The real (for me) reason for 31.8 is less bar slip. The more sweep the bar has
and the rougher the riding is the greater the benefit of 31.8. Albatross will
slip for me in certain situation, my 31.8 Jones stay put no matter what.

[RBW] Re: 26.0 vs 31.8

2018-05-15 Thread Benz, Sunnyvale, CA
I don't believe 25.4/26.0mm handlebars will become obsolete, especially if
Nitto continues to survive and thrive. Actually, even if everyone
discontinued 25.4/26.0mm handlebars today, there is probably enough stock
flowing through the system to supply us retro-grouches for decades simply
because of the low niche demand. :) Personally, I don't prefer the
aesthetics of the fat 31.8mm center section on steel-framed bikes. They
look out of place with the ~27.2mm seatposts and ~28.6mm main tubes.

[RBW] Re: 26.0 vs 31.8

2018-05-15 Thread Neil Doran
No idea if 26.0 is going away, but depending on what you want, 31.8 may
have way better options. I wanted Salsa bars, so had to go with new 31.8
stem. I don't notice a functional difference, other than the salsa setup
feels flexier than the noodle that preceded it.

You could always buy the 31.8 and shim as needed for max flexibility.

That 0/30 degree extension is interesting...I suppose it will basically
match the reach of your atlantis with trad stem and swept bars?

Velo Orange also has a quill stem with removable faceplate, that is what I
went with at about 80 clams. I like it.

[RBW] Re: 26.0 vs 31.8

2018-05-15 Thread Bill Lindsay
Are there reasons for going 31.8?

yes:

-because you feel like it
-because you think you are going to bend a 26.0 bar
-because the bars you want to try only come in 31.8

will 26.0 bars be obsolete soon?

no

[RBW] Re: FS: Shifter Mounts (BE, Top-Mount)

2018-05-15 Thread Minh
Upon closer inspection these Shimano BE pods are slightly different from
the Riv ones, these have an extra bump on them (see here
https://photos.app.goo.gl/FW3YnEnRW2oVndP83). So easy option is to get the
Shimano washers and use shimano shifters.

if you want to use non-shimano shifters and the square washers, you'll need
to spend some time filing off the bump.

[RBW] Re: WTTry: MKS Toe clips and leather straps

2018-05-15 Thread Deacon Patrick
Lester, thank you. Private reply sent.

Clayton, I always love seeing your handiwork. Excellent. Several questions: is
another way to describe “binding,” “twisting”? Yes, I can see how the straps
need to be stiff and open and not bind/twist for easy in/out.

My two biggest concerns with the Hold Fast straps are 1) that my foot, even in
the touring pedals, wedges in snug to the point that pre-loosening is required
prior to easy exit and 2) fraying for trail abrasion. A toe clip takes care of
#1, and I think the leather straps would tuck in well and avoid most trail
abrasion. Hoping that works!

Thanks again all!

With abandon,
Patrick

IRD Top Shifter Mounts Only: $37

Shimano BarEnd Pods Only w/ washers: $22

Shimano BarEnd Pods No washers: $18

Shimano Barend Pods Only w/washers:

The washers have tabs, which may or may not work with your shifters, worst
case you can grind off the tabs

Shimano Barend Pods No washers:

Either order some regular square washers from Riv to use non-shimano
shifters OR

Order some Shimano washers to run shimano shifters (either from Riv, or i
can give you the Shimano part-number to order from your LBS)

IRD Top Shifter Mounts Only:

Used, sized for roadbars (25.4) so you will need shims to mount these to
22.2 bars (not included)

as-is these would work with non Shimano shifters (Shimano shifters need a
special washer, which Riv sell). I mounted a set of Suntour DT shifters,
right side was fine but left side was a little loose--would need an
additional washer/shim. You may not have that problem but FYI.

[RBW] 2015 60 cm Cheviot

2018-05-15 Thread CoalTrain
2015 60cm Cheviot. I purchased this new from Riv. That years run had middle
seat stays that were closer to the cassette then usual so Riv shaved away some
material so as not to rub, you can see their expert work in a pic below. There
are 3 stickers that can be removed but I don’t have adhesive remover. The frame
has about 130 miles on it and has the typical wear you’d expect from that. I
had a rear nitto long stay rack on it at one point so the brazeons have that
typical use appearance. Here is what you’re getting:

Kalloy post
Altus rear derailleur
Some shimano front derailleur
Albatross bars, steel i think
Shimano brake levers
Cheap thump shifters
100 or 110 nitto stem
Tektrro brakes

$1100 for local pick up in St Louis...preferred
More I need to ship

Got mine!

