Re: [RBW] Re: Car free Crater Lake
Bill, great album from your 1000 mile tour. I love the distinctive look of the scanned slides... I learned on a FTN setup passed down from my father and still shoot some film though mostly black and white. I love my FM2 setup... much smaller than a DSLR. I recently picked up a Nikon 1V1 and a couple lenses... starts getting back towards that small and light kit. Definitely some comprimises in the sensor of course but I've found it makes a good bike camera! -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. Re: [RBW] Re: back problems
Hey Scott, If you're looking for a test area that will help you know if this nutty idea works for you or not, I'd suggest sleeping on the floor (if that can be done in a way conducive with whatever your family life is). When I switched, my wife switched too, so that made it a non-issue. Sleeping on the floor gives you 1/3rd of the day natural and unsupported. It may make your sleep worse for a week or so before your body adjusts to it, then it will improve from there. If you need a pillow to start, use one -- plenty of time to allow your body to catch up and loosen up before you lose the pillow. But it is very freeing to be able to lie down anywhere and have portable pillows in your arms. A bit quirky, but you may find this link helpful: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC1119282/. If sleeping is not conducive to family life, or you want to do what you can in addition to sleeping on the floor, then simply sit on the floor (without leaning on a wall) as much as possible rather than a chair. It will be harder to get 8 hours a day that way, but that will also work on your core in a way that sleeping doesn't. Again, it will be challenging and take 3 months to get really comfortable with it, but you will be amazed at the improvements along the way well before then. If you experience matches mine, you will start to feel limber and lithe and rejuvenated in a way you didn't realize you were missing. It really is amazing. Re: [RBW] Re: Gransfors Bruks Hatchets
I'm kind of excited to try a wood mess kit like sailors in the days of old. I'd like to weigh my titanium kit (just cup, bowl, plate) and my wood kit (same) to see the difference. I expect it wouldn't be a deal-breaker. Advantages of wood: much more thermal than single wall Ti, doesn't make clattering noise; feels wonderful in the hand; holds many stories. Disadvantages: can't use it over a flame; heavier than Ti. So one still needs some sort of pot/pitcher like the Snow Peak 700 ml mug. The beausage that a wood kit gets over time can't be beat. I have have a wooden Norwegian bowl and spoon that came over with my ancestors in the 1850's and they are still serviceable and spectacular. Of course, they don't go camping. As for stories, Cooper Ternes says it really nicely and, I think, in true Riv spirit: Wooden bowls are full of stories. They can be beautiful. They can be functional. A wooden bowl contains the story of the tree and the forest where it grew. It contains the story of the maker, his tools and the tradition it is a part of. A bowl also contains the story and the memories of the food you eat. A wooden bowl is personable and warm, with frequent and consistent use it becomes part of your story. What if this was turned into bikes? Riv bikes are full of stories. They can be beautiful. They can be functional. A Riv bike contains the story of the steel and the place where it was made. It contains the story of the maker, his tools and the tradition it is a part of. A Riv bike also contains the story and the memories of the rides you take. [RBW] Re: Faster Fat Tires
Compass Bikes (Jan Heine) sells the Grand Bois line of tires, I'm using the 'extra legre' Hetre tires which are 650Bx42 and they are fantastic. at $88 per they better be. The non 'extra legre' versions are a mere $60ish and are also reported to be good. They don't satisfy your all black request of course. I think they come in 32 as well, but is that really fat?!? :) I'm about to try the 700Cx45 Resist Nomad's on my Atlantis (a couple weeks away.. wheel build) and hope to compare them with the Hetres. [RBW] Faster Fat Tires
So Rivendell gave me Conti Tour tires on my new Sam. While they are OK they definitely are sluggish compared to other tires I have used. I would like to stay with a fatter tire on this bike but would like something a little swifter. It doesn't really need to be road racer fast or anything but something designed to be a little faster would be nice. My restrictions are that I need a 650B tire and I would prefer to get ones that are all black. I am flexible with the second one. Are Pari Motos my main choice? Are they strong enough for occasional rail to trail use? If possible I would like to stay that wide or wider. Re: [RBW] Faster Fat Tires
