There's a story here. How many could have landed in San Francisco? If
someone's serious they should be able to track down its history. Serial number
off the BB shell, call Rivendell. If you like yellow, looks like a nice bike

[RBW] FS: TA zephyr triple crankset for sale,w/ Phil wood bb and TA chainrings

2015-12-07 Thread mike gasparino
TA zephyr crankset 110/74 BCD and also had a set of 58 BCD holes.
177.5mm crankarm length
Cosmetic condition is great. They are used but still beautiful!
All tapers and threads are perfect, except for the pedal threads on the
non-driveside crank. When pedals were first installed, the nondriveside pedal
got cross threaded initially and so the first few threads of the crank are
damaged. However, there are still more than enough threads remaining, and the
pedal will tighten up on the arm, so there is no real functional impact. Of
course, a repair could be effected by inserting a helicoil, if necessary, but I
think you will find that the crank will function perfectly as is.
Phil Wood BB JIS taper in the proper 125mm length, with the drive side offset
+2.5mm, as is recommended for these cranks. Crank bolts and cups included.bb in
great shape!
TA zephyr 48/36 outer and middle chainrings. Decent shape. Still have plenty of
life left.
Sugino 26 inner chainring. Basically new.

Truly a fantastic set up I had on my Atlantis with a 9 speed drivetrain. $400
shipped for the lot. Email for pictures. magaspa...@gmail.com

[RBW] Re: Bombadil Tire Clearance

2015-12-07 Thread iamkeith
I can't speak from direct experience related to the Bombadil, but maybe
this helps.

>From what I understand, the bike actually preceded the tires - though not
by a long timeframe. Kirk Pacenti designed the neo moto, and then the
quasi moto, directly in *response* to the Bombadil and some persuasive
conversations he'd had with Grant. So if you have a REALLY early model, I
could understand how the clearance be minimal. Since it was originally
conceived as a bike "in the spirit of a 1985 mountain bike," and since
mountain bike tires were only 1.75" wide back then, it probably made sense.
I know that later frames have increased in terms of their available
clearance. There are other images circulating of what is described as a
test model, fitted with neo motos (which you've probably seen), and it does
seem to have more clearance than yours - though its hard to tell for sure.
Perhaps this was a first revision - before they did the batch of
clearcoat frames?

https://www.flickr.com/photos/gzahnd/2417452065/in/photostream/

The other theory I had doesn't seem to apply to your frame: Just like your
bike, the seat-stay bridge is also the point of least clearance on my
All-Rounder. But on mine, the builder used one that was drilled for
caliper brake mounting, even though the bike uses canti brakes. In my
case, I've assumed that it was (consciously or unconsciously) located where
needed to provide the option of switching the brake-types, based on
longest-reach brakes available at the time. But, unless I'm seeing it
wrong, yours doesn't look like it is meant for that.

Even though it's tight, I personally would have no issues using it with the
clearance you're showing. I'd just avoid gumbo mud, which I try to do
anyway. If you're interested, I can post a picture of the modification I
recently made to my fender, to allow it to clear the stay and still let me
run an oversize tire.

Re: [RBW] Re: Anyone order a Joe?

2015-12-07 Thread William R.
Hi Andrew. Short answer is no. The only thing close to the final Joe Apploosa
that we will get in Feb/March is the 55cm Proto Appaloosa that was featured in
the Blug announcement. And that frames geo doesn't really correspond to the
final geo provided. If I were close enough to Riv HQ I think you could go test
a Cheviot for long chain stay feel and a Sam for size and they would give you a
pretty good idea.

Re: [RBW] Early Christmas - Heron Touring

2015-12-07 Thread Michael Hechmer
I couldn't agree more. A canti Hilsen, or perhaps more exactly, a
prototype Saluki. I have never quite understood why GP has moved away from
canti brake designs. My experience has been that good brakes set up & work
better than budget brakes, no matter the style; but for wide tires on a
road bike good cantis give the best fender and tire clearance, and good
cantis have great stopping power.

