[RBW] Re: Well, Damn
Oh, geez. Glad you're mostly intact, so sorry for your bike! What others have said. Photograph *everything.* If you have bruises that emerge over time, take photos every day to show the progress. And be very careful, injuries can appear after a while, so go slow, but check everything out. Photograph everything you were carrying, wearing, riding, etc. By all means, contact the perp's insurance company (you'd be amazed how many people try to sneak by) as well as your own (when I got hit, the perp was uninsured. My auto insurance, UI coverage, paid $50,000 of my medical bills and then another $50,000 pain and suffering award). I assume you were checked for a concussion, but if not...get checked. You may want an attorney, or at least a consulation with one--particularly if you the perp's insurance company comes to with what sounds like an attractive offer you can have right away if you'll just sign a release. Sign no release of claims whatsoever for at least six months, even if you feel OK. Things sometimes don't show up for quite a while. Again, glad you're in one piece. Glad you're OK and in good wit about the crash. 2° what Patrick said, they take the rates to cover losses. Each time I've been hit, the driver seemed more deeply impacted than me when all was said and done (by sheer grace, and deeper into a line of credit with Karma). [RBW] Re: Well, Damn
Och! Chris! Prayers for a rapid and full recovery. Since it is my unwitting area of expertise, here is the brain injury stuff that hopefully will not apply, but likely does to some extend due to the rapid deceleration you, and the brain in your skull, experienced. Any idea how fast the car was moving? Brain issues (no direct impact required for coup countrecoup where the brain bounces around like mellow in a bowl dropped in the floor) can happen in the type of accident your just had (I had one dearly identical as one of my 8 concussions at 25 + 5 mph followed two weeks later by blacking out randomly for 3 months) and may well NOT show up for days, weeks, or even months (depending on lots of factors, including how soon you return to your normal routine and discover the world just seems harder without any obvious explanation. After my last concussion it took 6 weeks for full symptoms to happen. Presume you have at least a mild concussion and treat yourself accordingly. Rest as much as your body wants to. Eat lots of the darkest chocolate you can find, along with taking calcium/magnesium supplements, arnica, and chamomile, Vitamin B-12 Methylcobalamin sublingual (10,000 mcg/day), and eating ceylon cinnamon sticks a wee bite at a time, up to a stick or two a day. All this helps flush out the various chemical cascade that helps in the instant of the crash but causes problems over time. Also, remember there is a snowball effect to concussions. Once you've had one, you're more likely to have two, more likely to have a third, etc... And later, lighter concussions can seem to cause more damage due to previously caused cracks in the neural infrastructure. Give yourself time before getting back to doing anything more physical so your body awareness and motion and coordination returns to normal. I pray you need none of this and the initial diagnosis that you are fine is true. However, ER's are notorious for ignoring the realities of head injuries and not preparing folks to watch for signs of a brain injury occurring in the days, weeks, and months ahead. Frankly I'm stunned if the ER did not mention that possibility to you and give you things to watch for (which ought to be malpractice now, but isn't). Dude! Your helmet is a goner, which inherently means your brain went for a tumble in your skull. The simplest thing to watch for is noticing the the world just seems harder in ways you can't understand, doing things you used to do all the time with ease, or far more slowly that others now seem to do them. Feel free to write me here or off group if you have any questions. Rest and heal well! [RBW] Re: In-Racer Sports Nutrition?
Yes, Eric. 5-8 hours of bike riding on mountain trails each of the three days, without food (I had it with me, just was never hungry). Usually, I eat once a day. Once you understand that our body has enough fat to power us easily for a long time (even if you're down to 5% body fat), and once you have your body trained to function and excel in fat burning mode (vs fat storing mode, which is triggered by eating carbs), then going for three days is not a big deal, though I've only done it a couple times as I'm usually perfectly happy to eat my meal a day when I'm out there (I eat two a day at home). So a 8-10 hour ride without is really no big deal. Seriously. Google fat burning vs. storing and see what you get. [RBW] Re: Well, Damn
Yikes! Glad to hear that you escaped relatively intact. Patrick M. gives great, salient advice. You will probably discover more aches and pains (document!) as your body relaxes over the next few days. Definitely get ahold of your auto insurance co if you have any. One of the reasons I'll probably stick with mine is all the phenomenal work they did to settle my bike/door interaction a few years back. Replacement Value is an important concept to get across to the other insurance co (as well as your own, but that is typically not as much of an issue. The current price to replace the damaged items. Clothing, helmet, gloves, packs, etc. And of course the bike. They should cover all ER/doc stuff. (I was ambulance transported for mine, which isn't cheap). If your insurance co is doing their job, they'll pay all that stuff and get reimbursed from the other driver's co. Any financial settlement (real costs plus loss of work, pain/suffering, etc.) is probably negotiated by the other co with you. They are probably hoping you say yes to the first offer, generally speaking, which means they will typically come in low. Once you sign off, it's done. hope that helps. [RBW] Re: Well, Damn
