[RBW] Re: Seattle riding weather

2016-03-07 Thread shawn m.
I'll second Ryan's take on Seattle. Seriously, if the bar is really " A
sprinkle is fine. But I find a steady rain just isn't worth it to me: poor
visibility, slick roads, poor brake performance, etc." Then, yes, there
will be a lot of weekends when you won't feel like riding. Rain in the
northwest, particularly in the winter, is the constant/steady type. Not
super heavy, just relentless. Seattle is further north than you think, and
the winters are seriously dark. I can handle the rain ok, but the darkness
is what really gets to me. So far, most responses have been of the "wear
the right clothes, grin and bear it" variety, but you're pretty specific in
where you draw the line so I'd think long and hard about it. I'm not trying
to scare you off, just being realistic based on what you've said isn't
worth it for you. I ride mostly year round by necessity; I don't own a car,
to my bike is the go-to. There are MANY days in the winter when the joy of
riding can't overcome the misery of the moment for me. Also, 40F and 90%
humidity in steady rain is a good recipe for hypothermia, so it's something
you need to take care to manage. That said, I love it here (sometimes in
spite of itself) and after 30 years I still can't imagine living anywhere
else. Summers here can be so idyllic that I forgive and forget about
winter... until about the first week in November...

Re: [RBW] Best size Big Apples for Dyad rims?

2016-03-07 Thread Patrick Moore
I rode 60 mm BAs on 23 mm rims, at pressures down to 12 psi front, on dirt,
with tubes. No problems.

When I replaced the 44 mm outside to outside SnoCat SLs with 30 mm O-T-O
Velocity Blunt SSs, the 50 mm F Freds lost perhaps a mm, but gained a
rounder profile and cornered noticeably better. (The 622 X 50 FFs measure
51 mm on the V Blunt SSs.)

Remember that, in the early '90s, 19 mm outside to outside rims were
considered standard for 2" tires. I rode 1.95s on 19 mm O-T-O Sum M14As and
Trek ("Matrix") Aero rims with no problem, as long as I kept the pressure
above 20 psi.

I now use the 370 gram M14As on my gofast with 17 gr 32 mm labeled, 28 mm
actual Elk Pass ELs.

I'm 170, SYMMV.

[RBW] Best size Big Apples for Dyad rims?

2016-03-07 Thread 'Chris Lampe 2' via RBW Owners Bunch
I think I'm going to put Big Apples on my 700c Dyad rims (24mm outside
width) but since these aren't 29'er wide rims, I'm worried about sidewall
roll in sharp turns resulting from a wider tire on (relatively) more narrow
rim. Has anyone ever experienced this while running the wider BA's on a
Dyad? I'm a very heavy rider (400 lbs) and most of my riding is pavement
with a lot of sharp turns and I need a tire that will let me run a
relatively low pressure (I run my 40mm Duremes at 55-60 psi) without
worrying about mushy handling in those sharp turns.

[RBW] WTB - Early MTN Bike 26" rigid fork, not unicrown

2016-03-07 Thread JohnS
Hello All,

I'm in the market for a 26" rigid fork with canti bosses for an early
mountain bike that isn't suspension ready. The bike has a custom paint job,
purple with yellow flames, which my 15 year old son likes. It's a Schwinn,
I believe it could be a High Sierra, but not sure since the decals were
removed when it was painted. Longer steering tube the better, plan to use
it with a dirt drop stem and drop bars, his request. Please reply to
private email. Prefer to use pay-pal.

Thanks,
JohnS

Re: [RBW] Re: Seattle riding weather

2016-03-07 Thread David Stein
On the question: I'll be interested in your impressions of SF. Are you
retiring, or looking for new job, or sudden interest in New Age ...?

I moved here 5 years ago and am not tied to the bay area. It's been fun,
lots of great job opportunities (I've had 3!), fantastic weather, a 15
minute jaunt to Rivendell, but no extended family this side of the
Mississippi and housing is very very expensive (prohibitively expensive,
family is growing with a second kid coming this month).

