Re: [RBW] Re: Latest Blug, MUSA clothing, and Crapmanship

2016-02-06 Thread Patrick Moore
I must keep an eye on those "Adventure Pants." I also have to keep a rein
on my spending, but the Alitta pants I got at GW t'other day made me think
that perhaps I'd like something a bit heavier than the Rock Bros. Alas, the
Alittas are L, and, after riding in them yesterday and finding it hard
despite the velcro shin strap to keep the right leg off the chain, they'll
go to my bigger little brother, and just perhaps I'll get the REIs or
perhaps the Alittas in Med.

I owned a pair of MUSA knickers and the original pants. I can put up with
no zip fly, but I found the waist cut far too low -- uncomfortable when I
ride on the hoods. But I did like the look - trim but not tight -- and the
fabric weight was just right.

O my, another choice!

David: how do these Royce Peak pants feel when you are bending over in the
hooks? Do they give you that awful "there's a draft back there" feeling?

One nice thing about the Alittas is that they have an elasticized waist,
but also belt loops.

2016-02-06 Thread Patrick Moore
It's just right from about 45*F down to 30*F if it's not windy, over a Wabi
Woolens LS jersey. The high button neck keeps me from getting sore throats;
with other garments I use a scarf. I recently bought my first real cycling
jacket in years, of midweight fabrick, high collar, etc, but tho' this is
nice in wind, I find that, even below freezing and layered over just one
jersey, I start to sweat after a few miles. The tweed jersey is warm but
breathes and, like other wool, adapts to a far greater range of temps.

I scored the tweed, 4 ss wool jerseys including a very appealing Cycles
Wolfe Bienne retro copy with both rear and *front *pockets and a retro
Raleigh jersey, a pair of wool cycling shorts, and a (too small, alas) pair
of Euro wool cycling tights, for $120 or so from John Stamstadt who was
selling the bunch several years ago.

Looks like the content is gone here. Got my chocos today. To my measurements,
they are swept back about 2-3cm further than albatross bars. unmounted, they
seem very long, but I guess you get a lot more useable grip area that way. I
never found the curves of albatross' to be useable. The curves of these seem
more comfortably positioned. As grant described, the rise/drop is negligable,
though I think I'll try them in the downward position. Interested to see how
the length works with bar end shifters.

While I wasn't totally satisfied with the musa knickers I had briefly,
they did convince me that nylon is good for riding pants. For me, I
like REI's "adventure pants"

I have 2 pairs which I alternate almost continuously.

They're a good weight of nylon, maybe not as thick as musa, and well
designed. Actually, REI changes specs sometimes (from year to year, I
think), so some years the weight is not right. When I found that this
years batch was good, I bought my current 2 pairs. (I've "outgrown" my
other pair.) Pretty easy to roll up the cuffs to create that knicker
effect. Grin.

I love the MUSA shorts and pants! I understand the business decision, but I

Also in this latest post, Grant reiterated his devotion to his 60cm Cheviot. I
had read his praise for this model before and, partly based on that, I ordered
a green 60cm Cheviot frame. (Orange may be faster, but Grant rides a green! :)

bikes(s) it replaces from my now too large collection.

[RBW] Latest Blug, MUSA clothing, and Crapmanship

2016-02-06 Thread Patrick Moore
New entry yesterday says that MUSA items will be cut back because they are
cash flow killers. I have mixed feelings; on the one hand, I can find
cycling clothing that, if not better overall, is certainly better for my
uses, in many other places (eg, instead of MUSA pants, which I've owned,
the Alitta pants I got (at GW, but they are available on sale online for
$49) fit and feel better and *have a gdamn zip fly!!!*

But I love my woolywarm ragg "overjersey" -- like a heavy sweater in
cyclists' jersey cut -- and the Rivendell ls "regular" jerseys were very
nice; in fact, I had one that was too long and too wide. I tried to shrink
it a bit, finally washing it on "hot" and drying it on "cottons" -- no
luck, it didn't shrink a bit. I gave it to my (larger) brother.

But Crapmanship! What a nice notion! It reminds me of the gear I made in
high school from very primitive materials: push gocart of which the wheels
were sections I sawed by hand from logs, with tires strips of large tin can
nailed to the wood. The knife I made from an old bolt by heating it red and
hammering it flat, then shaping it with a file. The "brass" repousse work
made from other tin cans with brass colored interior, cut into strips,
hammered, and nailed to the firecracker guns I made: one musket and one
pistol. I'm very glad we had no internet back then; hell, we didn't even
have TV where we lived.

