Re: [RBW] Re: 'Nother Big 'Un on The Bay

2013-11-11 Thread Tom Harrop
Well, it's still listed for sale and the seller has told me he doesn't want
to part it out. I don't expect it to happen but I thought it was worth
checking if anyone wants some parts for a drop-bar build and could team up
as Bill suggested.

The seller hasn't specified most of the parts on the bike, the following
lists are from what I could make out from the photos. I couldn't identify
the items I've listed with a question mark. I am flexible on almost
everything except the wheels and the bars.

Parts I don't want:

Bars, stem and brake levers (?)
Wheelset (Velocity Synergy 36h) incl. cassette. Unknown hubs.
Pasela TourGuard Kevlar tyres
Nitto M12 rack
Sugino Crankset
Pedals (?)
Derailers (?)
Brooks Saddle (anyone know what model that is? It says pre-softened, so
maybe a Team Pro?)

Parts I could take or leave:

Bar-end shifters (?)
Seatpost (?)
Bottom Bracket (?)
Shimano canti brakes (?)
Bottle cages (?)

If anyone's interested in the list of parts above to build up a bike and
not put off by the exceedingly complicated arrangement, send me a direct
email and we can work out a way to split up the purchase price fairly.
Obviously I would do as much of the running around as was possible from my
end, e.g. dealing with the seller and working out what to put on the
customs form. Hopefully the seller has the original invoice so we can work
out the unknown parts...!

[RBW] Skipping only in high gears.

2013-11-11 Thread Deacon Patrick
I’m not positive (due to bludgeoned brain, not great memory), but I believe I
experienced this issue when the Hunqapillar was new and I just chalked it up to
figuring out the friction shifting. Sure enough, over time, the issue faded
away, so matched my slow learning curve. Now I wonder if it went away because
of chain stretch. Anyway, here’s what I’m experiencing now (with a reminder of
recent history)…

New chain and granny chain ring after a very stretched out chain.

The lower half of the granny gears (I don’t ride the upper half) and lower
1/3-1/2 of the middle chain ring are smooth as butter. Easy to hit the gears
and no skipping.

Upper 1/2-2/3rds of the middle chain ring (and likely the top two gears of the
big chain ring, but I rarely ride that and haven’t since chain replacement)
skips when pedaling. It’s not on the edge between gears (I can back pedal
smoothly). My foot just suddenly spins fast, than catches again (not good for
vertigo).

I have tried: 1) fine adjustment with gear shifter, no difference; 2)
tightening the shifter hand nut, no difference.

Ideas: 1) bent derailleur?; 2) rear cassette needs replacement (this doesn’t
make sense to me since it is only the higher gears and it’s the lower gears
that get the most use and torque); 3) ???

Any ideas?

With abandon,
Patrick

[RBW] Re: Amazing Impromptu Saturday in Redlands Courtesy of Mr. Estes

2013-11-11 Thread Esteban
Great way to save a work weekend!

On Sunday, November 10, 2013 10:05:20 PM UTC-8, James Warren wrote:

Saturday, November 9. I had one of those work days for half the day where
I had to be in Claremont, CA. As I was preparing to leave, I realized that
I could maybe take the weekend back in a big way. I figured I'd be most of
the way to Redlands, so I sent David Estes a message to see if he could do
a spur-of-the-moment late afternoon ride. He suspiciously said, I think I
can design us a good flat root.

So as I was getting out of the car near Augie's coffee in Redlands, the
corner of my eye sees a familiar orange Quickbeam. David was eager to
pedal. I only knew half the reason at that moment. So after checking out
the local volunteer-operated bike shop (which is totally cool!) we set out
pedaling our Quickbeams, mine green with Albatross and Alfine 11 and a
gear-shifter, David's clean and sleek and looking great with drop bars in
its beautiful orange. He took me on a route that included lots of flat dirt
paths, and after about 20 minutes came the big reveal: Hangar 24 brewery! I
felt like a kid whose parents surprise them with an unannounced trip to Six
Flags or something. The place was full of happy, relaxing people. This
quickly turned into the weekend I was hoping for, and all it took was a
 Saturday afternoon. Thanks David!

