[RBW] Weinmann Center Pull Brakes: Tip Tricks?

2015-08-20 Thread Brian Campbell
I am working on setting up a set of Weinmann center pull brakes (610/750
configuration) and was looking for some tips/tricks to get the most out of
them. I am using Cane Creek Aero levers and Salmon Kool Stop pads with
adjustable shoes. I was wondering if there were any other aspects that I
may have missed for improved performance?

[RBW] Fenders: Cream or Silver?

2015-08-20 Thread Fred Craven
I put wider tires on my Rivendell and the existing fenders are, now, too
narrow. So, I'm getting wider ones.

Silver is an old standby (very nice; classic) But I also like the idea of
cream fenders.
Does the Cream match, or mostly match, the Riv Headtube Cream?

Since Rivendell sells the cream, I assume that it looks fine, but I
appreciate your input.

[RBW] Hunqapillar owner opinions and sizing recommendations

2015-08-20 Thread Jason Braaten
Hi All,

I'm considering purchasing a Hunqapillar in the near future, as I want to
combine my love for roads and dirt onto the same vessel. I'm 6'2 with a 34
inseam and typically ride a 60cm st ctc on my vintage road bikes and XL
mountain bike. I haven't measured my pbh, however was hoping to get opinions
from Hunqapillar owners who are ridding 58cm and 62cm's. Curious what the 6' -
6'3 crowd is riding and how you like it. On the road bikes, 62cm is usually a
little too large for my liking. Any opinions are greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance

[RBW] Re: Double leg Kickstands... lets talk

2015-08-20 Thread Woody Peterson
I front-load my bike, so simulated a rear load and yeah, I can imagine the
angled forces that could affect the plate. Under a front load, though,
everything's pretty level and stacked.

Also, I agree with the OP; I bought my Pletcher at Riv's recommendation,
but haven't found it to be wildly better. In fact, here's a more analytical
look as to why it might be worse:

http://www.tamiasoutside.com/2009/04/13/pletscher/

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-oEdB_mhfE0M/VdZbkapMhjI/AfU/XE7gvA6vw-U/s1600/ks12.jpg

I find that the two-legger is slightly better, mostly because I can sink
the legs into soft dirt and it becomes almost un-tippable. Other than that,
one leg isn't that bad (or maybe better).

Re: [RBW] Hunqapillar owner opinions and sizing recommendations

2015-08-20 Thread cyclotourist
Jason, you're taller than me, but I think we have the same length legs. A
61cm horizontal TT frame fits me perfectly. I think the 62 Hunq would be
too big, especially as it has an angled TT. And don't forget you'll
(presumably) be riding with fat tires. You would get a taller head tube and
longer TT on the 62, and maybe that would be worth it to you as you might
have a longer torso.

[RBW] Re: Good Error Resolution from Alex's Cycle in Japan

2015-08-20 Thread zybariver
The main reason is that the Yen has plummeted -- in 2012 one dollar traded
at 76 yen and now it's at 125, a 64% increase. If you buy directly you get
the benefit of the exchange rate.

I'm guessing the domestic wholesalers and retailers are hesitant to adjust
prices down, betting that they will rise again and thus confusing
consumers. Also, if they are carrying inventory, they may have purchased
at a higher price.

The duty on most bike parts is not high and on some pieces it's zero (e.g.
cranksets).

[RBW] Re: Bombadil Off-Road

2015-08-20 Thread Tony DeFilippo
BenG - apologies those are RM14's not 13's... I have ridden a fair amount
with 46 and 48cm Noodles and really like them. I used the 46cm Noodles on
my Bob Jackson this week even. I find the RM14's setup the way they are on
the Bomba to force me into the drops more than I do when riding Noodles
(I've also ridden the Bomba w/ 48cm noodles). Not sure this is a good or
bad thing, there just isn't as much room up on top of the bars and riding
the hoods puts my hands in a pretty narrow (for me) configuration so it's
just more comfortable in the hooks.

So no it wasn't the levers, I could have just as effectively used them from
the hoods position, it was the width of the bars at the hooks as opposed to
the hoods/ramps. Also the weight further down on the front axle felt
better to me, more stable... though I don't know if that is a real thing or
just an unsubstantiated sensation. You can't go wrong w/ Noodles... if you
run across some RM13's or 14's it might be fun to try them out.

Philip - I'll have to look up Shaefers Farm... if any of the mid-atlantic
Riv-Riders wanted to get together for some singletrack I'd love to tag
along. I wouldn't feel comfortable leading anyone around on that kind of
ride as I'm so new to it but I'd love to see some Riv's out on the trail

[RBW] Re: Will Phil Wood hub bolts keep a fixed gear rear wheel in place?

2015-08-20 Thread John Hawrylak
My 1988 Schwinn (Panasonci) Voyageur (vertical rear DOs) was prone to rear
skewing.

Took it to LBS who had a alignment table (Shierk's, East Earl PA) and they
ground the DOs to be parallel. Solved the problem.

