It is not absolutely critical that you use a washer. It is better if you
use a washer. Flat washer. Preferably on that will not rust, so stainless
or brass.

Can I throw any ol' washer on the new bolt, or is it a curved washer?
Original looks kinda curved (domed), but may be optical illusion.

 Please advise.

I had Sheldon's fender nuts to install Longboards on my 650B wheels (and

mounting I realized it wasn't going to work -- for the front, it moved the

caliper, etc), but I don't see how they'll improve fender line. They move
the front fender rearward an inch or two; how does that help? I appreciate
any advice; this was my second ever fender install.

Nice thing about using a pickup bed as my main bike transport: no need to
remove any wheels, fenders, etc. Just lay it on the side and close the

That said, I still do it (occasional fenderizing and defenderizing): The
trails out my backdoor (Wildcat Canyon) can get muddy, and so for winter
mudding the fenders have to be able to come off. That applies to two
bikes. My roadiest bike sometimes has the fenders off when I'm feeling a
weight-weenie attack, or when I want to run THE FATTEST possible tire.
Finally, I had the chance to throw my Hilsen into my sister's trunk for
free transport to Southern California, so the fenders had to come off. Now
I'll get to ride all Christmas break. Furthermore, I might leave the
Hilsen down there all the way through Strada Rossa!

[RBW] Re: Planning 72 hours in Marin

2013-11-08 Thread Cyclofiend Jim
Sounds exciting!

In Marin county, all of the transit buses have front-mounted bike racks.
Though they can be tricky with a tour-loaded bike. Not that you'll need it,
but if you get in a bind...

From West Point Inn, you're more than halfway up Mt. Tam - You can ramble
up on Railroad Grade, then roll another 1/2 mile to the East Peak, where
you can hoof to the tallest bit or hike a loop around at parking lot level.
Descend (after a couple short climbs) on East Ridgecrest and then West
Ridgecrest to either BoFax or the Bolinas Ridge trail.

You'll be close to Pt. Reyes Station - there's an excellent shop there
called Black Mountain Cycles if you want to drop in and hang out, and
grocery store and Bovine Bakery in town. Those campsites are all
reasonable distances from one another, so you should have time to enjoy and
explore!

rim. Cantilever pads dive as they go inward. The sidewalls of the A23, tilt
slightly in the wrong direction for cantilevers. The brakepads strike kind of
a glancing blow. It's not a major problem, but it does need to be part of your
regular inspection of your bike to make sure you readjust the pads as they
wear. In many cases I've seen brakepads dive so the edge of the brakepad
sneaks under the rim, and as the pad wears futher, that edge becomes a ledge,
and can actually catch under the rim. In very severe cases of neglect you
could dive under the rim into the spokes. Some classic touring bikes used to
come with rims that tilted in an upside down V shape, optimal for diving
cantilever pads.

Caliper and centerpull brakes, with the pivot point above the rim, cause the
brake pads to rise as they move inwards (on the arc of a circle). The A23 is
tilted more or less perpendicular to that rising path. As the pad wears, it'll
still strike the brake track in approximately the same spot.

Boulder celebrates their offering of the A23 and A23 O/C as their perfect rim.
I think it's really close, but if I could make any adjustments, tweaks to the
brake track would be my suggestions.

Hi Bill -

by your comment about the slight V shape of the rim being ideal for centerpulls
and caliper brakes and sub-optimal for cantilever brakes.

I assume this has something to do with the pivot point of the brake being used
with the rim. Is that accurate?

the possible negatives of the a23 extrusion in my mind are:

1. the brake track is not very tall, not as tall as the p23 or
2. the brake track sidewalls are not parallel. they have a slight v shape,
ideal for centerpulls and caliper brakes, sub optimal for cantilevers,
3. a modernish look, not as classic as a boxier section

Re: [RBW] WTB: Park CN-10 cable housing cutter

2013-11-08 Thread Peter Morgano
I have the same tool, and it does cut the jagwire compressionless better
than the spiral cable. Good advice on angling the cutter, I will try that
next time I cut spiral cable. As for the cutters, buy them on fleabay, put
them in your tool box and you will thank yourself when you no longer have
to futz with wire cutters like I did for years.

Mine cuts pretty cleanly. I've found that brake cable housing requires a

side cuts and the other side has a dangler.

I bit the bullet and bought one new at my LBS. I've used it a bunch

Tip: don't use the housing cutter for other stuff like fender stays. It
doesn't do the job well and it dulls the cutter. Bolt cutters work for
 fender stays.

Re: [RBW] Re: WTB: Park CN-10 cable housing cutter

2013-11-08 Thread Perry
The park tool has cable and cable housing ferrule crimpers on the inside of the
cutting jaws. You can use the housing ferrule crimper to round out the cable
housing after cutting it. It works quite well his way. Just squeeze hard enough
until the housing is rounded. Additional finishing, if needed, can be done by
inserting an awl into the cut end of the cable housing. I used to finish the
cables sheldon style (grinder/awl) but it was too much work and frankly, it's
not needed. I've done a boat load of cables with just the park tool and it's
clean every time. This tool is a must if you're going to cut your own cables
and housing. Worth every penny new.