Seattle is an option because my current job is technically supposed to be
based there but I set it up so I worked in SF, so it'd be an easy to move
and I'd probably get a relo package for it. DC and Nashville are runners up
(family in both, could easily get a job in DC).

I've actually never been to the Sothwest, heard great things about Santa
Fe, will have to make it out there especially if I move back east at some
point ;)

Re: [RBW] Re: Seattle riding weather

2016-03-07 Thread Patrick Moore
There is a pretty consistent 5-10*F difference between Duke City and The
City Different, which with the slightly greater precipitation (citywide
average in ABQ is 9"/year, and this encompasses ~14"/yr in the foothills
and ~5"/year in certain underprivileged parts of Rio Rancho) means that SF
gets noticeably more ride-inhibiting snow than does ABQ, or at least, used
to -- spring temps 30 days early this year, with all the ornamental trees
breaking into white blossom clouds in the past week instead of at the end
of the month.

I'll be interested in your impressions of SF. Are you retiring, or looking
for new job, or sudden interest in New Age ...?

[RBW] Re: Crack in the Sam headtube??

2016-03-07 Thread Grant @ Rivendell
I haven't read the responses, but it is SLIGHTLY disturbing that a possible
crack like this goes public before it comes to us. It's life in 2016, and I
harbor no anything, but it's not a direct way, and it is embarrassing. If
the second-owner of this frame contacts us directly, -- well, as the second
owner, there's little we're obligated to do, but there's always something
we will try to do. Advice. Help. Who knows? But some matters, even in an
age of "everything's public," are best handled privately.

Don't listen to these people. Seattle is terrible.

 - Extremely high rent/housing prices.
 - Public transportation is woefully underfunded and though we are
starting to get a little its far too late.
 - It rains all the time. Forever. And its cold, gross rain. Its been
shown to effect people's mood. Why do you want mood altering rain on
 purpose? It's real bad.
 - Bike people here are awesome and you will easily have an instant
group of people to hang out with and ride bikes. But the Seattle Freeze is
real and people here (myself included) just are not very outgoing happy
people. I blame the rain. You could live here for years and never make a
 true friend.

This place is really bad and I can't think of a reason anyone would
want to move here. Some people will chime in with their personal
experiences being slightly different but statistically the rain, the
freeze, and the housing costs are all facts. If you could look outside my
window right now you would think its 9:30pm. It's 9:30 AM.

Seattle is a great place if you like working on computers all day and
playing video games inside all night.

[RBW] Re: Bullmoose fitting, what's it similar too?

2016-03-07 Thread Jeremy Till
Well, the only two bars in the picture that have a stem presented are the
Bullmoose and Bosco Bullmoose, since they were the only two at the time
that came as one piece with a stem. The rest of the bars have their stem
length equalized at the clamping area, which Oli superimposed over the
cross bar of the Bosco Bullmose, which is 120mm from the stem quill on that
particular bar. So for comparing to the probably-150mm Bullmoose, you
could say that the rest of the bars are represented on an imaginary 120mm
stem.

[RBW] Re: My Joe Appaloosa

2016-03-07 Thread Bill Lindsay
That basket with major swagger is a big Wald from Riv, modified by me. I
think I have a flickr album on the modification

Hack-a-Basket

Scroll to the bottom. The final 8 photos show my process. I was inspired
by Jenny at Riv, who did something similar. She kept hers level, and just
made it shallower. I got my lean on.

[RBW] Re: Hipster jeans, riding pants, MUSA pants

2016-03-07 Thread Patrick Moore
Just 10 miles to run an errand, but the overall grade is a solid B:

Leg cut: A+
Waist cut: C- (I've ridden worse; the pair of original MUSAs were worse in
the waistband digging into your belly and hovering dangerously near your
nether parts when in hooks or hoods.)
Pockets: A
Material B- (A would be sturdy nylon, as with the pair of original MUSA
pants.)
Sewing: B: seams A but buttons the usual C or C-.
Features: C+: double fabric at crotch, slightly fitted knee (A) but no
zipper (D).