After my left hook in Jan 2013 (on NW Evergreen just after it splits off from NW Cornell, by the Verizon store), I also got left-hooked by his insurance. Fortunately *I* have good insurance. After going into work and getting yelled at by everyone, I spent the day in the ER. The first doctor didn't like my EKG, and worried about heart damage. (I emailed a pic of it to my brother the anesthesiologist. He thought it was a very fine EKG :-) ) Anyway, nothing broken, but I hurt like heck for a few days. Didn't seem to do any brain damage, but my left side, knee mostly, was unhappy for a few months afterward. Oh, yeah, the bike (Rivendell Bleriot) - front wheel was bent, fork was mangled, top tube and down tube were slightly bent - I could tell because the paint was crinkled and flaking. After a framebuilder friend told me it was fixable, but he couldn't get to it anytime soon, I called Rivendell and had a wonderful chat with Keven. We talked about the framebuilders they recommend for this, the Bleriot frame was shipped off, and eventually returned with a shiny new fork (upgrade; Bleriot forks aren't around these days), all new tubes from the SS couplers forward, and a spiffy new paint job. My LBS rebuilt my front wheel with a new rim and spokes. The SON28 hub was fine. So, yes, do talk with Riv about repairs. They will do right by you. Re: [RBW] Re: Well, Damn
We are the place for good advice on this sort of thing! I especially agree with the two Patricks. Our legal/medical/insurance system is built on short-term adversarial relationships, but this kind of accident can be long-term life changing, especially if you feel like jumping up after being hit right away! Document, notify, get expert evaluations of body and bike, and make no assumptions of good will from the other party, or make any hasty agreement with them. I agreed to getting a new wheel after discovering the woman who hit me had not notified her insurance and tried to deny she had hit me, but over time, I discovered the frame was no longer true, and the fork eventually cracked, but because it was steel, it didn't fail without warning. My body, well, it was OK after that crash, just a little sore two days later for several weeks... Thanks everyone for the kind words. It's a bit sad we live in an adversarial sort of culture, because it's really easy to see this incident from both sides. That said, I *was* going straight and the car entered my space, so... In any event, I'm going to spend a few minutes today to take parts off the bike to get at the frame and I'll have it looked over. Actually I just looked at the downtube and it's fubar. https://www.flickr.com/photos/lumachrome/15148900746/in/photostream/ Ibuprofen is one hell of a drug and I'm back on my feet today. I have a new business idea though. The gauze the hospital gave me is white, and it picks up cat hair like a moogerfooger, so I propose a custom gauze service where you send in pictures of your cats and it makes a custom colored gauze that matches your cat/dog's coat. You can specify up to 4 different cats by submitting pictures and hair length + size for each, and it will do a simulation to provide the exact match, like camo. I'm not sure what the cause is, but my Flyer experienced a similar change in attitude. It went visibly nose up after a year of riding (~2000 miles). Part of that was how the saddle sagged more in the middle as it wore in, for sure. A couple months ago I carefully punched some holes in the bottom of the skirts, and laced them together (I used a rotary punch http://www.sbearstradingpost.com/3230.JPG, and a shoelace). That reduced sag in the middle, and some of the apparent nose up. But I still had to rotate the saddle a couple bumps forward on the stem. I have no measurements to back it up, but I experienced the same phenomenon. On Sat, Sep 6, 2014 at 10:32 PM, lungimsam john11.2...@gmail.com wrote: I have ridden it in great comfort on it for the last year. Both cycling shorts and regular shorts and pants. Suddenly, I am getting some annoying perennial pressure and I am out of ideas as to what to do about it. More so with cycling shorts, and feels better when just regular pants. It started the day after a 27-mile light rain ride, but the saddle didn't get wet as I had a bag on it. I figured that maybe the wet atmosphere of the long ride made the leather change a little. But the leather looks the same. I have fenders, so there shouldn't have been spray from the tires, either. I tensioned the saddle ever so gently. The saddle has been getting loose feeling anyway over the last few months and readily bows to thumb pressure testing, though it always felt great to ride. But tensioning didn;t make a noticeable diff as far as I can tell. So I checked it out, and the saddle height went down a smidge and the angle changed about .6 degrees, nose up, over the last year from the original set up. I readjusted everything back to where it was. Better, but not perfect like before. I can't think of what else it could be. The bike is all set up the same, as far as I can tell. My only last thought as to what it might be: *Maybe the Flyer springs don't stand as tall after a year of riding and so the saddle need to have the nose lowered more than normal to get the angle right? Do the springs lose a little height after a while that the back end of the saddle wouldn't be as high even though I got the angle back to where it was all along?* Anyone have any ideas or know what causes this? -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] Re: More details about the medium Sackville saddle bag