I got the 8-beer taster tray. It's shown on the Flickr. We continued the
ride. More nice easy touring through Redlands, some orange groves, some
train tracks, some SART I think, just a really relaxing Saturday.

We finished up at my favorite pizza place in Redlands. Photos show
evidence of that happening too. We got a couple of bike shots, each of the
Quickbeams taking its turn out front.

As David says, if you like to ride, come to Redlands! Again, I want to
thank him for leading the way on such a fun time. David knows how to
 facilitate some fun bicycle times!

Re: [RBW] Data point for mini-V-brakes and Nitto mini front rack

2013-11-11 Thread BSWP
If I had gone with 6mm shorter arms, the brake cable would likely have hung
up on/over/under the rack bolt. Here's a picture of the cable coming over
my rack, you can see how close it is. These are the 90mm RX6 arms.

http://diesel.smugmug.com/Bici/Rivendell-LongLow/i-d6xJ7sF

But I agree, if clearance from rack or other obstruction is not a concern,
there are shorter (more minier) V-brakes than the RX6. And shorter arms
means better performance with normal pull levers.

If rack clearance is a worry, maybe the extra 6mm will do someone some

Re: [RBW] Skipping only in high gears.

2013-11-11 Thread Bill Lindsay
When your shop swapped out the chain and a chainring, I was surprised that
they didn't sell you a new cassette at the same time. It is entirely
likely your cassette is worn out and needs to go. The smaller cogs share
the load over fewer teeth, so it's not at all unusual to have skipping in
the middle before having it in the bigger cogs (lower gears). If you find
you can't fix it with adjustment, that will most likely be the reason.

 wonder
if it went away because of chain stretch. Anyway, here’s what I’m
experiencing now (with a reminder of recent history)…

New chain and granny chain ring after a very stretched out chain.

The lower half of the granny gears (I don’t ride the upper half) and
lower 1/3-1/2 of the middle chain ring are smooth as butter. Easy to hit
 the gears and no skipping.

Upper 1/2-2/3rds of the middle chain ring (and likely the top two
gears of the big chain ring, but I rarely ride that and haven’t since
 chain
replacement) skips when pedaling. It’s not on the edge between gears (I
 can
back pedal smoothly). My foot just suddenly spins fast, than catches
 again
 (not good for vertigo).

I have tried: 1) fine adjustment with gear shifter, no difference; 2)
tightening the shifter hand nut, no difference.

Ideas: 1) bent derailleur?; 2) rear cassette needs replacement (this
doesn’t make sense to me since it is only the higher gears and it’s the
lower gears that get the most use and torque); 3) ???

 Any ideas?

[RBW] Half Mitts

2013-11-11 Thread Edwin W
Half baked, or well done?
I got a pair http://www.rivbike.com/product-p/ag4.htmin my last order,
and they are working great for this fall transition weather. During the
day, I can go bare handed, but sometimes in the late afternoons or evenings
it gets chilly for bare hands. These half mitts are light, pack easily
anywhere and warm up your hands when it gets too chilly. I am commuting in
them now and we will see how cold it can be for them to stay functional.
When they are not doing the job, I might try a pair of light gloves under
them instead of just switching to heavier gloves. Layering, all about the
layering.

I am so glad they added the thumbs.

I wish they would put a reflective strip on the back for signalling, etc...
as cold weather often goes together with dark.

[RBW] Re: Skipping only in high gears.

2013-11-11 Thread dougP
Patrick:

The shifting ramps on the cassette cogs have nice, crisp edges when new.
My theory is that as they wear from use they gradually become less
effective at picking up the chain, leading to less reliable shifting. My
observation is that the ramps wear well before the cog teeth. At a casual
look, the cassette may appear serviceable, with nice symmetric teeth.
However, comparing a new cassette with one that's well used it's easy to
see the difference in the condition of the ramps. If I were in your
situation, I'd take it in to a shop compare a new cassette to yours.
Take a good look for yourself you'll probably see the difference. Clean
up the cassette first to get the best visual.

