[RBW] Re: Find your own stick!

2014-04-24 Thread Scott G.
Does this mean that Riv is planning a Vernon Blake edition of the SimpleOne
?

From Classic Lightweights..

The floating chain systems as used by Blake features a triple chain ring
and single freewheel on each side of the rear hub. A steel pulley was
fitted to the rear drop-out which was needed to prevent the chain coming
off when in low gear. He also fitted a couple of chain guides to the chain
stay. Down changes were made with the toe and up ones via a small metal
hook used to pick up the chain. Blake became very expert at this and could
make changes at speed. (3). He had a solution to one of the problems
encountered by modern mountain bikers when using the small chainring in
very muddy conditions: that of ‘chain suck’:

Re: [RBW] Stan's report: Longevity

I'm using Stan's both in a tubeless MTB set up and in tubes on my
Quickbeam, among other road bikes, and it seems to work about the same way
in both. Hear a hiss from a puncture, cuss, stop and look for it--see a
little fountain of Stan's shooting out of the tire, spin tire, the hiss and
fountain diminish and stop, in 3-4 revolutions, squeeze tire to make sure
it's not lost too much air, grin, get on and keep riding...

I never rode these without Stan's. Here is my experience with them with
 Stan's.

Tubed: once the goatheads matured in late fall and early winter, 1 flat
every 2 miles. Many of these would seal, reluctantly, if you stopped and
spun the wheel for 3 minutes, but many would not.

Tubeless: no flats. When I pry thorns from the casing the air will escape,
but a few revolutions of the wheel seals the holes. One experienced in
goatheads told me simply to leave the thorns in the casing and let the
heads break off, leaving the points to plug the holes.

Re: [RBW] Re: Starting to wonder if all this frame stuff really matters.

2014-04-24 Thread Matthew J
Yeah, if we are talking custom, e.g., custom geometry, then that
really changes things as most CF frames coming out of Taiwan or elsewhere
are pretty much stock production sizes. For custom
carbon, you're looking at a handful of very expensive builders - Calfee,
Parlee and Crumpton top the list. However, their custom frames start at
about $3500 (Calfee tetra-custom) and go way up.

In this case my reference to custom and carbon is that there are few (and
in fact I have never seen one) off the shelf road CF frames that
accommodate much over a 25 tire. It is almost necessary to go custom if
you want a road CF with the new smooth rolling wide tires.

As I say above, I paid $3.3k for my lugged steel Spectrum frame and fork,
built by Tom Kellogg and Jeff Duser, two of the most respected custom bike
people out there.

Along with the CF builders you mention, Argonaut is also doing amazing
work. For whatever reason though, CF customs are very pricey.

To be clear, my point is not to compare custom CF and steel prices, but
rather if the road rider is interested in wider tires while there are
plenty of decent off the shelf steel frames that fit the bill, for whatever
reason there are not so many - if any - off the shelf CF offerings.

If you're saying because a frame survives RAAM, then it's a good material,

Yeah, if we are talking custom, e.g., custom geometry, then that
really changes things as most CF frames coming out of Taiwan or elsewhere
are pretty much stock production sizes. For custom
carbon, you're looking at a handful of very expensive builders -
Calfee, Parlee and Crumpton top the list. However, their custom
frames start at about $3500 (Calfee tetra-custom) and go way up.

In this case my reference to custom and carbon is that there are few (and
in fact I have never seen one) off the shelf road CF frames that
accommodate much over a 25 tire. It is almost necessary to go custom if
you want a road CF with the new smooth rolling wide tires.

I think the limiting factor isn't the frame, but the fork! For example, if
you look at the latest Trek Madones, they can fit basically anything as
 there isn't a brake bridge:

  http://s7d4.scene7.com/is/image/TrekBicycleProducts/91948?

The hardest part is finding a carbon fork that will have clearance for
anything wider than 25mm. When I was looking for a 1 fork, I found that
Columbus is the only mfr that still makes a carbon fork in this size that
offers a carbon steerer tube. Luckily, it has enough clearance to fit my
700x25 Michelin tires AND Crud fenders. It is tight, but fits.

There may be a few carbon forks out there that can fit 25mm tires or
wider, but you will need to look for it.

As I say above, I paid $3.3k for my lugged steel Spectrum frame and fork,
built by Tom Kellogg and Jeff Duser, two of the most respected custom bike
 people out there.

Yes, Spectrum frameset is very nice! Tom Kellogg and Jeff Duser
are definitely on the list of top tier builders!

Along with the CF builders you mention, Argonaut is also doing amazing
work. For whatever reason though, CF customs are very pricey.

Not familar wtih Argonaut, but the ones I mentioned are all US builders
who charge more. It is also supply and demand, I'm not aware of any
Taiwanese CF builders who offer frames with custom geometry. Therefore, no
 competition. Good Luck!