[RBW] Re: Bombadil Tire Clearance

2015-12-07 Thread Garth

I would never say that any Riv frames are designed around X tires ,
that's simply limiting. The clearances are like a balance between chainring
sizes and the bend of the stays, chainstay length and the intention of
designer. Meaning, it's all art !

Even with a frame design , each one is unique to that particular builder
so there will always be slight variances of some kind. So your frames
clearances simply are what they are. Rivendell may design the frames and
even furnish some lugs, but to have them built they are like a contractor
of sorts in relationship with builders around the world, not unlike other
companies.

In regards to what iamkeith said about the early mtb's , they did come
with 1.95" tires even in 1982 . My 1983 Stumpjumper Sport came with the
original "Stumpumper" tires that I believe were 1.95" and when I wore them
out I replaced them with Crossroads 1.95" . I used a max tire of 2.05 on
it, a Vittoria Free Climb. The rims were the by todays standards "quite
wide" Araya 7x which I believe were 32+mm's so the tires mounted fairly
true to size. No problems with clearance . I suspect the 26x1.75 written on
the Araya may have been a source of confusion as this referred to the
smallest recommended tire , though I ran Tricross 1.5's on and off no
problemo.

Those Stumpjumper frames were brilliant in the design of the chainstays and
clearance and could have easily been reconfigured today to use wider tires
and still have clearance for even "low q" triple cranks like the Sugino AT
and TA Cyclotourist whihch came on the Sport($495 model) and
Stumpjumper($750). Our early Bombadils could have used a design like that
! I always considered the Bomba the fit and ride I always wished the
Stumpjumpers had because they were quite bad in that way.

Re: [RBW] Re: Riv 12-40 cassette

2015-12-07 Thread Jim Bronson
I dunno about that. Maybe it's not possible to overthink gearing, but it's
possible to spend too much time thinking about the gearing on your bike
when one should be thinking about more pressing things, like work, family
member's cancer treatment, pregnant wife, house maintenance, volunteer
obligations, etc, etc...

It's a guilty pleasure to obsess over your bicycle configuration, one that
I partake of quite frequently...

Oh well :)

Re: [RBW] Texas Rivendell Riders

2015-12-07 Thread Jim Bronson
Rivendell bicycling pub crawl anyone? I've done a riding pub crawl with
the Frankenbike folks before but it would be cool to have an all-Rivendell
crawl.

I think the most recent one I did started at Draught Horse on Medical
Parkway, then to Little Woodrow's on W.6th and then lastly to Doc's
Motorworks on South Congress. A subset of folks then went on to Trudy's on
30th and then lastly to a house party on North Loop. Think I rolled home
around 5am. LOL

[RBW] Re: Riv 12-40 cassette

2015-12-07 Thread Garth

This is an IRD cassette, nothing to do with Riv other than they are a
retailer. The odd cog choices apears to be an IRD chacterstic in both
cassettes and FW's. They seem to be in love with 17-21-24 jumps when
17-20-24 is to me at least, perfect. Also 15-18-21-24 on 6 sp. FW when
15-17-20-24 is perfect.

Gear charts are great, I like Mikey's as it's customizable , it has some
presets but you can modify any cog choice or just manually type in the cogs
. http://home.earthlink.net/~mike.sherman/shift.html

17-21 jumps are quite large , regardless .

Thought has no beginning and no end .

Re: [RBW] Early Christmas - Heron Touring

2015-12-07 Thread William deRosset
Dear Michael,

The Heron Touring bikes were almost all 700C machines (the 53 cm was the
exception), with 8/5 OS top tube and 9/6 OS downtubes (they were definitely
O/S and I believe those are the gauges of my 1998-produced model), round
fork blades (super-comfy, too), clearance for 35-622 fenders, and long-ish
chainstays. It was a wonderfully comfortable American-style touring machine
It was a smooth and stable ride year-round with a saddlebag load and big
Paselas or fat (for the era) cyclocross tires. That machine hated, hated,
HATED a handlebar bag front load. It shimmied and would dive for the ditch
without a firm hand when front loaded, even at lower speeds. It also had
horizontal dropouts and the bridges were placed to maximize "clearance" not
provide optimal fenderlines. It was exceptionally well-behaved otherwise,
though it was pretty amazing/disconcerting to watch the longitudinal fork
displacement under hard braking. All part of the charm of this kind of
bike.

