[RBW] WTB: Nitto Tallux 130mm

2015-09-08 Thread cyclotourist
My 100mm Technomic isn't cutting it with the new Albatross bars.
Any used 130 Tallux out there? 120mm might be okay as well.

Use a flat piece of stiff aluminium or fiberglass between the rack and the
basket, it will help disperse the cyclic impulse impact forces that the
thin Wald wires are unable to absorb. Or get a more rugged basket.

[RBW] Re: How to get out Brooks sit bone divets sop the rear frame down;t dig into my rear end.

2015-09-08 Thread Lungimsam
I'm thinking of a step by step:
1. Tension saddle
2. Proof hide top.
Wait a day or so and see how it feels. If that doesn't work:
3. Tension more.
If that doesn't work:
4. Imperialise it with a cutout, and see if that flattens out the top.
If that doesn't work:
5. Install new Imperial saddle.
6. Find a nice place in the house to place honey Flyer as a decoration and as
memorabilia for all the nice rides I had on it.
I'll be disappointed though to learn that a Brooks is done in less than a year,
though. I might contact Beooks for warranty.

[RBW] Re: Tested 6 pairs of 700c (29in) tires - results and impressions

2015-09-08 Thread Lungimsam
Matt,
BQ studies tire construction to determine which designs give the rider the
fastest and most comfortable ride quality.
It is alleged that the speed percentages measured in the BQ studies (like the
slowest tire tested was ~20% slower than the fastest tire tested., iirc) adds
up over long distances. So a 10 hour ride with the slowest tires, in theory,
would take only 8 hours on the fastest tires.

I have not noticed significant speed increases with GB or Compass tires over
others I have ridden. But they are very comfortable, seem to keep their
momentum up very well when starting up a hill, and their cornering is
fantastic. I didn't get the last two benefits from my Schwalbe Marathons,
though they were also excellent tires.

[RBW] Re: How to get out Brooks sit bone divets sop the rear frame down;t dig into my rear end.

2015-09-08 Thread Bill M.
If the leather has truly stretched to the point where you have a distinct
center ridge and two deep "cheek pockets", just tensioning the saddle won't
help. It will just make the ridge all the more prominent, and you won't be
any more comfortable.

When you are ready for drastic measures:

Soak the saddle in water. Really soak it, like submerged for a week in a
tub, with the tension bolt fully slack. That will soften the leather
enough that it can be reshaped. Reshape it by hand, massaging the ridge
down and the dents back to something that looks like a new saddle. Stuff
something waterproof into the saddle and truss it up to hold that shape,
than let it dry thoroughly. Give it time.

Once it's dry, polish it as best you can with Proofide (or your favorite
balm). The surface won't be as shiny smooth looking as a new saddle, but
it was unrideable anyway, right? DON'T apply a bunch of Proofide to the
bottom, that will soften up the leather again and you don't want that.
Just polish the top like it was a pair of dress shoes.

Before riding the saddle, put a bit of tension back on the leather. Don't
overdo it, but as you ride it do add a bit of tension as needed to help
retain the shape. To that end, two more things to do. One, lace the
skirts. That will help the top stay flatter. Two, if you're brave enough
to go this far, cut out the center of the saddle a la Imperial / Anatomica.
Fancy shaping not needed, just a nice oval cutout. If there's no material
in the center, there is no way for a ridge to reform. I have posted on
that topic before.

I have soaked, reshaped and cut out a B17 (granted, a late-90's vintage one
with very good leather) and it made the saddle much nicer. These days I
prefer my Rivet, but the hacking the otherwise-useless B17 gave it a new
life.

[RBW] The Impossible School Commute

2015-09-08 Thread LeahFoy
This year we enrolled the boys in a new charter school. It is over 2 miles from
home and a VERY challenging commute - all downhill to school, all uphill home.
It's the kind of hill that cyclists in Lycra who ride carbon bikes flock to for
the challenge. No one thought this was a viable bike commute, at least not with
children. It's too hot, they said. That hill is too steep, they said. Your
younger child is only six, they said. My kids would never do that, they said.

