Re: [RBW] Re: Well, it finally happened

2015-11-19 Thread Hugh Smitham
Hey Mark,

No expert here, but what I've read from folks who obsesse about ride
characteristics claim that 4" and above is where you gain the
performance/float in sand or snow. A 650b plus 3 or 3.25" or 26×3 is a
compromise at that end of the spectrum on those surfaces.

I'm in the process myself on a different beast so I've been thinking more
on what kind of rig is optimal for the bulk of riding I want to do.

Personally, I'd like a bike optimized for 650b+× 3.25 and if I hit a super
sandy patch I'll live with the reduced performance. This is where the
N+1really comes in.

[RBW] Re: Clem Smith fenders?

2015-11-19 Thread Edwin W
If you are thinking of getting the SKS fenders that Riv sells: On the little
Clem

I built up, I put p55s on there with Panaracer Pasela 26x1.75. I know it
will fit p65s, so I think I would suggest those, unless you are planning on
running relatively small tires, like mine, or smaller

As far as the mounting, I have a spacer (just a rubber plug I drilled a
hole in) in between the fender and the kickstand plate and another one in
between the fender and the seat stay bridge.

Cool. Personally, I only trust studded tires on ice. The MUPs that I use
get ruts through the snow/slush that freeze overnight, and those ruts will
yank your tire out from under you if you can't climb out of them.

I'm really impressed with the studded Dillinger 5 tires; they're barely any
slower than the stock Specialized GC tires (but WAY louder). Still, crazy
expensive. I was working part time at the LBS when I bought the fat bike
and tires, so the small discount was appreciated.

[RBW] FS: Brooks Leather Saddles (3) - all NEW

2015-11-19 Thread David Hallerman

Hi,

I have three totally new Brooks leather saddles for sale. I'm the
original owner of all three, but at this point, they might be surplus to
my requirements...might be. Note that "totally new" means never mounted,
never Proofided (is that a verb?), stored inside, in perfect condition,
in original boxes.

And both B.17s are the older, pre-Selle Italia models -- which in my
opinion have much nicer leather and last far longer than the current
stock of B.17s.

_/Info & Prices/_
Brooks B.17 Champion Special, titanium rails, antique brown = $212
Brooks B.17 Standard, steel rails, honey = $100
Brooks Swift, titanium rails, black (with saddle cover) = $230

Prices do not include shipping, although I'll pay for Priority Mail
shipping if you cover the PayPal fee and don't require the original
boxes. And let's talk about a discount if you buy two or more.

Some pix are linked below, more pix quickly available, and questions
readily answered.

Dave, who still has Brooks saddles on all of his bikes and that likely
won't change any time soon

Re: [RBW] Re: Well, it finally happened

2015-11-19 Thread Deacon Patrick
Tim,

My grocery run yesterday was on my 6 mo. old TB's and they did quite well.
I'd have to swap back to Smart Sams to see what a more lugged tire is like,
but I think some general differences are (both 2.1"):
-- TB's under-inflated grip well despite the smaller knobbies, having a
tendency to float more hold a line more easily.
-- SS's, under-inflated have better drive traction but the difference is
small enough to be negligible. Riding a few more pedal strokes up a hill is
not much advantage to the downfalls of swimmier steering (center ridge
issue?).

Conditions yesterday: Highly variable: 16+" of snow, medium wet, oddly
partially plowed in places by an ATV whose blade wasn't lowered; snow and
ice packed roads, high cross winds (50+ mph) with blowing snow, sunny
melted spots, slush, powdered slush (like granular playdough, the worst
stuff to ride in).

The only way I think things could have been improved (though I don't know
by how much) is a Moonlander fatbike. But I has a blast, spectacular
density of adventure per mile, and got to offer a 4x4 a tow (they passed).
Grin.

With abandon,
Patrick

[RBW] Re: Clem Smith fenders?

2015-11-19 Thread Zed Martinez
I'm with Edwin. I have P55s on mine with 48mm tires (not quite 2"). They
fit easily and look great, but I too could've fit the P65's and I'm getting
some splash out the side in stouter puddles since the tire fills so much of
the fender. If I was doing it again, I'd get the 65s. Just be sure and read
Riv's note about the one fender not being defective because it's got a
space cut out of it, that's just part of the fender at that size to fit the
frame.