However, it was the best trailer-towing bike I've owned, and my brother
(the bike is somewhere between "on permanent loan" and "his", leaning
toward the latter) still hauls his youngest around the hills of Burlington,
VT with my 55cm. It is sparkly green, equipped pretty much like this one
,
though with a SON hub, B+M halogen headlamp, and (fairly marginal)
Dia-Compe 960s. I should put a set of CR 720's on the front the next time I
visit, or at least swap the pads.

It remains one of my favorite bikes, actually, though not a fire-breather
from a climbing performance perspective.

[RBW] Clem and Clementine framesets available now

2015-12-07 Thread Bill Lindsay
The BLUG announced that Riv was holding back a few Clem and Clementine
framesets just in case somebody's got damaged. Now you can buy one. The
Clem in every size, including Medium! The Clementine in Large and Small,
but no Medium. No more excuses, until these get sold, of course.

[RBW] Re: So darn close...

2015-12-07 Thread Zach Duval
Thanks, Phillip. I currently run VO aluminum fenders, which I probably don'the
want to try sawing in half. I'very got a few options (including your
Riv-inspired SKS hack) to mull over. For now, I've got the Knard on the rear
and a ColdVie up front, which may suffice through this winter. Fender-tire
clearance with the Knard isn't as good as I'd hope, but it should be fine for
around town.

I'm leaning towards a single Paul Racer to aid clearance in the front in order
to get the other Knard under thar fender (like the post title says, even with a
Tektro it'seems so darn close). Then eventually springing for the rear to
balance the bike out. I've also got an old Schwinn PDG 50 I've been meaning to
adapt over as a winter commuter, so that may take investment priority. As it
is, oddly enough, even in NW Montana this year, we've not had much snow --
rain's coming down now! -- so I may have time to fine tune that latter option
and keep the Hillborne for fairer weather.

Wouldn't OS 8/5 and 9/6 be very stiff? A TT OS 8/5 is stiffer (less
deflection with a center load) than 1" TT of 10/7 and a DT OS 9/6 is
stiffer than a 1-1/8" 11/8. These STD size tubes are pretty stiff.

Re: [RBW] Early Christmas - Heron Touring

2015-12-07 Thread William deRosset
>Wouldn't OS 8/5 and 9/6 be very stiff?

Dear John,

For a 55cm frame (really a 57-58 once the top tube slope and extended head
tube is accounted for)? Yep. Sure is.

However it is consistent with the consensus good practice for dedicated
offroad machines--and (rear-loading) touring bikes. It is still a lighter
spec than almost all the Surly offerings or a Miyata 1200, and as light as
most of Rivendell's offerings. Only the Legolas had a lighter tube spec,
and their recent take on a "road" bike, the Roadeo, has an OS 8/5 top tube
and OS 9/6 downtube. I had a ball on my Heron, though it doesn't climb for
me as well as some other machines. It is still smooth, comfortable, and
well-behaved when used within its design limitations.

Best,

Will

"What's strange

I don't think I've ever come across that. "

I agree that it's strange, but I have come across it. I just obtained a
totally stock 1985 Schwinn. The 1985 Catalog says it comes stock with a
6-speed Shimano freewheel with the following cogs:

14-15-17-21-24-26

That's right, jumps as-you-go of : 1 - 2 - 4 - 3 - 2

I think that qualifies as bizarre, by my contemporary standards. The bike
arrived Friday, and is in fact bone-stock (including tires). I counted the
freewheel cogs and they are exactly as specified in the catalog. No, I'm
not going to use it. I replaced it with a period 6-speed Shimano 600
freewheel that I built with cogs:

13-15-17-19-22-25

Re: [RBW] Re: Velocity Dyad/Aerohead vs Atlas

2015-12-07 Thread Chris Chen
Same here. Dyad/Aeroheat on three bikes (I swear I didn't intend this):

700x35 for road
650bx42 for road gravel
650bx54 for rough stuff

And I load 'em up up. I weigh ~145 and put a fair amount on the front and
back; 36 hole.

