Re: [RBW] Re: SEA v PDX... and the winner is...
To add to what Andy said - I also found our 2nd-day's adventure to be the best ride in years! It always helps to endo into the snow on your Hilsen at speed, pinch flat the rear (of course!) Cypres while slamming down some rocky, rutted, melt-draining dirt trails waiting for arm-pump to set in, fall on the seat twice when your feet pop off the pedals in the rocks, and - oh yeah - do it all with a bunch of awesome-fun, like-minded riv geeks! Wow - I now understand underbiking, but I would say a Hilsen can do anything that doesn't involve major air. Best bike ever! The Hunqa was great on day 1, too! We got things squared away at camp and set out for the Rumble Ride. We headed up The North Fork Cispus River for about about 10 miles…. a fair amount of climbing, lots of breaks, bike talk, and we found a nice view point to hang out for a snack and some hanging out before heading back down. The Portland crew whipped up a spaghetti dinner then we settled around the camp fire until well after dark. In the morning the Seattle crew (aka Brian) was the first one up so he got a fire going and cooked a big batch of eggs. After breakfast and cleaning up around camp, Charlie had to head home, but the rest of us headed out to investigate the snow level. We figured we'd eventually be stopped by the snow and have to turn around. The snow ended up being mostly melted. We got crazy close to making the connection to connect to our 40 mile loop. We implemented the Manny Principle (keep pressing forward despite not really knowing what's up ahead and even though it's likely to cause you to be late getting home). The loop turned out to include a spectacular 5 mile descent down a jeep road. Following the ride we loaded the bikes into the cars and headed our separate ways. As for who won the Rumble… I't wasn't exactly clear. We were so pre-occupied riding, telling stories, geeking out on bikes, and generally having a great time that the Rumble part of it fell off the radar. Perhaps we'll have to do it again and be more on top of it. Re: [RBW] Re: Actual Tire Sizes
True, the Little Big Bens don't have side-knobs, only the even square-block tread... I still think it might be a good tire for me, but, I'm still looking for something w/ side-knobs, too. And I agree, the Sammy Slick does seem narrower than what I want, too. I like the MSO, but it may be pushing it for fit on this bike.Oh... I've recently gotten a canti-Rom frame, and I'm going to build it up as a 'gravel-grinder'. A regular Romulus maxes out around a 37 or a 38, so I'm hoping that I'd have enough room to squeeze an MSO on it, but the MSO may be a step too far. So, I'm searching for tires in the 38 range, and maybe pushing it, to see what might suit. I like the Rock-n-Roads, but they seem to measure a full 43, so I'm pretty confident that they can't make it. What's the max size your frame can fit? And idea how close a canti-Rom would be? Brian, fantastic job on the photos. Great stuff here. Oh to pedal through Gifford PInchot this summer! I can't say enough good things about rambling through Gifford Pinchot. And as stellar as your images are and the ride was, you guys just scratched the surface. If you can return later in the year when the passes and various observation points are open, Windy Ridge, McClellan, Johnston, you're really in for a treat. [RBW] Re: Oiling a Select saddle
My B-17 special is about 15 years old and is still in great shape. When I got it, I spread Sno-seal top and bottom and took a hair dryer to it for a few minutes. I rubbed the melted snow seal in until my hand cramped. I did that three times. After months of riding I was getting a little frustrated that the saddle hadn't softened up. I used proofhide, Obenaufs, and finally a little bit of neatsfoot oil to try to soften it up and it still remained rock hard. The saddle looks like it will last another 15 years. Seriously. Sno-seal is a wax and it soaked in so well and so deeply that it would not let the oils or fats in, to soften the seat. I loosened the tension on the saddle and after a year of flexing it is finally soft enough to let in oil. I would suggest that if you want your saddle to last forever, Sno-seal the hell out of it, heat it and repeat. Just don't expect it to soften up for a long time. [RBW] FS Samuel Hillborne 60cm (nearly) complete
I've decided to try and see if there is any interest in my 60cm Sam. It's one of the blue beauties that I've had for a year. Frame bought straight from Riv. I built it up myself. It's a bit of an ecclectic build with the vintage Suntour Mountech derailleurs, but it all works sweet. Chris King headset. Albas with Dia Comp (Silver internals) friction shifters out on the ends of the bars. The photos show the bars without grips but they are wrapped with shellacked burgundy Neubaums over Cinelli cork (nice) just on the ends between the brake levers and the shifters. The stem is 12cm Velo Orange with stem adapter which makes it easy to switch the bars out. Chain, 8-speed (12-34) cassette, IRD bottom bracket and Sugino XD600 triple crankset (26-36-46t, 175 length) are all new. Wheels are Mavic A317's laced to Shimano LX hubs (36h). Straight and true, less than a year old. Tires are Schwalbe Marathon Racers 38's with less than 500 miles on them. They look new. SKS silver fenders with reflective 3m tape are included. Disclaimer: the rear derailleur is limited to the top four gears in the little front chainring and the bottom four gears in the big front chainring. Middle ring shifts the full range. I've enjoyed this as it teaches good anti-cross-chaining skills and those unreachable gears are overlap anyways. Disclaimer #2: under the tape and twine chainstay protector on the drive side are some obligatory minor chain slap chips. They are small. No dents anywhere. No other chips, dents, scratches. Things shown in the photos that are not included: saddle, saddle bag, bottle, bottle cages, light, bell and pedals. I guess they are negotiable. If you want any of those things included let me know. It's a beautiful bike. The only reason I am looking to sell is that I recently added a new bike to my stable with the knowledge that I would have to let one go. Space restrictions, an understanding wife (within reason) and two kids... Please email off list with any questions or for larger or additional photo files. I would like to find someone local in the New York Metro area to buy it. I live in southern Westchester Co. just north of the city. Interested parties on this list are welcome to come and test ride it. I will certainly consider shipping. We just need to figure out the particulars of that. I don't trust my packing skills. Let me know if you are interested. As far as price goes: I will entertain any realistic offers. Re: [RBW] Re: Actual Tire Sizes
David, Not that one; Alex in St Paul posted his for sale here as a complete, but I talked him into just the frame (and a few other bits). (http://www.cyclofiend.com/cc/2007/cc406-andrewkarre1107.html) The official quoted size is 38; but that's usually on the conservative side, so, I'm hopeful. Tom, I've seen that Conti has several CX tires, usually 32 or 35; hadn't realized that that one has a 42 option; usually Conti runs narrow, so that one might fit. (I've got a set of the 42 Tour Rides in 650b, but have set them aside now). Thanks for the input, Pudge! Re: [RBW] Re: Actual Tire Sizes
I've seen reports of the MSO measuring ~40mm on wider rims like 24mm Dyad. On the Canti-roms with the right kind of brake pads ( the short ones that swing out of the way) you could probably fit the MSO's on the fork. I was thinking about adding canti's on my Ram for reason, but sold it to fund a custom. ~mike -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] Betty Foy/Yves Gomez stem question
I am a female, 5'6, 84 PBH with an Yves, fist full of seat post showing, 9cm nitto technomic stem. The albatross bars feel a little too close - angled them down and lowered them, so the stem is level with the saddle, which helped. I thought a longer stem (11 or 12) would be better - but the LBS cautioned it would put more weight on my hands, and longer stems are usually for men, who often have shorter legs and longer torsos. I have long legs for my height, and possibly long arms for my height. Also, my neck gets tense, would a longer stem make that worse? Re: [RBW] Betty Foy/Yves Gomez stem question
KLA (what is you actual name?): good questions. It's not always true that a greater reach means more weight on your arms and hands. If your saddle is correctly positioned (http://www.peterwhitecycles.com/fitting.htm), your back muscles will to one extent or another act as a cantilever to hold your torso up even when extended relatively low and forward. Another point: if you extend the reach but raise the bar, you may find less weight on your shoulders/arms/hands than with a lower but nearer bar. There are two ways to find the ideal position: one, buy and install that new stem, evaluate, and repeat as needed -- iow, personal experience. The other way is to get a competent professional fitting for the sort of riding you do and your body type. [RBW] Re: Betty Foy/Yves Gomez stem question
*Longer stems are usually for men*. Ahahahahaah !As if *that* has anything to do with your choice lol. I would try another shop, one that can let you borrow or try out some different length stems before buying them. Or like me , I bought an inexpensive VO threadless stem adapter , and some inexpensive threadless stems on ebay. I use them for fitting purposes, or in the case of one bike I ended up using the VO adapter as I found a great looking threadless stem :) The beauty of these are you can change any time. If you ever changed bars, change the threadless stem instead of the whole *unwrap the bars and find a new stem thing*. I would not cut the bars ! No way !!! Stems are much easier to change and why they exist in different sizes. Once you cut a bar ... there is no adding it back ! Hey Manny. I just wanted to ask where in the Headlands you camped? I'm trying to do a quick overnight this Friday, but I know Hawk, Haypress, and Bicentennial in the Headlands are all booked. [RBW] Saddlesack (med) grocery loading strategy and related questions
Patrick, That is quite the impressive load! Well done. I use the large Saddlesack and load outside the store. I would be too stressed trying to load while checking out, all with impatient folks behind me. I take my items outside to my bike, analyze what I have, and load accordingly. Similar to a game of tetrus. With your load I would have placed the milk in first toward the back of the bag to get its weight more forward and to give form to the bag. Last in would be fragile things like fruit, which would go on top or closest to closure. Most likely that is what you did. You could also strap lightweight bulky items to the top of the bag, like the maxipads. ;) Assuming the medium bag has the ability to secure straps to the outside this would give more room inside the bag. I use a rack with the large Saddlesack and do not find room compromised; in fact on my Surly the large would be unusable without the rack. The large is designed, I believe, to be secured on the bottom to a rack and on top to the saddle. There is no means to connect it to the seat post. It sounds like you have a good system with the panniers. Good luck, Erl -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] Betty Foy/Yves Gomez stem question