[RBW] Re: Skipping only in high gears.

2013-11-11 Thread jinxed
If I understand correctly, it's giving you issues as you get down to the
smaller cogs in the back? If so, this could be your B tension screw on the
derailleur. Sometimes it gets run in to aid with the larger cogs but is a
fine balance that can also reduce the chain wrap on the little ones. The
problem is certainly amplified with a stretched chain.

Sounds like you hit a nail and it's running well now, but if it acts up
again check the B screw.

[RBW] WTB: 700C wheels

2013-11-11 Thread Tim Gavin
I'm rebuilding my girlfriend's father's 80s Raleigh Marathon. We're
looking for a set of 700C wheels for recreational road riding and light
touring. Classic appearance preferred (silver rim, 32 or 36 spokes). 7 or
8 speed compatible freehub (cassette hub) preferred. Double butted spokes
preferred (touring strong).

The best deal I see for new touring-capable rims are these from Harris
(Mavic A319/Tiagra) for $230, plus shipping.

http://harriscyclery.net/product/harris-cyclery-700c-mavic-a319-tiagra-touring-wheel-set-36-spoke-2468.htm

Does anyone have a set they'd like to clear out? Shipped to 52404.

Thanks,
Tim Gavin
Cedar Rapids, IA

[RBW] Rivish Bike Shop - Vegas

2013-11-11 Thread LeahFoy
We moved to Vegas a few months back, and I'm at a loss as to where I should
take my Betty Foy for service. I don't know how to fix my bike - I just ride
it. Lately my gears seem to be grinding, regardless of my coaxing my Silver
Shifters this way and that. Also, I think my brakes could use some work. I've
had the bike 11 months and am coming up on a thousand miles, so maybe it's
time. Recommendations? I don't want to wheel my Riv into some carbon fiber racy
place that will not understand me and my bike...
Thanks!
Leah

 of
the way to Redlands, so I sent David Estes a message to see if he could
 do
a spur-of-the-moment late afternoon ride. He suspiciously said, I think
 I
can design us a good flat root.

So as I was getting out of the car near Augie's coffee in Redlands, the
corner of my eye sees a familiar orange Quickbeam. David was eager to
pedal. I only knew half the reason at that moment. So after checking out

the local volunteer-operated bike shop (which is totally cool!) we set
 out
pedaling our Quickbeams, mine green with Albatross and Alfine 11 and a
gear-shifter, David's clean and sleek and looking great with drop bars in

its beautiful orange. He took me on a route that included lots of flat
 dirt
paths, and after about 20 minutes came the big reveal: Hangar 24 brewery!
 I
felt like a kid whose parents surprise them with an unannounced trip to
 Six

quickly turned into the weekend I was hoping for, and all it took was a
 Saturday afternoon.

We got a couple of bike shots, each of
 the
Quickbeams taking its turn out front.

As David says, if you like to ride, come to Redlands! Again, I want to
thank him for leading the way on such a fun time. David knows how to
 facilitate some fun bicycle times!

[RBW] Re: Rivish Bike Shop - Vegas

2013-11-11 Thread Deacon Patrick
Leah,

Colorado Springs doesn't have anything in the way of a Rivish shop, so I
thought I'd share my non-mechanical approach that may be helpful.

First, standard things like brakes and derailluers are no big deal. Any
bike shop can handle them, though they may scoff at friction shifting and
non-disk brakes. In my experience, every shop I've taken my Hunqapillar to
appreciates the bike but fails to understand why I ride such old fashioned
tech. I've gotten comments like Wow! They don't make them like THAT
anymore. (Reply: They do: at Rivendell -- response: speechless); You
ride THIS on single track? Absolutely. Speechless with a head shake.

So, the more you can know about how your bike works, the better off you
will be. The good news is that old tech is fairly simple tech -- hence
part of its appeal. It's easy to understand the concepts of how it works
even if you're not comfortable fixing it.