You'd not (or, I'd not) want to wear these while sweating heavily or in
rain, as the damp fabric will bind on your thighs and knees, but for cool
dry weather riding, overall a solid B.

I'm not sure these are casual pants graded B for riding, or riding pants
that are nice for wearing about the house and yard.

[RBW] Re: Seattle riding weather

2016-03-07 Thread RoadieRyan
I have a friend and fellow Seattleite who is a pretty dedicated bicycle
commuter, his moto is "I will ride in the rain, and I will ride in the
dark, I will *not* ride in the rain and the dark" which means he doesn't
commute much from November to March. I think Seattle, like most
economically successful cites is a dichotomy - on the one hand Jobs are
fairly plentiful, if you have the money there is lots of great culture
(arts, dining, sports, outdoors) to enjoy on the other congestion, housing
prices and the gap between haves and have not's sucks. As a native
North-westerner and a Seattleite for the last quarter century I am biased
lots of great places to ride, tons of scenic beauty and no better place to
be on a lovely summer day but it can really suck when its February and it
seems like its been raining non-stop for months...

Re: [RBW] Re: Seattle riding weather

2016-03-07 Thread rob markwardt
I'd guess I get rained out maybe 1-2 times a year. I ride year round,
everyday that work doesn't get in the way. The rain is a bit of a pain at
times but if you adjust it's doable. Rain jacket, booties, waterproof
gloves and fenders are a must. Another must is patience and adaptability.
We seldom get big dumps but when they happen you can usually avoid them by
looking at the radar. Yesterday was a perfect example...big rain in the
morning but I could see a window of a couple hours in the afternoon so I
delayed my ride until then. If you can't avoid the rain then you ride
through it. Usually not a big deal but you do get colder much easier so
if I'm not dressed appropriately then I go for shorter rides. I find I can
ride in a downpour for about an hour, through the drizzle for 2-3 hours,
long / all day rides are saved for none rainy days. Some of the hard core
rando dudes will ride all day in the rain but it ain't me.

[RBW] Hipster jeans, riding pants, MUSA pants

2016-03-07 Thread Patrick Moore
On Saturday, while killing time as my daughter agonized over clothing
choices, I came across these:

http://www.target.com/p/men-s-e-waist-chino-pants/-/A-50127767

The local Target (the one on Montgomery just above Wyoming) had the olive
green ones on sale for $19.97 -- rather too bright a green, but for the
price

Anyway, I bought 2 pr: my first hipster jeans, and they seem *almost* very
good for riding: trim enough not to flap in wind; narrow enough at ankle
not to catch the chain; yet, withall, loose enough that I can sit down on a
chair without the knees binding, waist (I chose 33 w/30 l) loose enough to
accommodate different thicknesses, as of under layers or the 5 lb I've
gained recently; side pockets, rear pockets, no cargo pockets (who wants
keys or iPhone bouncing on your thigh as you pedal), sturdy cotton canvas,
and crotch gusset that doubles the material in the crucial cycling spot.

The 2 principal defects:

1. No zip fly; they have wide elasticized waist with drawstring.

2. While not excessively low cut/high crotch -- they are quite comfortable
around the house -- the rear is about 1-2" lower than ideal for the
in-the-hoods-or-hooks riding position.

Now if Rivendell made these in heavyish nylon with a higher back, in
darkish gray or black, I'd put up with a no-zip front.

Off to see the Wizard; will report.

Am about to test them right *now!*

[RBW] Bullmoose fitting, what's it similar too?

2016-03-07 Thread Joe Bernard
They sweep back quite a bit, so should work for you based on the stem numbers
you list for other bars. I didn't like them much for street riding, though: The
fixed position leaves the grip-ends at an oddly up-turned angle I didn't like,
plus they're WAY too wide for my short arms (this can be fixed with a hacksaw).
They're probably fine for trail riding, which is what they were designed for
(and I don't do).

This is what Jan Heine says:

" You need at least 12 mm between tire and fender, plus about 1 mm for
the fender, and another 2-3 mm for the leather washer that cushions
the fender against the frame. This adds up to about 15 mm between tire
and bridges/fork crown. (Better would be about 20 mm.)"

