[RBW] Re: Racks for the Clem

2015-10-31 Thread Tim Wood
I just realized that my Tubus Tara won't work on the Clem without installing
mid fork clamps.

Does anyone know how the surly front rack would line up with the higher fork
braze ons on the Clem? What about the mid fork struts on the new soma porteur
deluxe? Maybe I'll have to pony up for the nitto campee with the removable low
riders. I want to be able to run a basket and panniers up front.

Why does rivendell have to be different and mount their braze ons higher that
the majority of manufactures?

And what about the braze ons on top of the fork crown? Is there a rack that
attaches there? I think I remember seeing a rando rack that did. Cycles
Touissant out of Calgary maybe?

So many questions.

[RBW] Anyone order a Joe?

Everything about the Joe works for me so I went ahead and pulled that trigger

I don't have any problem waiting to March to get it. The little mysteries of

[RBW] Re: Racks for the Clem

2015-10-31 Thread Garth
Tim, the Soma struts are angle adjustable , so they are fine.

The Surly is also adjustable but in a different way . From the photo here
https://recklesscognition.files.wordpress.com/2008/09/front-fender-full.jpg
it appears it would work , but I cannot say for certain .

The top fork braze ons can be used with the Nitto Mark's rack and the 2
strut front rack also. I'd bet many rear racks with double struts could
work on the front also. Surly is coming out with 2 new highly adjustable
front racks in the usual black or silver next year that also can be
attached there .

[RBW] Re: basket bags

2015-10-31 Thread Julian
At under $30 and MUSA, that looks like a possible bargain. Curious about
quality, but pretty simple design, so if decent sewing and a good zipper,
not much to go wrong. Not waterproof, but then again, neither are the
Shopsacks (which I've used daily for years and love), which are water
"resistant", but if you're riding in a persistent rain or a short heavy
downpour they will let water in (I've learned to put anything that CAN'T
get wet into a plastic bag before stashing in the Shopsack on a rainy day).

I'll have to see if my LBS can get one of these -- if I do I'll report
back. Thanks Beth for the link.

[RBW] Re: Clementine tire size?

2015-10-31 Thread 'Mark in Beacon' via RBW Owners Bunch
They should definitely fit. I don't imagine Rivendell would be shipping the
bikes with tires that can't be fenderized, and you really need a minimum of
10-12mm for clearance. The Kendas at 1.75" are 48mm, and the fenders are
60mm. I could be wrong, but I imagine these bikes can take the one size
65mm SKS that Riv offers for all three wheel sizes.

[RBW] Re: Rohloff IGH Questions

2015-10-31 Thread BSWP
I continue to be drawn to a Rohloph IGH for a new bike. One aspect that
slows me down is getting the OEM2 torque arm fixed to the frame. I much
much much prefer a clean install over the unsightly long extension links
that I see, strapped to the left chainstay on many installs. And I have no
interest at all in those cast rear dropouts that have been promoted for the
hubs (like from Paragon) - they just ruin the clean lines of a frame, IMHO.
What I've seen, that looks like a great solution, is a bit of custom
fabrication in the rear triangle to give the OEM2 torque arm a fixing
point, as done here:

http://alexandchristine.smugmug.com/Bicycles/Framebuilding/Wetmorian11/i-T4DZ3pX

Has anyone else found a similar clean way to anchor the OEM2 arm?

So i just got through with an interaction with Soma folks over these fenders.
It went as well as you would expect. Apparently Free Range and the mechanic who
worked on mine both did it wrong and the installation is to blame not the
fenders. The example installation on their own blog post was also incorrect but
it didnt count because they didnt have a rack installed yet. "I guess its too
much to ask our customers to have commin sense" was in the discussion as well.
I pretty much hate my brand new Soma now and wish i could return the whole damn

[RBW] WTB: Nitto 25.4mm Moustache Bar

2015-10-31 Thread David Banzer
After getting a complete cockpit setup with these, I'm very happy and would now
like to get another set for an early 80s Trek.
So, another WTB...
Nitto Mustache Bar, prefer the 25.4mm clamp version as I have stem already.
Thanks,
David

[RBW] Re: 1985 trek 870 rivified and rebuilt

2015-10-31 Thread drew
Hey Michael, this was In the early stages of trek making mountain bikes, so the
800 series all had 26in wheels at that time. The clearances are insane. There
is still a ton of room to go bigger than the 2.25 that is in there now.

