[RBW] Re: Extreme Commuting--a checklist ride complete

2018-04-25 Thread dstein
Props for accomplishing this. I've ridden through Redwood/JMP to Chabot and
on to San Leandro BART sticking to trails the whole way, which is only like
a 3rd of this and it kicked my ass (though I started from rockridge bart so
I was 5 miles of climbing in already). I don't do long road rides either,
usually 25-35 miles so maybe I'm just a lightweight. But anyway, I know
those trails and for the people on here not in the area, I can attest
they're pretty freaking hard.

[RBW] Which tire (and can I get by without sealant?) for AZ road/dirt

2018-04-25 Thread 'Tim' via RBW Owners Bunch
I'm working for a few months in Casa Grande, AZ, about halfway between Phoenix
and Tucson, in the valley. I've got 3 bikes here, so I'm going to pull the
fenders off my Homer (which has become really fun with Albatross bars) and put
some wide (38-42mm) tires. It will be my around town, out to the mountain, dirt
canal path (maybe even a dirt century), light gravel bike. I don't think I want
Compass because, although I love them, I'm a heavy rider and the rear Compass
on my MAP wore out after 1500 miles. I think they're too fragile. And I
discovered goatheads yesterday on the Hunqapillar. Patrick Moore, I think I
honestly thought that I would be that guy from the Midwest who came out here
and didn't use sealant and didn't get a flat. WRONG!!! Rear flat on the
Hunqapillar. The the the goathead was still all there. I didn't see the other
four spots with just the slivers. I got sealant and new tubes at the bike shop
for the 700x2.1 Thunder Burts. It was a huge mess. The first tube went ok but I
guess I took too long on the second and and it kept clogging and spewing and
and what did go in oozed back out. I think I'd just as soon not use it again
but if the consensus of the group is that I must, then I will. So, which tough
tire with no sealant. Or convince me to use sealant.

[RBW] Re: Frustrated by RBW lack of inventory

2018-04-25 Thread Kieran J
I feel like if I actually lived in Walnut Creek, Riv HQ would be my
dedicated bike shop and I would also spend a lot of time hanging out there
too. From a mail-order company perspective, they just can't compete based
on their business model reality.

My old LBS in Toronto (shout-out to Urbane Cyclist!) almost always had the
stuff I needed, and it was on my way home from work. That immediate access
does a lot to keep the customer-shop relationship alive and healthy.

Impressive, Bill! Piecing together routes is a far more challenging endeavour
than I ever thought it would be. No matter the system of maps, roads or trails
differ in the real world. Part of the challenge I’ve run into is very few
people are true all terrain riders, happy to ride quiet roads and back trails.
But more and more “adventure routes” and races seem to make great routes in
areas I’ve attempted, but they figure it out better than I do. Or I’m hoping
they have, as I’m going to try some of their routes this year! Grin. Great job!
Over 20% grades are nothing to sneeze at!

[RBW] Frustrated by RBW lack of inventory

2018-04-25 Thread Deacon Patrick
I hear ya, Michael. Situational discernment. I view Rivendell as carrying long
term, “capital” bike goods. Yes, they have consumable goods (jthey are
necessary for bike builds, afterall), but as you point out, those are easily
gotten many places. With their recent refocusing after being over extended and
needing to work the rosary beads with a Hail Mary (I know Grant things it’s a
football term. Grin.), this seems even more the case. Frames? Silver shifter,
cranks, and surfers? Best biking bags in the world? Durable goods. If I place
an order for durable goods and they have the consumable goods I need too,
great, but cables, housing, tires, tubes, et al — if that’s all I need to go
LBS because that’s not Rivendell’s focus. WIth a family of six whom we’re
outfitting with bikes for their adult lives, we’re still in the durable goods
buying stage. Grin.

