Sports Basement opened a store near downtown Berkeley a few months ago, but I'm not sure whether they rent bikes. If they do, it's a lot closer than going out to Walnut Creek. General warning: Unless you're a regular climber, the slope up to Grizzly Peak or Skyline (the roads near the ridge of the Berkeley Hills) is pretty ferocious. It's part of the classic East Bay roadie route called Three Bears, which crosses the hills and does a big loop on bear-named roads between the hills and Walnut creek before heading back across the ridge to Berkeley. You might want to drive up to the ridge to start. Peter Berkeley lifer Adler Berkeley, CA/USA On Wednesday, July 1, 2015 at 9:14:57 PM UTC-7, Christian wrote: Thanks Ryan and Justin. Think about Patrick , it is the smoke that is immune to the skeeters ... for you to be immune like the smoke you have to be completely and utterly immersed in that smoke ! That means a well enclosed area , no airflow at all , literally a room that is smoke . . . . or a smokehouse . I doubt anyone would find this pleasing in any way . . . and to add to that . . . the moment you leave the smokehouse BAM ! they're waiting for you . Yum yum yum . . . . .lol . So you may now wonder . . . . how can I be immune then ? This question cannot be satisfactorily answered as long as you identify yourself as someone who is vulnerable and in need of protection. For this, there is no protection . Have you noticed, with all these so called smart minds and the smart products and solutions , there are as many skeeters as ever, and as people being bit as ever. Someone else suggested a fan -- would have to be free standing since this is an open patio; but I'd prefer the absence of mechanical clutter. I'll try the Citronella; desultory (or better) Googling raised a modest consensus that citronella candles do work, Consumer Reports notwithstanding, and for $5 I can do my own experimenting. Aside: the very modest backyard is particularly nice this summer, with the trumpet vine covering more and more of the cinderblock walls, a trend I am encouraging with conscientious watering and fertilizer. Our brilliant and blazing sun does the rest. I had 6 additional vines put in and I'm hoping Miracle Gro will accelerate their growth -- a friend told me he gets 40 feet of grape vine growth a year with this stuff. [RBW] Re: Rambouillet vs. Bleriot: your take on it.
I have a 57cm Bleriot and a 58cm Rambouillet. They are two different bikes IMO. The Bleriot can handle much wider tires and that gives it an advantage on unpaved surfaces. It has a smoother, more comfortable ride although I attribute most of that to the wider, softer tires. The RAM is a little more responsive. I've never put much of a front load on either so I can't answer that question. If I could only own one of them, for my type of riding I think I'd pick the Bleriot. Interesting that this question has come up, both bikes have been discontinued for at least five years. On Thursday, July 2, 2015 at 3:33:20 PM UTC-4, Lungimsam wrote: 1. [RBW] Re: Rambouillet vs. Bleriot: your take on it.
I've owned both (plus their twins, Romulus and Saluki), and think there's a slight bias towards tight-switchback-roads responsiveness to the 700c bikes, but not enough that you would notice a difference after a month of replacing one with the other. They all have that magic Riv ride which - in car terms - seems to meld the floating comfort of an old Chevy Impala with the lithe turning ability of a Porsche. They both have a characteristic, identifieable this is a Rivendell ride; however since the Saluki can fit 42mm Hetres (I did, and I believe Tony, the current owner does too) there's that typical, wonderful every road is a smooth road silkiness to the ride of the Saluki that the Rambouillet, limited as it is to 28 mm tires (with fenders) can't begin to come close to. Also: the Saluki is a great bike on gravel roads, as long as the grade doesn't get up into the teens and beyond. There's a lot of wheel flop, and climbing a 14% grade on gravel in a 22 gear it's hard to maintain directional stability. With 28mm tires the Rambouillet for me was entirely unsuitable for gravel, full stop. 2. How does the 700c or 26 wheels make it feel different than the 650b Bleriot? See above re: ride. But note, the geometry of the Rambouillet and the Saluki are very different. 73 degree head angle with the Rambouillet vs 71 degree with the Saluki. That will have as much of an effect as the difference in tire size. 3. Front loads. Do they both carry them well? I never carried a load on the front of the Rambouillet. The Saluki had fittings for a rack, and I had a Berthoud rack on mine (yes, /that/ one). Because the (largest size Berthoud) bag was supported on a rack low down, it handled loads fairly well, with just one exception. Comparing the Saluki to the MAP Randonneur that replaced it, with the same weight of load when straightening up from a turn with the Saluki it felt as though I was lifting the load with the handlebars. With the MAP you really don't feel the load at all. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. Re: [RBW] Rambouillet vs. Bleriot: your take on it.
