Tony I read a nice tutorial on the 'net, but it's really not complicated. I'll describe the process for the stem. The stem had an unfinished forging parting line on the underside of the extension, so step one was some file work. I knocked down the parting line and hit any significant nicks or notches. Step two was to Easy-Off it for about 90 seconds. Just coat the thing with easy off and let it sit. This gives you a good head start with anodization. Then wet sand everything with 400 grit paper, until it looks uniformly scratchy everywhere. Then go again with 600, 1200 and finally 2000. Not sure if anyone has pointed this out, but the orange/blue was in the first run of the Hillbornes (I have one downstairs). This bike is a flatter orange instead of pearl, but i like the combo--in fact thats why i have blue hb tape on mine! i like the small details like the two spellings on either side. the blue fill of the heart, not so much, but it's hard to top the betty foy. i'm not sure that it's necc. to have an alternative to the betty foy, it seemed like that bike had plenty of cross-over between men and women. and they could've just used a different color on the next run or do the same thing with the decals (like a siamese twin, different names on either side). so waiting to hear from grant what this bike offers over the betty foy beyond aesthetics. too bad about the orange for me, but it's been a few run of bikes in the blues and greens so i guess it's due in the rotation. Re: [RBW] Re: My new-to-me 'Beamer
Thanks, Minh, and all; I'm really happy with this one, so glad that Frank offered it to me here locally. Our South Florida roads are--ahem--not the most friendly for bicyclists, but the cycling community here is more active each year, and the weather is mostly cooperative, rain being the only natural hazard (and the occasional hurricane). Everything I have read about the QB feels spot-on: it just makes you want to go, and it may well become (as Frank predicts) my daily commuter. The Pasela 35s feel good, but I will try bigger tires too--he had Conti Cross tires on it, I think, which made me want to find paved trails, or more challenging terrain. BTW, very impressive, Ray Shine, that you can ride Mt. Tam on the QB--suddenly, it's an All-Rounder! (As any bike can be--the engine being a big factor, as GP offers in *Just Ride*). So far, in this flat terrain, 40/17 gives me an easy-going ride, and I think I'll appreciate a 16 in back to let me dig a bit deeper. This is a great bike; will post more photos as I sort it out; it's a well-chosen green, to boot. Thanks, Rivfolk. --Tom On Tue, Dec 31, 2013 at 10:58 AM, Minh mgiangs...@gmail.com wrote: Tom, Congrats on the new-to-you-QB. it's always nice to see a matching green one finding a new home. Re: [RBW] Cable End Soldering
Hi all, I use Shoe Goo almost always. Open the cap, poke the cable end in, pull it out, wipe excess if any and done. Too much makes difficult to reuse a cable. The downside is it can attract dirt. The size is marked as 28 x 1.75 which translates to 700 x 42, at least on my 23mm-wide rims, so maybe 43mm on a wider rim. [RBW] QB love
Just a note here to say that I have a lovely orange QB, given to me as a gift. I've had it for 6 years, and Friday I rode it on a 200k permanent/brevet up around Yolo Solano counties. It was delightful. This is the longest ride I've done with it, and will most likely change the gearing. I have a 40x17, and it was a bit too easy climbing and at times I felt like I was over spinning. Or spun out? Either way, should I drop the rear cog to a 15? Or go to a 42 or 44 front chain ring? Also, I'm on the hunt for an albatross if anyone has one for a new fun project. Thanks! -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. I have marked the area where the fenders are a bit wide and used a heat gun on low to soften the plastic. I use a dowel to replicate the approximate shape of the chainstay. [RBW] Re: Fenders and chain stay clearance
I've done it two ways. On one bike the fender fit in there just a TINY bit snug. It barely touched, but it did touch on both sides. The pressure was so light that over bumps it would CLICK! and drive me nuts. For that bike I did a small indent, so there is a tiny bit of clearance and quieted the fender down. For another bike, it wedged in there a little bit more snugly, and I left it alone. It's nice and tight, doesn't make any noise and it's not bending the fender enough to make me stress out about it breaking prematurely. I confess I don't worry much over paint. Stuff is going to happen. Second guessing is good, but follow your instinct. Re: [RBW] QB love