[RBW] Frustrated by RBW lack of inventory

2018-04-25 Thread Michael Hechmer
OK, so I'm no longer a big bike spender, but I do own three Riv bikes and
feel some loyalty to the company. At 73 all I need are replacement parts.
I haven't ordered anything from RBW in two years because every time I try
to put in an order half of what I need is out of stock.

It's finally Spring in Vt and this week I pulled all the bikes out of the
basement, cleaned & tuned them up. I made a list of the replacement parts
I needed, which was really very short - new HB tape and one tire. Of
course I can always use cleaner and lube so added them in, then threw in a
chain guard for the Rambouillet. Went to the RBW site and discovered that
the tire I wanted was out of stock, as was the chain guard. Not much point
in putting in an order for HB tape and two items I can buy anywhere

VO has the tire (650b X 38 skin wall) and HB tape, so once again no sale
for RBW.

to send payment (unless other arrangements are made). Then i will go-on to the

Berthoud 372 Panniers (Gray), $300
This is largest of the Berthoud panniers. It has a 49 liter capacity. There is
a large compartment and a smaller pocket on the outside. These expand with the
side-lacing so they store pretty flat when empty but expand and can hold quite
a bit--especially with the top loading. Note that these panniers are designed
to be used as lowrider fronts. Berthoud specifically states that they are for
front lowrider mounting. If you try to use them as a rear, you may have heel
clearance issues. Despite the warning from Berthoud i use these on a RBW
Hillborne + Nitto Big Back Rack with no heel clearance issues (size 11 feet).
The Nitto BBR has a really long top platform so i’m able to push the bag pretty
far back, YMMV on whether you can do the same. If you’re comparing this to
the current version of this bag, pay attention to the pictures of the retaining
system (i believe these are the RK style), i think Berthoud has updated them
recently. If you’re comparing to the ones at Compass--don’t, they have
Berthoud make their version of this bag with leather straps instead of the
camlocks for the retaining system, though the rest of the bag looks to be the
same.
As far as condition, there is some light wear on the leather trim and some
rubbing on the back of the bags. Some of the straps are starting to curl,
there are a couple spots where the piping is starting to wear slightly, the
only condition issue is that the previous owner wore through part of the
reflective material on one of the bag sides (perhaps from the aforementioned
heel clearance issue). My plan was to repair it with reflective tape but it
never bothered me enough to address it. I love the look of these bags (they
look great on my french postal inspired bike) but i just don’t use them enough.
Here’s a pic of them on my Hillborne, https://flic.kr/p/c2paNj

I also use a mac and don't need to 'switch to desktop', are you sure the
browser is not saving the mobile-version on loading that as default?

your second problem with bounced emails i can't comment on, i use reply
directly as well and tend not to have a problem.

and as an aside, the reality of the list is that certain FS items
(especially Compass) will just go super fast, so a lot of it is just luck.
and while it seems unfair, personally i use email responses to sell instead
of inside the thread itself. otherwise i then need to compare the thread
to emails and it just gets too messy for me.

If there is ever an item I am particularly interested in, I send the PM
(through the online, desktop, "google groups" interface) but also note in
the thread that I sent the PM and for the OP to let me know if that is not
received. No guarantees certainly but I don't think it is out of line from
a thread standpoint to do that. It also alerts others, at least
unofficially, that you are interested and "in line", something like that
anyway.

That said, technology can certainly fail, at least fail to work as we

[RBW] When requesting to contacted off list

2018-04-25 Thread 'Tim' via RBW Owners Bunch
I lost out on a set of Bon Jon tires trying to reply directly to the poster.
I've lost out on several items this way. If you're on a Mac, the only option
to reply directly to the poster is by switching to "Desktop", which then gives
you the option to reply directly. I've done this several times and I get an
email reply (always either several hours later or in my spam folder) that my
reply has been rejected. By then, someone has already bought the item. Yes, I
get the email digest, in which the posters entire email address is listed (even
on the desktop version, on a Mac or iPhone, the email address is only partial,
thus of no use) but by the time it comes, the item is usually sold. I guess my
point is that I will always have to reply on list to any for sale post, if I
hope to have a chance at the item. So please understand that I'm not ignoring
your request to be contacted offline because I'm a dick (although, undoubtedly
I am at times) it's because I want the item and can't get it any other way.

