[RBW] FS: levers + Nitto bars; WTB: brakes + dyno wheel + lights

2018-09-10 Thread Tully Lanter
A few things to unload and others to pick up. First, for sale:

- Nitto Noodle bars, 46cm. Came with my Quickbeam, and they're nice, but not
upright enough. $35 + shipping.
- Nitto Albastache bars. Recently purchased used, also nice, but still not
upright enough. $40 + shipping.
- Cane Creek(?) aero brake levers with black hoods. Much older but work well
and feel good. Just switched to inverse levers. $15 + shipping.

Will update with photos next chance I get. Would guess at most $15 to ship the
bars in the lower 48 and $5 for the levers.

Meanwhile, I'd love to pick up:

- Cantilever brakes, preferably a pair, but I only urgently need one for the
rear.
- A front wheel with a 700c, QR, 6V3W dynamo hub and ample braking surface
left. Compatible front and rear lights are definitely of interest, too!

Re: [RBW] Front vs. rear loads for AHH

2018-09-10 Thread Toshi Takeuchi
I personally use a Nitto big rear rack with panniers, but with only 10 lbs,
you can also use a larger size saddle sack with a small rack as a support.
I also have a Mark's rack up front with a front bag. It should do fine
with a basket and 10 lbs, but yeah, the rear rack would handle better...

Re: [RBW] Spencer’s Trousers Amazing Adventure Cycling Breeks Initial Impressions

2018-09-10 Thread Patrick Moore
This is very interesting. I've been pursuing the perfect cycling pants for
a while now, and while I've found the perfect (at least, 98.642% perfect)
shorts in the Rapha Randonee short or whatever it is called, I've still not
found the ideal cool weather pants.

1. How involved and convenient is the fitting and ordering process?

2. Are yours long enough in the leg to be cinched tight under the knee and
still give enough room for squatting?

3. How abrasion resistant and generally sturdy is the fabric? For example,
if you fall over slowly a couple of times, or slide it aggressively through
brush, is it likely to remain undamaged?

4. How long from initial order to delivery?

5. Can you post a photo of you wearing yours cinched under the knee? (You
can omit you from belt up if you like, tho' you do have a winsome face.)

Thanks. I look forward to longer-term reviews

Re: [RBW] Re: PRICE REDUCTION 60 cm Quickbeam

2018-09-10 Thread Philip Williamson
I think it’s a reasonable price, which may require the interest of a reasonable
person. Seriously, that does seem to be the ballpark Quickbeams play in. Much
less and people around here start speculating “what’s wrong with it?”

I don’t know if you cross posted to the BOB list, but I think it’s a bigger
list, and more skewed toward that vintage of Rivendell. $1300 sales/purchases
can take some time, especially for a ‘niche’ bike. Plus there are a couple
other QBs or Simpleones on the market now, creating the perception that there’s
no rush to buy.

My Quickbeam is set up for commuting, but in the past I used it for 25-40 mi
road rides, Oregon logging roads, and... commuting. It has a silver Paul
single-sided silver rear wheel, a SON klassik front, and a matching Paul front
wheel I’ve never actually used; surly dingle 17/21 cog and Dura-Ace square
taper cranks with 39/44 rings. CX50 brakes, Ultegra gray levers, Nitto WTB dirt
drops, Salsa steel stem painted to match the bike. 52mm Zeppein fenders also
painted to match the bike, 38mm Vittoria Hypers. VP-001 pedals. Brooks all
weather saddle. Original seatpost and headset. I’d have to pull the BB, but I
assume Shimano. You know - the usual stuff!

Thanks Patrick for the initial review.
I have been looking to replace my nylon cycling pants. This could be an
excellent alternative.

I'm finding the three S's troublesome, and the lack of a D, an R or an M
rules out a lot of things. The only dirt or earth variant I can think of
is SOIL, but they already played with SOIL in the BLAHG, so that's probably
out, like BOWELS.