[RBW] Re: Haxes and Atchetts

2014-04-24 Thread doc
I get into some pretty knarly firewood, and for the most part use a 26 ton
hydraulic splitter, and even that will get bogged down at times. There are
a lot of little tools like wedges and cant hooks that make wood handling
easier and safer. I have to admit that I'd like to give that tool a try
just to see how it works. I think Finland, like the west coast of the US
is mostly softwoods.

I lived in a house heated with wood logs for 10 years and um not to be a
jerk but the lumber company will deliver it all nice and split for a
nominal fee. For them to run the logs through their huge machines is
nothing to them. plus its pre-dried so you don't have to have a massive
pile of wood sitting outside your house drying for months. We did split
logs on occasion, when the usual guys couldn't deliver in time and its
really not that horrible, you do feel like a lumberjack when you do it so
that is a bonus.

Has anyone used these tires, and are they fast? How do they roll compared

I am far less interested in flat protection than (in order) speed, comfort.

I've used the 559X1 GPs and they are fast but too narrow. 28 mm is much
better, but the puncture strip makes me hesitate. The Primo *looks* very
promising, but before I stock up, I'd like some advice.

[RBW] Re: Compass Barlow Pass 700x38 on Atlantis (pics)

I was a JB guy for years. Loved them and they never flatted.

I tried to get my LBS to put JBs on my Raleigh Professional restoration
(https://www.flickr.com/photos/8379107@N03/sets/72157630959184434/), but
the guy insisted I use the GB Cypres. Wow! My mind was blown. First, I
thought I loved the bike post resto. Then I tried the Cypres on my
Atlantis and loved them there. I'm a total convert.

I have Cypres regular and EL (black walls, boo) and just got the Barlow
Pass. Love them all. Ride is very similar on all. They feel smooth and
fast. Similar aliveness to the few good silk sewups I rode back in the
70s. 700x38 is probably overkill for me, but since I have 700x32 on my
Raleigh, my go fast bike, I have the Atlantis slotted for big rubber.

I still haven't made any big rides yet this season, dorking with brakes and
racks, but I sure love the Barlows for my little 20 milers.

Hey, thanks.

I really like that leather tape. It's old style Velo-Orange. I put it on
in '10 as a temp trial, hence the electrical tape. Lots of sweat and
obenaufs (sp?) is the secret to that beausage.

I picked up the lugged stem on the first pre-order back in the day. It
finally got put on in '10 when I changed out the whole cockpit from
mustache bars. You could only get the one size when I ordered. I really
like it, but I'd probably like it more with 2cm less reach. Not ready to
buy another one, so I'm living with the excess reach. (Oh, poor me)

[RBW] ISO 1 Paul Touring Brake in Black

The Carsick panniers Ron sold me are amazing but the high profile Paul Neo
Retros definetly rub and I don't want to wear a hole in these beautiful
bags. I was looking to either buy one touring brake in black outright, or I
could trade the neo retro for a touring. Or third option I can buy a whole
bikes worth of touring and move the neo-retros over to my MB2. If anyone
has anything that fits the bill let me know, I am pretty flexible. Thanks

[RBW] Re: GAP Trail from Confluence to Rockwood, PA

Nice write-up. I wish I could convince my wife to do a trip like that.

Thanks for sharing.

Riv content: Two Rivendell-inspired riders, two Riv’d out Surly LHTs, a
large Saddlesack, a platrack, and a Slickersack.

This summer my wife and I are planning to ride the entire Great Allegheny
Passage (GAP) trail (150 miles) from Pittsburgh, PA to Cumberland, MD with
our 13 and 11 year old sons. Since we have never cycled the GAP, we
decided some real world experience would help us prepare the boys for the
adventure. We settled on exploring one of the more remote stretches, the
20 miles between Confluence and Rockwood, PA. On Friday afternoon, my
wife and I loaded our two bikes on the car and drove the three hours to
Confluence, PA. We spent the night at River View Kitchenettes, a great
place right along the GAP Trail and overlooking the river. After an
early evening walk around the town, the Trailside restaurant provided us a
great pizza dinner washed down with a strawberry Nestle Quick.