I have one, use it often, and recommend it highly with one small reservation, which I'll come to presently. One of the nicest features is that one can remove the bag from one bike and put it on another quickly. I also have Acorn and Carradice Super C saddlebags, both of which are excellent, and both of which require opening the bag and fiddling about under the internal dowel to unbuckle the straps, followed by unthreading the straps from the holes in the bag, etc. etc. Kind of a pain. All of the unbuckling, threading, and unbuckling with the Sackville goes on outside the bag. One can do it with the bag loaded, if necessary. As has been mentioned in other threads, the medium Sackville holds much more than it should. It seems magically larger on the inside than on the outside. The side pockets fit a U-lock and zip closed comfortably. The shape of the main compartment is much easier to work with than, say, a Carradice. I have panniers on one bike for when panniers are needed, but most days the Sackville is all I need. I think it looks fantastic, too. I can't speak to waterproofness under downpour conditions, but I've used it in steady rain and had no leakage. The weave is *really* tight. My only reservation about the bag is this: the straps and buckles are not your friends in very cold weather. If you need to put things into the bag and take them out in weather below freezing, and you can buy only one bag, look elsewhere. I tried my Sackville on my Pugsley for a while, but was tired of taking my mittens off in sub-zero temperatures to remove items from the bag. The big plastic clips on my Carradice Super C work much better in those conditions. Note the warning on the RBW site about needing around 11 inches between the bag loops on your saddle and the top of your rear tire. Even with 11 inches, the loaded bag can still rub a little on the tire. I have use the bag on rendered bikes, though, so I haven't had a problem. Re: [RBW] Re: More details about the medium Sackville saddle bag
I don't notice it with my medium Sackville. However, I do use a small leather strap to secure it lightly to the rear rack. Just so it won't shift as much. Will also agree that the straps are less than perfect in colder weather. But as my other bags all have leather straps and buckles, the Sackville might be the the easiest to load and unload. Regular Carradice leather straps and buckles are seriously sub-optimal in cold weather (i.e. below +20F). Howdy folks. I just read that PJW recommends 3x for this hub with this spoke count, but I can't think of any reason why 2x wouldn't be fine. Sure, it's fine. You won't gain much (something like 10g weight savings when you remove 9mm off of 32 spokes), but you won't lose much either, since it's a front wheel. If 2x is good enough for the left-side rear, it's good enough for the front. On Sunday, September 7, 2014 6:04:40 PM UTC-7, Doug Van Cleve wrote: Howdy folks. [RBW] Re: More details about the medium Sackville saddle bag
I've never used my Sackville backs in sub-freezing, so I can't dispute you if you say it's hard to manage, but to get inside the bag you just need to unsnap a snap, right? Two, actually. Does the strap slip out of your grip when you try to grab it to unsnap it? if so, there are solutions to that. I can see that it might be hard to deal with the belt buckle things, but you don't need to deal with those to get into the bag. Those are for setup adjustment. Bill, Right. The buckles are below. I meant the snaps on the straps and the rings through which the straps go. *Un*snapping isn't so hard, but pushing the (cold, stiff) straps back through the rings and getting the snaps to snap is, at least in thick, lobster-claw mitts. [RBW] Any reason not to lace a 32 spoke SON hub 2x?

There's nothing wrong with it, the front wheel is just a tank anyway and I don't really see any reason not to save a few grams in the build. I'm also going to use Sapim Lasers and alloy nipples :^) It's going to be plenty strong enough anyway, I just wondered if there's some reason that's not obvious to me that would make 2x versus 3x lacing matter. Based on Ryan's experience, it should be fine. It's a CR-17 rim, And surely 2x 32 spoke is stronger than 2x 28 spoke… Thanks, Doug -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] Still looking for that big MTB
I have a variety of Rivish parts that I want to move from my neglected MB2 to a bike of more appropriate size for round towning. I am looking for any rigid 80's-90s MTB in the under 500 bucks range around 23. I have been searching ebay for months and yes like a moron sold my Bianchi Grizzly in may, doh. I can buy outright or work out a trade for my MB2. I could also do a mixte trade if someone has a bigger one, also I know hard to come by. Sorry for the somewhat OT post. Hi Peter, Would you be interested in my Soma Buena Vista mixte which is a 58 in pearl white? Frame and fork only. http://store.somafab.com/sobuvifrandf.html It has never had any parts put on it at all. Completely untouched. A project I will never build because I am riding mostly recumbents these days. I bought this partly on what Grant said quite a while ago about the utility of such a bike when we get to the point of not wanting to have to throw a leg over the frame. Maybe not big enough for you. I would take $250 plus half the shipping charge if it might work for you. I am happy to take pictures if you would like. Just ask. -jb On Sun, Sep 7, 2014 at 10:02 PM, Goshen Peter uscpeter11...@gmail.com wrote: I have a variety of Rivish parts that I want to move from my neglected MB2 to a bike of more appropriate size for round towning. [RBW] Re: Any reason not to lace a 32 spoke SON hub 2x?
I have thousands of miles, on- and off-road, on a similar two-cross front wheel (650B Dyad with a SON hub) with no problems thus far. I can't say there's a particularly compelling reason to build it this way, but it's been fine for me and I'm sure it will be fine for you.