[RBW] Re: Front vs. rear loads for AHH

2018-09-10 Thread Lum Gim Fong
Front loads make my Bleriot and Rambouillet wobbly up front.
I rode a couple years with front rack and Berthoud bag but now that I have
had no front loads for a while, having returned to a front rack and load on
my Rambouilet, I don't like it anymore. It was fine when I was enthusiastic
about it and easy enough to handle but now just feels dangerously floppy on
the front wheel.

Bike handles way better with a seat bag.

[RBW] Re: Not so permanent Basket + Rack

2018-09-10 Thread Surlyprof
Vincent,

I've avoided a permanent basket mounting with a John's Irish
strap.
https://www.flickr.com/photos/129545862@N03/16159037984/in/dateposted-public/
This is the way I used to strap it to the front rack. Now I attach it the
same way but cross the strap underneath between the basket and fender. It
seems to hold it a little more snug since all the forces are pulling in on
the rack. I'd like to work out a quick release attachment like Clayton
worked out but this has been working well enough for my needs and it's easy
enough to put on and take off.

Hope that helps.

[RBW] Spencer’s Trousers Amazing Adventure Cycling Breeks Initial Impressions

2018-09-10 Thread 'Deacon Patrick' via RBW Owners Bunch
I’ll get around to doing a medium term review with photos etc on my blog, but
wanted to give initial impressions of my newly arrived bespoke amazing tweed
adventure cycling breeks by Spencer’s Trousers of Yorkshire (not to be confused
with England. Grin.).

Wow! Without the least bit of hyperbole, these are the best fitting
pants/shorts/breeks I’ve ever put on. They look sharp just standing, have
plenty of room to freely move, squat, kneel, ride, et al, all while fitting my
waist so not belt is required (but they put on wider than usual 1.5” loops for
my belt/knife). My wife, though she knows the cost ($200, tweed bespoke w/
shipping), immediately said “We need to get you more of those!” Yeah, I need
all the help I can get, and these help. Evidently a lot. Grin.

I just rode an initial ride in 80˚F and these breathed beautifully and didn’t
feel too warm even on a climb with direct sun, moving slowly and no breeze.
We’ll see as I end up sitting around in hot weather, presuming we get some
still. Still, riding they felt much better than most nylon MTB breeks I’ve been
using (which fit my like a garbage bag held on with a belt to give room to
move), and as good as Compass’ knickers (snicker snicker), which I had other
issues with (pilling nylon being the deal breaker, both pairs, and that’s now
considered “normal wear”). Will these work in the height of summer? Possibly
passably, and certainly bikepacking in the highlands, but they will definitely
work for fall, winter, and spring, which around here is 11 months of the year.
Grin.

I washed them (hand wash, cold, with Eucla-something wool wash, no rinse) and
am their drying rack as I speak. I’m impressed with how quickly these dry. Must
be a tight spin on the tweed yarns to not let in too much moisture! That bodes
beautifully for wet and cold weather to come. Grin.

https://www.spencers-trousers.com/

Their site is light on photos, which is frustrating. The breeks came with a
nice brochure that would have been helpful in PDF form on the site. I got
velcro knee closure, 2 back pockets with flaps, and requested extra room in the
hips by 2” and extra length even from cycling breeks for “floor living”
positions of squatting, kneeling, cross legged, etc, which really challenge off
the rack pants/breeks). Anyway, their instagram site has more photos:

With abandon,
Patrick

[RBW] Re: Front vs. rear loads for AHH

2018-09-10 Thread blakcloud

Five pages on using or not using a front rack with baskets.
https://groups.google.com/forum/?hl=en#!topic/rbw-owners-bunch/m3Y3EdRhxv4%5B1-25%5D

On my Riv I started with a porteur rack and basket. Seemed like overkill,
so I switched out to a Mark's rack and basket. Then I switched out to the
smaller basket. Every time there was an improvement in handling, because I
wasn't loading it as much. This summer I took the basket off and it won't
return anytime soon. I may love the convenience but it does affect the

I do know a front basket won't be returning at least for a while.