Brake and derailure/chain issues are very standard, and my well be covered
as part of a upper end tuneup. I'd simply call around and get pricing and
what the service includes. That alone will tell you a lot about each shop
you call.

As you've likely seen, when I have a specific issue, I tap into the
fantastic folks on this list to get a better understanding of if it
requires a shop or is something simple I can do. It sounds like you may
well be nearing the point I hit, where it's time for a new chain (or at
least a cable tension adjustment) and brake pads. Let us know how it goes!

With abandon,
Patrick

Re: [RBW] Half Mitts

2013-11-11 Thread Aaron Young
I used a thumbless pair through winter, and with a light liner type glove
(with a thumb) they were just fine for my short commute.

My wife knitted me some custom wool gloves based on a design I suggested
that complement the half mitts nicely. They are fingerless and thumbless,
but the thumb has a convertible cap that can fold down to cover the thumb
from the cold when needed. They are a little goofy, but worked really well
for me. The nice thing is everything is covered, but I could easily
uncover the tips of all finger and even thumb if I needed.

I recently bought a thumbed paid of half mitts, but haven't had the need to
use them yet. They seem a bit bulkier than the thumbless versions because
of the thumbs of course, but also they are fuzzier on the inside than the
older version - the material is different. They will probably be better
for colder temps with the extra fuzz in there.

day, I can go bare handed, but sometimes in the late afternoons or evenings
it gets chilly for bare hands.

I wish they would put a reflective strip on the back for signalling,
etc... as cold weather often goes together with dark.

Another possible is REI. They work on a lot of different kinds of bikes so
aren't race oriented. There's a very good one near me where the head
wrench has been there for years and several friends have been pleased with
the service. But I also know of a branch in another county where they're
not as sharp on bikes as people expect. So you'd want to do a little
homework on your local store.

As long as the NV Surly dealer is in Clark County you're OK. Hey, you
don't want to go to Winnemucca, right?

2013-11-11 Thread dougP
Worth keeping mind. When you get to a 34 or 36 large cog, often the B
screw has to get cranked down pretty far, and you use all of the chain. So
if you're on say the middle ring smaller cogs, the chain kind be
kind'o'loose-ish. If that's the case, it makes sense to use the big ring
and a cog 2-3 cogs larger to get the same gear but have more tension on
the chain.

So as I was getting out of the car near Augie's coffee in Redlands,
 the

 out

pedaling our Quickbeams, mine green with Albatross and Alfine 11 and a

I got the 8-beer taster tray. It's shown on the Flickr. We continued
 the

 some

We finished up at my favorite pizza place in Redlands. Photos show
evidence of that happening too. We got a couple of bike shots, each of

  the
Quickbeams taking its turn out front.

As David says, if you like to ride, come to Redlands! Again, I want to

The Raleigh measures 128mm OLD. It fits 126 and 130 with a little effort.
I'm shooting for 130mm hubs, 8speed Hyperglide compatible (or newer).

I'm already watching ebay and internet sales; thanks for the links.

We're specifically looking for classic silver rims/hubs if possible, no
race graphics please.

Thanks for all your consideration, folks.

[RBW] Flash CO Pikes Peak Ride

2013-11-11 Thread Deacon Patrick
Seeing all the fun SoCal and Portlandia are having I thought this may be worth
a go.

When: Saturday, November 16, meet at 9am and plan for the day.
Where: TBD. Depending on snow the day(s) before and rider preference, options
include:

— Phantom Canyon or Cold Camp Road (dirt railroad grades) (meet near Cripple
Creek)
— Manitou Lake to Deckers (option to Buffalo Creek) and back (paved, fairly
secluded mountain road)
— If not too snowy, ride some Pikes Peak single track starting off the end of
Edlow Road west of Woodland Park.

Location will be chosen based on riders interest and/or weather (the first two
should be ok, the latter can be problematic depending on snow amount at higher
elevations.).