Howdy, I had a 57cm Bleriot and my wife had a 50cm blue Ram. The Ram had 26 inch wheels and we ran 1.25 Paselas. There was ample room for fenders but we lived in Tucson so didn't have them installed. I can't say too much about the ride quality outside of the fact that she loved the Ram. I would describe the Ram as a road bike with more clearance and the Bleriot as a country bike. They were both very nice bikes but the Ram was much nicer if you inspected the details. I have only heard of problems on the early (Orange) bikes and I thought they were all larger sizes. If you want a more traditional road bike, get the Ram. If you want more of a country/ gravel bike, get (keep?) the Bleriot. Cheers! [RBW] I can't get the shifting dialed in
I'm so frustrated with my drive train. I had Shimano 9 speed bar ends with a front triple. They worked great in index mode. The indexing got finicky so I switched to friction. It worked well for a bit then the ghost shifting started. I switched to Silver bar ends. They feel great but I just can't get them dialed in. I've worked on it it, I took it to my LBS and they tuned it up, but it still doesn't shift right. I had them check for a bent derailer hanger and they said it wasn't. When I shift to the two or three lowest (biggest) cogs, it will not stay on that cog. The problem is worse when I am going from higher to lower gear. If I mess with the shifter it will finally stay in gear, but it's really frustrating, especially when riding lots of rollers. I can't descend a roller and then hit the gear I need for the climb. It always skips out. If I do slight adjustments to the cable tension the best I can do is move the problem from the lowest end of the gears to the middle part. It's driving me crazy! By the way, all of the parts, chain rings, cassette, and chain, are new (they were all bought at the same time and now have around 1500-1700km on them. Any ideas? Both 50 and 52 are 26 for sure. I don't know about 54. My wife has a 50, if you want me to take any measurements or photos. I'm sort of getting the feeling, between these two threads, that you're considering buying one??? My wife loves hers. I think it's really perfectly proportioned, too - when I look at it, I can't even imagine how you'd make a bike this size work with 700c wheels, unless the headtube shrunk to the point that the top tube and down tube lugs overlapped each other. She has never complained about TCO either, which is great for someone that rides only occasionally, and is something that I can only attribute to the smaller wheel. I've never heard of any problems with the smaller sizes, so I'm not sure what to say about that. Both of our Rams (her 50 and my 60) are from the later end of the run. I think hers has slightly less tire clearance than mine, but she doesn't like fenders so its not an issue.Still, she runs 1.25 (35) pasellas with clearance for miles, and has also run 1.6 (42) Marathon Supremes - though they had to be aired-down to fit past the calipers. Re: [RBW] Friction Shifting Dyna-sys
So, ah, what's the benefit of a dyna-sys RD for a mountain bike? I'm not being sarcastic, I googled it but couldn't really understand through all the marketing... Does dyna-sys equal clutch derailer? Is the idea to get better chain tension on bumpy bits? Could you just put a clutch derailer on a friction-shifted 8sp cassette or do you need other special bits? Re: [RBW] Rambouillet vs. Bleriot: your take on it.
Some Rams will take at least 32s and possibly 35s and fenders. When I put 35 Kojaks on mine, there was still a great deal of room under bridges and crown and between fork legs and stays. [RBW] I can't get the shifting dialed in
Another idea: 7. Replace shifter cable housings and make sure they run free with no tight bends along their trajectories. Are they run under bar tape? Try running them free like RBW does it for softer curves and less possibility of binding. Is a front rack bag sitting on top of the cables? Flip the cables under the rack platform to get the weight off them. 8. Is your cable/short housing run from chain stay to where it enters the RD curving too much or too little and causing binding? Also try replacing that length of cable if you think it's old and housing is degraded inside. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] I can't get the shifting dialed in