Rather than rubber plugs at the kickstand plate I just used a longer bolt
with a few nuts on it to split the spacing difference between getting the
wheel out and maintaining my fender line. On the 52cm I had to bend the
mounting tab on the rear fender's positionable bracket to match the angle
of the seat stay bridge's boss. Didn't really have another troubles getting
them in there, massive fender clearance is one of the Clem's strengths
after all ;)

Re: [RBW] Re: Well, it finally happened

2015-11-19 Thread Mark Reimer
I'm not personally a fan of studded tires, but understand the appeal. I
ride on ice a lot. Pretty much every day for 4-5 months each year, as I
commute to work by riding on the frozen Red River. The city plows a nice
path down to the ice, which starts one block from my home and ends 3 blocks
from work. Score! In my personal experience, I find a file tread tire run
at a very low pressure provides great grip while also rolling nicely when
you hit the pavement. They also handle packed snow trails very well. On
smooth ice (like where the river has been prepared for ice skating) I don't
mind sliding around a bit here and there, helps keep my bike handling
skills in check. Usually the guys with studs end up bailing as often as I
do anyway. I've been running Challenge Grifo XS 32mm tires every winter
before I got the Rivendell (remember, I've only owned the Atlantis for one
winter!) and found I'd regularly fly past guys on fat bikes or studded
tires. Maybe they were just enjoying the view though :)

[RBW] A snowy Clem

2015-11-19 Thread David Sprunger
Here are a few shots of my Clem out in the snow. I'll take some better
pictures later, but I wanted to document how the first build turned out.

This is a 59 cm, blue frame. As others have testified, the ride is plush
and stable. I am a bit over 6'3" with short legs and a long torso, and the
fit is comfy.

One feature that really grabs my attention is the generous space at the
widest point between the tire and seat tube. On this setup, it measures
almost 13 cm. The distance really speaks to the long chain stays. By
contrast, that same space on my road custom is only 3 cm (and when we
discussed the design, Grant commented on the "stretched" chain stays). On
my '71 Cinelli and '73 Paramount the corresponding gap is about 3.5 cm. The
angle of the seat post and the tire profile must affect this measurement
too, but it's one I never really noticed before.

Anyway, here's a link to the pictures:

Re: [RBW] Single Speed Freewheel Removal

2015-11-19 Thread Patrick Moore
An aside, but related: when I wanted the 16 t fw removed from the back
wheel of my Dahon Hon Solo, having no remover myself I took it to a good
lbs -- Fat Tire. Mechanic said: "The only way to get it off is to destroy
it in a bench vise," which he proceeded to do. Mechanic claimed that such
cheap fws were not meant to be recyclable.

I had not particular desire to keep that fw, but was he right, or was he
full of a particular unpleasing substance?

Re: [RBW] Single Speed Freewheel Removal

2015-11-19 Thread tarik saleh
Cheap Dicta and even some cheap shimano's have come like that, I think
there is an indian sub manufacturer that makes the inadequate ones. There
are also non standard tiny prong 4 prong dicta freewheels, and even two
prongs. I think you can spin them on remover-side-in if you are not
paying attention as well.

Re: [RBW] Single Speed Freewheel Removal

2015-11-19 Thread Patrick Moore
No great loss in any case. It was rather interesting, nay thrilling!, to
see the mechanic remove it by squeezing it in a vise.

As for OEM Indian Roadster components, the habit in the countries where I
saw them used was that things like freewheels, not to mention chains,
chainrings, bb, hub, and headset bearing assemblies, saddles, rims, and
brake linkages were considered permanent infrastructure, like the frame.
(I'm being somewhat -- 33.225% -- facetious, but serious for the rest of
it.)

Re: [RBW] Re: Was a 55cm double top tube Hillborne ever made?

2015-11-19 Thread Patrick Moore
I had one of the earlier Sam Hills, with cantis. I forget if it was a 55 or
a 56, but it had only 1 tt, and I am pretty sure this model antedated the
2-top-tube fad.

Amirite?

Mine had a 59 cm tt, which was pretty darned long for a 55, though the
slacker (??71??) st angle took care of part of this length.

Patrick Moore, who sees absolutely no reason except "style" why a 55 to 60
cm all rounder-type frame needs 2 tts.

