[RBW] Re: Any recommendations for grips on a Bullmoose handlebar?

I use bullmoose bars on my Clem, and have been using WTB Comfort Zone grips
on them. I find them quite comfortable. If I were doing more aggressive
off-road riding where I needed to be able to rotate my grip more, I'd
probably go with something more rounded, but for my use (mainly pavement,
occasional trail) these have worked well and are inexpensive.

Re: [RBW] Pano's built up Rivendell custom on Rivendell flicker

2017-03-25 Thread Patrick Moore
Pano: thanks for the well thought out description and analysis. You have
made a very good case for the Albastaches! My one concern at this point is
the width; I dislike bars much wider than 44 cm -- 25 years ago I used to
cut 2" off each side of my mountain bike bars, and weren't those bars
already narrow by modern standards? My road bikes have 38 cm drop bars (I'm
a medium-sized 5'10" with much of my height in my torso, but I still like
narrow bars).

If I tried the Albastaches, I'd try them on the Matthews -- a lightish drop
bar'd dirt road bike, which I ride on our local sandy terrain. Currently it
has 42 cm at-the-hoods Maes Parallels. I suppose the sit up and beg
position, with arms wide, would be alright because you are almost sure to
be taking it easy and going slow. How wide between the mid points of the
bends? That position does look doable; and the hoods of course are nice and
narrow. The width of the original Moustache bar doesn't bother me, but
that's because I always ride on the curves or on the hoods.

Hmmm ...

[RBW] Walkapillar s240 ride report

2017-03-25 Thread drew

I went out after work last night to meet some friends at Musch camp in
Topanga CA, which is only about 18 miles from where i work. about 14 of
those 18 are on dirt roads and trails up in the santa monica mountains.
Early on, a guy from Road Bike Action Magazine stopped and asked if he
could take my picture with my bike. Im not sure there are lots of people
riding non suspended bikes up there and carrying a bunch of stuff. a few
other people knew what a Rivendell was though, so that was cool. The ride
in was really nice, but at the end of it, it turned into steep, descending
singletrack with big rocks and steps. So i hiked it in, but thought that i
should try to find another way back when i left, so i wouldnt have to carry
the bike up that. My friends bailed, so i just stayed the one night. I
looked at google maps for a new way back and their recommended route looked
ok on paper. In actuality, it involved sneaking through someone's backyard
to get to the trail, the trail turning out to be a completely overgrown
horse trail with a grade that i could barely walk up, being chased by dogs
while pushing the bike through what you see in the last photo, and
introducing me to the effects of poison oak for the first time. Google maps
lesson learned. The hunqapillar didnt flinch.

The Thunder Burt is an excellent tire, and rolls well on pavement -
especially the LiteStar variant.

If you considering that tire, you might also look at the Clement X'plor MSO

Velo Lumino is expanding into the "fender installation widget" space.
The first of several widgets in this category is a reinforcement plate
inspired by the old French constructeurs. It reduces fender stress fatigue
at a common failure location by reducing localized stress risers. And it
looks damn fine while doing it. Photo below is on a VO Zeppelin 650B
fender. The plate is thin enough (0.64mm) that is doesn't noticeably alter
the fender line of existing fender installations, and its shape can be
tweaked by hand to follow different fender contours.

It's cut from aluminum sheet stock using water jet technology. It's
then pressed onto a curved form to create a nominal fender cross-section
radius and finally it's machine polished to a mirror finish. Two flat-head
stainless M3 bolts with flat washers, star washers, nuts and a leather
washer for the bridge are included in the price.

$720 for the frame, headset, kickstand, BB. Frame is in near pristine

in three lowest cog and does not affect the ride.

I am happy to discuss any of the parts you might like as well.

Re: [RBW] Pano's built up Rivendell custom on Rivendell flicker

2017-03-25 Thread panog
@Patric Moore

Thank you and yes, it is a custom.

In reference to your comments on the Albastache, I'll try to convey my thoughts
on them over a use of about 500 miles which admidetly is neither long nor
diverse enough so consider the following as work in progress.

I have found three distinct hand positions on the Albastache. In front of the
bar-ends (in line with the quill), mid-way up from the bar-ends (in front of
the quill), on the bar hook and lastly on the brake levers. The first two
result in a more upright posture and more compact cockpit while the last two
get you flatter and more stretched out. Flatter and stretched out means more
efficient power generation and generally less air resistance. Can these two
reach the levels achieved by a PROPERLY set drop bar? I dont think so but they
could be close enough and that's the compromise one must be willing to accept
in return for the most comfortable, more upright position the Albastache offer,
if such position is in pursuit.

Both the Albastache and the drops attempt to reach their usability range but I
think they are doing so starting from polar opposite positions. The drops start
from the more power - more speed prospective and compromise from there to a
more comfort - more user friendly state while the Albastache start from a more
comfort -more upright prospective and compromise to a more power - more speed
state. As such, therefore, they should not, IMO, be considered as a direct
replacement for each other if the intended purpose of the bike does not warrant
it. What I'm saying here is that I would not use the Albastache for a bike
whose purpose was crit racing or sprinting but I could consider experimenting
with them on a touring bike where power output and speed could be willingly
compromised in exchange of comfort.