This is a 9speed drivetrain with Silver bar end shifters. My thoughts are: 1. Tighten up the D-rings in the bar end shifters. When they get loose, shifting stars jumping around. May need tightening twice a week or more. Beeswax works good on the Dribg bolt threads to keep them tight a long time. 2. Look under bottom bracket to be sure the shifter cables are running correctly in their channels and haven't popped out of place. 3. Check both derailers that they aren't bent or misaligned. 4. Check your Rear Derailer limit screws and adjust accordingly. 5. Try an 8-speed cassette and chain, assuming your derailer cages will allow the width of an 8-speed chain to pass through. You might get less auto shifting with the slightly wider spacing of the 8-speed cogs 6. Who built the bike? And are the crank/drivetrain components supposed to play well together? -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] Friction Shifting Dyna-sys
Hi All, Thought some of you would be interested that despite the fact that internet says you can’t mix shimano Dyna-sys rear derailers with anything but Dyna-sys shifters I am successfully running them with shimano ultegra 8 speed bar ends in friction mode. The shifting not only works it works amazingly well. The longer cable pull allows for finer trimming and a greater “sweet spot”. Shifting is crisp and direct which I think is the result of not having that floating pulley. I am running it with and 8 speed cassette, 8 speed chain, and a triple front. Hope this information is helpful. And yes, I can shift across the entire cassette. One more thing: a couple of years ago I hosted a Northern East Bay Mixed Terrain Ride, which linked together a lot of the stuff I was just describing. If you search the list archives you should be able to find my description of the route and could probably piece it together yourself. I'd come with you except that I no longer live in Berkeley...moved up to Sacramento a few months ago. One of the most common routes to get up to Grizzly Peak/Skyline from Berkeley is Old Tunnel Rd, often just referred to as Tunnel, which climbs the hills above the Caldecott Tunnel. It's got some steeper pitches near the bottom and a sketchy bit where you have to cross fast moving on-ramp traffic, but once you get past that it's a pretty quiet road with a constant, doable grade and great views. Any bike shop guy will be able to tell you how to get there. From the top of Tunnel, it's a short jaunt along south along Skyline to Redwood or Joaquin Miller parks. Or, go north on Grizzly Peak Boulevard to Tilden--the interesection basically marks the top of the climb. Note that once you get into the area north of the Grizzly Peak/Claremont/Fish Ranch intersection, everything on the west side of the road is owned by UC Berkeley and is technically off limits to bikes, whereas everything on the east side of the road is Tilden Park, where bicycles are allowed on all of the fire roads and some of the singletrack--check out the signs. Daniel, great question. Based on my own observations and research, it seems the Cheviot and Sam would perform equally well for your application. I don't recall seeing a drop bar Cheviot yet, so if going fastish means aerodynamics and drop bars for you, maybe that says something. Since I have a strong interest in the Cheviot myself, I'm looking forward to other responses on this. Just built up my 60cm cheviut yesterday. Love it. Still in honeymoon phase, but the way it corners on dirt is amazing. Rock 'n road here too with lots of clearance left. The geometry (especially chainstay length) changes quite a bit from one size to the next. Give Keven at Riv HQ a call he will be able to explain a lot. [RBW] my first Riv in the wild sighting
Yesterday I was biking over to our community garden and saw a Riv-in-the-wild. My first. It was a Sam. I was on an Atlantis. I stopped. We chatted. Gotta say... even though Riv's site pictures are really good, the Sam, up close and personal, is a truly beautiful, impressive, bike. There are a lot of Surly's here (Madison, WI). A lot of Giants, Novarras, etc... It's not the same. Will -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] Re: Suggestions please for a Bay Area mountain or mixed terrain ride Friday July 3 or Saturday July 4
Lots of great riding in them thar hills, but Peter is right, pretty much any ride in Berkeley is a fair bit of climbing. On Thursday, July 2, 2015 at 1:46:41 AM UTC-7, Peter Adler wrote: Sports Basement opened a store near downtown Berkeley a few months ago, but I'm not sure whether they rent bikes. [RBW] Cheviot compared to Sam Hillborne?