2016-02-06 Thread Matthew J
The MUSA pants are great for touring and camping. Choose a base layer
depending on the weather, and pull the always comfortable MUSA over. Bonus
that that pack so small and light you can sneak luxuries into the pannier /
back pack you may otherwise leave home.

Probably were too well made for Riv's bottom line. I've had mine for more
than 6 years now. Only noticed Riv had dropped them after a campfire*
mishap burnt a hole in one of my two pair.

Taylor Stitch will be coming out with some pants later this month that
sound similar to MUSA. According to the blurb these will also be made in
the Bay Area. Possibly by the same company that made MUSA? I've got a
pair on pre-order and my fingers crossed.

*When I camp alone I do not have camp fires. Last September my nephew
joined my brother and me on a trip to Glacier. He complained about his
knees when we hiked, watched movies on his iPhone on a perfectly clear
night instead of walking down to Bowman Lake beach to star gaze, and
insisted on building campfires one of which damaged my MUSA pants. Kids
these days!

[RBW] Headlight Charging Games

2016-02-06 Thread Doug Williams

I have two Busch & Müller Ixon Core battery powered lights that I got from
Peter White. Yes, I love them. Great beam pattern, doesn’t blind anyone,
and running two is plenty of light. One of the reasons that I got them is
that I read somewhere (can’t find where now) that you can charge the light
and run the light at the same time. Indeed, this works! I have a USB
battery bank in my front bag plugged into the lights. I can leave the light
on and charge it at the same time. I have successfully used this on several
long rides where the lights otherwise would have run out. I have run them
for over 10 hours on high power and the lights stayed on the whole time. My
Zendure battery pack was only ¼ down in power, so I suppose I could run
them continuously on high power this way for 40 hours??? I haven’t tried
because that seems silly, but maybe I’ll have to do it…For Science!

The Ixon Core lights are mounted on my Mark’s rack and plugged into the
Zendure battery pack in my Sackville TrunkSack Small. I just leave them
like that always. I even rigged rain proof booties made from a cut up inner
tube for the Ixon’s so that the charging port can’t get wet in the rain
(even with the USB plug inserted into the light).

I plug the battery pack into a USB wall charger when I get home. The
Zendure has a “charge through” capability so the battery pack charges
itself and the lights at the same time. In the morning, I’m ready for
another day of riding. I just leave the lights on continuously during my
rides day or night because…well…because I can and why not have daytime
running lights? I can also use the battery pack to charge my phone and use
it for navigation (which otherwise runs down the phone battery rather
quickly).

The Ixon Core lights are plenty good for 95% of my riding, but I would like
to have a more powerful light mounted on my handlebars for use as a high
beam when I’m riding through the woods at night. The Ixon Core’s are a
little dicey by themselves in that situation, especially on a fast descent.

Anyway, I was told that this “light up and charge at the same time trick”
will NOT work for many other lights. Specifically, I was told that the
Light & Motion Urban 800FC Headlight can’t do this and that it turns off as
soon as the charger is plugged in (according to an Amazon customer who
answered my question). Hmmm…I’m testing it now with a Cygolight Streak 350
USB that I have. Seems to be working…at least the light didn’t turn off
right away when I plugged it into the battery pack. I’ll have to let it run
for a while and see what happens.

So now I’m wondering what other lights this works for and which ones it
doesn’t work for. I guess it doesn’t really matter because I would use the
third bright light only as a High Beam for short periods when I really need
it. I’m not going to leave it continuously on and blind people.

So…has anybody else tried something like this…successfully or otherwise?
Which lights work and which ones don't?

Doug

Re: [RBW] Re: NAHBS in Sacramento Feb. 26 - 28

2016-02-06 Thread Eric Norris
Unfortunately, light rail is still years away from going to the airport. Your
best bet would be a taxi or Uber to get downtown … and once you get there, the
transit choices are going to be far less that what you’re used to in Toronto.
You’ll need to walk a lot or check the bus schedules to get around town.

Getting from Sacramento to SF is easier. You can take Amtrak from the downtown
station to Richmond and connect with BART, which goes right into downtown San
Francisco (where you’ll find more familiar transit options). There’s a BART
stop fairly close to Rivendell—check their system maps and timetables online.
