Bill, great album from your 1000 mile tour. I love the distinctive look of
the scanned slides... I learned on a FTN setup passed down from my father
and still shoot some film though mostly black and white. I love my FM2
setup... much smaller than a DSLR. I recently picked up a Nikon 1V1 and a
couple lenses... starts getting back towards that small and light kit.
Definitely some comprimises in the sensor of course but I've found it
makes a good bike camera!

The Grin Fundo group rode up before and we caught up along the way. Got to
talk to a handful of folks on the list and even (gasp) take a few pictures.

After the Junction the groups parted ways and we made our way up to the
abandon rancho. Dark was settling in and we ended up pitching tents in 30
 mph winds!

Dinner was shared as we made spam musubi and The Dav. A fire roasted
banana with chocolate chops, small marshmallows and *wait for it* whisky in
 it's pudding like goodness.

We slept very weary knowing that at any moment a shadowy ghost of the old
ranchers could come by and wake us at any moment!

The next day we were lucky enough to find ourselves over a blanket of fog

Re: [RBW] Re: back problems

2013-08-28 Thread Deacon Patrick
Hey Scott,

If you're looking for a test area that will help you know if this nutty
idea works for you or not, I'd suggest sleeping on the floor (if that can
be done in a way conducive with whatever your family life is). When I
switched, my wife switched too, so that made it a non-issue. Sleeping on
the floor gives you 1/3rd of the day natural and unsupported. It may make
your sleep worse for a week or so before your body adjusts to it, then it
will improve from there. If you need a pillow to start, use one -- plenty
of time to allow your body to catch up and loosen up before you lose the
pillow. But it is very freeing to be able to lie down anywhere and have
portable pillows in your arms. A bit quirky, but you may find this link
helpful: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC1119282/.

If sleeping is not conducive to family life, or you want to do what you can
in addition to sleeping on the floor, then simply sit on the floor (without
leaning on a wall) as much as possible rather than a chair. It will be
harder to get 8 hours a day that way, but that will also work on your core
in a way that sleeping doesn't. Again, it will be challenging and take 3
months to get really comfortable with it, but you will be amazed at the
improvements along the way well before then.

If you experience matches mine, you will start to feel limber and lithe and
rejuvenated in a way you didn't realize you were missing. It really is
amazing.

With abandon,
Patrick

Re: [RBW] Re: Gransfors Bruks Hatchets

2013-08-28 Thread Liesl
I'm kind of excited to try a wood mess kit like sailors in the days of
old. I'd like to weigh my titanium kit (just cup, bowl, plate) and my wood
kit (same) to see the difference. I expect it wouldn't be a deal-breaker.
Advantages of wood: much more thermal than single wall Ti, doesn't make
clattering noise; feels wonderful in the hand; holds many stories.
Disadvantages: can't use it over a flame; heavier than Ti. So one still
needs some sort of pot/pitcher like the Snow Peak 700 ml mug. The beausage
that a wood kit gets over time can't be beat. I have have a wooden
Norwegian bowl and spoon that came over with my ancestors in the 1850's and
they are still serviceable and spectacular. Of course, they don't go
camping.

As for stories, Cooper Ternes says it really nicely and, I think, in true
Riv spirit: Wooden bowls are full of stories. They can be beautiful. They
can be functional. A wooden bowl contains the story of the tree and the
forest where it grew. It contains the story of the maker, his tools and the
tradition it is a part of. A bowl also contains the story and the memories
of the food you eat. A wooden bowl is personable and warm, with frequent
and consistent use it becomes part of your story.

What if this was turned into bikes? Riv bikes are full of stories. They
can be beautiful. They can be functional. A Riv bike contains the story of
the steel and the place where it was made. It contains the story of the
maker, his tools and the tradition it is a part of. A Riv bike also
contains the story and the memories of the rides you take. A Riv bike is
personable and strong, with frequent and consistent use it becomes part of
your story.

I started 6-7 years ago in my home office. Rigged up a system which I still
use. Imagine all your paperwork, stapler, ruler, etc, on the floor, keyboard a

From there I added floor sleeping (no photo). Next was floor dining (photo).
For dining, my wife uses the chairs with the back rest. I just sit on a
pillow. For ultimate relaxation, I use a wooden back rest and pillow to lay
down on floor to read and such (photo). I use chairs as well but I prefer the
floor most of the time.