Sand is interesting though, and not something we have much of here. It's

I have dreams of riding the divide some year very soon, and I think that'd
be the perfect bike for it. I'm sure the Atlantis could do it, but might be
a little out of its element in the sticky mud and weight category.

Yep 3" seems like a sweet spot. I spoke with Mike Schiller and we figured
that a bike optimized for max 3.25 could also run 700×2" for more pavement
oriented touring and not affect bottom bracket height. Plus there are a
decent number of tire choices below 3" so that's the direction I'm headed.

Re: [RBW] Re: Forget your Sackvilles; the cool load carrier is a hacked Lands' End tote. Also, Kojaks versus Marathons.

2015-11-19 Thread Patrick Moore
Although, from my experience, Kojaks are B rather than A tires (note that,
per Schwalbe, the wire bead casing is identical to the folding bead casing;
not always the case, I understand), still, I was very struck at how much
better the Kojaks feel. I don't feel, as I did with the Marathons, that I
am pushing against a 15 mph wind, or riding up an incline, or riding with
brake blocks dragging. I'm not kidding; the difference is that great.

I felt a similar improvement when changing from some old Avocet Cross Ks to
the Kojaks, this on the '03: the Kojaks were far, far better feeling, again
judging by how hard it feels to maintain a given cadence in given
conditions in a given gear. But the switch to Kojaks from the M Racers
resulted in the feeling of an even greater improvement. Really, riding with
the Marathons, same tubes and sealant, felt so bad that it really made me
hesitate to ride the bike.

Now if I can only get these Kojaks converted to tubeless -- yes, they are
wire bead, but I've found few tires so hard to mount as these -- even the
first/inner bead required a tire jack, let along the second/outer.

[RBW] A snowy Clem

Fargo, ND?!? I graduated from NDSU in 2004. Met my husband there, as did my

of "the good life" in "God's Country."

Now, about you photos - there is a photo of the Clem build but no other images.
I'm sure you'll have them up in no time, and I'm waiting with bated breath over

Re: [RBW] Single Speed Freewheel Removal

2015-11-19 Thread Mark Reimer
I'd agree. I had two dicta freewheels. One of them I put on before a CX
race to test riding with a 16t freewheel. Within a few laps of hard and wet
racing it blew up. The second one I used in winter. It blew up in a couple
days. Then I bought a shimano. It's lasted two years so far but I can't use
it in the cold as the pawls stick and it spins both ways! The White
Industries freewheel I've had for 4 years now hasn't missed a beat once.
It's perfect.

Re: [RBW] Re: Well, it finally happened

2015-11-19 Thread Mark Reimer
I can see that. I'm no expert either, just going based on the bikes that
have come and gone from my circle of riding friends. A few years back there
were probably a dozen fat bikes showing up on our weekly winter rides. Now
there might be one. Everybody sold them. The general consensus was that
there is a very small margin of terrain where a fat bike really excels, the
kind of terrain and snow where no other bike can manage. Anything less and
they are just slow and overkill. Anything more and no bike at all can ride.
Sand is interesting though, and not something we have much of here. It's
possible we just don't have the best fat-bike friendly terrain here.

On snowy rides, most people I know find narrower tires are an advantage in,
as the tire cuts through to a hard surface. This is not true in deep
powdery snow of course. But if there is a trail or road down there
somewhere, and it's been snowing a lot, narrow tires can be pretty great
IMO.

For commuting, I definitely find that my experience dictates anything wider
than 32ish mm is not an advantage. On roads where there is snow piled up
here and there from poor/no plowing, wider tires just float up on top and
slide around, losing all control and traction.

Personally, I'd love something in the 3" wide platform for groomed/harder
packed snow trails, but more importantly for summer dirt and trail touring.
I have dreams of riding the divide some year very soon, and I think that'd
be the perfect bike for it. I'm sure the Atlantis could do it, but might be
a little out of its element in the sticky mud and weight category.

I woke up this morning to a fresh layer of the white stuff. November

the Compass Barlow Pass tires with fenders on my Atlantis, which were not
going to cut it on the fresh snow and ice. I scrambled to change to some
2.1 Thunder Burts and no fenders before work. These were brand new Thunder
Burts, as I've been using 2.25's all summer. I've rubbed the paint clean
off the frame and had the wheels grind to a halt a few times because of the
marginal clearance. The 2.1's have quite a lot of room all around and will
be a great trail riding tire I think.