[RBW] Re: Flash San Diego Riv Ride Saturday the 9th.

2013-11-08 Thread Tom Virgil
Ratz. just learned I have a work related lunch meeting on Sat.

But...

Wild horses are not going to keep me away from this ride. My campus at
work is above Penasquitos and there are several ways I can ride and
intercept from there. The wheel turns as the wheel turns, but here is a
rough approximation of the ride in three parts.

Flash Ride Part 1 http://veloroutes.org/bikemaps/?route=106936
Flash Ride Part 2 http://veloroutes.org/bikemaps/?route=106940
Flash Ride Part 3 http://veloroutes.org/bikemaps/?route=106942

I am out of the meeting at 1:00

It will take you approximately 1 hour 38 minutes to ride part 1 at a
constant 10 mph. Adding approximately 1 hour more for coffee at Starbucks,
contemplation of the larger scheme of things at the waterfall in
Penasquitos, and rest breaks, that would put you through the intersection
of Del Sur Blvd and Carmel Valley Road at about 1:40. That is the start of
part 2. I will intercept you there for part 2. I can get there a little
early and can wait for quite some time.

Hugh, I sent you a contact number via gmail in case we need to synchronize.

Oh, part 3 gives some suggestions for the way back to Pizza Port using some
of the new parts of the Coast to Crest Trail. More dirt.

I bought the Hozan cable cutters, which work just fine. You can get them on
Amazon for forty dollars. For brake housing I mostly use a Dremel with a
cut off wheel. Much cleaner cut.

Agree! Good cable cutters are one of the things you absolutely should buy
new. The Park ones at $35 - $40 are a great value. That's what's on my
bench at home. At the shop I always ran Felco. Those are twice as
expensive but last forever even at the shop.

[RBW] Ortlieb Rollers!!!!

2013-11-08 Thread Patrick Moore
I traded a jaded pair of Ortlieb Packer Pluses with fellow lister Joe
Broach for a pristine pair of Ortlieb Rollers, 'cuz I don't need high end
camping luggage, I need high end grocery luggage. I used them for the first
time this afternoon, to carry 35 lb of groceries, and mail to Mom.

I have a pair of Banjo Bros Market Panniers, which are very large and
certainly not bad for the $50/ea price. But MAN! -- those Rollers are
NICE!!! So easy to attach to the Fly! So easy to remove! So carefully
designed! So elegant in operation!

I hauled them into Sprouts this afternoon and shoved them onto the conveyor
belt along with my fruit and veg and meat and such. The girl bagger said,
Unusual! and I agreed.

35 lb, and they are hardly more than 2/3 full if even that. I bet that I
can get two/2/II/dos/deux/do/mbili full paper sacks in each, if I wanted to
and if my Fly and my Ram (OT content) could carry such weight.

Oh: and riding the Ram for the first time in weeks, I was once again struck
by how easy multiple gears make climbing steep hills with heavy loads.
Hoooda Thunk?

Just installed fenders. So I will ride with fenders.

Re: [RBW] Flash San Diego Riv Ride Saturday the 9th.

2013-11-08 Thread Tom Virgil
Got it Curtis :-) I will be riding fenders on the Sam. Since my somewhat
inconsiderate employer decided to book me for lunch tomorrow with a certain
South Korean manufacturer of cell phones and ace me out of part 1 of the
ride, I left work early today and reconed the west end of Gonzales on my
29er to get an update on trail conditions as they are now. It is always
changing base on rain and horse impact.

Reference is made to the Gonzales Canyon
Map.http://www.sandiego.gov/park-and-recreation/pdf/gonzalestrailmap.pdf

I rode all the way West to the SeaBreeze Stables. It led to a somewhat
unfortunate conversation between myself and the equestrians. I was
diplomatic. The equestrians, not so much. We are not getting through
there unless we get chased by nasty people on horses who don't like
bicycles. The people don't like us, the horses are OK. I can charm a
horse. Too bad since SeaBreeze seems to have co-opted some public ROW that
runs through their stables under the high power tension lines. I
backtracked to the lagoon trail (blue on the map) and climbed to Las
Brisas. Not too hard for me in terms of energy, but ruts, sand, and
rockbed took about everything a 19 lb carbon fiber dual suspension
Specialized Epic can do. I would not feel comfortable on the fendered Sam.
I backtracked and took the power line service road (red on the map) back up
to to Dog Park in the Torrey Highlands Park. It is a well groomed fire
road, but a bit steep. Worst case, a twenty minute walk up the Service
Road with your bicycle. Better, some parts are rideable. I rode it all
the way on the Epic.

This is Hugh's deal and God bless him for proposing it. I''ll defer to him
and the group consensus as we go.

Looking forward to seeing you folks tomorrow.

-Tom

Back before the watch-list developed to where it now is, I used to make
an initial low bid, just so it'd be caught in my list of interested
 items,
then hold off, make sure I was back to the PC for those last five
 minutes,
then do what I can... never used any of the auto programs, either, just
 me
 and luck, good or bad...

Now, the watch-list functions well, so I don't pre-bid anymore, just
lurk, w/ apps, they remind you 15-minutes out, so you can catch it at the
