[RBW] Custom bike report

2018-08-10 Thread Lum Gim Fong
Congrats on the great bike and rides!!!
You could try DT shifting to save a little weight, too, and get quicker/crisper
shifts.
Took me two attenpts on two different bikes but on the Rambouillet it’s second
nature now and a cleaner look also.

Tip: don’t ever shift a DT lever while your thumb rests on the TT- you can
shoot the bike right out from under you if you press down with too much weight
on the TT with your thumb while fingering shifter.
Use full fist or thumb/forefinger combo on lever.

Double Tip: Use Silver DT shifters on the DT bosses. They are long levers and
make it easy to grab them.

Triple tip: I think the silver barend levers can work on your DT bosses with
the stop ring. Call Mark at RBW and he can tell you how.

The so cal all rounder group, SCAR, will have lots of good info on Long Beach
area rides. I’ve never made it to one of their rides but I’ve ripped off their
routes one or two times after the fact. You’ll be close to the beach and Irvine
hills, and a train ride away from some great trails. You can also ride the
river bike path up to LA. It has nice and not nice sections, but you’ll see
more of the la river than most ever do. As far as theft goes, it’s Southern
California, so fairly bad. Bring a good lock.

[RBW] Re: Long(er) fender daruma bolts for basket/rack on Quickbeam

2018-08-10 Thread 'Tom Matchak' via RBW Owners Bunch
May I suggest that you consider the PlugNut fender mount, in stock now at
the Velo Lumino webstore . This
little nugget creates a secure M5 threaded boss inside the steerer tube,
which is flush with the underside of the fork crown. It comes with an M5
bolt that is the length for mounting your fender, but you can obtain a
longer M5 bolt at your local hardware store if you need to stack other
stays (rack or basket) onto that anchor point.

While the PlugNut was designed for maximizing tire-to-fender clearance in
tight situations, adding a few mm of metal between fender and crown should
be fine. In fact, you might be able to swap out the included thick leather
washer and add your other stays without needing a longer bolt.

>From the Velo Lumino product page, you can download the PlugNut
installation instructions, which define the steerer tube conditions that
are required for a proper application. Please read this before you purchase
the PlugNut.

Thanks for reading, and I'd be happy to answer any questions.

(Disclosure: I have a commercial interest in the PlugNut fender mount.)

Cheers,

My personal favorite rack for my basketed Quickbeam is the Nitto M-12, that

[RBW] For Sale: Gilles Berthoud GB 1500 Panniers-Black

2018-08-10 Thread Steve Butcher
I purchased this set of Berthoud GB 1500 panniers from the Granary a few
weeks ago. They are brand new and unused. I simply unpacked them,
attached them to the rack, then put them away in the box in which they were
shipped. I am selling them because I've concluded I will just use some of
my other panniers; so the Berthouds are just redundant. They are very
well made and have the clever R attachment brackets. $250.00 shipped
CONUS. At this price, I am just trying to recover the cost of the bags and
shipping. This is considerably less cost than many of the on-line dealers
I have researched. My phone battery died so I do not currently have photos
to share but would be happy to e-mail some photos if needed. Please send
me a private message with questions. PayPal preferred. Thanks.

[RBW] Long(er) fender daruma bolts for basket/rack on Quickbeam

2018-08-10 Thread Tully Lanter
I've got a gorgeous green Quickbeam sitting on the patio, recently arrived
from a fellow RBW member, ready to roll but for a basket and rack.

Unfortunately there's just one eyelet front and rear, and mounting anything
to QR axles seems imprudent, if even possible.

The fenders (Berthoud stainless) are currently in these

 clever
daruma bolts, which are too short for the basket and rack stays (about 2mm
and 4mm wide, respectively). Longer daruma bolts seem like the most elegant
solution, but may not exist. Anyone know where to look?

If something like the SKS clips

 were
compatible with Berthoud stays, that might be even better. I considered
good ol' P-clamps but am concerned (paranoid?) about mounting loads where a
frame wasn't quite designed for it.

[RBW] Re: Has anyone installed Guidonnet style levers on Choco's?

2018-08-10 Thread Jeremy Till
Earlier this year I was in a friend's bike shop, where he deals mainly in
used bikes and parts with a bobbish flavor. He had a pair of late 80's or
early 90's mountain bike levers, maybe also made by Dia-Compe, with a
guidonnet-style bend in them, that had been intended to allow the use of
brakes while riding on bar-ends. They were significantly beefier than
Guidonnet levers and immediately got me thinking along these lines.
Unfortunately I think the clamp was intended for flat bars and would be too
wide to fit around the curves of a Choco or Albatross, and the angle of the
bend was more acute, to follow bar-ends which generally angled in.

I also think Paul Components, in their early days, made some lever
extenders for a similar purpose. Maybe an alternative?

Lum, I'm pretty sure that Cyclofiend Jim is the moderator. When I view this

were all originated by Jim. Maybe you will have better luck reaching out
directly. I only say this because recently Jim mentioned being away from the

lots of posts to delete.)

[RBW] FS: Keven's Bag

2018-08-10 Thread 'Eric Norris' via RBW Owners Bunch
Looking through my closet and found this … Didn’t remember that I had it! Not
currently on a bike and not likely to be, so off it goes. The classic Keven
bag—holds a lot in a nice, square-ish shape that tucks nicely under the seat
and won’t hit your legs. Genuine Baggins Bag quality, made of thick canvas and
leather.

Nice condition—a bit of patina, but no tears or damage. Includes all of the
straps.

$65 shipped in the CONUS.