Regarding the number of hand positions available on either, I have empirically
concluded that either offers enough and do not consider this to be a factor any
more. This is coming from someone who has undergone surgical intervention to
release the ulnar nerves at the elbow from sustained abuse caused by long rides
and not so good fitting cockpits.

Regarding the air resistance and ducking the wind you mentioned, I am still
experimenting with that but not for the reasons you may have expected. When the
head-on winds pick up, the conventional approach has been to get to the drops.
The German Tour magazine did some interesting wind tunnel tests studying the
drag imposed on the rider from different posture positions. They found that
tucking on the tops with elbows down is superior, drag reduction wise, to
tucking on the drops. Reason being that width of frontal area (not just height)
plays a significant part in creating drag. Either bar when handled like that
gets similar results. However, the problem I personally have with this approach
and higher speeds is loss of stability.

I think you should give the Albastache a try and judge for yourself. I know I'm
keeping them on the Riv for the foreseeable future. The differences with the
Moustache you mentioned, are shallower drop (2.5 cm vs. 5 cm), shallower hooks
and a touch more width.

enough on pavement (not Marathon Supreme well) and get good grip in the

[RBW] Tigged welds on Rosco Road

2017-03-25 Thread iamkeith
Assuming they'll look like my first-run clem, they are not smooth at all.
There's a thickish bead, with visible and very evenly-spaced, overlapped
"pools." The wet paint is thicker than powdercoat, so the texture is not
"rough," though - it's just "relief."

Is that what you're wondering? They look very nice and strong, to me. I still
have a few tig welded, steel, boutique bikes from the '90s, with almost no
visible bead. Ibis, potts, etc. They look neat, but i never understood how
the joints stayed together.

Mark,

What is a tombstone? Is it that small "uplift" at the end of the rack, so

[RBW] Re: 700 x 45-50 options

2017-03-25 Thread Trenker

Thanks, both of those look interesting.

I could use a Marathon Supreme 50 as well. It would be fine, however
ideally I prefer some tread, I have slid out and crashed on the slick
Marathon Supreme on wet pavement; I learned not to exceed those limits but
it's nice to have a margin of safety.

Incidentally I have to wonder about some kind of conflicted feelings of the
Maxxis guy who comes up with names for their tires. “Torch” conveys to me
something combustible that burns up fast. Another one of my favourite
strange Maxxis names is “Detonator:” not sure that is the image I want to
be rolling along on. :-)

Re: [RBW] Pano's built up Rivendell custom on Rivendell flicker

2017-03-25 Thread Patrick Moore
Very pretty. I'm late to the thread, but I take it that this one is a
custom? It's certainly all bagged out!

I am tempted to try the Albastaches. My concern, as yours was, is riding
into the wind. Can you get both a position low enough to duck the wind and
generate power, while at the same time one high enough to sit up and beg,
so to speak, while allowing control? This is one of the 2 big virtues of
the drop bar, low and high positions (the other being so many hand
positions). It does l*ook* more comfortable than the M bar, though "look"
in this sentence carries exactly no weight.

But congratulations; again, very nice.

I quite like the Schwalbe Big One:
http://www.bicyclerollingresistance.com/mtb-reviews/schwalbe-big-one-2016

Slightly wider than you asked for at 57mm (measured, from the link) but
still nice and light and supple.

Fits my Hunq. I think it'll work on an Atlantis? I use the Compass 38mm for
paved touring and these for more interesting stuff.

What is available in tires 700 x 45-50 for commuting and touring? For an
Atlantis on synergy rims. I have used Marathon Supremes in 700 x 40. They
are really nice tires and I have toured with them. Most of the paved and
unpaved roads in my area are fine with these, but some newly laid gravel
can need a wider tire.

I have Compass 700x44 and they are very light tires. For touring they’d be
all right because even if I get a flat every couple of days it doesn’t
matter, since I stop to rest anyway. But they are hardly bigger than the
Compass 700x38, they measure about 40-42 mm on my rims. For combined
touring and commuting I want something a bit sturdier than the Compass and
a bit lighter construction than the Marathon Supreme, at least 45 mm wide. I
want to make good use of the clearance on the Atlantis.

I was thinking $900 shipped conus for the frameset/bb/hs and $1700 for a bare
bones complete shipped. That's with a dyno (Shimano) front wheel and matching
rear rim (Alex Adventurer) laced to a high flange VO hub in the rearand
Paul brakes (complete bike minus saddle/pedals).

Here's another pic pre dyno treatment:

https://instagram.com/p/6Ij9lyTSZi/

I would place it around a 7/8, there's a few scratches here and there but in
pretty good shape. I have a lot of bikes so it doesn't see as much action as
the typical enthusiast.
