[RBW] Re: Didn't see that coming... Segmented Cast Fork Crown on BLUG
I am liking the looks of this segmented look fork crown. This reminds me of when Rivendell first started and was offering the Road, Allrounder and Mountain that were all built by Waterford with numerous options. Riv initially was supposed to offer purposely, proprietary lugset for the Rivendell Mountain with a fork crown design from Mar Mueller. There was not enough demand for the Mountain that they ended up using the Allrounder lugset to build the Mountain. I was always curious what the Mountain lugs and fork crown looked like. [RBW] Re: 1UpUSA Bike Rack and Rivs
I still haven't figured out how to simply reverse Flicker but I think I have decoded Apple. From the intuitive to the obscure. In OS X.9, when you set up an album to share it prompted for a public site. In OS X.10.3 this doesn't happen. Instead you must return to Photos, open the album, identify an 8 point picture of a head on your screen and click on it to get the public option. No help at all from Help. I guess it just another thing Apple wanted to keep secret. Anyway if you still can't get Flicker to work, try this icloud link: https://www.icloud.com/sharedalbum/#B02GFssfGGIBYaP Michael On Thursday, July 23, 2015 at 3:28:14 PM UTC-4, Michael Hechmer wrote: For some reason beyond my understanding Flicker has switched all 5000+ of my photos to private! On Saturday, July 18, 2015 at 6:06:12 PM UTC-5, Michael Hechmer wrote: Thanks to everyone who gave me feed back on how various bike racks worked with Rivs, fenders, racks, and wide bars. In the end we bought the 1UpUSA rack and offer this initial review Bottom line - Rack is an A, customer service is gentlemen's C. First the rack. It is as solid and almost as easy to set up as they claim. Once learned it is pretty simple to live with and works well with my large Saluki and Pat's Betty. Pictures here: https://www.flickr.com/photos/25287678@N08/sets/72157655639570388 It was easy enough to get the rack onto the car, and adding or removing the second carrier is literally a one minute job. I initially ran into trouble getting it set up to work with fenders on 650B tires and had enough frustration to almost send it back. After some experimenting however I got it rock solid. The rack comes preconfigured to work with 700C tires, without fenders or a rack. I bought a pair of the fender adapters to add to the rear supports but found two problems. The rear carrier pinched, crushed actually, the fender stays before getting tight to the fender and the front attachment didn't quite get to the tire before hitting the fender. I lowered both the front and rear bars so that they would hit the wheels sooner. (you can see in the pictures how the tire stops have been lowered. This worked well in the front but continued to bend the rear fender stays. I went ahead and pushed the rear tight. This held the fender very firmly but allowed the wheel to move across the width of the two vertical wheel holders. When I released the carrier from the wheel I found that the stays immediately bounced back into position. You can see this clearly in one of the photos. I decided to simply add toe straps around the rear wheels, which held them firmly to one side. I took the rig out for a shakedown cruise which included 5 miles of dirt road, 5 miles of bad chip and seal and 5 miles of smooth highway. Pat drove while I sat in the back seat and observed the bikes. Given the amount of weight cantilevered off the back of the car and the roughness of the roads there was plenty of movement of the cars suspension but absolutely none between the bike and carrier nor the carrier and the hitch. The second bike carrier can be removed very easily and the whole rig then folds up out of the way, much better than any Tule, Yakima, or Saris rack that I have seen. So A for easy on and off and A for solidness. A for fitting two complex bikes without any interference. Service. Before ordering I sent two emails to the company seeking clarification of their shipping policy. I never got an answer. As I was working through the fender / rack / 650B set up, I called them. I told the nice lady at the other end of the line that I was having problems with the set up, and before I send this back to you I would like to talk to someone who can speak about these issues. She promised that someone would call me but no one ever has. C for customer service. Michael -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] Re: Question re Decal Removal
Benedikt, I'm not sure why mine is peeling. It could have been caused by me, as I have a stand, and I theorize that I might have unthinkingly clamped the bicycle on the decal, instead of on the seat post. Oh well. On Thursday, July 23, 2015 at 3:22:26 AM UTC-5, Benedikt wrote: The decal on my seat tube is cracking and peeling off as well. Been doing that for a long time. Re: [RBW] Dirt Drop stem with Atlantis?
I have a 10 cm DD and 46 noodles on my 56 Samuel Hillborne. I have the stem raised about an inch, which puts the bars exiting the stem about an inch above the nose of my saddle. I I was supposed to get an 8 cm stem, there was a mixup, but in retrospect the 10 is more aesthetically pleasing to me as the 8 has this step below the extension while the 10 has no transition. I ride with TRP levers, interrupters and silver bar ends and I still probably have 5 different hand positions. This is my favorite and most versatile setup. If I didn't like the ergonomics of the TRPs so much I'd try Gevanelles and lose the bar ends which are level with my TT. If this is Eric in Chicago, who I see at the Patagonia store in the winter, feel free to reach out to me to check it out. I have an extra set of 46 cm noodles too. [RBW] Re: Dirt Drop stem with Atlantis?