[RBW] FS: Brooks Saddle Bag

2018-08-10 Thread 'Eric Norris' via RBW Owners Bunch
I ended up with two of these, so one has to go … Nice Brooks bag in luxurious
“pleather” with leather trim. Very good condition with the exception of one
wear mark that will be mostly hidden when it’s on your bike and a few minor
tears in the lining on the inside (see the photos).

Works as a handlebar bag *or* a seat bag. If used on the seat, it will benefit
from a holder or stabilizer to keep it from swaying.

These went for about $150 new—this one can be yours for $60 shipped in the
CONUS.

[RBW] Re: Has anyone installed Guidonnet style levers on Choco's?

2018-08-10 Thread 'Eamon Nordquist' via RBW Owners Bunch
Similar feelings here. I also had a set mounted on VO Porteur bars. I found
that if you grabbed the curved end portion hard in an emergency braking
situation, the levers could rotate on the bars, causing the lever to bottom
out against the bars. This led to a very scary near crash for me. I
couldn't seem to tighten the band clamp enough to make them feel safe and
secure to me.

[RBW] Re: FS: 53 Bleriot

2018-08-10 Thread Lum Gim Fong
I think I was confusing people with the old pics and such from the first
post. So here are the specific build specs of the complete bike for sale
with pricing.
This is a 53c frame size Bleriot. Sat in box until 3 years ago when I
bought it new in box from PJW cycles and built up by College Park Bikes,
Maryland, a former Rivendell dealer.
Bike has less than 3,000 miles on it and is in excellent condition and
ready to ride. Silky smooth drivetrain. Garage kept. Ridden lovingly.

I would be open to excluding components you don't want/need. I also have
Boscos and Tektro levers for the Boscos I could switch out for the Noodles
and Levers pictured.
Paypal and we split boxing/shipping. Or, if you are local to Maryland, we
can meet up to deliver in person.
Thanks, everyone! Sorry for any confusion, friends!

For $1150 complete bike includes:

Brakes – Tektro R559 Allen Bolt

Brake Levers – Shimano BL-R400

Chain – SRAM PC830 8-speed

Crankset – Sugino XD600 Triple Crank. 26-36-46 toothcount. 170mm
Crankarms.

Front Derailer – Microshift The sticker on it says “FD-R539 9-speed Triple
52-42-30”

Rear Derailer – SunXCD long cage SXRD34M - silver

Handlebars – 41cm (“410”) NITTO Noodle

Shifters – Rivendell Silver Bar End Shifters

Stem – 6cm/22.2/26.0 clamp Technomic Deluxe.

Tubes – Schwalbe SV12 650b Inner Tubes

Seatpost – Kalloy Uno, cut down to 240mm length by me from 350mm length. I
used a pipe cutter and finished with steel wool. Boeshielded the
bottom inch and cut end and greased post heavily before installing.

Bottom Bracket –Shimano square taper

Headset – Velo Orange

Wheelset – Front: Velocity Synergy 36 hole 650b rim/Velocity hub Rear:
Synergy rim/Velocity hub

Tires – Compass Loup Loup Pass 650b x 38mm

Cassette – Shimano 7-speed HG50 13-30 tooth (13-15-17-20-23-26-30) I used a
4.5mm spacer to take up the extra space on the freehub that is left from
not using an 8-speed cassette. I hand filed the spacer so it would clear
the rivets on the back of the cogs. No spacer necessary for 8+ speed
cassettes on this freehub.

Pedals – MKS Touring Pedals

Bar Tape –Brooks microfiber bartape – honey.

Add items below to the above complete bike and price is $1450:

Decaleur – Compass/Gran Bois/Nitto for NITTO Pearl stems, includes crossbar
pins bag mount piece.

Fenders - Honjo H50 hammered aluminum fenders

Rack - Velo Orange Randonneur front rack.

Bike does not include bottle cages or tailight. I need them. :)

the results .

Charlie -- I have a Rohloff on my Riv Bombadil. You're welcome to ride it --
happy to take it up to your place for you. I love it -- it's everything that's
advertised. The setup took some finagling, but it's rock solid once
successfully installed. Needs a chain tensioner, obviously, with the vertical
dropout on the Bombadil. I used a Paul Melvin tensioner, and it works great.
Here's a pic:

I won't be back in Wilmington for a month or so, but happy to hook up then. Tom

[RBW] Re: Do you have a ROHLOFF hub on your bike ?

2018-08-10 Thread Tom Allingham
Charlie -- I have a Rohloff on my Riv Bombadil. You're welcome to ride it
-- happy to take it up to your place for you. I love it -- it's everything
that's advertised. The setup took some finagling, but it's rock solid once
successfully installed. Needs a chain tensioner, obviously, with the
vertical dropout on the Bombadil. I used a Paul Melvin tensioner, and it
works great. Here's a pic:

I won't be back in Wilmington for a month or so, but happy to hook up then.

[RBW] Re: FS: 53 Bleriot

2018-08-10 Thread Lum Gim Fong
Just a note on sizing:
I am 5’8”
82 PBH
I also fit 54 Ram
52 Hillborne
55Bleriot
Just for sizing reference if that helps.
The short 6cm stem extension I have is because I have a shorter reach than most
(I think) and like my bars close.

[RBW] Re: A four hour (over two days) ride on the Great Allegheny Passage

2018-08-10 Thread ascpgh
I'm glad you had a great trip. Wasn't it fantastic how those little falls
created small cool pockets, so inviting on a hot day? So many I couldn't
stop at each and believe I could reach my destination before dark.

Part of the treasure of this trail is the access and ability to pick and
choose your route to serve your interests and intent along its path. It's
humbling to have this nearly out of my front door.

Congrats on all those long rides! All the more gratifying doing it on a bike
that performs so well and that you had so much to do with spec-ing out.

Thanks for sharing!