We've made it most days and it sure has been freeing! Further bolstering my
decision was a giant neighborhood squabble on the Nextdoor app. There was
outrage over parents parking all over the neighborhood, blocking driveways and
driving erratically. It got all sorts of nasty, so I finally chimed in. Since
there are just too many cars and no place to park them, I encouraged those
parents who head home after dropping off/picking up kids to bike with their
kids. (I totally kept it from being preachy. I was going for a
you-want-what-I-got approach.) I told them I meet lovely people, get exercise,
and best of all, I'm not angry. I nudged then into getting a commuter with a
shiny new bell and a basket. And then I said they must come to dinner at my
house so we can chat all about it. The next day people were honking and waving
and yelling, "Go, Leah!" on the way to school. Since I was practically the only
biking mom out there, I was recognized easily. Pedestrians stopped me and said,
"You must be Leah!" I made a plethora of friends overnight. Now I ring my bell
and wave and yell "Good morning!" and people love it. Best of all, I now see
several parents on bikes dropping off and picking up with kids at school. What
a welcome sight!

I put one photo here, but check out the other recent ones in the album.
Pictures proved you can change your collective attitude, one bike at a time.
Also, please notice my bicycle necklace because it's DARLING.

I will add this here too:
https://flic.kr/p/pMrzXJ
Wald intentional mini porteur rack by JimG.

I usually only use it for bulky, but not super heavy stuff. On the front of
my big dummy. But the load is much better spread out and much less
cantilevered out as well compared to your tiny footprint basket support.

Works well with the WALD 139, designed to also work with the wald 137, but
I have not tried it yet. (the two baskets that riv sells). I am with Shawn
though, the Wald giant delivery basket has handy bands that support the
load well,it would be nice to see that on the 139 too. You should be able
to easily use some wood to spread the load under the wald basket, but as
others have noted, you are clearly in Cetma country for the front load if
you are breaking baskets that often, get a demi porteur rack and have less
breakdowns.

Enjoy

I did this ride last year. You don't need a rusa # to register and I still
don't have one. I think you do need to register before the day of though. They
make a brevet card for each rider and those are printed before the event. I
don't think they are set up to print them at the event.

Based on the description, it did sound like a fun and more reasonable entry
into randonneuring than some of the 200k rides. I've never tried one
before but wanted to start. However, the electronic registration form
won't accept my registration without an RUSA number. I need to submit an

Yes ! I was considering adding a wire basket to my mini Nitto but the idea
never sat well to me, just too small of an area to be attached leading to
increased stress in areas undesigned for it.

So a porteur rack it is for me , likely the VO model as it includes a little
larger fence than the Soma's optional one. The tang on VO is also an
under-the-fork crown type which I need with canti brakes.

Me too. There's an alloy FSA with that same 32.5mm setback -- the

It's not exactly beautiful but it works well. I have one on a bike but I had

[RBW] Re: C&O in October

2015-09-08 Thread Pondero
A thread refresh to remind DC area folks that my trip is still a "go" and
there have been no changes in the dates (October 6-9). A month from now,
my son-in-law, Steve Butcher, and I will be touring through the C&O trail.

We'd love to met and ride with some of you locals, if possible.

[RBW] Re: FS: 56 Atlantis

2015-09-08 Thread Pondero
Thanks, Tony. For me the Atlantis is slightly on the too large side, and is
my best bike for a only tiny percentage of my applications. My next
project should fit better in my stable.

That said, the 56 Atlantis should prove to be a perfect "all road enduro"
bike for someone. After yesterday's ride, I considered putting drops on it
and keeping it.

[RBW] Re: So why no Titanium Wald basket?

2015-09-08 Thread Garth

Wire baskets were never designed to be mounted on top of racks were they
?

As Anton stated if your going to mount it on top of racks by all means
reinforce it ! You'd do the same thing with a woven or bamboo basket too .

Or get creative. There are lots and lots of wire baskets out there . Many
are a heavier gauge , like this one for example :

[RBW] Re: Handlebar Comparison: Albatross, MAP/Ahearne, Jitensha, VO Postino

2015-09-08 Thread Surlyprof
I believe mountain bars are usually the wrong diameter tubing for bar ends.
More significantly, the shifters would stick out to the sides with those bars
and probably catch on everything. They tend to work on the more swept back
bars like the Albatross and Albastache (although I did hit them with my knee
when I had them on Albatross).

[RBW] Re: Handlebar Comparison: Albatross, MAP/Ahearne, Jitensha, VO Postino

2015-09-08 Thread Ron Mc
there are some paul thumbies for sale right down the page. They make a lot
more sense with this bar. But I do not believe the "mountain" bar will
take bar end shifters.