The morning came crisp and clear; it was going to be a beautiful weekend
for cycling. After a delicious breakfast at Sister’s Café, we set off by
10am. Leaving Confluence the trail runs consistently uphill to Rockwood,
PA. The grade is gently but unrelentingly upward with little opportunity
for coasting. However, we were in no hurry and spun along at a
comfortable, leisurely pace enjoying the beauty and quiet of the forest we
rode through. The trail follows the Casselman River, and as we rode we
listened to the water rushing by. The main CSX rail line runs on the
other side of the river and goes through both Confluence and Rockwood.
 Freight
trains rolled through at least every hour. I enjoy trains and was not
bothered by their presence. In reading online reviews of lodging options
along the trail, many reviewers do complain about the train noise,
especially at night. At times we felt like the only people for miles
around. At the Pinkerton High Bridge, next to the closed Pinkerton
Tunnel, about half way between Confluence and Rockwood, we took a break
overlooking the river. Oranges and another Strawberry Quick refreshed.
 Three
and half hours after leaving Confluence we arrived in Rockwood. Did I
say we took a leisurely pace? We did pass perhaps a dozen people, a mix
of bikers and hikers, in the 20 miles.

Rockwood was a welcoming place, and we enjoyed more pizza and some ice
cream at the Mill Shoppes on Main Street. We then explored some of the
more kid friendly lodging options in town for the summer trip, while
waiting to check in at the Gingerbread House BB. The BB was wonderful,
and we spent the late afternoon relaxing and reading on the porch swing.
Sunday morning dawned crisp and clear. After a delicious breakfast at
the BB of blueberry French toast, we headed back down the trail to
Confluence. The downward grade was a welcome relief from yesterday’s
ride and we covered the distance in only two and half hours. Still
 leisurely.

Overall it was a terrific weekend, and we are excited to experience the
whole trail as a family this summer. Pictures prove we did something on
 a trail with bikes:

Re: [RBW] Re: Starting to wonder if all this frame stuff really matters.

2014-04-24 Thread Matthew J
Argonaut is Portland. Check out the website. They wrap sheets of CF to
form the tubes, allowing an infinite variety of tube thickness.
 Fascinating if pricey.

 On Thursday, April 24, 2014 7:08:43 AM UTC-7, Matthew J wrote:

Good Luck!

Re: [RBW] Re: Starting to wonder if all this frame stuff really matters.

2014-04-24 Thread Matthew J
Speaking of Tom Kellogg my uncle is having his spectrum frame from the 90s
repaired after getting hit by a car (torn shoulder but he is ok) and he
said Tom was dropping hints that he is ready to retire soon. so anyone that
was thinking of spectrum or Kellogg custom should maybe think faster, haha.

Tom will be hard to replace. Can definitely recommend his work. Most of
his bikes are closer to the Roadeo than the Atlantis, but he and Jeff do
steel proud. Tom also designs and paints Ti frames welded by the folks at
Seven if you don't want steel.

[RBW] FS: Grand Bois rando bars, Soma Brevet bars + 650B wheelset

2014-04-24 Thread TomT
One of these has to go since I have only one 'rando bike left.
Both are in VGC, both 25.4 clamp.
Grand Bois is 41cm c-c at the drop, ~ 38.5-39 cc- at the hoods depending on
where on the hooks you mount your levers.
Soma Brevet is 46cm c-c @ the drop, ~ 38.5-39 cc- at the hoods depending on
where on the hooks you mount your levers.
One of these has to go, shipping cot is about $10 so $80 shipped for the
GB, and $45 for the Soma.

The wonderful 650b wheelset I listed sometime ago is still available.
Shipping is prohibitively expensive for wheels these days so local sale or
short distance shipping is preferred.
Grand Bois 32h rims, x3, DT/ Hugi 9/10s rear ,silver, Coda by DT front,
black. $275+ shipping.

[RBW] Re: What do you do on your Birthaday?

2014-04-24 Thread Deacon Patrick
Awesome, Hugh! Happy Birthday! Mine's coming up soon and I am looking
forward to whatever birthday ride I am blessed with. Last year's photos
tell me I did a ride and got snowed on and that's when I realized I needed
some birthday ventile!

I love your mug and whole setup. I did coffee on the trail today, but
forgot the stand for the burner (Trangia mini stand, no wind guard). Used
the burner on the ground and borrowed a stick from the ground to hold the
kettle over the flame. A few melted hairs on my hands added to the coffee
aroma. Grin.

Glad you had a wondrous ride and hope you enjoyed the rest of your birthday.

With abandon,
Patrick

Re: [RBW] Re: Starting to wonder if all this frame stuff really matters.

2014-04-24 Thread Bill Lindsay
Argonaut sells me a $6500 frameset that weighs 750 grams (plus the weight
of the fork). Rivendell blows Argonaut out of the water in dollars per
gram value! FACT! :-)

On Thursday, April 24, 2014 2:59:37 PM UTC-7, Matthew J wrote:

Yeah, if we are talking custom, e.g., custom geometry, then that
really changes things as most CF frames coming out of Taiwan or elsewhere
are pretty much stock production sizes. For custom
carbon, you're looking at a handful of very expensive builders -
Calfee, Parlee and Crumpton top the list. However, their custom
frames start at about $3500 (Calfee tetra-custom) and go way up.