[RBW] Appaloosa Pedals -- Identified

2016-03-07 Thread Bill Lindsay
On my separate Appaloosa thread, a couple people asked about the pedals. I
speculated that they might be Wellgo. I knew I had seen the wavy logo
preceding the K926 model number. It was NOT A Wellgo logo. It was a
Victor logo (VP). I've found the model, and it is called the VP Push N2.

http://www.vp-usa.com/vp-push-n2/

Looks like the going online price is $60, which I guess explains why I
thought it was so nice.

[RBW] Re: My Joe Appaloosa

2016-03-07 Thread Bill Lindsay
You are right Shoji. Even with a slammed stem this bike is still quite
upright. Since this bike could become a real loaded touring bike for me, I
am not going to rule out experimenting with drop bars on this bike. My
55cm Appaloosa has a shorter effective top tube than my 58cm Atlantis. So,
I could easily swap cockpits between the two.

Speaking of swapping stuff between my Appaloosa and my Atlantis, I did some
additional work on the front rack situation. I had a Nitto Mini front and
a Platrack in my rack inventory. Since the Appaloosa won't take a Nitto
Mini front, I decided to try moving a Nitto Big Front rack from my Atlantis
to the 'Loosa.

It actually is level. I would have ridden it into work today, but it's
pouring rain, and I haven't gotten fenders on yet.

[RBW] Re: Bullmoose fitting, what's it similar too?

2016-03-07 Thread Brian Campbell
I have the Bullmoose on my Hunq. and even though the bike is new to me, I
have used the same set of bars on two other bikes. For rough riding I think
they are great. On my 61cm AHH, I use a 46cm Nitto Noodle with/ a 90mm
stem.

Using the cork ergon grips on the bullmoose allows you to dial in the angle
at which your wrists fall and given that they attach using an allen bolts
are easily adjustable, to find the sweet spot for comfort. I rode mine for
over 3 hrs yesterday and had no pain or stiffness. I have not run them too
much longer than that so as to all day non stop riding, I am not sure. I am
thinking of removing about an inch from each end as the width can be a
blessing and a curse. It allows you to maneuver the bike pretty strongly if
need be but they can be a bit wide on tighter trails.

Mine are set up with the grips about saddle height and they are the 150mm
version. FWIW, since I "grew up" on straight bars on mountain bikes, I do
not like drops or Albas for off road riding. I never feel I get the
leverage I need when I need to lift or move the bike a substantial amount.
The problem for me with straight bars though, is the weight distribution
that creates pain in my wrists, palms & shoulders. I get none of those with
the bullmoose. There is also no flex in the bar stem combo when you hit
rough terrain or washboard. I never feel afraid that I am going to wrench
the bar loose from the stem if I hit a drop off the wrong way or plant in a
hole.

As a test yesterday, I put my hands on the cross section of the bar above
the supports and was able to steer confidently when the road was smooth. So
I guess that could be a second and slightly aero position?

Re: [RBW] Re: Seattle riding weather

2016-03-07 Thread David Stein
Well a lot of factors go into moving, cycling and being outdoors is just
one piece of the puzzle. I guess my question, in its most simple form is:
is Seattle a constant rain or more intermittent? I think I have my answer,
which is its mostly a drizzle, with bouts of steady rain as well as breaks
in the clouds, which is fine, and sounds like its fairly easy to fit in a
weekend ride assuming I have some flexibility and am ok with at least a
drizzle or risk of, summers sound amazing.

the rain is constant, or if it lets up here and there making it pretty easy
to find a dry spell, if even for a few hours. Sounds like the latter (and
thats what it seems like when I go there for work). It doesn't rain much in
the bay area, but when it does i find it its pretty steady with almost no
brake in the action, making it harder to get out. Tennessee was the same
way for months on end in the winter, just really poor riding conditions.

The seattle summers sound pretty nice! I've been there and the sun
going down at 10PM and the great weather make it pretty appealing.