Peace,
Tim "now in Casa Grande, AZ and learning about goatheads" Kirch

I put a pic up in a post about an hour ago. I’m thinking the rear dropouts need

[RBW] Extreme Commuting--a checklist ride complete

2018-04-25 Thread Bill Lindsay

Back at the very beginning of my Rivendell career, in 2009, I was pretty
much strictly a roadie. My Hillborne and the idea of "country bike" opened
up my world in many ways. One of those ways was the idea of enjoying
taking the long way from A-to-B. Over that first year or so I hatched an
idea for my 40-mile commute from El Cerrito to Union City. Rather than
treat it as a hilly road ride with a couple dirt trail detours, I
contemplated doing it as a 25 mile mountain bike ride with a few road
connectors. I had most of the route in my head, but there were still
several trails that I needed to add but had never ridden. Now that I have
a cool GPS unit, I was able to build my route on RideWithGPS and upload it
to my device so I wouldn't get lost and wouldn't have to resort to the map
50 times.

Anyhow, here's my route, discreetly edited to begin at a starting point
close-by but not-too-close to my front door. RideWithGPS Extreme Commuting

I did the ride for the first time this morning, which felt like a cool
accomplishment, since I'd been thinking about it for several years. It was
~42 miles and about 4700 feet of climbing, and it was pretty freaking
hard. There were several pitches that my GPS assessed as >20% grade.
There were rocky, bumpy, rooty sections that made my BMC Monstercross feel
like serious underbiking. The undeniable highlight is that these mountain
bike trails are by definition car-free, and that was delightful. I might
decide to do the SFRandonneurs Marin Mountains 200k as a solo Permanent in
May, and this Extreme Commute route is a great training ride for that.

This was one of the 20% grades, which is hard to see in the photo. My four
finger salute was to celebrate passing 4,000 ft of climbing at this point.

So, make a plan, set a goal, see it through and celebrate

Bill Lindsay
El Cerrito CA

P.S. One of the reasons I was able to pedal up 20% grades was I just
installed my turkey vulture shifter kit from Analog Cycles, which allowed
me to run a Deore XT clutch rear derailer with Shimano 10sp indexed barcons
(on Thumbies). I was glad to have a 26x36 low gear.

Re: [RBW] Tucson Stolen Bike Alert

2018-04-25 Thread Coal Bee Rye Anne
Terribly sorry to hear that, Matt, but very glad you and your family are
ok. I have nothing to offer in terms of successful recovery but I do hope
you and your wife are reunited with your bikes. If not and you do pursue
the insurance route I do agree, as an insurance claims employee, that
Patrick has provided very valuable information and recommendations. I'll
add that although you should be reimbursed for current full retail
replacement cost this may also depend on your specific policy and coverage
so always refer to your written policy for details. Also don't be
surprised to hear the dreaded "D" word... depreciation. A standard
practice is for insurance carriers to withhold depreciation which is
reflected as a percentage of the full value based on age and wear/tear and
expected life span and they often only reimburse the withheld amount after
you have actually replaced the missing/damaged items and provided receipts
and documentation showing your final incurred costs. This should be
minimal for something like a 2+ year old bike that would last decades or
more but just be prepared to have something deducted from initial
settlement that may be recovered/reimbursed later after items are actually
replaced. It's annoying for everyone and is a process with a lot of
negativity associated with it but it's a result of the insurance market and
requirements varies state to state (example, in my home state is has to be
shown on estimates for everything but is only withheld when the total
exceeds a certain amount.)