I wish someone would give *me* a Quickbeam! If you can ride ss for 200km, then your are strong enough for a 70 -- 75 gear. The 15 t will give you a 72, and a 44 will give you a 70 with the 17 t. Me, I'd opt for the 44/17 (but then, I'm nowhere near able to ride 125 miles at a go). Scuttlebutt has it that cogs smaller than 16 t give up some measurable efficiency compared to larger ones, so perhaps the 44/17 is the good choice. 44/17 is the smack-in-the-middle cruising gear on my 2X7 Rambouillet, that gets 90% of the use. We need photos, you know. Patrick Moore, who owns no Quickbeam, but who does own 2 Riv custom fixies. [RBW] Re: QB love
I really like the 40/15 on the Quickbeam for fixed riding, but I've been using a 44t ring with a 15t and a 17/21 dingle cog pretty happily, too. In your position I'd change the cheapest part to raise the gear to ~72. A 15t cog will move your axle back 1/8, and a 44t ring would move it forward a half inch. Adding a link to your chain would move the axle back again by 1/2. I'd probably get a 44t ring and add a link to the chain, because bigger rings wear slower, in theory. If I had the $$ and wanted to coast, I'd buy a Rivendell 43t ring and a White Industries Dos Eno (16/19?) freewheel. http://www.rivbike.com/product-p/fw2.htm Philip www.biketinker.com On Monday, December 30, 2013 12:54:40 AM UTC-8, debra banks wrote: Just a note here to say that I have a lovely orange QB, given to me as a gift. Re: [RBW] Re: Cable End Soldering
Is your typical generic brake or derailleur cable today stainless steel? I mean the ones that come in bulk packaging. Shoe Goo: I like that idea; anyone care to post a photo of the final product? On Mon, Dec 30, 2013 at 9:17 PM, Benz, Sunnyvale, CA benzouy...@gmail.comwrote: It is possible to solder stainless if you use the right flux. Look for stainless-specific flux; they usually contain zinc chloride and hydrochloric acid (read: ensure adequate ventilation). You'll want to fray out the individual strands a bit to clean them with alcohol or something similar before applying the flux, and you'll want to be careful with that flux since it's not the gentlest thing in the world. I still occasionally solder my (stainless) cable ends. In fact, for the cantilever straddle cable ends, I usually put a dollop of solder (i.e., excess) at the end to make a bulb (like a spring onion!) so that it's easier to grab ahold of. It's a nice conversation piece for the keen eyes. [RBW] Re: 1 bike? Could you do it?
I still only have one bike. It solves the dilemma of never having the right bike for the situation quite handily. I don't have to worry about not having cantis for mud, or drops for go-fast riding, not enough, too many, or the wrong gearing, tires too small, tires too big, tires with the wrong tread, etc. If I want to ride somewhere or something, I just point my bike, keep pedalling, and hope for the best. It's never not fun. While my choice was not based on any minimalist conceit, the enforced practicality of having no choice in the matter certainly simplifies things. That being said, I'm moving back to LA in a couple of weeks, and will begrudgingly build up an unsentimental beater for shopping and commuting; I'd be absolutely gutted if my current ride got stolen. Ah I guess the simple answer is Yes No. Ha! For the past year I have made do with one bike the A. Homer Hilsen, truth be told I don't commute so I suppose it's not that crucial to have a back up bike in case of a failure/repair. With that said I'm a freak for bikes so back when this topic originally popped up early this year I knew I'd be building another bike an Atlantis, vintage Trek 850 and Trek 660 all of them riv'ed out. But lets just say if I could only have just one bike any of the Rivendell's past or present would suffice. Enough said! I think the new Mixte will be a winner, for riders and for RBW. The longer chainstays fit in with the unracer mindset, and the color is fantastic - no one does Orange like Rivendell. RBW gets to retain the lugs they've already invested in, which can't hurt.