I used the Pari-Moto, but not all black. My impression was the all black have even less tread than the black with brown sidewalls, but I may be wrong. All of these wide and lower pressure tires should handle fire roads fine, but Pari-Moto tires and the Grand Bois ones in general don't have very strong sidewalls, so I would be careful about sidewall cuts from rocks on trails. I personally would go with Soma B-Line or Soma Xpress tires because they seem to be a bit more sturdy and would handle the occasional off-road use much better in my opinion. However, I don't know if they come in all black. The actual width of the Soma Xpress is less than the Pari-Moto. If I were all road, then I would go with the Pari-Moto, Lierre or Hetre if you can handle the width (probably no problem if you don't have fenders). The Pari-Moto is more of an event tire in that it would be the first to wear out tread-wise... Reid, I do not speak or read English, but I have the great fortune of having a colleague on my team who does! At any rate, I don't think I've found an English Killi website. The good thing is that Norwegian is sometimes so close to English as to inspire giggles. 'Turkopps,' which is what I have, means a touring cup. 'Snapskopps' are cups for Schnapps, and 'Suppe Kopp' is a soup cup. 'Turkopp med karabinkrok' is a touring cup with—a carabiner! I haven't found a US stockist. My secret desire is that Riv would carry them. The middle size would be poifect. I mean, if they carry Swedish axes, they gotta have equal time for the Norskies (but then are the Danes and the Finns gonna wanna get in on this action? and I suppose Devold counts as Norsk...) But here's an English article on Mr. Killi: http://philholtan.wordpress.com/2013/07/18/trond-killi-norwegian-production-woodturner/ Yes, the wood burning was done by yours truly. Re: [RBW] Re: Faster Fat Tires
I recently converted my Rivendell Road to 650B x 38mm Grand Bois Lierre (from 700C x 28mm Ruffy Tuffy). The Lierres roll very well and are quite comfy. I inflate them to about 60 psi (slightly lower in front, higher in back). I rode 200 miles on them at RAGBRAI and liked them immensely. Grand Bois tires were designed to have very little rolling resistance after Jan Heine's tests, and I confirm that they picked up speed easily and held it. I'd have shod my Riv with Hetres if they fit, but I don't think that my Road has the horizontal clearance for them: about 2mm between the Lierres and the fork legs. [RBW] Re: Faster Fat Tires
I was into all black tires from 2009-2012. That's all I ever used on road bikes. But a season on my tan-wall Rumpkins and Swiftys, and now I like the tan-wall looks just as much. My new Sam has black Marathons on it now. I am too chicken to try commuting on my Hetres yet. Lotsa trashy, glassy shoulders on my commute. One of these days I will have to try it. I hear they do well despite not having puncture protection. I am hopefully going to use them on the Sam on a Century ride in October. If they perform that much better, I may just keep them on permanently. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] Re: Faster Fat Tires
I've been riding Hetre's for my commute for about four months... knock on wood, no flats no issues whatsoever. Mostly just makes me wonder why I'd bother riding anything else. (hoping to find similar comfort/speed in the 700C range for my Atlantis). The tread wear has been pretty minimal and I'm a big guy so I know I'm putting some pressure on that rear wheel. Im fascinated to see how they hold up. Of course now they are splitting time with the Atlantis but as the miles pile up I'll definitely provide some feedback on using hetre's for everyday riding. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] Atlantis sizing?
Hey Rivendell folk, does anyone know when Riv made a 55 cm Atlantis? And if so do you know where I can obtain a sizing chart. Re: [RBW] Giro aspect helmet
That Giro looks pretty nice. I recently bought a new helmet and went with a Giro because my old Giro was so comfortable. I chose the Giro Reverb from REI: http://www.rei.com/product/844477/giro-reverb-bike-helmet. Overall, Its a nice, retro, smooth cue ball shape, but it could use some more vents, and the fit is not as good as the older Giro because there is no adjustment in the back to dial in the fit. Not too expensive though, so its at least another option in the round helmet category. -Aaron The Dalles, OR On Wed, Aug 28, 2013 at 8:37 PM, Christopher Chen cc...@nougat.org wrote: I have a very nice uvex helmet, which at $85 was one of the cheapest helmets in the store. [RBW] Nitto Campee rear rack FS
Hello, Just wondering if anyone might be interested in my Nitto Campee rear rack? Everything is in great shape, all the mounting struts, just seem to be missing the rack nut and bolts (http://www.rivbike.com/product-p/rh1-20184.htm). Ideally I'd like to ask $125.00 +shipping. [RBW] Re: Faster Fat Tires
I'm using the Conti Speed tires that Rivendell sells. Its hard to beat the Grande Bois tires that Compass sells, but I was pleasantly surprised by the Conti Speed tires. I think they measure out to be around 38mm, and fit my Homer nicely. I'm riding them on dirt roads and am happy with them. Wider is better, at least for me.