Re: [RBW] Re: Seattle riding weather

2016-03-07 Thread 'Tim' via RBW Owners Bunch
You already know that you don't like riding in the rain so unless you want to
try to change that, and you have a choice of where to live, maybe you should
try somewhere else. I was working in the Northeast for the past 3 years and I
decided to do PBP. That meant I rode in lots and lots of less than ideal
cycling weather. Once I made up my mind it was a matter of suiting up and
riding, no matter what. I don't like indoor riding so that was always a last
resort. So I learned that I could ride in pretty much any weather, but I don't
like it one little bit. If I could work and ride anywhere I think the Southwest
might be the place. I guess what I'm saying is if cycling is important to you
and you can live where you want, and hate the rain, maybe you should choose
somewhere that it doesn't rain 200 days a year :)

[RBW] Re: Bullmoose fitting, what's it similar too?

2016-03-07 Thread drew
my experience is limited to a vintage nitto set. i think the effective
reach is 130mm on mine. (available for sale). they look badass, but i did
not like them for a few reasons. I think those reasons are sort of
amended/fixed in the newer rivendell offering. the older ones are, more or
less, flat/straight bars. there is very little sweep to them. also, the
quill length doesnt allow them to be raised very much, so i ended up being
in a pretty aggressive position on a flat bar with one hand position. i
also felt like they put my body in a position where my legs had to work
harder. i can see how they would be good for mtb stuff where you need to be
able to really manhandle the front end. i dont have much call for that type
of riding, so i disliked them so much that i doubt ill even try the updated
riv bullmoose. its just not a shape that i see working for me on really
long or super casual rides, which is mostly what i end up doing.

this is the progression that my 84 trek mtb went through.
-albatross, 120cm stem- too uprighty and hand painy over long periods
-map/ahearne- 120cm stem- good mix of upright vs forward leaning. wide
enough for control and hand movement.
-vintage bullmoose
-return to map/ahearne happiness.

like patrick, on my hunq i have albastache bars with a short stem and am
coming to the realization that these are probably the best bars for me.

i bought the choco bars to try out (since sold them), and i wouldnt compare
them to the albastache. if anything, they feel like a flat bosco or an
albatross that comes back even further, but gives you a slightly more
comfortable forward position than albatross since there is minimal rise.
with a 13cm (the longest) tallux, the choco bars retreated toward the
saddle at least 9-10cm more than the albastache on a stem with a 6cm (the
shortest) effective reach.

[RBW] Re: Bullmoose fitting, what's it similar too?

2016-03-07 Thread Shoji Takahashi
Hi Mark,
I have a bullmoose for my Hunqapillar. (I'll have to check the extension--
I don't recall the measurement. Riv carried two or more different
extensions at some point.)

I have a few sets of bars for the bike:
bullmoose (unknown extension)
albatross (120mm)
48 noodles (100mm)
moustache classic (70mm)

The bullmoose works fine for me as do those other bars. It is quite wide,
which is fine for some situations, but not so much for commuting in the
city. As far as comfort: longer rides aren't very comfortable to me. My
wrists start to ache, and they prefer the angle of albatross or the ability
to wander to different positions (a la noodles, moustache).

One thing to note: I find the rise a bit high. I'd like a bit more
aggressive position with the flat bar, but I can't get it any lower. Here's
a side view of my bike to see the relationship of the bars and saddle:
https://www.flickr.com/photos/stakx/13087352004/in/album-72157634163491121/

For reference: it's a 48cm Hunapillar. Saddle height is ~70cm.

Good luck!
Shoji

Re: [RBW] Re: Seattle riding weather

2016-03-07 Thread David Stein
Haha, i am legitimately worried about the endless gray skies in the pac nw.
that could play into it as well, outside of bike riding. i have heard
strong warnings about the freeze, it does seem very real. though i can't
say the bay area is a whole lot different in that aspect at least from the
5 years I've been here (local rbw riders withstanding that rule of course!)

austin is a viable city with tons of job opportunities for me, spent a bit
of time there, but probably not going to happen, all my friends just moved
away from there.