I can only imagine that they're saying a longer stem will put more weight on your hands because it will stretch out your reach and get you leaning on the bars (weight of upper body on hands). Since you have long arms, found the a-bar comes too far back, and like to be a little more stretched out anyway, it would make sense to try a longer stem. Do you figure 3 cm or so would put the handlebar more to your liking? Do you like the bar otherwise? If yes to both, I'd try the longer stem. [RBW] Re: Betty Foy/Yves Gomez stem question
I should have noted I use a 0 degree 13cm. stem on my 60cm Bombadil even with it's long-ish top tube. If the TT was more than a cm. shorter , I'd use a 14cm. My bars are a couple of inches above the middle of the saddle. But with the Albas I can literally ride with my elbows on top of the bars in hight winds, so having lower bars is not necessarily better . An Aerodynamic position is not all about bar height, because one with a flatish back and arms bent at a right angle is more aero than one with a flatish or rising back and arms pointed downward at an angle to lower bars. The arms are levers ... and are meant to bend !!! -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. Depends to some extent on what you mean by upright. I've been riding a Surly 1x1 for over 6 years now with a Flyer saddle and about as short a reach threadless stem as they make with no issues. Re: [RBW] Saddlesack (med) grocery loading strategy and related questions
I don't have a strategy. I use the large Saddlesack, have them put the groceries in bags (now we have to supply our own) and just shove everything in. The load you describe (gallon milk, 2 bottles wine, maxipads, blueberries) would fit easily with no tetris problem. If I have a lot more than that, sometimes I end up unpacking some of the bags and carefully filling up the corners. On Tue, Jun 4, 2013 at 1:54 PM, WETH erlhous...@gmail.com wrote: Patrick, That is quite the impressive load! [RBW] Family Ramble
Woke up today knowing there would be a lot of LOUD construction due to all the heavy equipment that had appeared in town over the weekend. My plan was to escape to Rampart Reservoir which was partly burned by the Waldo Canyon fire last year. But I really didn't want to spend another day away from my wife and kids, so asked if they would join me (driving part way there to make it possible). Indeed they did, so off we went. Everything looked lush and green (for Colorado) and untouched for the first 2/3rds of the ride. Then trails that had been old roads overgrown to single track were freshly plowed from fire trucks getting access. Entire new junctions existed and we sent out our oldest lassies as scouts to try and figure out which ones to take. Getting lost actually took us into the burn area. Wow. The transformation from pine and aspen forest to chard lodge poles without a lodge is stunning to see. After a few tries at a few places, we got it right. Our site was untouched. The thunderstorms began rolling in, everyone but me ate lunch (since I fast for 24 hours between meals), we got a wonderful drenching and light and sound show, and home we bound. Life is beautiful! What a wondrous way to spend 8 hours avoiding construction noise! http://www.flickr.com/photos/32311885@N07/sets/72157633937237638/ With abandon, Patrick www.MindYourHeadCoop.org www.OurHolyConception.org -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. Re: [RBW] Family Ramble
Family and bicycling: for 6 months or so after my divorce in 2003, I'd often have my then-2-year-old-daughter Catie for the weekend, and Saturdays evolved to a pattern of breakfast, then riding out on the Raleigh Technium fixie pulling Catie in the trailer. We'd cruise through the nearby shopping center and stop at the dollar store where I'd buy replacement kitchen gear and she inspected the helium balloons (Daddy! Daddy! Balloon? Balloon?) With one or two trailing from the trailer cockpit, we'd then ride 1/2 mile to the trailhead and do some fitness mileage -- let me tell you, honking a high-60's gear with a doublewide child trailer into a 20 mph wind is quite exercising. This, when were weren't cruising the apartment complex paths in her pneumatic tired, freewheeling, parent-steering-override Radio Flyer trike. One way to assess if you'd like a longer stem is to move your brake levers and grips (or remove the grips for a while) forward to pretend the bar is further away and see if you prefer that. [RBW] RBW Blug Raleighs in my family...
My bro-in-law has these same two (looks alike anyway) red and green Raleighs and I was over at his place a while back and took pics. RBW should have Sugino make some RBW logo cranks like Raleigh had their logo on their bikes back then. Neat bikes can be seen here. RBW should have Sugino make some RBW logo cranks like Raleigh had their logo on their bikes back then One of the upshots of building 10s of thousands of bikes a year, the downside of course is that they were made with lets say, less than the best attention to details. [RBW] Re: Anyone riding upright with Brooks Flyer saddle?
My back seems to like bars no higher than saddle height. But sometimes I want to sit higher, so I was thinking that maybe my back would be ok with *totally* upright. Maybe it is the between that the back doesn't like. On the short test rides I have had with my wife's upright bike, my back seemed to be ok. So I thought I would try it on the Sam, and maybe keep the Bleriot as the drop bar bike, or vice versa. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group.
