased a used Quickbeam in 2009 which has also been sold. I'd love to one day get a complete bike through RBW. Seems like it's worth the wait as the build is solid with a lot of special detail to attention. I'd love to get a complete Hunqa or Hillborne but it's just not gonna happen. I have the bikes I need. Welcome to the world of RBW. I imagine you'll pick-up your bike in person. Be sure to document the glorious day with photos and post them here. The FujiFilm X cameras particularly the X100 and X100S make great cameras to use when riding. Thanks very much for the kudos on the photos. Almost all the pictures are made from raw files processed in LightRoom. I can't praise Paso Robles enough as a great place to ride. Lots of 'country bike' kind of riding there and much variety. Re: [RBW] Great Western Bicycle Rally - 2013
The x100 looks like a great camera, but my personal rules about digital cameras and cycling require that I only carry a camera that I wouldn't mind dropping while riding. At upwards of $1,000, the x100 wouldn't meet that test for me. I generally carry cameras that I paid $100 or less for, and those usually come from eBay (where I buy older models to get 95% of the features at 25% of the price). I got a screaming deal on a very nice waterproof Sony camera mostly because it is pink, and nobody wants a pink camera. So the first car just left the driveway on their way to Norfolk. We'll get out of here about 1pm when I get off work. Went for another loaded ride last night.. bike is just so sweet. I had my wife hide the other camera and lenses so I wouldn't be tempted.. in my mind I keep thinking what's another 10 pounds at this point The load is good.. I guess I just don't see how people travel much lighter, and still cook / not just boil and such. It would be easy to cut say 10lbs but it's stuff I would miss and that gets used. Ive been on tours where I set stuff home via ups because I wasn't using it, but this is the stuff that gets used daily. I could save 2lbs with a smaller thermo rest... nope the comfort is much better as is. Save another 2 to 3 lbs with a smaller tent... .n... much to nice on stormy nights as is with two of us... oh.. off load 1/2 the tent on Dawns bike! now that would save me 4lbs right there. Re: [RBW] Re: UnRacer Paraphernalia description.
Well, most people are going to buy a bike so they can ride with the group of folks that they ride with or associate themselves with. If I were (only) a fast club rider and wanted to use my bike for commuting too, then I can understand the idea of getting a light bike. What's not appreciated or generally known is that a heavier bike like the Roadeo can perform just as well as a lighter carbon/Ti bike because it can use supple wide tires that give significant speed and comfort advantage over many skinnier tires. Heck, a 17-lb Ti Seven bicycle is probably a darn good bike--not a great commuter agreed, but I still prefer a Roadeo for its wider tire capability/fenderability etc., but it's also not a great commuter. If I only had one bike, then I could understand going this way. I'd put a seatpost rack or a large saddle-sack on both to commute and use a Mark's wrap or something similar for my club rides. I like the idea of an Unracer just rider category too. If we can get a bunch of riders to associate with that group, then they can feel good about buying great versatile bike that's comfortable to ride and feel good about not always trying to go fast(est). I think the Randonneur/long distance cyclist is probably what I associate with most closely, and this group appreciates comfort and versatility over weight much more than the racer category, so we are attracted to Riv bikes. I am unapolegetically lycra and clipless, but still feel a part of the Riv family. Re: [RBW] Great Western Bicycle Rally - 2013
To each his own, of course, but I figure I've got more than a couple thousand bucks into a bicycle that is always just one small oil slick or attention-defecit driver away from crashing and burning, so I'm not going to forgo the awesomeness of a Fuji X100/S or X10/X20 for fear of dropping. You can get a clean/used X100 for $500-$600, a clean X10 for $200-$275 (?), with file output that is as good as a Riv rides. Heck, some of us are shodding our $400+ wheels with near-$100 tires, and you can shred a tire in no-time flat. YMMV... Paul Brodek Hillsdale, NJ USA Quoting Eric Norris : The x100 looks like a great camera, but my personal rules about digital cameras and cycling require that I only carry a camera that I wouldn't mind dropping while riding. [RBW] Re: Bike Spec Product Managers; was: [BOB] The AngryAsian says.....