DC or back to Tennessee is the other option if I were to move, those
winters are pretty brutal but at least i know what i'm in for. DC can have
more temperate summers, 'can' being the key word. but i remember getting
pretty stir crazy in the winters.

worst case i say screw it and trade in all my bikes for a pirogue and some
fishing gear and move back to my home town of new orleans.

What you're missing out on in the Bay Area is when spring hits, the
days get longer. During the summer months, the sun doesn't go down until
9pm/10pm; lots of late night dinners on the patio after a long commute
 home.

Winter riding is about suiting up to stay dry on the rainy days, which
are not as terrible as a lot of people think (ust don't tell any of your
neighbors I told you that ;) ). Make sure you have good lighting if you're
commuting to work in the winter months. As the days get longer in spring,
lights won't matter as much unless you're riding at 5am. It's already
 getting lighter around 6am.

[RBW] Bullmoose fitting, what's it similar too?

2016-03-07 Thread Mark Reimer
I've been considering purchasing the bullmoose bar for my Atlantis. With
some 2.2" tires that'd make a real fun rough road bike packing setup. I see
they are only available in a 150mm reach. I'm curious if anyone is using
them here and how that reach compares with other bars?

For reference, I'm comfortable with the following:
- Nitto albatross with 120mm stem
- Nitto noodle with 110mm stem
- Soma Portola dirt drop with 100cm dirt drop stem

Based on that, any ideas how the bullmoose would fit in?

Re: [RBW] Re: Seattle riding weather

2016-03-07 Thread Ryan Ray
Don't listen to these people. Seattle is terrible.

- Extremely high rent/housing prices.
- Public transportation is woefully underfunded and though we are starting
to get a little its far too late.
- It rains all the time. Forever. And its cold, gross rain. Its been shown
to effect people's mood. Why do you want mood altering rain on purpose?
It's real bad.
- Bike people here are awesome and you will easily have an instant group of
people to hang out with and ride bikes. But the Seattle Freeze is real and
people here (myself included) just are not very outgoing happy people. I
blame the rain. You could live here for years and never make a true friend.

This place is really bad and I can't think of a reason anyone would want to
move here. Some people will chime in with their personal experiences being
slightly different but statistically the rain, the freeze, and the housing
costs are all facts. If you could look outside my window right now you
would think its 9:30pm. It's 9:30 AM.

Seattle is a great place if you like working on computers all day and
playing video games inside all night.

Re: [RBW] Seattle riding weather

2016-03-07 Thread Jim Bronson
There are plenty of people in the Seattle Randonneuring group who make the
R-12 (a 200K every month for a year) and K-Hound (10,000KM in a year) so it
must not be that bad ;)

Actually I'm from western Oregon originally and had weather not so
dissimilar to Seattle. I never really thought twice about riding in the
rain when I was a kid because I didn't know any different. I had a Schwinn
Collegiate 12 speed with EGSE fenders, now known of course as SKS. The
only thing you had to be careful about was the brakes, they were highly
ineffective when wet with the steel rims.

Of course nowadays with machined aluminum sidewalls stopping power in the
wet is a lot better.

The rain is different in the NW than in the South. It's sunnier more in
the South with more thunderstorms and torrential downpours. Not so much in
the NW, thunderstorms are relatively rare west of the Cascades. In the NW,
you'll get the same amount of rain in 100 days of drizzle. You can handle
the drizzle, man up and go ride. Just stay home on the truly nasty days.

Re: [RBW] Re: PSA: NOS 56 Rambouillett on KC Craigslist

2016-03-07 Thread dougP
If the seller gets his price, he will be (roughly) getting back his
purchasing power on his investment. I doubt anyone buys a frame, then
stores it for a long time, with the intent to sell in the future. However,
if that is the case, he's only breaking even on this one.

As always, the market will find the "right" price.