Anyway, I rode in to work today. The first snow is always absurd. All
the drivers forget how to drive in snow, and being anywhere near a cyclist
causes absolute panic. Thankfully I made it in safely. It was even kinda
 fun... :)

Re: [RBW] Single Speed Freewheel Removal

2015-11-19 Thread George Schick
I had this experience once, too, back in the mid-90's. I had a Suntour,
Shimano, or some kind of FW (can't remember) stuck on an old Campy Record
hub so badly that I actually stripped the notches out of the FW trying to
get it loose with the removal tool. The LBS I took it to guaranteed that
they could get it off, but would destroy the FW in the process. I said go
for it and they did, and it did. Since then I've used higher quality
components AND lubed the hub threads with anti-seize compound and have had
no further problems.

[RBW] Dia-Compe ENE Bottle Cage Source? How Does VO Moderniste MKII Compare?

2015-11-19 Thread Jack K

*Hey Rivillians,Anyone know a source for the Dia-Compe ENE bottle cages
shown on Riv's website (but now out of stock)? Extensive Google'ing
discovered only U.K. based sources at (oddly) prohibitively high prices.
I'd rather pay the few dollars more for the ENE cages, but if none are
available, how do the VO Moderniste MKII cages compare? They're quite a bit
lighter than the ENE cages, which are already very light, so I wonder about
durability of the VO's. Yes, I know the King Iris cages are similar, but I
really prefer the more svelte design of the ENE's or
VO's.Cheers,-JackRaleigh, NC*

-175 Sugino cranks/grip king pedals/shimano un bottom bracket
-Paul neo-retro cantilevers

-Grey 2.25 Smart Sam tires(!...had to order these from Australia, don't know if
they ever made it to the U.S. Market)
-32 spoke Mavic/XT wheel set(higher miles than the rest of the bike, rear hub
is pretty crusty and will need to be repacked and/or replaced soon. Front is
still nice and both are straight and true. Originally had a dynamo wheelset
built for this bike but it's since gone to another project)

I think that's about it. second owner, bought as a frameset and had a good time
building it up. I thought it would be the bike that would keep me from wanting
any other bikes but I ended up riding it the least...it always felt too tall

offer. Located in sf but I can ship at actual cost + the cost of having a shop
box it up... give me a call or text if you're interested or have any
questions(don't always have access to a computer). Thanks!

Re: [RBW] Re: Well, it finally happened

2015-11-19 Thread Patrick Moore
FWIW, I've found that even 60 mm tires, if you can run them quite soft --
sub 20 psi at least in front (I've run them as low as 12/16 without
problem; tubes; Big Apples, so, while supple, not the very thinnest of
sidewalls) -- I've found that these do considerably better in sand up to
about 3" deep than the typical 1.95 at 50 psi. Even better, IME, though
some deny this, is that a wheel that is 3" or so bigger in diameter, ie
29", rolls through sand even better. I do quite well with my 700C 50mm/1.95
Furious Freds in such sand, even if at slightly higher pressures because of
the very thin sidewalls. The 700C Big Apples I used for a while, at 65 mm
actual, were even better.

That said, if all my riding were in such sand (no more than 60% of my local
dirt riding is really dirt, and of that, no more than 30% is sand over 1"
deep) I'd be very interested in 650C "plus." BSNYC has been riding such a
bike and apparently likes it.

Anyone out there know of a "BMX" freewheel removal tool that will work

on the drive side must first be removed, which is not only an extra PITA,
but then the removal tool has to sit against the notches on the freewheel
without benefit of the QR skewer to hold it in place, risking the stripping
of the FW notches in the process.

[RBW] Re: Clem Smith fenders?

2015-11-19 Thread 'Mark in Beacon' via RBW Owners Bunch
I am going to try these new fenders (just came out this week) from Planet
Bike:

https://ecom1.planetbike.com/7054-8.html

I was looking for something specific to 650B for optimum fender line. I
have a pair of the older B65 (with the cutout) that have served me well on
an old Mt. bike, but are getting a bit dodgy anyway. I will probably give
them a spray for a fun project later this winter.

I found out about the new Cascadias (these are the PB aluminum series, not
the polycarbonate plastic) on the 650 forum, and the company sales director
was kind enough to email me when they became available. I hope they will
look nice and function well on my 52cm black Clementine!