I'm assuming Panasonic did not get the DOs aligned correctly. Somewhat
disappointed in vaulted Japanese quality, but it was late 80's. I bought
it from original owner in 2010. Not ridden much for the 22 years

[RBW] Re: Double leg Kickstands... lets talk

2015-08-20 Thread Will @ Riv
Basically it's this, and I'm sorry we've been unclear about it: We have two
kickstand plates, a stout one with almost a quarter inch thick steel and a
lighter one that is about as thick as a nickel. Most recent Taiwanese
frames have the stout plates, and most Waterford-built frames have the
thinner plates, but there's probably some overlap somewhere. You can bolt a
double legger directly to a thick plate and not worry about it, but the
heavy weight and super strong spring of the double will sometimes slowly
pry the thin plates off towards the bottom bracket shell, so if you have
one of those and you want to use a double, use the sandwich hardware and
run the long bolt through the hole in the plate to the kickstand. You can
(and maybe should) do that on the stout plates too if you want to be extra
safe. Singles are what the plates were designed around, and those are fine
on either plate, always.

It's a rare problem, but one we figured out a little late in the game, so
if it's happening to you please give us a call and we'll do our absolute
best to help you. Talk to me or Keven.

[RBW] Re: Weinmann Center Pull Brakes: Tip Tricks?

2015-08-20 Thread JohnS
FWIW, I've used V-brake pads on a couple of bike with center pull brakes.
They are much long and have more surface area than the original block style
pads. The braking is very good with them. I did switch the spacers on the
brake pad posts, the spacer next to the pad is used on the outside and the
outside spacer is used next to the pad.

Good luck,

Cool Mark! I dig slowing the pace and shortening the distance to bring the

same park as the swamp, but this time stick to a proper camp site. It was
also our second anniversary so this would be a nice way to get away
 together.

We left home and it started to rain almost immediately, so we found
shelter in a stairwell downtown. It was over soon enough and we made our
way along the bike paths out of the city, by which time it was blue skies
and hot hot hot! A warm tail wind pushed us along the trail as we sipped on
Radlers and dodged Canadian Geese on the path.

Rolling into the park a few hours before sunset, we lay on the beach and
went for a swim. Then it was a campfire and sleeping under the stars.

In the morning I realized I forgot my stove burning element, and we had
used up all the firewood the night before, so we hit up a fancy restaurant
in the park. Felt a bit out of place in my muddy clothes, but what can you
do. A man needs to eat. Afterwards we had a tail wind blow us back home.
Had a wonderful time and substantially more relaxed than the swamp ride,

[RBW] Re: Double leg Kickstands... lets talk

2015-08-20 Thread Larry H
I've had a double leg attached to the plate on my Sam Hillborne since
2012. It's been on and off a few times with no damage noted. Granted, I
do not heavily load the bike for touring. I run a trunk sack in the rear
with maybe 5 pounds at the most. This does cause the bike to rest on the
rear tire with the kickstand down.

Another point that no one seems to have mentioned is that the double leg
does not fit on the plate out of the box. Mine needed to have quite a bit
of material filed off just to fit the stand. Thus, I doubt that the
installed weight is the same as the factory weight. I don't see the weight
of the kickstand being a factor in deforming the plate. It has to be the
side to side forces that would cause damage.

At this point, I may remount per Riv's new recommendation with the top
plate and plastic chainstay protectors.

some it does, for others, we use the tention tools.

My question is about tension evenness. I got the wheels up to a pretty
high tension, and they are round and true.

However, there is some variation in tone when I pluck the spokes. How good
is good enough? If all spokes have pretty good tension, how much
variability is acceptable? I only have tone to guide me. Is a semi-tone or
whole tone (for the musically inclined) of variability ok?

In some ways, I feel like having good tension and a true wheel should be
good enough, and I notice that sometimes when I push for more perfection in
one area, it can cascade to everything else getting worse.

For some more background on the build, I used Jobst Brandt's book and
Sheldon's web page to guide me. It is 650b, 36 spoke, Velocity A23 with a
Shimano XT FH-732 rear, and SP SV-8 in the front. I used Sapim DB spokes
(with 14-15-14 for everything except NDS rear which is 14-17-14).

 Thanks!

Since this means tourers, I don't think the consumers would mind a built in

Other, non-touring specific models could just have regular plates for one

 Hey Riv folks,

I have a new (as in zero miles) 58 cm Fuji Connoisseur that I'd like to
sell, at what I think is the extremely attractive price of $495. This is a
retro inspired modern bike with Reynolds steel frame, downtube shifters,
long reach brakes and other Riv-ish goodies. These sold for just shy of
$1,000 in the Performance catalog, then were reduced to $700 when I saw
them being closed out. I noticed the bare frames on closeout at Nashbar for
$400, but they are long gone now. I purchased this one at the Performance
store in Chapel Hill, NC, home of Performance. It had been used in a photo
shoot, then kicked around the warehouse for a couple of years until I
bought it late last fall. I purchased it for a friend, being far too big
for me, but his wife banned the new bike acquisition, so I'd like to get it
out of my garage. Absolutely new, never ridden, with the only known issues
a couple of minor scuffs in the paint and on the saddle corners from
 kicking around the Performance warehouse.