Let me know if you are interested. Final ride info will be posted Thursday or
Friday. My participation is dependent on my brain capacity Saturday, but I am
foolishly hopeful! If you have scented laundry detergent or soap/shampoo etc.,
I’ll just ride on your windward side. Grin.

With abandon,

Don't be afraid to give a carbon shop a try.

The shoppes in my area have both been respectful and sensitive to my needs
with my Bleriot.
They even ordered me up a new synergy 650b rim and built the wheel for me
when I needed it.
They liked the bike and said how nice they thought it was.

One carbon shop even had a set of used Shimano bar ends lying around! They
sold me the pod for 5 bucks, I think when the lip on the hole on mine got

 options include:

 — Phantom Canyon or Cold Camp Road (dirt railroad grades) (meet near
 Cripple Creek)
 — Manitou Lake to Deckers (option to Buffalo Creek) and back (paved,
 fairly secluded mountain road)
 — If not too snowy, ride some Pikes Peak single track starting off the

Location will be chosen based on riders interest and/or weather (the

[RBW] Planet of the Apes Overnight.

2013-11-11 Thread Manuel Acosta
Had the Monday off. Got to drag Mark, Brencho and Mike on a quick overnight
down to HMB State beach.
Had to change the overnight location a handful of times. Neither of them
got to do Planet of the Apes before so HMB seemed like the spot to go.

Amazing weather for both days. Very glad I was able to ride with folks that
were willing to put up with a lot of no planning and a frequent change of
locations.

[RBW] Need dirt road riding tips...

2013-11-11 Thread Michael
You Riv-folks seem to be into off road riding a lot so I figured I'd ask.

There is a section of a commute-route I am pondering that takes me along
what looks like an abandoned dirt road made and used by construction crews
for their big vehicles.
It cuts through a wooded area, runs along a river, and looks to be wide and
clear. I am gonna hopefully try it out soon and see how it goes. Looks like
fun and hopefully will be nice riding in such a secluded and private area.

I am Sam bar-ending with drops and just don't want to get bounced and
tossed off the bike during all the bumpiness.
I use Marathons at 55psi.
I guess go slow and keep it in a gear that you can just stay in the whole
time?
What should I look out for/avoid on these types of dirt runs?

Thanks for any advice.

[RBW] Any Rivsters here commute more than 10 miles one-way? Cold weather tips?

2013-11-11 Thread Michael
Just curious.

My commute may get longer soon.
I had been doing partial commutes of 5.6 miles from a park-n-ride, but
would like to work up to the full 16 mile one-way commute one day.
A change in my family's work schedule (3 of us with two cars) may
necessitate this sometimes.

Any Riv-peeps' cold weather tips? Gets down into the 20's here in the
winter.

[RBW] Safe to ride with a slammed Nitto seatpost?

2013-11-11 Thread Michael
Is it ok to clamp a Crystal Fella' at that point of the seatpost, where the
setback curve starts? Or is it not made to be clamped there?

I told my wife she should ride my Alba Bleriot. She agreed. But I would
need to slam the seatpost to get her even close to Riv-recommended SH of
64.5cm.

I view this as the first step in convincing her to get a Riv Mixte. The
direct asking approach didn't work. She said her 350$ Raleigh is fine, but
I know better. Ha ha!

Re: [RBW] Need dirt road riding tips...

2013-11-11 Thread cyclotourist
Michael, sounds like a perfect route! What kind of grade does it have
going up or down? If it's mostly flat, just keep pedaling! The worst
thing you'll experience is deep sand (especially if there's a lot of
construction traffic) and maybe washboard ruts.

Your bike is perfectly set up for it, although maybe a bit high
pressure on front tire. Check out this to confirm:

Michael, sounds like a perfect route! What kind of grade does it have
going up or down? If it's mostly flat, just keep pedaling! The worst
thing you'll experience is deep sand (especially if there's a lot of
construction traffic) and maybe washboard ruts.