As Patrick already noted, be thorough and having everything already noted
on the police report helps validate all items later being claimed through
insurance. Unfortunately, insurance fraud is a very real thing and makes
things even harder for honest people going through such difficult
situations like this. The more information and documentation you could
provide to the adjuster will make their job easier and a smoother process
for you in return. Not that making the adjusters job easier should be your
priority, but since they are the one's required to validate your costs and
prices based on the information provided it often becomes just a matter of
having appropriate documentation and proof readily available which makes
the investigation easier for everyone. This usually becomes more
problematic with specialty and niche items the average person or adjuster
may not be familiar with so providing not only original purchase details
but also providing your own sources for replacement could often be
helpful. Insurance companies all have pricing databases and sources for
generic items but a custom build from Rivendell, for example, would not
provide a match so a detailed and itemized build list just like you wrote
above but with all part prices and labor shown and a web link goes much
farther than if someone just listed something like "2 bikes = $5000" with
no other context. Your adjuster may have never heard of Rivendell
Bicycle Works and may very well be the kind of person that would never pay
more than couple hundred for a complete bicycle, so matching a price for
something like that becomes difficult unless they know exactly what it is
and where to find it, otherwise they may be at the mercy of whatever
database they are provided by their employer... or amazon which seems
to becoming the norm for online prices.

Best of luck and again, sorry to hear about this.

an existing frame? If so, what frame? If you’re going for the whole quickbeam
equivilant (6 tooth range, brake stays aligned) you may want to connect with
Grant and or have your builder connect. There are details involved there that
I’m sure Mark and Grant coordinated on behind the scenes. Caviate: I am not
running a rear brake (other than back pedaling), so that part wasn’t important
to me, but I believe Mark got that all lined up as well, I just haven’t tested
that. The rear canti posts are on there if I ever want to though.

With abandon,
Patrick

When I commute in a suit I use an old MB-3 with a similar motor/battery

Rim brakes work fine. No need for new wheels in my build.

Love my Hunquapillar more, though.

Sorry to hear about your bikes. I will do my best to keep an eye out.
Fortunately they are both very distinct bikes. I understand your pain,
having had 2 bikes stolen in Tucson. I agree with everyone's advice with
checking local bike stores. I would also advise posting a notice at BICAS.
Checking any pawn shops within a few miles of your house would be a good
idea. I believe that the Tucson Police Department holds an auction once or
twice a year to sell recovered bikes. Might be worth a look. Good Luck!

Matt,

I can't really offer any advice other than my sympathies, the bikes are
just things that can be replaced but the sense of security, trust in people
is much more difficult.

I would echo what Bob suggests, while we tend to see a Riv or Handsome and
know what they are there are plenty of folks who only see a retro bike with
no idea of their provenance/value, so definately share a picture with local
shops and get the word out to local groups or Coops so they can keep an eye
out for them.

2018-04-25 Thread Bob Lovejoy
Matt,

Really and truly sorry to hear of the break-in and theft. I have been
trying so hard to maintain some semblance of faith in people but that is
obviously not easy. I hope it all works out as well as possible.

In moments of weakness (for looking at bikes), I use SearchTempest to scan
Craiglist's from across the country. I know you will have much to do with
everything else but it might be worth trying at times.

https://www.searchtempest.com/

You can set how much distance from where you are to search. I run it in
Chrome, with the "Direct Results" option checked. I also had to tell
Chrome to allow the site to open multiple windows but it has worked well
for me. I am not sure how it would work if you found your bikes on a
different city's CL but a call to their police department would seem like
the next step.

I would also make sure as many of your local bikes shops as possible are
aware of the theft and have the info and hopefully pictures. Even if
someone buys it cheaply, not knowing the truth about it, the bike(s) could
end up in a shop for repair or whatever.

People here will be in the lookout. Let us know of any updates. Again,
sorry you are having to go through all of that.

[RBW] Re: Has anyone used trekking / butterfly bars on a Rivendell?