Re: [RBW] Re: Seattle riding weather

2016-03-07 Thread David Stein
Thanks All! My interest lies more in weekend riding, preferably without
rain. A sprinkle is fine. But I find a steady rain just isn't worth it to
me: poor visibility, slick roads, poor brake performance, etc. Commuting
aside, trying to gauge if there are long stretches (weeks, months) where
the rain is constant, or if it lets up here and there making it pretty easy
to find a dry spell, if even for a few hours.

I've been there and the sun going
down at 10PM and the great weather make it pretty appealing.

What you're missing out on in the Bay Area is when spring hits, the days
get longer. During the summer months, the sun doesn't go down until
9pm/10pm; lots of late night dinners on the patio after a long commute home.

Winter riding is about suiting up to stay dry on the rainy days, which are
not as terrible as a lot of people think (ust don't tell any of your
neighbors I told you that ;) ). Make sure you have good lighting if you're
commuting to work in the winter months. As the days get longer in spring,

First of all, thanks to all of you for your help, even when it is
contradictory - "sand some more", no "don't sand any more!" "Send to Riv"
vs "no, don't send to Riv yet!"

I am going to see if there is a local frame builder here (there was, but I
haven't heard of him for awhile), consult with Riv, consult with my LBS,
and try to figure something out.

I will keep you all updated. I rode my mid 1970's Raleigh sprite to work
today - also acquired off this list. Thanks Marty G!

I don't own a Jeff Lyon, but a friend in the local bike club had one,
and I've seen it up close and have ridden it a short distance. It's
lovely, every bit as nice as my MAP. But, as you note, it's not a
Rivendell -- it's not even very much like a Rivendell, being in the
small diameter tubing, front loading low trail camp.

they're good for high and higher...

You need to take a look at Jeff Lyon's frames. The L'Avecaise is
definitely "NAHBS quality" and equally definitely nicer than a

stock frame sized in 2 cm increments.

Re: [RBW] Re: PSA: NOS 56 Rambouillett on KC Craigslist

2016-03-07 Thread islaysteve
Well now that the issue of price has been raised, I will say that the
asking price struck me as high. However, consider that this is a NIB
Rivendell that is no longer made, a bike that is highly desireable
(apparently) in what is arguably the most desirable color. It's less than
a new Rodeo or AHH, even if we consider that a buyer may or may not want
one of those models more. I guess you can get some customs for less than
$2000, but I doubt you could get an NAHBS-quality lugged frame for less.
And finally, many Riv owners/buyers wouldn't consider anything else. So
it is, for some, indeed the Grail. I'm not defending the price, just
expressing some thoughts. Someone will pay what they will pay, obviously.

There's no such thing as bad weather, only bad clothing.

For grins I tested this out the other day, though not intentionally. I

sunny and mid-30's. But boy-howdy was there a wind. The kind of wind that
makes the ride steeper both ways -- steeper up the pass, steeper down the
pass. My bones had goose pimples. On a whim, I decided to see what I had in
my saddlebag. Ha! I'd not unpacked my single layer ventile. I donned it and
was instantly out of the wind. Everything relaxed. It took a half mile of
chugging up the pass some more to warm my bones back up, but I instantly
felt better. I was no longer "braving" anything. I was out having a blast,
getting blasted by 40+ mph winds, then turning around and letting those
winds sail me down the dirt roads and paths in an amazing sensation of

[RBW] Re: Crack in the Sam headtube??

2016-03-07 Thread Ron Mc
Metallurgist here.
Not semantics, but a crack is a progressive thing. Your "cracks" show
displacement (opening strain) and blunt tips. My best guess, this is
actually overload tearing that showed up from constraint and thermal
contraction during cooling from the original braze. It's been masked by
paint until flexure finally popped the paint.
It may never grow as a progressive crack, but is not a good thing to have.
The easiest fix, short of ignoring it, would be strip all the paint,
dye-check or magnaflux. (If you don't know somebody, you can check for
local nondestructive testing shops.) If you verify there are no tight
growing crack extensions, drill holes at the visible tips to ensure they
have a generous radius. 1/16" drill is probably sufficient.
I still recommend bringing this to Rivendell's attention and letting them
offer alternative repair solutions.