I know that gearing is always a very individual thing, with fitness level and terrain and target speed and load and more mixed in. With 11/12t cogs, it's all about how you define standard chainring sizes. I've pretty much entirely abandoned triples for compact doubles, and 34/46 or 34/48 are my new standard rings. An 11/12t cog gives me a high enough gear to spin a bit before I tuck to descend, my dweeble-like build being ideal only for descending. With a smallish 12-14t jump in the front, indexed shifting is always easy and even foolproof. Haven't done loaded touring in many decades, if that option presented itself I'd need lower gearing, either a triple, but they feel kinda yucky now, or a more-compact doulble (24/44?) or a monster low rear cog (42t w/SRAM?). Paul Brodek Hillsdale, NJ USA Quoting Geof Gee : On Fri, May 31, 2013 at 12:44 PM, Andy Goodell wrote: If 11t is too fast than why not just use smaller chainrings? Particularly for indexed front derailer shifting, it pays to keep the standard chainring sizes. If you are like me, then you prefer the width of a road crank which AFAIK means the smallest (big) chainring is 50t. For me, I've always been a spinner, that is simply not usable except in extraordinary circumstances. For a long time, I used a 12-32 10-speed cassette with a compact crank. But I hardly used the 12-tooth cog; I used the 32 more than the 12. Nevertheless, I had more usable cogs in the center of the cassette with easier jumps. However, I'll be the first to admit that the general acceptance of 11-tooth cogs implies that most people seem to be fine with it and I'm the strange one. -G -- Sometimes I forget things. Who I am. An 11/12t cog gives me a high enough gear to spin a bit before I tuck to descend, my dweeble-like build being ideal only for descending. With a smallish 12-14t jump in the front, indexed shifting is always easy and even foolproof. Agree. I use a 48/34 double up front with a 12-27 in the rear and have no problem spinning with the 48x12 gear. Since I outweigh most of my buddies by at least 25lbs, all I have to do is get going down a hill and tuck. Haven't done loaded touring in many decades, if that option presented itself I'd need lower gearing, either a triple, but they feel kinda yucky now, or a more-compact doulble (24/44?) or a monster low rear cog (42t w/SRAM?). Who I am. Update now that I have had a chance to ride with the 5-10's on VP pedals. Big thumbs up so far. The combination of the sticky rubber of the shoe and the pins on the pedal give a super solid feel during all types of pedaling e.g. cruising, high cadence, out of the saddle, and climbing. Highly recommend this combination for all aspiring un-racers. On Tuesday, May 28, 2013 3:23:22 PM UTC-5, Jayme Frye wrote: How serendipitous. [RBW] Anybody ordering to enter the Sam/Betty raffle? And usual excellent customer service from Riv folks
Not to dis Campy but decided to swap out my older Campy SR seatposts for Nitto S-83 2-bolts on my Rivs because I did have the rails on one of my B-17's break on my X0-1 (which had a 27.0 mm 96 vintage Campy record diameter and this is the bike I generally commute to work on. Fortunately no injury to me..so that is a good thing). So ordered 2 27.2 mm S-83's and added $10 to 1 of Riv's charities to bump my order to $200but I didn't have any caffeine in my system this am , so I accidentally ordered 26.8 mm instead. My partner phoned me at work and pointed this out, but we couldn't change the order. I phoned Riv long distance and spoke to Rich who very kindly changed my order to the correct 27.2 mm (Doh:)). I'm sure they're crazy busy today getting ready for the pop-up event tomorrow , and doubtless processing a blizzard of $200 orders. So, out of curiosity, did you enter this raffle, and if you did, what did y'all order and which bike would you pick if you won? I'm thinking the Betty...at my mature age, a step through would be a useful addition to the stable Good luck:) -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. Re: [RBW] Anybody ordering to enter the Sam/Betty raffle? And usual excellent customer service from Riv folks
I put in an order over the weekend. I bought some tires and some other stuff, and decided to check out the MUSA knickers. I carefully made sure that I was over the limit even if the knickers were going back-- which they are. I'm sure those knickers are fine, but they will not be joining my wardrobe. I thought the raffle was only for a Betty? I've already planned what I'll do with it when I win ;) The raffle is insanely clever, because I'm sure a lot of us are planning what we'd do with our new bike. We sort of already feel like we own it... and then when we don't win, we might decide that we need to own that bike anyway. A B17 Select, extra bracket for my recently purchased Cygolite (awesome light which charges off your laptop), 8cm DirtDrop stem, four rolls of Newbaum's maroon bar tape (I mistakenly ordered eggplant last time). Nope, *please* don't do that, it renders in individual email subscriptions as a run-on url hyperlink (made even more unwieldy by gmail's GET-request tracking)... Image attachment, or even pasted directly into rtf-email works just fine. Save 2lbs with fewer days of clean clothes and do laundry more often... not worth it. Save 4lbs by not taking the large saddle sack... but what a loss for grocery hauling and picking up things along the way. Save a 2lbs by not taking coffee and french press.. [RBW] Re: Loaded Bombadil
On the one hand, the weight is not terribly important - the bike carries it after all. On the other hand, a little less weight is an excellent thing. Much easier on the back wheel on dirt roads. On my travels, I've had the bike up to 15kg for the bike, 25kg (55lb) for basic kit, 12kg for water and 8kg for food. That's 132lb - which is too much weight, but that's when I had to be mostly self sufficient for a few days. But, in its basic form of 40kg (88lb), it felt positively weightless. At 88lb I could carry my bicycle up flights of stairs, which I did mainly to impress the locals in Mexico, after they'd all had a turn trying to pick it up. Then I met an Argentinian who could carry my fully loaded bike one-handed. I think the limiting factor for basic touring weight should be determined by whether or not one can carry the bicycle up a flight of stairs. This does not have to be accomplished elegantly. The really important thing here though is that you are heading off on a bike trip - brilliant! Enjoy it and you are correct that the tent and thermorest should give you comfort - if you can sleep, you can ride.