The color is anthracite from Olympic powder coating in Irvine. It's one of
their standard colors that they have on the wall, nothing fancy. I was hoping
to match the original metallic green, but didn't realize how much powdercoating
prices go up once you get a custom color.

2015-10-31 Thread 'Chris Lampe 2' via RBW Owners Bunch
Thanks for the color information and the information on clearances because
I was also wondering about that. I'm now looking for a 60cm 1985 850 or
870 frameset. I checked out the geometry at vintage-trek.com and I really
think I would like to build one up in the future.

If you haven't looked at the 1985 Trek catalog, you might be amazed at how
close you came to that year's 830 color!

I want to, but having just bought a Cheviot, I need to not spend another
$2k right now. I also know that I have to immediately replace the front
wheel -- no dynamo, no deal. And I don't need a triple. I'm basically never
going to use the big ring. So the $400 saved is gone.

 Yeah, I still want to.

[RBW] basket bags

2015-10-31 Thread Beth H
For those who can't spring for a basket bag from RBW,
A non-waterproof alternative exists at Wald, US makers of fine bicycle
basketry.

http://www.waldsports.com/index.cfm/store/bags-and-liners/1392-navy-blue-bag/

The downer is that they're not waterproof so probably better for Phoenix
than for Seattle. Still they fit baskets nicely.
Cheers and happy riding!

Wow, I read the blog post and stats on the Appaloosa and rendered it in
BikeCad and it just didn't do anything for me, at all. But I somehow
missed the proto-Appaloosa linked here and if the only major difference is
the fork and longer chainstays, then I'm liking this a lot. They would
have to eventually offer it as a frameset for me to even consider it,
though.

[RBW] Instructional videos on how to make your own ABS fender clips and saddle bag clips are posted on Facebook Rivendell Owners group page.

2015-10-31 Thread 'Clayton' via RBW Owners Bunch
I had several requests to make an instructional video on ABS quick release
fender clip making. I couldn't figure out how to splice them together into
one, so there are four posts. They cover my thinking on material selection,
strap width, heating the plastic and imagination. I needed a quick release
for the bottom of my Adam bag, so I made one on these videos. Exact same
technique is used in making fender clips. I hope your imaginations run
wild. What else is needed that can be made from ABS? Let me know what you
come up with. So far I have made: A 2" diameter kickstand pad, fender clip
quick releases, a camera case mount, the bag rack clip shown in these
videos, and molded internal frame bag skeletons. I have future, project
thoughts on bikepacking.
Global warming is a serious emergency. I bang the drum loudly. Bike
commuting is something to encourage. It should also be easier and these
projects should help.

[RBW] Re: Anyone order a Joe?

2015-10-31 Thread William R.
Hey Patrick, I'm in the same boat as you, I'm an 87 pbh and I ordered the 55. I
don't doubt my choice though. I don't think you can go wrong either way but
I've got my reason for going with the 55. In the not too distant past I was a
big frame guy. I went with two 60cm Sams. An orange canti brake version, and
later a blue, double tt, silver side pull version. Barely a fist of seat post
showing on those babies! And they rode like caddies! I could do things no hands
on those bikes that no sane person should do! I miss that orange Sam the most.
I still have and will keep my big 60cm VO Polyvalent. I'm not expecting the 55
Joe to behave drastically different than the 60 Sam's or the 58 Joe. Just
perhaps a little more nimble. I am sure that when I first get it I will ride it
everywhere but I'm really getting it to fill the mixed terrain/dirt road/trail
rider role. A few blug posts back was the 54cm Hunqapillar 1x11 that Mark
built. I thought that would have worked great for me too. Not too small. The
price tag would have been almost twice what this deal on the Joe is and I think
the 55 will do just fine in that role. If you are unsure of your choice just
give them a call. They will point out all of the pros and cons (if any) of
choosing one size or the other.

best,

-Bill

[RBW] Re: Anyone order a Joe?

2015-10-31 Thread comveo
Hey Patrick,

I'll chime in since I first had a 58cm Hunqapillar, then sized up to a 62.
I too am on the line between sizes. You're looking at a slightly smaller
jump from 55cm to 58cm with the Appaloosa. In my case the smaller size
required just too much post and stem protrusion to be practical for the
mostly upright riding I'm doing. Now, since the frame comes up to "meet me"
more on the larger bike, I feel like I have much more flexibility with bar
choice and height, minus maybe drop bars..haven't tried them, just
Bullmoose flat MTB and Albatross. With the Choco-Moose on the Joe, bigger
should not be a problem. And if you ride with normal shoes, you'll likely
have about an inch between the bike and your body(mid-top tube) with the
largest tires possible on the Joe. If you plan on having every bar choice
out there and don't mind a bit of post, stick with the 55cm, though for the
bars the bike comes with the larger may indeed feel more "horse"-like.I'm
glad I went bigger after being able to try both Hunqs. Food for thought and
I'd love to hear your feedback either way when yours arrives. Psyched on
this bike! : )