The Atlas is pretty rim and I think it's a tiny bit wider which might be
nice, but don't ding the Dyad for any perceived strength deficiencies,
'cause where aren't any.

Another take away is what tires and pressures you plan to run; The tire
takes a lot of the brunt of the weight, and with a high enough final
tension on your spokes, you should be great!

I doubt I've even come close to putting my wheels to any kind of test. The
closest I've come was a high speed jump off a curb (operator errorI
wouldn't willingly do that) and the only negative from that might have been
a spoke that became a little loose, although the wheel remained true.

Dear John,

For a 55cm frame (really a 57-58 once the top tube slope and extended
head tube is accounted for)? Yep. Sure is.

However it is consistent with the consensus good practice for
dedicated offroad machines--and (rear-loading) touring bikes.

and probably helps explain why you found yours so good for trailer towing

It is still a lighter spec than almost all the Surly offerings or a
Miyata 1200, and as light as most of Rivendell's offerings. Only the
Legolas had a lighter tube spec, and their recent take on a "road"
bike, the Roadeo, has an OS 8/5 top tube and OS 9/6 downtube. I had a
ball on my Heron, though it doesn't climb for me as well as some other
machines. It is still smooth, comfortable, and well-behaved when used
within its design limitations.

[RBW] Re: Bombadil Tire Clearance

2015-12-07 Thread ted
Chad,

I have a first generation 52 Bombadil, and currently have Quasi-Motos
mounted on Synergy rims on it.
I think they fit fine at the pressures I usually run in them (20-25psi). If
I recall correctly, when I first mounted them I seriously over inflated and
the resulting clearance was minimal to inadequate. I don't think I would
buy 2.1 MTB tires for it, though before I bought mine I rode a demo at RBW
WHQ that had (I think) a Quasi on the back and a Fire Cross (bigger knobs
so fatter) on the front.
As others have noted the later Bombadils (diaga tube/stays and different
crown) have more clearance. I don't know if some of the later parallel top
tube versions had more clearance than the earliest ones or not. I fear if
you want to use most current 27.5 MTB tires the early Bombadil may not work
to work.

[RBW] Re: Bombadil Tire Clearance

2015-12-07 Thread Leslie
That pic was what led to me wanting a Bombadil, but, it was later on that I
got one, ended up w/ the diagastay one instead (but that's another story).

For the clearance aspect: at the time, there really weren't a lot of 650b
tires... the Quasi came out while the bike was being prototyped...

The clearance you're showing on yours, is a bit more than I'm running on my

[RBW] Re: Bombadil Tire Clearance

2015-12-07 Thread Bill Lindsay
I remember my rear chainstay bridge having some headroom over the Quasi
Moto. I don't have any great photos of it, and I don't own the frame
anymore. This is the best I have, but you have to use your imagination.
Mine was bought from Riv-stock in Spring of 2010.

[RBW] Re: New Winter Project: Another 650B conversion, thanks in part to you

2015-12-07 Thread Bill Lindsay
Maybe I'm getting too good at 650B conversions, or maybe I have too many
parts on-hand to make things go so smoothly. Whatever the reason, I've got
my 1985 Schwinn Tempo all ready to ride in its new 650B configuration. I
pulled the stock wheelset and replaced it with a Pacenti PL23 wheelset.
White Industries front hub and vintage Suntour Cyclone rear hub. Shimano
600 6-speed freewheel 13-25, and very used Soma New Express 650x37B tires.
Tektro bigmouth brakes. Stock seatpost, NOS vetta saddle. Cockpit
replaced with Nitto Pearl 11 stem. Noodle 44cm bars, and SRAM S500
levers. Ritchey/Sugino 44/30 crankset. Stock Shimano "Z" shifters and
derailers. It's already set up with Front and Rear Sheldon Nuts, so fender
install should be super quick. I picked this Tempo partially because it
has fender eyelets.

Have a look if you like:

Weird, it looks like they split the gearing into two stages. Like you'll use
the smaller jumps on the small cogs for flats, then leap to the other set of
small-jumps for climbing. Assuming that convoluted description makes sense to
anybody, I wonder if it makes any sense on the road.