 Major features:

- Reynolds 725 Cro-Moly butted steel tubing
- 1 Cro-Moly steel fork with lugged crown
- Beautiful blue paint, with mostly *silver* components -- extremely
unusual and nice for a modern bike!
- Brakes Long reach (47-57'ish mm) Dia-Compe BRS-101
- Brake Levers Tektro polished alloy
- Down-tube shifters Sun-Race SLR63 (8 speed index or friction)
- Silver Tange traditional headset
- Crankset Fuji Alloy Forged 42/52T Chainrings
- Bottom Bracket Sealed Cartridge Square Taper
- Pedals Fuji Alloy Platform
- Front Derailleur MicroShift FD-R52
- Rear Derailleur MicroShift RD-R44S
- Cassette Sunrace, 12-25t, 8-speed
- Chain KMC HG-73
- Rims Alex RDP15, Double Wall, 32-hole
- Hubs Formula Alloy, Sealed Bearing 32-hole with quick release,
8-speed freehub
- Tires Continental Ultra Sport, 700 X 23c
- Handlebar classic bend Fuji Alloy
- Stem Fuji Alloy 1 Threaded
- Saddle Fuji Classic Comfort with Rivet (San Marco Regal knockoff)
- Seat Post Fuji Micro-Adjust Alloy, 27.2, 300mm

As I said, new, but with a few minor scuffs on paint and saddle corners.
Great commute bike with braze-ons for a rack and plenty of room for chunky
tires. Priced at $495 + shipping, or can be picked up in the Raleigh, NC
area. I prefer to have the bike packed and shipped by an LBS, to minimize
hassle and risk. I called a local shop who quoted $35 for packing,
 including all materials.

Someone please buy this, honestly it's a surprisingly nice bike for less
 than $500!

 Cheers,

 -Jack

it did get me thinking about having an orange one. The owner had
listed the bike on CL - Dayton, and also eBay. I ended up bidding on
the bike on eBay and won the auction. I was already planning being in
Columbus (~1.5hr from Dayton) the following week, so I asked the
seller to hold it. Picked it up a week or two later.

Anyway, I know a couple guys at Holmes, and one of them (a mechanic)
had asked if he could borrow my orange Ram for an extended test
ride. That was a couple weeks ago, and he still has it. So...if
you've seen (or heard about) an orange Rambouillet there, it's almost
 certainly mine.

Of course, I just recovered my stolen Rambouillet a little over a
month ago (still can't believe it), so I now have an extra.

[RBW] Re: questions about buying /selling a bike on this group

2015-08-20 Thread Kieran J
Does the US have an equivalent of Canada's Interac EMT? It's an inter-bank
money transfer using email.
I've asked this before on similar threads but don't recall what the answer
was.

http://www.interac.ca/en/interac-etransfer/etransfer-detail

It works very well - much preferable to PP if you ask me.

 Hi,

I am new to this group and am thinking of buying and selling some Riv
bikes in the near future. I have a questions:

How do you deal with the transaction securely? Do you just trust that
the person will ship the bike after you pay him/her? At least Ebay has
 procedures in place.

This works on both sides of the transaction as i wonder how someone would
trust that i would ship after receiving his money.

Let me know how you guys usually deal with this.

 Thanks,
 Bill

[RBW] Re: Weinmann Center Pull Brakes: Tip Tricks?

2015-08-20 Thread Ron Mc
The best I've used are Kool Stop Dura cartridges (I've also used Eagle 2
rear and Continental front, Yokozuna pads and, of course, original
Matthausers)

I think the extra leverage of cross brakes (interrupters) or moustache
cockpit helps quite a bit, as well.
The first place I ever used Paul Moons were on these, and I believe they
also improved everything about them - they certainly make them easier to
adjust. At the time, I found the Moons for $22.
Good brake housings matter, and I like Aztec duracote cables.

adjustable shoes. I was wondering if there were any other aspects that I
may have missed for improved performance?

Fred-

The headtube doesn't look cream in those photos. It looks closer to white,
like the Atlantis headtube.

Of course, it could just be the lighting.

What did you end up buying by the way?

Very nice! Joel Stern seems like a heck of a nice fellow...and I'm so sorry
he's not riding these days. Looks like the bike found a good home and I'm
sure it's the right choice to rediscover your love of cycling. That is a
beautiful colour; I've always liked it.

Well, actually it is a rather light cream. Next to the green, it kind of
looks white. Here's what she looks like the garage. (the pretty blue spill
 is not toxic)

[RBW] Re: Will Phil Wood hub bolts keep a fixed gear rear wheel in place?

2015-08-20 Thread Ginz
I sold mine long ago, but they were rock solid. The bolts take a 5mm hex
if I recall. Best to carry a newish L-shaped one so you can torque it well.