Hey Chris, how did you find out how many 55's were left? Is that posted
somewhere or did you talk to Riv? Just wondering because those would be
interesting numbers to know. I wonder if Riv would/could extend quantities to,
say 20 in certain sizes if 10 sold really fast. I also wonder what would happen
if they did not sell 10 in any sizes. How that would effect things.

[RBW] Re: Rohloff IGH Questions

2015-10-31 Thread Nick Payne

I retrofitted a Litespeed Blue Ridge with a Rohloff hub about 17 years ago
- I think my hub serial number is in the 2000s. It's never given me any
problems, and has been toured on extensively, including several trips in
Europe. It's definitely noisier in most gears than a well-adjusted
derailleur setup, and vibration can be felt in several gears as well, but I
don't think the efficiency is much different. When I started with it I used
the recommended 46t chainring and 16t cog, but before a two month tour in
Switzerland I swapped to a 38t chainring, which turned out to be a good

[RBW] Re: Anyone order a Joe?

2015-10-31 Thread R Michaels
Not sure what the 0003 is because I ordered (a 55) on the 28th and my
receipt has the same number. I,m plenty stoked as well as it will be my
first Rivendell. Looking forward to seeing the color and other specifics.

[RBW] Rohloff IGH Questions

2015-10-31 Thread Patrick Moore
Curious: Since modern derailleur drivetrains are so amazingly reliable -- I
can speak with certainty of 9 speeds and with some confidence about 10
speeds, and these both frictioned and indexed -- what is the value of
Rohloff if you are not doing a world tour?

I'm curious as an onlooker -- I have no desire to buy a Rohloff or, for
that matter, an 11-speed derailleur drivetrain -- about the pluses and
minuses in both columns.

Now, IGHs -- that's another matter. I can easily see myself getting 2 or 3
speed wheels to supplement the fixed wheels on my customs. But for more
than that, after researching and pondering the options, I just can't see
that IGHs trump derailleurs for the sort of riding most of us do, whether
on- or off-road. My (Chauncey! What's happening!)
God-willing-shortly-forthcoming "road bike for dirt" will have a 1X9 +
granny ring.

[RBW] Re: Anyone order a Joe?

2015-10-31 Thread Patrick D Kelly
I've jumped in. Ordered a 55. The thing that worries me is that my PBH is
87, right on the line between 55 and 58. Any thoughts on if I should try to
switch over to size 58? The sizes are so close it probably won't make any
real diff except for the single/double top tube (I lean more towards having
single TT, but having double wouldn't be horrible). It's not like the
difference between a medium clem and large clem. :) But I'm still worried
that the 58 would be the better size.

This will be my first rivbike. I've lusted after them for years, and
seriously contemplated both the hunqapillar and the sam hillborne. When the
Joe showed up, I recognized it as the one made for me. Even though I
shouldn't be buying another bike right now, I couldn't let it go by. I
promised myself I'd sell some other bike stuff ASAP.

I've been interested in the Joe since they posted those two prototypes. But, I'd rather build it up myself, and, bummer about the color! Why not that beautiful dark red like the proto? I'm really into the Joe, though. I've been dying to own a bike that can take 50s + fenders, and that has lots of eyelets, etc!On Saturday, October 31, 2015 at 4:29:20 PM UTC-4, Bill Lindsay wrote:Yep, I'm the opposite.  I'm usually willing to pay whatever things cost, and don't need another Rivendell, but those handlebars are the draw all on their own.  The fact that a kickass bike comes attached to those irresistible handlebars is gravy.  On Saturday, October 31, 2015 at 12:18:34 PM UTC-7, Daniel D. wrote:I'm always tempted by a deal and I've been eyeing a riv.  But not digging those handlebars. On Friday, October 30, 2015 at 3:42:09 PM UTC-7, Christopher Murray wrote:Looking over the Joe Appaloosa on the Blug and it looks like a great bike. At first I wasn't sure about the bars but warmed to them very quickly and
hope they will work out OK as I did order a 55. I don't think the 0003
number on the receipt has to do with who ordered in order because my
receipt also has the 0003 on it and I ordered on the 28th.