2018-04-25 Thread Coal Bee Rye Anne
I had not previously seen the Nitto variety but just checked 'em out and
yes, the Nitto B825AA seems to be a vast improvement on the overall shape
of the VO/Daija that I found lacking due to the straight and completely
flat rear grip section. I had thought an additional inward/upward curve
for the rear section would have made it much more useful and looks as
though the Nitto version has this exact feature. At 54cm wide the Nitto is
2cm narrower overall than the 56cm Daija model and I'd likely miss those
2cm, however. I found the wide sides going into the front curves the most
comfortable and useful position(s) which is why an Albastache may still be
in my future. I hope they work out well for you, Rene!

Re: [RBW] Has anyone used trekking / butterfly bars on a Rivendell?

2018-04-25 Thread Tim Gavin
Dave-

Trekking bars have a 22.2 mm grip diameter, and they use MTB controls (road
bars have a 23.8 mm grip diameter). That 22.2 diameter means the ends are
usually too small to insert bar-end shifters.

However, Nitto makes Albatross bars for Rivendell that are 22.2 AND fit
bar-end shifters.
So, though I doubt that any butterfly/trekking bar can fit bar-end
shifters, the Nitto 825 would be the most likely suspect to do so.

Also, I think bar-end shifters on a trekking bar would be weird and
un-ergonomic. Seems like a perfect application for thumb shifters.

[RBW] Re: Has anyone used trekking / butterfly bars on a Rivendell?

2018-04-25 Thread 'Clayton' via RBW Owners Bunch
Rene,

Again, thank you for the handlebar tape!

I ran trekkers for awhile on my Atlantis and took them off. Also, back in
the day (I also ran the OLD Scott AT3 bars on my mountain bike and liked
them better than the trekkers).

My issues with them, echo what others have said. No sweep, compromised
position and crappy access to the brake levers (I even designed 'L' shaped
brake levers for them and bar ends. I sold my design to Onza back in the
early nineties. They were a brief fad for awhile. Even Paul Components made
a version.) My default hand position on the trekkers was on the sides. The
close position was way too close and I was never happy with trying
different stem lengths. So they came off.

I have numbness in my left hand and have tried everything to get rid of it,
including three surgeries. It gets worse on the bike. The best reprieve
from pain and numbness I could muster from a zillion bar changes, was to
get my bars up. I run WTB Dirt Drops up high, where the bottom of the drops
are just slightly below the saddle, about where the top of most road bikes
bar are. This allows me to ride in the drops most of the time, and totally
sit up when my hand needs a break. My perfect handlebar for my numb hands,
would be carbon (for vibration absorption), shaped like the Noodle on top,
but with shorter ramps and drop, and the drops splayed out like most
adventure drop bars are.

I tried the adjustable Modolo trekking bars, and they were horrible, really
heavy. Nashbars were OK. Scott AT4's (no longer made) were too swoopy and
extreme. I have no experience with the Nitto bars, but I love Nitto, so go
with those! ;) I am hoping for the best for you, and hope the new bars
work out.

Carla, Mark only swapped out the verticals dropouts for the track style
Quickbeam dropouts. Had I been thinking it through better I would have also had
him remove the derailire cable guides and downtube shifting posts. But those
make good reminders of where he’s come from, just like all my oddities. Grin.

With abandon,

[RBW] Tucson Stolen Bike Alert

2018-04-25 Thread Bill Schairer
Maybe list the bikes on bikeindex.org. I had a Trek 720 stolen about a year
ago and it was suggested I list with them. I did. I also filed police report.
Sadly, I can’t report any good results but it was free, didn’t take much time,
can’t see that it hurts, and who knows...

[RBW] Re: Betty's an eBike Now

2018-04-25 Thread Joe Bernard
Yep yep, Chris, it's definitely a different and fun way to ride a bicycle. I
still have and ride non-assist bikes, but I love my eChev for shopping runs;
longer rides when I don't have all day to cover the mileage; or if I just feel
like getting my speed on. And they're invaluable if you have an injury or
disability which limits your pedaling strength.