I run a Dirt Drop stem on my Atlantis. I have for many years. I recommend it highly. Points: The obtuse angle is better on your liver, spleen and bladder in a head on accident than the acute angle of a regular road stem (ex paramedic fretting). I have some spinal issues, and the ability to raise the bars high is the best thing I ever did for my lower back and neck. S comfortable. The seat level bisects the middle of the bar hooks, so I can use the drops at least fifty percent of the time, instead of always being on the tops and hoods. I don't look at the road right in front of my wheel as much...lol. Eric, I would recommend you get the 100, not the 80 mm stem. The stem raises your bars up and BACK quite a bit. I like a short top tube and so I tried the 80 and it was way too short. Of course that is all dependent on frame size, height, physical issues and yadda yadda...Best of luck getting comfy. https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-YrOY-9hjdBc/VbERY2AkJyI/AEE/W2_6nnVK_rc/s1600/IMG_0067.JPG Clayton (Bend) -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. On my Quickbeam there is a slowly increasing stiffness in my headset, but only in the middle (when straight). Actually my partner and I didn't have the best of luck with the Tange Rollerball which my 97 Rive came with. But that was our experience and maybe we did something wrong like overtightened it. [RBW] Re: Headset stiffness, only in middle
I recommend dropping the fork and taking a look. I just went through this exercise and was surprised how little lubrication was in the original bearings. It is fairly easy to clean the bearings, re-lubricate and reinstall. If you've never done this before it's better to learn on this headset than any new expensive upgrade you might talk yourself into. By the way, I tossed the cages and old bearings and reinstalled new loose balls. Eliminating the cages allowed me to install 14 additional ball bearings; 7 top and 7 bottom. [RBW] Bad N+1 bike logic
Here's how it begins. I start thinking it would be nice to have bosco bars on a bike, and since i already have a dedicated mtn bike (hunqapillar) and road bike (gunnar), that leaves my hillborne as my totally superfluous bike, perfect bosco candidate! I start looking at rivbike and adding things to my cart for the bosco cockpit (bars, stem, brake levers, shifters, grips), almost $300 (which is already way more money than I need or want to spend on bike stuff right now). H, the Clem Smith Jr sure is starting to look pretty with those bosco bars, like they were made for each other, and it is only $1400, just $1100 more than than the bosco cockpit and things I'm selling. Not going to do it, but its a dangerous, slippery slope we've all been on. But man, value wise, it seems crazy not to just get the complete with the already perfectly setup bosco cockpit. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. Re: [RBW] Headset stiffness, only in middle
It sounds as if the bearings or the cups are worn in one location, not unexpected with heavy use and perhaps initial overtightening -- the wear would occur first in the most common ball/cup position, which is straight. I've had a similar problem, though with mine, movement through the straight-ahead position felt notchy, indicating fretting. I took it apart, rotated the balls about 90*, regreased, and got quite a few more miles out of it (old Dura Ace cup/cone type headset). Actually, the symptoms would also be produced if the cups weren't seated exactly parallel in the head tube: could something have shifted? I don't see how, though. [RBW] Re: 1UpUSA Bike Rack and Rivs
I, too, can only see the picture of the rack on the car without the bikes, but would like to see how you made it work. Re: [RBW] Dirt Drop stem with Atlantis?
I've been trying to find the right bar/stem combo since I bought a 56 Atlantis months ago. Recently I tried an 8cm dirt drop plus Grand Bois Randonneur bars and it seems just right for me. As others have said, you shouldn't have any qualms about putting a dirt drop on an Atlantis (or any bike for that matter). It's a great stem. Here's a pic. No bar tape yet, but that's because I'm afraid of commitment. https://flic.kr/p/uUrjow The angle of the photo makes the bars look higher than they are. They are slightly above or even with saddle height and super comfortable (on short test rides so far - excited to try it on an extended ride soon!). Good luck! Seems to break things up ... to my eye anyway. Put some stem shifters and/or a brass bell on the quill and that tall neck will virtually disappear. Personally, I think the Dirt Drop looks far superior to a super tall Tallux with a short reach. Another pro is the Dirt Drop is stronger and less expensive than the Tallux. Keep in mind mountain handlebars and road bars have different dimensions. One requires 25.4 stem and the other 26.0. Be sure to get the larger so that rather than having to purchase another stem to switch between the two, you can simply purchase a $5 shim. [RBW] Re: Question re Decal Removal
The decal on my seat tube is cracking and peeling off as well. Been doing that for a long time. Recently I noticed a little of the paint coming off where the decal used to be. About two days later I realized what's causing it. When I come home the bike comes indoors and gets hung up on the wall by the rear wheel. Always the same way. And I always pick it up by the seat tube with my left hand. It's the wedding ring. As I lift the bike and the tube moves in my hand my wedding ring scratches right across that decal.
