[RBW] Re: The Cheviot has arrived!

2016-09-25 Thread René Sterental
Funny that the photo of the shifters in the Soma page is exactly reversed
to how I set them up, which is to mimic how the shifters work on the down
tube.

David, I set the tires up on Atlas rims which are wider than standard road
rims. I'll measure them when I get home next Sunday afternoon.

BTW, not an exact measurement, but with the bikes hanging from the front
wheel on my garage wall, the 60 cm Cheviot is about a bit less than a half
wheel longer than the 61 Homer. I'll measure total length when I get home,
but am curious to see how it will fit on Caltrain, in the smaller bike cars
that have 3 sided cages for the bikes. The 58 Hunqapillar fit tightly with
50mm tires and fenders and the Cheviot seems longer with no fenders yet...

Re: [RBW] Re: Hypothetical albastache handlebar setup

2016-09-25 Thread Jeremy Tavan
I'm actually looking at the albastache because I want the longer reach
option - I have a very long torso, proportionately, and most swept-back
bars end up too close for comfort except with really, really long top tube
bikes and really long stems. I appreciate all the feedback from folks on
this list! I'll give them a shot with regular road bike levers "as
specified" and see how it goes. Is it better to use a straight-bladed brake
lever, or one of the ergo-ish ones like the TRP RRL?

3rd that. I have albastaches on my hunqapillar and hear what you're saying.
I keep going back and forth between having something upright like the
albatross with brake levers at the ends of the bars vs. albastache with
breaks in the drops and at the end of the day I prefer the albastache - the
brakes are pretty accessible and you still get the upright riding when you
want it. If the bars are high enough and the stem short enough it shouldn't
be too far of a reach to the drops.

[RBW] JumboBackabikeGrabbySackThingy

2016-09-25 Thread Surlyprof
I was fortunate enough to stumble across what looked to be an early
prototype of the Jumbo Grabby Sack for $20 in the last Riv garage sale. It
has a handle and shoulder/waist strap in the back and had a makeshift brown
shoulder strap loosely attached with a sewing awl. It also has only one
wood toggle with a stiffening dowel like they use on the Saddlesacks. I
took off the makeshift shoulder strap and added two large eyelets in the
back (like the early Backabike sacks). I've also made a stiffening
framesheet with some black sheet ABS I had lying around (as I'm sure
everyone does). I strapped it on with an Irish Strap for a very successful
maiden voyage across the bay. I may trim down the height of the framesheet
and add another shoulder strap of gray seatbelt webbing since we have
commercial sewing machines in our prototyping lab. For now it seems to be
working out pretty well. Photos prove it does exist:

[RBW] Hypothetical albastache handlebar setup

2016-09-25 Thread Jeremy Tavan
I'm putting together a commuter bike for my 18-mile commute because my
fancy bikes are too fancy and my Clem is too long to fit nicely in the bike
racks on the train back home. So I'm going to build up an old English
3-speed that will hopefully fit the bill. For handlebars, I am thinking
about using the albastache with two sets of brake levers: reverse levers in
the ends for the casual upright stance, and cyclocross-style interrupter
levers on the curves for when I'm riding more aggressively.

Has anyone tried this? If so, how'd it work for you? I wonder if the
interrupter levers will even mount on/near those curves.

the clearance with fender and tire and the crown, which seemed plenty to

there's enough space side to side that I'm not really worried about it.

[RBW] Re: The Cheviot has arrived!

2016-09-25 Thread David Banzer
Bike looks great! I'm trying to figure out how I can justify a Cheviot in
my stable. I just broke my daily commuter, building up a VO Campeur as new
commuter, but if that doesn't fit right, a Cheviot might be in my future.
Any chance you measured the actual width of the Compass Snoqualmie Pass
tires?
I've seen that they run smaller than 44mm on typical road rims. I might
need to order a pair just to have - could fit on a couple bikes depending
on actual width.

[RBW] 650b'd Redwood.

2016-09-25 Thread David Banzer
While I've converted my Redwood to 650b wheels in the past, I briefly
swapped back to 700c wheels with Barlow Pass tires.
I swapped out 650b as I had been using Vee Rubber Speedsters which measured
47mm actual. Under heavy pedaling, the tires would rub at the chainstays. I
could dent the chainstays for more clearance - the current indentations
line up for a 700c tire - but I'd rather not if I don't have to.
When the WTB Horizon tires were announced, I patiently waited until they
were released and some actual measurements were shared. My tools are mostly
packed up so I don't have calipers, but I think they're around 44mm actual,
which is perfect. I'll be adding some SKS fenders shortly - there is
adequate clearances front/rear.