At first glance, it was smaller than expected. After the rather large
Rivendell Readers and previous catalog, I did not even realize I got a
catalog until I opened the envelope. This one is smaller than even the
classic Bridgestone catalogs. Size is not correlated to quality, and I know
Grant & co probably are not looking for validation, but this catalog is
quite fun to browse and inspect. My only complaint is that it's too short –
I would have loved to remain in the realm of the elves for just a few more
pages.

[RBW] Re: Extreme Commuting--a checklist ride complete

2018-05-15 Thread Bill Lindsay
Justin asked: "How do I do a commute like this to my current job as a stay
at home dad? "

I doubt he meant it sincerely, but every smart aleck joke question has a
kernel of truth or sincerity in it. So I'll answer as if Justin was
sincerely asking.

I think you should volunteer for Oakland Composite Mountain Bike Racing.
They have an incredible group of kids riding for them, and they do really
great work, particularly servicing minority riders, girls, and economically
challenged high schoolers in Oakland. It's one of the best ways I know of
to get Oakland teens outdoors and enjoying the spectacular public spaces
available in the hills above Oakland. Ride with them once or twice a week,
and they will beat your ass into shape faster than you can say "un-Racer".
Working withe El Cerrito High School has been a true fountain-of-youth
experience for me both physically and emotionally. Short, intense,
sometimes unpleasantly difficult mountain bike rides are one of the more
efficient ways to get a TON of fitness out of VERY limited exercise time.
Committing to a team like that is a way to force discipline on yourself
that normally might take joining a gym, or some other lame self-imposed and
costly arrangement.

Ha! So funny. I dig that flexibility.

Other catalog topic, the models: The last paragraph on p. 4 sort of
addresses the who-where of making bikes, but is intentionally vague, since
the American Homers, Atlantises, Hunqapillars, and Rodeos might have
changing futures. We're just working out some things, and in the meantime
it didn't make sense to say anything declaratively or waste page space
being so iffy.

[RBW] Re: WTTry: MKS Toe clips and leather straps

2018-05-15 Thread 'Clayton' via RBW Owners Bunch

My Campy Euclids and Deore XT pedals with homemade laminated straps and
homemade buckle pads. Both are important. I found that laminating or
buying a laminated strap makes an important safety feature. The leather
moulds to your foot, and the stiff lamination holds the opening open. The
thick buckle pad kicks the strap away from the side of your shoe slightly,
to help prevent binding. I highly recommend not using a one strap opening
toeclip. The strap binds on your foot. Use a mountain clip with two strap
'prongs'. It keeps the opening open, and provides much safer release as the
strap is less likely to bind on your foot. I don't use toe clips anymore,
but in twenty years of use, I rarely had my foot stuck in the pedal. I used
clipless for a couple of years and went back to toe clips because I loved
the art of using toe clips. Ned Overend blew my mind at a race I was at
back in the day. He flicked the pedal with his toe hard, and while spinning
fast, slipped his foot in. It is an art, and he is the master. I practiced
and practiced, but could never hit the opening like he could. I miss using
them...sometimes. It is more connecting to the earth than clipless.
It is like slipping your foot into stirrups, rather than hi tech ski
bindings. They are Rivendellian.

I have used a cork from a wine bottle, cut down a bit and with a piece of
thin wire run through it (and through the leather strap) to help it stay in

Re: [RBW] Saddle Sack Med and Leg Strike

2018-05-15 Thread Tim Gavin
I've seen folks use various tube-shaped items as the standoff: pvc pipe,
garden hose, any random strap, where Acorn uses a leather "cuff".

Since the bag-to-seatpost strap is too short with the standoff, I use an
old toe strap (from strap and clip pedals) to replace it.

Longer straps at the saddle plus mounting the front strap to the rack
instead of seatpost should help. Another solution if you keep the bag on
the bike all the time is to mount the bottom to the rack with zipties,
skipping the the saddle mounting altogether.

The final (expensive) solution is the Nitto saddle-rail quick-release
which will hang the bag further back from the saddle. The benefit here is
it's very easy to pop it off the bike to run into the store.