Actually, any myself included ferry their bikes across to visit and explore

No statement being made just an observation. Saw lots of bikes and people

It doesn't really need to be road racer fast or anything but something designed
to be a little faster would be nice. My restrictions are that I need a 650B
tire and I would prefer to get ones that are all black. I am flexible with the
second one. Are Pari Motos my main choice? Are they strong enough for

Like always great rides start with something dumb happening.
Before jumping on Bart, Dav, Brencho and I stopped by the local taco truck
to get a quick taco before the ride. I ended up losing Brencho's phone at
the taco truck.. Brencho was super cool about it and for the rest of the
ride the on going joke was , Hey Brencho this would look nice why won't
you take a picture of it on your phonenevermind.

 All in good fun.

We roll over to Rivendell with Duy, Wilson, Mike and his friend Matt
waiting for us and surprisingly the rest of the Grin Fundo camping folks.

We purposely didn't try to overlap both events but I guess that's what
happens when you don't pay attention to dates and stuff.

The next day we were lucky enough to find ourselves over a blanket of fog
that cleared once we rode down it and back home.

Great trip. Looking forward to doing again next summer!

Pictures proved that we didn't die from ghostly ranchers:

If you want to go a little wider, maybe check out the Vee Rubber Speedster:

Re: [RBW] Faster Fat Tires

2013-08-28 Thread Toshi Takeuchi
I used the Pari-Moto, but not all black. My impression was the all black
have even less tread than the black with brown sidewalls, but I may be
wrong.

All of these wide and lower pressure tires should handle fire roads fine,
but Pari-Moto tires and the Grand Bois ones in general don't have very
strong sidewalls, so I would be careful about sidewall cuts from rocks on
trails.

I personally would go with Soma B-Line or Soma Xpress tires because they
seem to be a bit more sturdy and would handle the occasional off-road use
much better in my opinion. However, I don't know if they come in all
black. The actual width of the Soma Xpress is less than the Pari-Moto.

If I were all road, then I would go with the Pari-Moto, Lierre or Hetre if
you can handle the width (probably no problem if you don't have fenders).
The Pari-Moto is more of an event tire in that it would be the first to
wear out tread-wise...

Good luck,
Toshi

But here's an English article on Mr. Killi:

Very pretty. I like it better than the regular Foy blue.

Looks like a smoked Foy. Like the same color, just with the smoke look

The Sam Blue has that smoked blue look to it, too.

Re: [RBW] Re: Faster Fat Tires

2013-08-28 Thread Tim Gavin
I recently converted my Rivendell Road to 650B x 38mm Grand Bois Lierre
(from 700C x 28mm Ruffy Tuffy). The Lierres roll very well and are quite
comfy. I inflate them to about 60 psi (slightly lower in front, higher in
back). I rode 200 miles on them at RAGBRAI and liked them immensely.
Grand Bois tires were designed to have very little rolling resistance
after Jan Heine's tests, and I confirm that they picked up speed easily and
held it.

I'd have shod my Riv with Hetres if they fit, but I don't think that my
Road has the horizontal clearance for them: about 2mm between the Lierres
and the fork legs.

2013-08-28 Thread Michael

I was into all black tires from 2009-2012. That's all I ever used on road
 bikes.

But a season on my tan-wall Rumpkins and Swiftys, and now I like the
tan-wall looks just as much.

My new Sam has black Marathons on it now.
I am too chicken to try commuting on my Hetres yet.
Lotsa trashy, glassy shoulders on my commute.
One of these days I will have to try it.
I hear they do well despite not having puncture protection.
I am hopefully going to use them on the Sam on a Century ride in October.
If they perform that much better, I may just keep them on permanently.

[RBW] Re: Faster Fat Tires

2013-08-28 Thread Tony DeFilippo
I've been riding Hetre's for my commute for about four months... knock on
wood, no flats no issues whatsoever. Mostly just makes me wonder why I'd
bother riding anything else. (hoping to find similar comfort/speed in the
700C range for my Atlantis). The tread wear has been pretty minimal and
I'm a big guy so I know I'm putting some pressure on that rear wheel. Im
fascinated to see how they hold up. Of course now they are splitting time
with the Atlantis but as the miles pile up I'll definitely provide some
feedback on using hetre's for everyday riding.

Re: [RBW] Giro aspect helmet

2013-08-28 Thread Aaron Young
That Giro looks pretty nice. I recently bought a new helmet and went with
a Giro because my old Giro was so comfortable. I chose the Giro Reverb
from REI: http://www.rei.com/product/844477/giro-reverb-bike-helmet.
Overall, Its a nice, retro, smooth cue ball shape, but it could use some
more vents, and the fit is not as good as the older Giro because there is
no adjustment in the back to dial in the fit. Not too expensive though, so
its at least another option in the round helmet category.