What size wheels does your Clem have?

P65 fenders are for fat 26" tires.
If you have larger, fat tires, and want wider than the P55, the B65
 is the correct size.

new rear hub, well, I'm thinking I might like to go 11 speed. I mean
11 is down to the 105 level now and will probably be at the Tiagra
level sometime this year or next year. So, it's getting down to the
point that it's not really much more expensive than similar quality
parts as in a 9 or 10 speed setup. Why 11 in particular? Well, read
on.

I'm really liking running a wide-low double on my Custom but I'm
thinking that I would like to jam a couple of more gears in to get
more ratios in the 13-18 mph range that I ride most often in. I run
11-34 9 speed right now, with 44/28 in the front. Some of the gaps
between gears are just wider than I would like. More gears in the
cassette would seem to solve this.

Of course, one might argue that, a better solution would be to just
run a triple with a narrower cassette and you get all the benefits of
more gears in the range that you ride in. However, for whatever
reason, triples on my custom have never really shifted well. Either
the granny, or the big ring, or both, overshift or undershift and it's
just never quite right. It seems much happier with the wide-low
double, never gives me any trouble at all. So I'd like to keep a wide
low double, because this is the frame I want to keep riding most of
the time. Although I would like to go a bit wider between the big
ring and the little ring, I really use it like a 1x9 with a bailout
gear anyway. So I was thinking maybe 46/26 up front and 12-32 in the
back.

And not just any 12-32. I'm looking for
12-13-14-15-16-18-20-22-25-28-32. This yields the following ratios in
the big ring per Sheldon: 99.7 - 92.0 - 85.4 - 79.7 - 74.8 - 66.4 -
59.8 - 54.4 - 47.8 - 42.7 - 37.4. 13-32 or 13-34 might be even
better, of course, nobody will ever make that.

Another solution might just be to pedal harder and forget about any of this.

Or, just switch my main bike to the Redwood, it seems to shift the
triple just fine,and I currently have an 11-28 9 speed with a 46-36-24
Rivendell issue Sugino triple. But I don't have fenders on the
Redwood and I kind of like it that way as a sunny day bike and with
700C Barlow Pass, it's a nice change of pace the way it is. I could
go 650B and fenders as on the Custom but it feels so natural and
nimble the way it is so I sort of want to keep it that way.

So back to the 11 on the custom. Even Rivendell themselves built a
1x11 prototype recently, didn't they?

well anyway just musing.

[RBW] Re: Clem Smith fenders?

2015-11-19 Thread 'Mark in Beacon' via RBW Owners Bunch
Yeah, the silver SKS works with some bike colors--I have an older set that
look good on a dark green bike--but they don't go with everything, and I
imagine they would look cheapish on a black Clementine. As for the
pinstriping, my 45s are at least 6 or 7 years old, and my 65s are around
that timeframe too, and both have the pinstripes. I don't think that is a
terribly new feature. At least some of the lines are reflective, so it
serves a safety purpose.

Nice find Joe. That IRD 11-speed 12-32 only misses the 16t (and actually
none of their 11sp cassettes have a 16). What Jim gains by losing the 16

[RBW] Clem Smith fenders?

2015-11-19 Thread Tim Wood
I'm having fender dilemmas, mainly because I'm picky when it comes to fender
appearance. The first set I tried was the B65 in silver (my Clem is 700c), and
while they fit well over the stock 29x2.0, they looked awful, and huge. Maybe
the long stays expose the rear tire more but the fenders seemed to dominate the
appearance. Also, the new SKS's have pin stripping down the centre and I just
wasn't digging it, it could have also been the silver wasn't playing well with
the grey paint. For some reason I then tried the silver p55's, and while they
are marketed as a 26" fender, riv recommends them for 29" up to a 2.0. They
were barely wide enough to cover the tread and being a 26, longboard or not,
they were just too short. And again, the pinstriping. I was willing to settle
on the p55 as I have plans to try out the new soma 42c gumwall and thought it
was a good fit, but they just weren't looking right. Both of those sets are
going back and I'm going to try some black planet bike cascadia 29ers. Hoping
they look decent and are full coverage. Sigh.