Hi Daniel, between my partner and I, we have a 60cm cheviot/58 QB and a long 46 Appaloosa custom/50 saluki combos so maybe of some help. All but the QB have Boscos, which has old style mustaches. The long bikes in general: stable in the extreme and designed for upright riding. Gotta dial in handlebars and seat position as always. Fantastic load-haulers and fun ambling Cheviot specifically: step-through means you don't have to swing yer leg over top and you can take a bigger frame. Not bad the older you get, either! Compared to Sam-like bikes, the QB and the saluki feel lighter and quicker handling. The saluki can take loads but not like the cheviot or custom. Hope this provides a little comparable info for your thinking. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. A few thoughts on the Sam side: I couldn't decide b/w the two so I went a 55cm Cheviot and decided to sell it and buy a 51cm Sam web special, happy with that decision. I like the diamond frame more, I have a few tight spaces and stairs I need to haul the bike over and around and like having the top tube to grab. And feel the Sam is a little faster and much better climber if you have hills, maybe its due to the smaller frame size. I also like Albastache bars better than Albastross and feel that the Albastache's are more at home on a Sam. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. I owned both the Romulus https://www.flickr.com/photos/franklyn/2134565361/in/album-72157603538257284/ (which is a twin to the Ramouillet) and the Bleriot https://www.flickr.com/photos/franklyn/5396238348/in/album-72157625675713501/. I looked through my pictures and they represented two slightly different phases of my bike preferences. I was transitioning away from racing bikes and the Romulus was my first foray into into functional steel bikes, and it was an open-wheeled club rider relatively un-enhanced by luggages and fenders. I got the Bleriot after I started riding brevets and it was racked, bagged and fendered from day 1. However, I find the handling, especially on descents to be pretty similar between the two. I don't know if tubing specs are similar. Bleriot could take fatter tires (I rode with 41mm fatty rumpkins) and that might have a hand in how I felt on the bike versus the Romulus. I too own both a Ram a Saluki. They are both great bikes. The Ram is quicker and faster; the Saluki is just a bit less responsive and a bit more comfortable. I run the Ram with fenders, a front rack bag, White VBC compact double, and 29 mm Grand Bois Cerf tires. I run the Saluki with fenders, front rack bag, barley saddle bag, DaVinci triple crank and Pari-Moto tires. Whenever I plan to ride decent paved roads I will always take the Ram; whenever I plan on lots of liesurly dirt roads, I take the Saluki. When my plans change it doesn't matter because the Ram does fine on dirt the Saluki does fine on pavement. When I'm in the barn I'm careful what I say, not wanting to stir up bike resentment; but out of earshot, I think my converted Trek 620 with Pari Motos, does everything the Ram or Saluki can do, except keep me dry in the rain. Re: [RBW] Friction Shifting Dyna-sys
I read all the replies there . and it's based only on mathematical theory , no one actually testes it real world with any friction shifters. While I myself find shifting perfect on standard derailers with it's 2:1 cable ratio , the friction shifters I use, Sun Tour thumbies , have very a generous range . As with all things derailers and shifters . . . . there's spec, which is limited to the paper it is written on , and there's the real world application of it to which limits can and do vary . Sometimes night and day differences ! are all the sams gone now? good for them. i have a sam that fits in the line up as exactly what you're talking about. loaded bike is covered, beater is covered. the sam is just a perfectly capable all arounder that is really fun to ride on the road or dirt. mine is set up minimally, but i like knowing that i could load it up if necessary. im sure the cheviot is equally lovely and capable though. lots of deals arise if youre willing to go used. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] Re: Cheviot compared to Sam Hillborne?
Wait for what Sams to get back in? When I go to www.rivbike.com and click on the Sam page, it says All sizes in stock. I'd recommend buying a Sam right away. I really like those swank black ones. On Thursday, July 2, 2015 at 12:45:54 PM UTC-7, Daniel D. wrote: Thanks for the thoughts, everyone. Googling I could find Sams set up/used in a way I would prefer. But cheviot builds seemed to lean more towards errand or light touring bikes. The more I think about it guess I'll either get a san marcos, wait until the sams are back(big plus, I can save instead of doing a sell off), or go used. I could go test ride a cheviot. But doubt I'd learn anything. Any new bike feels exciting and it takes me a few hundred miles before I notice things :p. Re: [RBW] Friction Shifting Dyna-sys
To quote sheldon: - Shimano Dyna-Sys 10-speed shifters and derailers use a longer cable pull than other Shimano models, and must be used together. And from Riv: FLASH! SRAM's 9, 10, 11sp mountain, Sram 10 and 11sp road; Shimano mountain 10sp dynasys, Shimano 11sp road (Shimano 10sp Road will sorta work but it's hard to dial in the right gear since the cogs are so close); Campy 10/11sp rear derailers don't seem to work with this shifter. the Riv thing refers to their silver shifter, but they actuall do work as well - at least for me ;-). Actually, some years ago now, I had a shop owner tell me it would be professionally irresponsible for a bike shop to consider installing a wide range MTB cassette (back then, I think 12-32 or possibly 11-34) on a road bike, that it would be the equivalent of malpractice, and that he would fire any employee of his who even entertained the notion. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] Re: Mark's/M18 failures?
I really want to get a canti brake bike for my next bike to avoid this and have a rigid, non-adjustable strutted rack to avoid any rotate-able bolt-on stuff for this reason, also better fender and brake clearance. If you are thinking custom, you should also consider braze on centerpulls for the sane reasons. Especially now with Compass joining Paul on the high end. Another nice thing is that it opens up clutch detailer to friction shifting. Re: [RBW] Friction Shifting Dyna-sys
This is an interesting discovery. I agree that clutch derailers are nice to reduce chain slap. I'll have to give it a try next time I pick up a 10s Shimano MTB RD. My attempt will be friction shifting 9 speeds with a 9 speed bar-end.