[RBW] Re: Betty's an eBike Now

2018-04-25 Thread 'Chris Lampe 2' via RBW Owners Bunch
I consider myself to be fairly traditional in my bike tastes and part of
the appeal of bicycling is the physical exertion involved in spirited
riding. Having said that, I stepped into a bike shop last year and the
owner offered me a test ride on an electric assist bike and I can honestly
say that it was the most fun I've had on a bike since childhood. I have
every intention of someday adding an e-bike to my stable.

[RBW] Has anyone used trekking / butterfly bars on a Rivendell?

2018-04-25 Thread Garth
Of all the butterfly I have seen, and there are many, the Nitto seems the only
one that I would try as it is the only ergonmically designed one for all hand
positions. All the others have the open ends straight across 90 degrees and 0
degrees flat, which is not natural at all. Hold a straight bar with both hands
shoulder width apart, it just does not feel natural, the wrists are not like
that.

I would also be concerned with knee clearance while standing, but again the
Nitto having some upward rise in the ends may be enough, it depends on each
rider and their setup and body shape.

Thanks for the posting the idea and your experience Rene ☺

The markers and signage about the construction of the canals and ability to

pretty neat.
Very unexpected and fun escape. Balanced my trips into NYC with my bike on

Re: [RBW] Has anyone used trekking / butterfly bars on a Rivendell?

2018-04-25 Thread Coal Bee Rye Anne
I have tried the VO/Daija version on three different bikes but not yet on my
only Riv(Clem H.). Like Ken suggested I found that stem length needed to be
chosen to optimize one grip area, which puts the others in less desirable
territory, or you may end up compromising on all the grip areas only to find
you are not happy with any of them. I tried them both with mtb levers/shifters
on the flat rearward section and with road levers i. The curve a la
moustache/Albastache and came to prefer the latter. The last frame I tried
them was a single speed it so I had no shifter location to address and ended up
rarely using the rear/flats once I settled on a stem to optimize the sides and
front curves so I essentially used them as a moustache bar and found that I hit
my knees on the rear flats during out of saddle climbs more than I used them as
grips while cruising so I eventually replaced with a moustache anyway. I also
found the rear inner flats a bit too narrow for my liking. You may have better
luck than I depending on top tube length and your preferred grip section and
stem lengths. The best thing about the bar is that there is no right or wrong
way to install them. You could flip/rotate and put the narrow flats out front
with rise instead of drop but I never tried that once I found I preferred the
moustache with drop bar lever type setup.

Re: [RBW] Tucson Stolen Bike Alert

2018-04-25 Thread Patrick Moore
Very sorry to hear about that.

Ex -- happily ex -- insurance agent. Spend the time to put together a (1)
comprehensive and (2) detailed list of all the things taken; a big hassle,
but worth it. Excel is very good for this. Include makes, models, when and
where bought (a bit of extrapolation is perfectly in order if you don't
remember the exact date and place), and (I hope you have replacement
coverage) full *retail replacement* cost. For example, I paid IIRC $1,900
for my Joe Starck custom in 1999, but I'd put in the current $3,500 plus
the cost of the recent Chauncey Matthews alterations.

You've got a very good start on the descriptions of the Cheviot and
Handsome. It's worth taking a few days off from work to have the time to do
this thoroughly; see if you can add lost wages to your claim; can't say
that they'll pay, but it's worth the attempt. And add "under loss of use"
as well as the cost of any expenses incurred in replacing stuff. It's the
opposite of taxes: you are legally bound to pay only the minimum tax
legally required of you; so with claims: you are legally entitled to any
and all money required to restore all the you've lost, and the further
expenses that you've incurred as a result of the loss -- basically, what it
costs to restore you and yours to the *status quo ante.*

Give this to the police as well as to your insurer; the police won't find
your stuff, probably, but if the list is part of the police report, just a
bit more weight on your insurer to cooperate.