[RBW] Re: Front vs. rear loads for AHH

2018-09-10 Thread Drw
I have a front basket on all my bikes, but I don’t use them for regular/all the
time loads because I agree that it makes steering less than ideal. I leave them
on the bike for picking up food or other random things. As soon as I take one
off a bike, the next ride I go on is always the one where I find something I
want to take home that won’t fit in a small saddlebag.

[RBW] Front vs. rear loads for AHH

2018-09-10 Thread John G.
+1 to Joe’s comment. I hated the way my Atlantis handled with a front load
above the wheel. It’s much nicer with a rear load, or low riding front
panniers. My point of comparison is my Crust Lightning Bolt, which is a delight
with a front load.

To be completely honest, I think the need for carrying more than 2-3 lbs of
stuff up front on rides shorter than 300k is grossly exaggerated. Taking a
quick brake to pull a banana nut muffin out of your saddlebag is hardly a
massive constraint on most types of rides.

That being said, I did buy a low trail bike so that I could enjoy some sweet
“swap my glasses for sunglasses while eating a stick of jerky while still
maintaining 16 mph avg pace” action.

The Homer is the Riv I wish I bought—don’t let its suitability for rear loads
keep you from loving it!

I would vote to go back to 700x32. Also if you are trying to maximize

already and maybe ditch the daruma style mount and use a bracket that
mounts at the brake bolt. These are all things that I have done on my AHH

[RBW] advice for attaching cork grips to chocos with bar end shifters

2018-09-10 Thread 'Clayton' via RBW Owners Bunch
If you are grooving the grips for the cable, put the glue only under the bottom
of the grip so the groove in the cork has some structural strength? (Or
hairspray.)

You could split the grips, wrap the bars with a single layer of cloth
electrical tape, then bind on the grips with twine and varnish? Zero slip.
Maximum safety.

Ergon makes a cork anatomical grip that bolts on, but would not work well with
a severely swept bar.

I wonder how varnish would work for grip glue? Alcohol would clean the bars up
well.

I used cork grips for a bit, but didn’t like the feel (too hard), durability,
and cleaning up the handlebars after removal. (I like Grab On touring grips,
cut as long as possible for lots of hand roaming room and comfort. I use them
on my flat bars, and under my handlebar tape too, due to carpal tunnel issues
and advice from my surgeon).

[RBW] FS: Dura-Ace wheels, Dirt Drop bar, Jack Brown tires

2018-09-10 Thread David Sprunger
Cross-posted to Bob and Riv lists

I’m jumping on the fall cleaning bandwagon and offering a few items that
should interest the list.

David Sprunger

Fargo, ND

Dura-Ace wheelset. These wheels are a bit out of the ordinary, being
sturdier and ready for wider tires than many other Dura-Ace wheels. 36h on
700c Dyad rims. Butted Wheelsmith spokes and Newbaum cloth tape. Although
marked 8S, I used these wheels with a 9-speed drivetrain on my Roadeo.
100/130 OLD and with original skewers. Shiny and smoth. $225 plus
shipping by Bikeflights.

Pair of Rivendell Jack Brown Green tires. This is the model without the
tread belt or beefier sidewalls. About 30 miles of wear. $40/pair includes
U.S. shipping.

Classic Rivendell/Nitto dirt drop bar. Don’t let the tape residue fool you.
These bars have seen limited use. Never wrecked. Sleeve is clean. RM013.
Heat treated. This is the wide model – 52 cm between the flared tips.
Milled for bar end shifters. $35 plus shipping.

Re: [RBW] Enlightened in New England

2018-09-10 Thread Max Faingezicht
Thanks, I’m excited to ride them more now that the fit is right.
Yes, he’s still using the laser measuring and then just patience to find the
right mix of saddle position, stem and handlebar angles.