Your bike is perfectly set up for it, although maybe a bit high
pressure on front tire. Check out this to confirm:

It cuts through a wooded area, runs along a river, and looks to be wide

fun and hopefully will be nice riding in such a secluded and private

  I use Marathons at 55psi.
I guess go slow and keep it in a gear that you can just stay in the
 whole

What should I look out for/avoid on these types of dirt runs?

  Thanks for any advice.

Amazing weather for both days. Very glad I was able to ride with folks

[RBW] Re: Safe to ride with a slammed Nitto seatpost?

2013-11-11 Thread Joe Bernard
I don't think it's a good idea. Aside from the possible slippage issue,
you'll get the squiggle lines all over your nice Nitto post. I'd snag a
Kalloy for $20 from Harris Cyclery for this project.

Is it ok to clamp a Crystal Fella' at that point of the seatpost, where

I told my wife she should ride my Alba Bleriot. She agreed. But I would
need to slam the seatpost to get her even close to Riv-recommended SH of
 64.5cm.

I view this as the first step in convincing her to get a Riv Mixte. The
direct asking approach didn't work. She said her 350$ Raleigh is fine, but
 I know better. Ha ha!

[RBW] Re: Flash CO Pikes Peak Ride

2013-11-11 Thread hsmitham
Deacon outstanding! I like the fact that though you have scent sensitivity
you will accommodate those by riding up wind. I agree with Doug spontaneity
is a great thing, keeps things fresh...and if I could I'd be there with as
little scent as I could manage. Look forward to seeing the pictures for
what I know is amazingly scenic terrain you fortunate fellow.

Seeing all the fun SoCal and Portlandia are having I thought this may be
 worth a go.

When: Saturday, November 16, meet at 9am and plan for the day.
Where: TBD. Depending on snow the day(s) before and rider preference,
 options include:

 — Phantom Canyon or Cold Camp Road (dirt railroad grades) (meet near
 Cripple Creek)
 — Manitou Lake to Deckers (option to Buffalo Creek) and back (paved,
 fairly secluded mountain road)
 — If not too snowy, ride some Pikes Peak single track starting off the end
of Edlow Road west of Woodland Park.

Location will be chosen based on riders interest and/or weather (the first
two should be ok, the latter can be problematic depending on snow amount at
 higher elevations.).

Let me know if you are interested. Final ride info will be posted Thursday
or Friday. My participation is dependent on my brain capacity Saturday, but
I am foolishly hopeful! If you have scented laundry detergent or
soap/shampoo etc., I’ll just ride on your windward side. Grin.

 With abandon,

[RBW] Soma Grand Randonnee, from a Rivendell perspective

2013-11-11 Thread Jim Bronson
Why, as a discerning Rivendell owner, should I not like this bike? It
comes in a 65cm and it costs $489 for a frame and fork.

Obviously, it's not lugged, but I have other bikes that aren't lugged.
The chain stays are non-ideal at 42cm. (my Riv has 46cm chainstays!)
The bend on the front fork is not so pretty like on a Riv.
I'm a bit concerned about the top tube being only 61cm in the 65cm size.
But could probably be compensated for partially with a stem that has more
horizontal run to it, or an offset seatpost, or both.

Other than that, I'm finding it hard not to want to get this frame. I'm
thinking of culling the herd and buying one. I have a few bikes that I
don't really use enough to keep that could probably add up to $489 or more.
I have a lot - a lot! of parts on hand in various areas of a bicycle so
wouldnt need to acquire much.

The plan has been to convert my Riv to 650b but I could just leave it alone
at 700c and buy the Soma to put the 650b stuff on to.

Hmm.

[RBW] Any Rivsters here commute more than 10 miles one-way? Cold weather tips?

2013-11-11 Thread Esteban
10.5 mile commute each way here... In San Diego. Before you snicker, it will be
in the upper 30's at my house come winter mornings, but really can't compare.
That being said, some wool gloves and neck protection helps until the body
warms up 10 minutes in...

But there will be those low-60s mornings now and then. Some wet... Many sunny.