Almost 30 years ago, my slightly upper middle class mountain bike with
upgrades was stolen, along with my tool box, from a shed in the backyard. I
detailed *everything,* down to each individual wrench, and got it all
covered, full replacement, retail, with no hassle at all.

And: this shows that spending a bit more premium for a company with good
claims reputation is worth the small additional premium. It has been close
to 10 years, but in my day: The Hartford and Met Life were particularly
reputable.

Also, get a dog.

[RBW] Tucson Stolen Bike Alert

2018-04-25 Thread Matt Rhodes
Hi all,

I'm saddened to report that my house was burglarized today. The thieves
broke in through a window, turned the house inside out and made off with
most all of the valuables, including two cherished bicycles. I'm posting
here to (1) ask all Tucsonans in the group to keep an eye out for these
bikes, and (2) ask all group members for any advice that might help my wife
and I retrieve them.

My bike is a 60cm Cheviot, in the no-longer-available-on-Chevs green
metallic color currently available on some Clems. I took delivery of it in
2014 and have ridden it more or less daily since then. Build details:

- Rich-built 700c wheelset with silver Deore hubs laced to 36h Velocity
Dyads, wearing 50mm Schwalbe Big Bens
- Pletscher single-leg kickstand
- SKS P50 fenders, with holes for flaps and a rear fender-mounted light
- Sugino XD2 wide/low 46t/20t crankset, 170mm, with reflective tape on the
crank arms
- MKS sneaker pedals
- Deore rear mech, Claris front mech
- Tektro R559 brakes
- Nitto SP60 seatpost
- Brooks B17 select, wonderfully broken-in after 3.5 years of riding
- Nitto Choco-moose bars
- Tektro mtb levers, black body with silver levers
- Silver bar-end shifters
- Nitto Mark's rack, two struts, with Wald 137 basket secured via zip-ties
- Pletscher rear aka Clem rack
- older (c. 2014) Saddlesack Large, tan canvas with brown leather accents

I haven't seen another green Chev (or any other Chev, for that matter) in
Tucson since I moved here ~2.5 years ago. I also have the original business
card from Riv mechanic Mark Abele with the order number and the frame's
serial number, and I know its beausage fingerprint inside and out.

My wife's bike is a 56cm Handsome XOXO (homage to Bridgestone XO-1), orange
with branding similar to that on the XO-1. She took delivery of it this
past February after purchasing it from 718 Cyclery in Brooklyn via eBay.
Build details:

- 26" wheelset, black Deore rear hub and silver Shimano dyno front hub
laced to Sun Rhyno Lytes (or Alex DM24s...can't remember), wearing Schwalbe
Big Apples
- B Eyc T Senso Plus dyno headlight
- dyno rear light (I forget which model...)
- Sugino triple crankset
- black plastic BMX pedals
- Deore XT rear mech, Shimano front mech (again, I forget which model...)
- silver Shimano CX50 cantilevers
- brown Brooks B17
- Nitto Tallux stem
- Nitto (I think?) drop bars wrapped in brown Salsa (I think?) foam tape
- Shimano Tiagra road levers
- Shimano bar-end shifters

Although my wife only had the bike for a few months, neither of us have
noticed any other XOXOs around Tucson. Not sure about its serial number at
the moment, but we might be able to sort that out by getting in touch with
718.

Big picture: it could have been much, much worse, and my wife and I are
thankful that it wasn't. The police have been helpful so far, and we'll
learn more tomorrow about what else they might be able to do. While I'm
pretty familiar with the LBS scene in Tucson, I have no idea what the
crooks might do with our bikes. This is our first time dealing with bike
theft, so any insights or advice would be hugely appreciated!

Thanks for reading this far, and thanks in advance for any tips you might
be able to provide.

- Matt