In this case my reference to custom and carbon is that there are few
(and in fact I have never seen one) off the shelf road CF frames that
accommodate much over a 25 tire. It is almost necessary to go custom if
you want a road CF with the new smooth rolling wide tires.

I think the limiting factor isn't the frame, but the fork! For example,
if you look at the latest Trek Madones, they can fit basically anything as
 there isn't a brake bridge:

  http://s7d4.scene7.com/is/image/TrekBicycleProducts/91948?

The hardest part is finding a carbon fork that will have clearance for
anything wider than 25mm. When I was looking for a 1 fork, I found that
Columbus is the only mfr that still makes a carbon fork in this size that
offers a carbon steerer tube. Luckily, it has enough clearance to fit my
700x25 Michelin tires AND Crud fenders. It is tight, but fits.

There may be a few carbon forks out there that can fit 25mm tires or
wider, but you will need to look for it.

As I say above, I paid $3.3k for my lugged steel Spectrum frame and
fork, built by Tom Kellogg and Jeff Duser, two of the most respected custom
 bike people out there.

Good Luck!

[RBW] Re: GAP Trail from Confluence to Rockwood, PA

2014-04-24 Thread WETH
Dear Howard,
Thanks. In terms of my wife and riding, it has been an evolution. Three
years ago I was hoping she would ride more with me, and I never thought she'd
do an overnight. We started with very short neighborhood rides, often with the
kids. As she complained about bike fit, I replaced the offending item: new
saddle, albatross bars Until finally last summer we got up to 30 mile rides
and she remained relatively comfortable and really grew to enjoy riding.
Finally she gave me the green light to build her a bike. So I bought a used
surly LHT, powder coated it orange (her choice) and gave her a classic Riv
build. She kept her funky spider flex saddle which she swears by. With the
new bike, I dialed in her fit to maximize longer distances at slower speeds in
relative comfort.
The other approach I took, which was harder, was to remind myself to take it
easy and not to sprint ahead on rides. That was hard at first because I
commute a lot, and it was a challenge to conscientiously match her more
leisurely pace. I often let her take the lead or we cycle side by side and
chat. She in turn has helped me appreciate a more serene way of biking.
All the best,
Erl

Doug,

Thanks! You have a way with brief words packed with wisdom. The Atlantis
had a small set back the front derailleur was problematic but I should have
it worked out this weekend. Because I used a Phil Wood BB the spindle can
be either biased non or drive side making adjustment tricky. The solution
is to set the drive side spindle at 23mm from the drive side BB shell edge.
It'll be photographed soon.

The real and more important question is when do we get to ride together

My wife doesn't feel comfortable on a bike yet and I haven't been able to
get her willing to ride one long enough to get comfortable, especially
since she has at least one wee one to haul. The way we do bikepacking is
pick a destination she can easily hike to just a few miles in. The older
lassies and I ride in loaded with stuff for 6 on our three bikes. I'll make
multiple trips if need be. We try and do a few of those a year, and I do
1-2 3-5 day tours with the older lassies each year.

We mostly focus on the question What do we want to create? Answer: family
time in the remote and quiet wilderness. How we each get there is up for
grabs.

 Dear Howard,
Thanks. In terms of my wife and riding, it has been an evolution. Three
years ago I was hoping she would ride more with me, and I never thought
she'd do an overnight. We started with very short neighborhood rides,
often with the kids. As she complained about bike fit, I replaced the
offending item: new saddle, albatross bars Until finally last summer we
got up to 30 mile rides and she remained relatively comfortable and really
grew to enjoy riding. Finally she gave me the green light to build her a
bike. So I bought a used surly LHT, powder coated it orange (her choice)
and gave her a classic Riv build. She kept her funky spider flex saddle
which she swears by. With the new bike, I dialed in her fit to maximize
longer distances at slower speeds in relative comfort.
The other approach I took, which was harder, was to remind myself to take
it easy and not to sprint ahead on rides. That was hard at first because I
commute a lot, and it was a challenge to conscientiously match her more
leisurely pace. I often let her take the lead or we cycle side by side and
chat. She in turn has helped me appreciate a more serene way of biking.
 All the best,
 Erl

The Errandonnee patch is from Mary G's Winter Challenge:

She's a sometimes poster, quite often Quickbeamer, and I think there are a

[RBW] Sugino GP bottom bracket size?

Anyone used an old Sugino GP 110/74 triple in their Rivendell or

thinking about using, but wasn't sure what size bottom bracket to use. I
already have a spare 118 JIS square BB on hand, and I suppose I could get a
113 and 110 and see what works, but it would probably be easier to know
what to use ahead of time :-)