2015-11-19 Thread Lungimsam
The canti-bility makes it interesting to me as I will only buy a cantibrake
bike for me next bike if I have a say about it.

But the first pic I saw makes the st look short. Are these intended to be
shortie seat tube bikes or is it just the pic making it look that way?

David,
I have a little storage pod that fits in a water bottle cage. I use it to

Re: [RBW] Re: Was a 55cm double top tube Hillborne ever made?

2015-11-19 Thread James Warren

That's correct. One little detail: when they were single-color orange and some
came with cantis and some came with sidepulls in 2010, the 2TT started to
appear on the 60's but not yet the 56's. I remember because when I bought mine
at the end of that year, my thinking was, "ooh, I can still get a 1TT 60 even
though the 2TT is on the grow." Sometime after that, a new batch came along
where both the 56's and 60's were 2TT, and that's when it became clear that Riv
was serious about these 2TT's!. (And of course, 64's were always 2TT.)

The Web Special one right now is sweet, because it's orange but with cream
headtube. That's a bit rare. (But Manny has one!) At $1150, I'm surprised that
hasn't sold yet. Deal!

[RBW] FS: 650b Tires - Paselas, Big Bens, Vee Rubber Speedsters

2015-11-19 Thread David Banzer
Came to the conclusion on my commute this morning that Clem can fill my
larger tire needs and I should turn my Redwood back into the 700c wheeled
bike it was intended to be and not get by with 1mm clearance at the
chainstays with large 650b tires. On the plus side, my wife's 650b mixte
conversion will now get a nice wheelset.
So selling off the 650b tires that I don't need.
Prices do not include shipping on these - Paselas and Big Bens are wire
beads so local pickup encouraged on those, but can ship folded in thirds.

Panaracer Paselas - 42mm, PT version, wire beads, tan sidewalls, used very
lightly - $45 for the pair
Schwalbe Big Bens - 650bx50, I believe these measure out to 48mm actual -
these ones from Riv: http://www.rivbike.com/product-p/tben-10122.htm - new,
never mounted - $35 for the pair
Vee Rubber Speedsters - 47mm actual width on A23 rims - used, lots of tread
on these, nice gravel tires, roll decent on pavement but really shine
offroad - $55 for the pair

Contact me offlist if you can.
Paypal Personal payment preferred for these tires.
I can add any items from my webstore as well: treetop.bigcartel.com - can
work out a shipping deal if you'd like anything from there.
Thanks,
David

[RBW] Well, it finally happened

2015-11-19 Thread Mark Reimer
I woke up this morning to a fresh layer of the white stuff. November 19th
is really late for snow here, so it's not very surprising. I still had the
Compass Barlow Pass tires with fenders on my Atlantis, which were not going
to cut it on the fresh snow and ice. I scrambled to change to some 2.1
Thunder Burts and no fenders before work.

All the
drivers forget how to drive in snow, and being anywhere near a cyclist
causes absolute panic. Thankfully I made it in safely. It was even kinda
fun... :)

Re: [RBW] Re: Well, it finally happened

2015-11-19 Thread Mark Reimer
I've been working on selling some road bike stuff to fund the purchase of a
Crust Evasion frame - it's a new company a friend of mine has just
launched. It's built around a 26" x 3" tire. There is a second model coming
out in January that fits a full 4" fat tire, or 27.5x3", or standard 29er.
I'm pretty keen on the mid-fat 26" though. I'm hoping to have it arranged
by January or so!

Re: [RBW] Re: Well, it finally happened

2015-11-19 Thread Tim Gavin
Mark - Nice ride! How were the Thunder Burts in the snow? I will set up
my KOM (rigid 26er) with 2.1" TBs (the frame is at the powder coater now).

Hugh - I commuted last year on a fat bike with 26 x 4.25" studded tires; it
was a great success. Here in Iowa, we're forecasted to get our first snow
tomorrow afternoon. I'm going to ride the fat bike in and hope for an inch
of fresh powder (and thankfully, a tailwind) for the ride home

Re: [RBW] Re: Well, it finally happened

2015-11-19 Thread Mark Reimer
So far so good! Last year I had WTB Nano 2.1's all winter and I love them.
But the TB's have been soo nice all summer, so I anticipate good
things. Nice aggressive side knobs for fast trails, but light and fast
rolling with a smooth center tread for when I'm on exposed pavement and ice