My to do-list for this bike:
Swap cranks - Dura Ace crankset goes back to wife's Clementine, Shimano
Deore/600 cranks will be put on w/ 46/34 rings
Change cassette - it'll be a custom 12-28 8-speed
Change brakes - going to try DC 750 centerpulls
Add fenders
Lower bars 1cm
Swap saddles - GB Aspin saddle will go on
Make up a set of rack-less bags

Re: [RBW] Leah's Bicycle Bus! (and question)

2016-09-25 Thread LeahFoy
*The below is really just storytelling about a neighborhood and its kids and
their bikes. There won't be anything informative or life-altering. It's really
just my reflections on bringing back cycling in the suburbs.*

We've been having a lot of new experiences on our bicycle bus. Lots of kids
come and go, and no one rides every day, save us, but we usually have a a
couple of kids join us. One day, we picked up a group of 3 girls. N is a 5th
grader who was a guest of the regular pair of sisters who join us. N's little
sister was being worked up for a possible cancer diagnosis, and her mother had
sent her to stay with family friends for a couple of days. She was thrown into
the bicycle bus without any say in the matter and when I met her that morning,
she was white with panic.

"Are you scared?" I asked her. "No," she said, "I'm TERRIFIED."

Okay then. I tried to puff up her courage a bit, and we set off down the giant
hill, traveling more slowly than normal. We made it to campus without incident
and N took a deep breath and began to focus on more important matters. "I like
your bike," she said, "because it has hearts and apples!" It's the little
things.

A family of 4 has been joining us as we ride by their house at least twice per
week. Both parents like to come when they can, and they have a 3rd grader and
2nd grader. Those kids are riding Diamondback bikes in their proper sizes,
which are a major improvement from the cheap and too-small sized bikes the rest
of the kids ride. But the Diamondbacks are still heavy what with their
suspension forks and all, and they have no way to carry luggage or water. Mom
rides an Electra and Dad has a Gary Fischer mountain bike. Mom and Dad take
the backpacks and use a Camelback water system, which they share. I sent Mom a
link to racks for her Electra, and she is looking into purchasing one.

The pair of sisters L and G may get new bikes for Christmas. L rides her
mother's big, fendered cruiser-type bike, which has a rear rack. She's been to
Walmart, dreaming of which bike she would like. I bite my tongue, but I really
want to tell her to look for a Specialized on Craigslist. The Hotrock can take
a rack and has been a great bike for my older son. G is on a Barbie bike that
is a mere 20 inches and she is a 5th grader. It is painful to watch her wobble
to school with her knees knocking her chin, and her lunch bag swinging madly
from her bars.

The bike racks at school are now full to bursting with bikes and scooters. It's
a welcome sight, but also gives me a pang of sadness. Almost none of the bikes
are good for commuting. Most are woefully small for the rider. M is a kid who
describes his dad as being a "bike racer." M was given a new lime green
Specialized Hotrock to ride to school. The problem is that M is a 5th grader,
and he is riding the 20 inch bike. It would fit my 2nd grader. He loves the
bike; I know he does because he tried and tried to ride it, and lime green
appears to be his favorite color. But wobbling home while having to carry your
35 lb backpack and Chromebook and lunch sack and eventually, a musical
instrument wasn't feasible. So now he walks. He trudges along, laden with stuff
and his shiny lime Hotrock sits, neglected in the garage.

We live in an affluent area. Most of these kids are shuttled to school with
zero effort of their own, and zero discomfort. It's a valet line in the car
loop. A school employee opens your door, and you jump out. That's IT. That's
the end of your obligation to get to school, kid. Meanwhile, the kids who are
trying to get there by bike are doing it on the most ill-fitting, ill-equipped
machines. Their parents would say a quality bike is too expensive; but they
don't say that when plunking down the money for their child's new iPhone. This
is not a problem I can fix, so I am learning to let it go...

The new issue I'm seeing on our horizon is that of unhappy pedestrians. We had
6 kids and 2 moms bookending them on Thursday, and that's a lot of bikes. We
live in a terribly car-centric area. Everyone commutes by car into the city,
which means cars are heading down our mountain at around 50 mph. There is no
shoulder, and no bike lane, and only one road and we all must share it. We
were, however, blessed with extra wide sidewalks; they are actually called
"trails" and given their width, I heartily agree. The problem is that
pedestrians of all types - dog walkers, joggers, moms with strollers - often
don't understand they aren't the only ones using the trails. They zig zag and
walk on the left, or just take up the whole thing and walk right in the middle.
This poses a problem. I really get the feeling that they think of bell-ringing
as honking. No one has ever responded positively to it, that I can tell. So,
rather than *ding ding*, before I pass, I call out, "Good morning!" They
usually get the hint and either move over or hold their line. It's all mostly
smooth until

Note: Cork is no longer sold so these are a bit rare.

Both saddles have been ridden @2,000 miles so you should assume they are
broken in. Having said that, I weigh 155 lbs so they have not been
stretched much. Both have been scraped up by minor falls, think bike
tipping over not wrecks. I have tried to capture the damage as best as
possible.

Both saddles have been caught out in the rain on occasion. I have tried to
cover them as much as possible but they have gotten wet at one time or
another. In theory these are water resistant leather. They are more
resistant than Brooks but I would recommend that you still bring your
saddle cover with you. Just sayin...

I am letting them go because I live in the East and like manual
transmissions, sometimes you get tired of the overhead of great cool stuff.
I would rather have Cambium saddles and not have to always check to see if
I have a cover or not. Or rummage through a trashcan for a plastic bag,
etc. They are beautiful saddles, very comfortable but not for me anymore.

Re: [RBW] Rat Trap Pass tubeless on Atlas rims?

2016-09-25 Thread Patrick Moore
Not my experience, alas. I've had experts set up tubeless ready tires on
tubeless unready rims with lotsa tape, and while it worked after a fashion,
it was chancy whether the beads would stay tight against the rim when air
pressure was released; IOW, the setup required air pressure to secure the
beads firmly. Real tubeless setups (eg, F Freds and Velocity Blunt SS's)
don't require air pressure to keep the beads in place.

Why not rely on air pressure, you ask? Well me, I fear finding, 20 miles
from home, after a tire deflates, that I have no way of getting bead and
rim back together again.

Still, if the truth of the assertion cannot be held to be universally true,
your setup might work, and I'd be interested to hear if it does.

[RBW] Rat Trap Pass tubeless on Atlas rims?

2016-09-25 Thread dstein
Anyone mount Rat Trap Pass tubeless on Velocity Atlas rims? The tires are
tubeless ready but I don't think the rims are. I've asked tubeless
questions in the past and the general response I get is - if you use the
right tape and enough sealant, anything can be tubeless ;).

Thinking of buying the Rivendell 26" dyno wheelset (vs. going a build with
something like the velocity cliffhanger rims)

[RBW] DC Area Friends Meet-up?

2016-09-25 Thread Howard Hatten
Chris, I rode the gap @ c this past spring. You'll enjoy much nicer trail
conditions on the gap. Hopefully fall colors will greet you. If you camp at one
place I recommend Husky Haven Campground in Rockwood. Reserve early enough and
your group might get a covered campsite. They have a few. Very nice owners &
firewood is plentiful. (Free).
If my wife didn't have a surgery coming up I would join you. Have a nice ride.

[RBW] DC Area Friends Meet-up?

2016-09-25 Thread Pondero
I was fortunate to meet several of you DC area folks last year when I came
out for the C tour. Some of you even rode and camped with us. We had
such a great time, we wanted to come back and do something similar this
year.

Me, son-in-law Carey, and Steve Butcher (graveldoc) are planning a return
this year for the GAP trail tour. Like last year, our itinerary is a
little constrained. But we want to extend the invitation for you to join
in, or meet-up somewhere, just in case it works out. The plan looks like
this...

Thursday (10/6) - arrive in Silver Spring

Friday (10/7) - time with my grandson, but flexible for a meet-up

Saturday (10/8) - part of day devoted to family outing, but also
coffeeneuring somewhere in Silver Spring, morning meet-up opportunity

Sunday (10/9) - drive to Pittsburgh, hoping to drop in at Gravel and Grind
for a visit on the way

Monday-Thursday (10/10 to 10/13) - ride from Pittsburgh to Cumberland, MD
on the GAP trail, some camping, some lodging

Friday (10/14) - time with my grandson, but some flexibility for a meet-up

Saturday (10/15) - return to Texas

I've already had a couple of offline conversations with a couple of you,
and hope we'll be able to visit with you again this year. If anyone is
interested in riding the GAP trail with us, I'll be happy to provide more
details on our anticipated schedule for that.
